D.D. ‘Tommy' Thompson

RAPID CITY — Derald D. Thompson, 73, of Rapid City, died at his home Wednesday, July 3, 2002, surrounded by his family.

He was born May 8, 1929, in Brunswick, Neb., the son of John and Ruth Thompson. He was raised near Buffalo Gap and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1946. From 1946 to 1951, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1951-1953. Upon his discharge, he began working for the S.D. Dept. of Transportation and married Betty Jean Palmer in 1954. His career as a Location Engineer and Resident Engineer for the Dept. of Transportation spanned almost 20 years in the locations of Rapid City, Philip, Sioux Falls, Mobridge, Murdo, Martin and Pierre. In 1973, he entered the private sector of the construction industry when he accepted a position with Johnson Brothers Grading Contractors in Ft. Pierre. He continued his career with Harrison-Western Corp when they purchased Johnson Brothers in 1983 until 1986. From 1986 to 1990, he worked with A-G-E Corp. He officially retired in 1990, but worked part-time the last 12 years as a private consultant specializing in construction estimating, most recently for Site Works Specialists of Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Betty of Rapid City; two daughters, Deborah Klima of Rapid City and Rhonda Purkapile and her husband, Ron, of Pierre; three sons, Randall, of Wright, Wyo., Kevin and his wife, Jayne, of Rapid City, and Craig and his wife, Julie, of Marion, Iowa; one sister, Ileene Geiser and husband, Bob, of Harrison, Neb.; one brother, Donald Thompson of Hot Springs; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Sunday, July 7, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Doug Diehl officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273, will be at the Black Hills National cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society and the First Methodist Church.

He was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Richard C. Geib

RAPID CITY — Richard C. Geib, 74, Rapid City, died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen Geib, Rapid City; one son, Robert Geib, Sunnyvale, Calif.; one daughter, Carol Stork, Pierre; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Ruth H. Waldman

ABERDEEN — Ruth H. Waldman, 81, Idaho Falls, Idaho, and formerly of Aberdeen, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Life Care Center in Idaho Falls.

Survivors include two daughters, Arlyce Fuhrmann, Rapid City, and Susan Beehler, Idaho Falls; two sons, Larry Waldman, Pierre, and David Waldman, Bozeman, Mont.; two sisters, Bernice Breitkoph, Rapid City, and Elsie Craig, Calistoga, Calif.; one brother, Lester Ernst, Whitehall, Mont.; 12 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, July 8, and from 9 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 9, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary in Aberdeen. A liturgical wake service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul Rutten officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Ruth Eva Shoemaker

PHILIP — Ruth Eva McKean was born November 6, 1906, in Pierre, South Dakota, the daughter of Scott and Alice (Forsythe) McKean. She grew up on a homestead north of Midland, South Dakota. She attended school at Burnt Creek and Ottumwa, South Dakota, and graduated from Pierre High School. She attended Spearfish Normal School and received her teaching certificate, and taught for several years.

Eva married Rollie Shoemaker June 9, 1926, in Philip, South Dakota. After their marriage, they lived on a ranch near Manila, South Dakota. In 1942, they moved from the ranch to Philip. In 1951, they purchased the Cozy Hotel, where Eva lived until her health began to fail in the year 2002.

Eva's husband Rollie preceded her in death on May 10, 1967.

After Eva moved to Philip, in addition to running the Cozy Hotel, she worked as a waitress, cooked in several of Philip's restaurants, and worked for 35 years as a cook at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital before retiring at the age of 87.

Eva was instrumental in getting the Senior Citizens organized, and she served as their secretary for 25 years. Other contributions to the community by her included working for the Museum Society to get a rural school and log cabin moved into Philip.

She has held various offices in the Philip Women's Club, United Presbyterian Church, Retired Teachers, Senior Citizens, the West River Museum Society, and the Philip Chamber of Commerce.

Eva had many interests and hobbies. She liked to travel and took several trips with her good friend and traveling companion Ethel Osburn.

Eva will be remembered for her keen memory. She never forgot a birthday of her entire family right up to the time of her death. Everyone she ever met she did not forget, and could call them by their name.

Eva was one of a kind, and her children and grandchildren will miss her.

Grateful for having shared her life are two daughters, Alice Bentley of Rapid City, and Ida Mae "Patty" Patterson of Kadoka; two sons, Gordon Shoemaker and his wife, Margaret, of Belle Fourche, South Dakota and Don Shoemaker and his wife, Betty, of Evanston, Wyoming; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Audrey Watson of Tarzana, California; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Eva was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Scott E. McKean and Harold A. McKean; a sister Blanche Groshong; and a son-in-law, Dick Bentley.

Eva died Saturday morning, July 6, 2002 at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, at the age of 95.

Visitation will be held 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 8, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip and one hour preceding the services at the church on Tuesday.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the United Church in Philip, with Pastor Al Brucklacher officiating.

Interment will be at the Masonic cemetery in Philip.

A memorial is established.

Henrietta H. Heckman

RAPID CITY - Henrietta H. Heckman, 87, Rapid City, died at a local nursing home Sunday, July 7, 2002.

Henrietta and her husband, William Heckman, were well known in the Black Hills. They established the "1880 Train" in Hill City. The first trip was made in August of 1957. They sold their interest in the 1880 Train in 1990.

Survivors include a brother-in-law, Charles D. Heckman Jr., Akron, Ohio; five nieces, Bonnie Haworth Hafey, Susan Heckman Dalagrange, Roxanne Heckman Meyer, Lynn Heckman Koch and Janice Heckman Wilkinson; and a nephew, Charles Dean Haworth.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Heckman, on Nov. 28, 1996.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with Rev. Doug Diehl officiating.

Interment will be at the Pine Lawn Memorial Park cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the American Cancer Society and the Salvation Army.

Maria Marros

BUFFALO, Wyo. - Maria Marros, 94, Buffalo and formerly of Rapid City, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at her home.

Survivors include one daughter, Katherine Perry, Buffalo; three sons, John Marros, Waldorf, Md., Peter Marros, Yuba City, Calif., and Steve Marros, Berwyn, Ill.; one brother, Foti Pantazopoulos; one sister, Constantia, Greece; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Harry Marros, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, July 12, at Adams Funeral Home Chapel in Buffalo, with a 7 p.m. Trisagion service.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Buffalo, with the Rev. Gabriel and the Rev. Charles Taylor officiating.

Burial will be at Willow Grove cemetery, with graveside services to follow the funeral.

Donations in her memory may be given to the Suzie Bowling Lawrence Hospice in care of the Adams Funeral Home.

Faith Ann Dearborn Reich

ISABEL - Faith Ann Dearborn Reich, 53, Isabel, died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Avera St. Luke's Hospital in Aberdeen as a result of an automobile accident.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Reich, Isabel; three daughters, Kathy Reich, Mobridge, Melody Reich, Rapid City, and Heather Reich, Isabel; two sisters, Phyliss Miller, Isabel, and Jessie Dreis, Vale; and one brother, Clarence Dearborn, Isabel.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon and for one hour before services Thursday, July 11, at Peace Lutheran Church in Isabel.

Service of Remembrance will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. David Schilling officiating.

Burial will follow at Hillview cemetery in Isabel.

A memorial will be established by the family.

Terry Huber

RAPID CITY - Terry Huber, 52, Rapid City, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include two sisters, Luella Kleine, Belle Fourche, and Arlene Shadduck, Lakewood, Wash.; and two brothers, Leo Huber, Mobridge, and Dale Huber, Rapid City.

Arrangements are pending with Campbell, Paula & Quinn Funeral Service of Rapid City.

Abigail Yellow Boy

PINE RIDGE - Abigail Yellow Boy, 53, Pine Ridge, died Monday, July 8, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, Emery Arapahoe, Pine Ridge; four sons, Russell Running Hawk, Kyle, and Larry Running Hawk, Alex Running Hawk and Robert Running Hawk, all of Pine Ridge; four daughters, Roberta Yellow Boy, Allen, April Adams, Martin, and Rexann Holy Dance and Helen Holy Dance, both of Slim Buttes; one brother, Wilson Yellow Boy, Martin; one sister, Sophie Yellow Boy, Wolf Creek; and 11 grandchildren.

A one-night wake begins at 2 p.m. Friday, July 12, at the Wakpamni CAP building in Pine Ridge.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at the Wakpamni CAP building, with the Rev. Abraham Tobacco officiating.

Burial will be at First Body of Christ cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Christopher Lee Ball

RAPID CITY - Christopher Lee Ball, 33, of Rapid City, died Sunday, July 7, 2002, due to a motorcycle accident.

Christopher was born November 15, 1968, in Rapid City to Michael and Susan (Aughenbaugh) Ball. He was raised in Rapid City and graduated from Central High School in 1988. Christopher served in the United States Air Force from 1989-1993. He graduated from the Al Collins Graphic Design School in Phoenix, Ariz., in 1995. He married Lorelei Vifquain on July 29, 1995, in Rapid City. Christopher was working as a tattoo artist at Black Hills Tattoo and Piercing.

He is survived by his wife, Lorelei "Lolli" Ball; their children, Emily (7), Jake (5) and Grace (2), all of Rapid City; his mother, Sue Ellis and husband Don of Gillette, Wyo.; his father, Michael Ball and wife Mary of Marana, Ariz.; one brother, Richard Ball of New York; three stepbrothers, Jeremy Ellis and wife Lisa, Clayton Ellis and wife Denise and Stuart Stather; one stepsister Susan Jensen and husband Scott; and grandparents Florence Johnson of Rapid City and Hiland and Irene Aughenbaugh of Yuma, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Judson Ball, and two uncles, Ron Aughenbaugh and Jim Aughenbaugh.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m.-6 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, 2002, at Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, with a rosary service at 7 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church in Rapid City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, July 12, at the church, with Fr. Brian Christensen as celebrant. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for their children.
