Dr. William A. ‘Bill' Delaney Jr.

A private family graveside service will be held at the American Legion cemetery in Mitchell at a later date.

Military rites will be observed by the American Legion Post 29 and V.F.W. of Mitchell, SD.

Memorials can be sent in lieu of flowers to the Dakota Wesleyan University Nursing Program, at 1200 W. University Ave., Mitchell, SD 57301.

Arrangements are by Basham Funeral Service, Woonsocket, SD.

Dr. William A. Delaney Jr., a lifelong resident of Mitchell, South Dakota, died at home on July 9, 2002. The eldest of six children of Dr. William Delaney Sr. and his wife, Bessie, Dr. Bill was born on December 30, 1915. Following graduation from Mitchell's Notre Dame High School, he completed his undergraduate studies and medical school at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. There he met and married Catherine Agnes Gilmore just prior to becoming the medical officer on the USS Stephen Potter — DD 538 during World War II. His military service was entirely within the Pacific Theatre, where he earned twelve battle stars and the Navy's Commendation Medal. Though — as with many combat veterans — he seldom spoke of those years, his service fueled an unquenchable interest in military history. Over the years, he shared many warm memories with the surviving men of his destroyer's crew. His name will now be added to its honor roll of deceased crewmembers.

Following the war, Dr. Bill returned to Mitchell, where he practiced medicine as a general surgeon in the Delaney Clinic with his father and his brother, Robert. In those years he and Agnes raised seven children. The first four were boys: Bill (William A., III) Delaney of Sioux Falls, Jack (John J.) Delaney of Rapid City, Dr. Michael K. Delaney of Marion, Ill, and Dr. Thomas P. Delaney of Yankton. The last three children were girls: Nano E. Johnson of Rapid City, Mary Ann Delaney of Downey, Calif., and Maggi Morrison of Rapid City.

Professionally, Dr. Delaney was a prominent and respected member of the Mitchell and South Dakota medical communities for more than fifty years. He was recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was an adjunct professor for the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. Notwithstanding his medical reputation, he was probably better known as a physical fitness fanatic and avid hunter. He was an incomparable marksman and wingshot who spent countless hours hunting with family and friends like Judd Mabee and Cy Johnson.

Bill lost his beloved wife Agnes just days shy of their 29th anniversary. Thereafter, he (and his children) were blessed by his marriage to Marjorie Lindekugel for these last, unbelievably brief, thirty years. Marje added another daughter, Karen Lindekugel, to the blended family, and filled the maternal void in Bill's children. Inseparable, their lives were marked by a joint passion for physical fitness, dancing, hunting, fine food and the simple joy of quiet reading by the fireplace.

Remembering him still are his wife Marje, his sister Sheila, stepdaughter Karen, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, James Stewart, and her nephew, Ronald Stewart.
