Jane Gonzales

BELLE FOURCHE - Jane Gonzales, 62, Belle Fourche, died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Gonzales Sr., Belle Fourche; three sons, Oscar Gonzales, Las Vegas, Sam Gonzales, Thornton, Colo., and Leroy Gonzales, Belle Fourche; two daughters, Lynda Schmidt, Golden, Colo., and Larissa Noriega, Modesto, Calif.; and 11 grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

Ruben 'Rocky' Steinbach

SPEARFISH - Ruben "Rocky" Steinbach, 79, of Spearfish, SD, died September 24th, 2002, peacefully at home under the care of his family and hospice as a result of his battle with cancer.

Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 25th, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche.

Ruben "Rocky" was born December 12, 1922, at Artas, SD, to John and Elizabeth (Knoepfle) Steinbach. He married Gladys Evelyn Westbrook October 10, 1949, at Linton, ND. They worked on various farms around the Herried, SD, area before moving to Belle Fourche, SD, in 1952. He hired on at Bariod Bentonite plant at Colony, WY, April 13, 1953. He was a shift Foreman when he retired December 1st, 1980. Shortly after retirement they moved to Spearfish, SD.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, his wood (cedar clocks) crafts, and playing cards in his younger years. He liked spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Evelyn, Spearfish; two daughters, Cheryl Walker and husband Jerry, Newcastle, WY, Debbie Fall and husband Jerry, Belle Fourche; son Brent and wife Tracey Steinbach, Spearfish; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a sister, Alice Waege and husband Ken, Watertown, SD; a brother, Ted and his wife Judy of Herried, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother (Elizabeth), and three sisters.

Services will be held Thursday, September 26th, at 2 p.m. at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche, SD, with Rev. Bunker Hill and Chaplain Charlie Conger officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Slope cemetery.

A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers.

Florence Gladys Wood

BELLE FOURCHE - Florence Gladys Wood, 92, Belle Fourche and formerly of Newell, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Belle Fourche Long Term Care Center.

Survivors include two sons, Calvin Wood, Hartsel, Colo., and Stanley Wood, Newell; one daughter, Kathryn Kling, Nisland; five brothers, Ernest Rank, Upton, Wyo., Harold Rank, Gillette, Wyo., Mel Rank, Fort Thompson, Roy Rank, Kimball, and John Rank, Seattle; two sisters, Melvina Slemp, New Mexico, and Sylvia Huber, Emery; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Keith Wood, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and for one hour before services Saturday, Sept. 28, at First Lutheran Church in Newell.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the church, with the Rev. Deborah Geelsdottir officiating.

Burial will follow at Hope cemetery in Newell.

Donald G. Percy

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. - Mass of Christian Burial for Donald G. Percy, 74, of Apache Junction, AZ, and formerly of the Black Hills will be 10 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2002, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Lead. The Rev. William Zandri will officiate. Donald died on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at Mesa, AZ. Christian Wake and Rosary Service will be at 9 a.m. on Friday at St. Pat's. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead. Burial with military honors will be in Black Hills National cemetery.

Donald was born Jan. 27, 1928, in Haakon County, SD, to Edgar A. and Maybelle (Grau) Percy. He was raised in Haakon County west of Philip and attended school through the 8th grade. He worked in ranching and construction. They moved to Oregon from the Black Hills in 1978 and lived there until 2000, when they moved to Arizona. Donald was a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge, and the St. George Church in Apache Junction, AZ.

Survivors include his wife, Cecilia of Apache Junction, AZ; 11 children, Arlie Percy and his wife Karen of Sturgis, Kaylene Ostby and husband Kenneth of Apache Junction, AZ, David Percy and wife Patsy of Fossil, OR, Steve Percy and wife Verla of Peachtree, GA, Diane Loobey and husband Mitchell of Sturgis, Sharon Backlin and husband Rodney of Missoula, MT, Les Percy and wife Brenda of Canyon City, OR, Lauri Chapman of Stevensville, MT, Vicki Page and husband Robert of Medford, OR, Dawn Babbitt and husband Joseph of Sheperd, MT, Shelly Strong and husband Paul of Denio, NV; 29 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Donald was preceded in death by his parents and 11 brothers and sisters.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel in Lead.

Adeline Mae Hight

PIEDMONT - Adeline Mae Hight, 73, Piedmont, died Sunday, September 22, 2002, at her home in Piedmont, after a courageous five-year battle with cancer.

Adeline was born May 5, 1929, at Hamill, SD, to Joseph and Anna (Fortuna) Fott. She graduated from Winner High School in 1946.

She married Don Hight on December 11, 1949, at Winner, SD.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband, Don; one son, Dan Hight and his wife, Vanessa, and their children, Cody and Hannah, White River, SD; one daughter, Cheryl Vig and her husband, Barry, Opal, SD, and their four children, Georgia Dale and her husband, Steve, and their sons, Joe and Jeremy, Rapid City, SD, Justin Vig and his wife, Mellissa, Waterloo, IA, Marti Jo Derflinger and her husband, Bucky, and their daughter, Jami, Opal, SD, and Ryan Vig, Opal, SD; and one brother, Joe Fott and his wife, Judy, Hamill, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lawrence.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesday at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2002, at the Community Events Center in White River, with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating.

A second funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2002, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont, with Pastor Dan Freed officiating. Burial will follow at 2 p.m. at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established.

Leo C. Flynn

RAPID CITY — Leo C. Flynn, 75, Rapid City, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002 at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1927 at Sioux Falls, the son of Thomas and Clara (Urban) Flynn. He attended twelve years of school in Sioux Falls at the Cathedral schools and graduated from St. Joseph's Cathedral High School in 1945.

He served in the US Army during World War II and served in the Occupation of Germany.

In 1947 he began his employment with Metz Old Home Baking Co. in Sioux Falls. Leo married Marjorie Kolbach in Sioux Falls in May of 1953. The family moved to Rapid City in 1966 when Leo was transferred as Office Manager during Metz's acquisition of Swanders Baking Co. After 45 years of service with Metz Baking Co., Leo retired in 1992.

He was a member of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. He joined the Knights of Columbus in 1948. He had a memorable laugh as he shared his favorite stories with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Flynn, Rapid City, daughters, Patricia Emerson and Rosemary Hooten, both of Sioux Falls, and Colleen Gullickson and her husband Brad, Brandon, S. Dak.; sons, Tom Flynn and his wife Dawn, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Dan Flynn and his wife Kendrea, Rapid City, fourteen grandchildren, a sister, Florence Persing, and her husband Lawrence, Sioux Falls and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Agnes Persing and Nellie Ott.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. today at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home with a Christian Wake service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Msgr. Michael Woster as the Celebrant.

Interment with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 will be at the Black Hills National cemetery.

Alma Ellen Gutsche

STURGIS — Alma Ellen Gutsche, 88, Sturgis, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Sturgis Community Health Care Center.

Survivors include one son, Harold Gutsche, Rozet, Wyo.; two daughters, Ilene Nelson, Sturgis, and June Larkin, Brookings; one brother, John Rucastle, Spearfish; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kurt Gutsche.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis, and one hour before services at the church.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at United Methodist Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Keith Nelson officiating. Burial will be at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to Whitewood Senior Citizens Center.

Geneva K. Beller

RAPID CITY — Geneva K. Beller, 84, Rapid City, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include three nieces, Donna Fjelstad and Kathleen Currey, both of Pierre, and Janet Stam, Blaine, Minn.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City, with the Rev. Ron Hennies officiating.

Mary Ellen Groff

PIERRE — Mary Ellen Groff, 86, of Pierre, died Thursday, September 5, 2002, Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, SD.

Visitation will be Monday, September 9, 2002, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service, Feigum Funeral Home, Pierre, SD.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 10, 2002, 10 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Pierre, SD. Interment will follow at Scotty Philip cemetery, Fort Pierre, SD.

Mary Ellen Anderson was born June 5, 1916, to Alfred and Alma (Swanson) Anderson at Draper, SD. Mary Ellen was raised on her parents' ranch located south of Draper on the White River. She attended Draper High School for three years and graduated from Pukwana High School.

Mary Ellen married Arthur Groff on May 26, 1940, at Presho, SD. After their marriage they moved to North Dakota where they operated a bowling alley. They then moved to Suisun City, CA before returning to South Dakota in 1942 and acquiring their farm near Hayes.

They built a home in Pierre in 1973, after Mary Ellen moved to Pierre in 1964 to assist their youngest children with the completion of their high school. Mary Ellen worked for the South Dakota Highway Department until retiring in 1980 and lived in the family home until her death.

Mary Ellen was a member of St. Mary's Hospital Auxiliary and an active member of Faith Lutheran Church. Mary Ellen touched the lives of everyone she met. Her kind and compassionate heart served others selflessly and she established lifetime relationships with nearly all who came into contact with her. She always placed the needs of others before her own. Her passing has left a deep loss in the lives of many. She was beloved by not only her own generation, but also the younger generation that she never forgot in her cards and letters.

Mary Ellen is survived by her sister Isabel Smith of Dallas, TX; two daughters Lila Nettrour of Pittsburgh, PA, Barbara Larsen of Johnson City, TN, and her son Dennis Groff of Rapid City, SD. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Jeff Larsen, Angie Larsen, John Nettrour, Barbara Nettrour, and Tere Doppmann, as well as five great-grandchildren.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arthur, and her son James Groff.

Barbara Ann Troxell

RAPID CITY — Barbara Ann Troxell, 68, Nemo, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, Wayne Troxell, Nemo; one daughter, Roxanne Kirkeby; and two grandsons.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Frieda Frank

BURKE — Frieda Frank, 89, Burke, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at her home.

Visitation will be one hour before both services at the church. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church in Burke. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the church. Burial will be at Graceland cemetery.

Clausen Funeral Home in Burke is in charge of arrangements.

Mike M. Alexander

HILL CITY — Mike M. Alexander, 44, Hill City, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, the result of an accident in Keystone.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila Alexander, Hill City; one son, Shane Alexander, Hill City; one daughter, Kara Alexander, Hill City; his parents, Roy and Donna Alexander, Hill City; one brother, Victor Alexander, Hill City; two sisters, Deborah Carlson, Peoria, Ariz., and Joy Peterson, Hill City.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home in Rapid City.
