Harry Anthony Daniels

DEADWOOD — Mass of Christian Burial for Harry Anthony Daniels, 84, of Deadwood, will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deadwood. The Rev. Paul Dahms will officiate.

Harry died on Thursday, September 5, at the V.A. Medical Center in Sturgis.

A memorial has been established to St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Christian Wake and Rosary Service will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2002 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Visitation will be on Monday, from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at St. Ambrose.

Burial with Military Honors will be in the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Harry was born August 6, 1918 in Kleenburn, WY, the son of John and Lucia (Mancini) Daniels. He grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940. He served in the South Pacific during World War II. In July of 1947, Harry and his brother began a broadcasting career with Radio StationKDSJ in Deadwood. They expanded their operation with KRSD radio in 1953, KRSD television in 1958, and KDSJ television in 1960. In July of 1982 Harry retired and sold the business. In 1993 Harry was inducted into South Dakota Broadcaster's Hall of Fame.

Harry married Mary Hill in May of 1949 and they lived their lives together since then in Deadwood. Spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and family members was one of Harry's greatest joys.

He was a member of the St. Ambrose Catholic Church of Deadwood, a Fifty-Year Member of the Elks, a Lifetime Member of the VFW, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. Harry loved life, the beauty of nature, and time with his many friends.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Deadwood, a daughter, Susan D'Aniello of Las Vegas, NV, a son Marc Daniels of Denver, CO, one granddaughter, Toni Gerlach, one grandson, Jesse Gerlach, both of Las Vegas, NV, one niece and two nephews.

His parents, two sisters, and a brother preceded Harry in death.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Chaput Memorial Chapel.

Quince Richard White Jr.

LAKE WYLIE, S.C. — Quince Richard White Jr., 53, formerly of Box Elder, S.D., and Rapid City, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, in Missouri.

He served in the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Jampee White; one son, Tony White, Rapid City; three daughters, Sheri White and Judy White, both of the home, and Tamika Knight, Denver; one brother, George Henry White; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial services were held Sept. 7 at Cauthen Funeral Home in Rock Hill, with the Rev. John Jenkins officiating. Local services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Temple Baptist Church in Box Elder.

Burial will be at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia.

Chas H. Fender Jr.

RAPID CITY — Chas H. Fender Jr., 55, Rapid City, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy, Rapid City; one daughter, Candi Fender, Rapid City; three brothers; and four sisters.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City.

Leo Flynn

RAPID CITY — Leo Flynn, 75, Rapid City, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie, Rapid City; three daughters, Patricia Emerson and Rosemary Hooten, both of Sioux Falls, and Colleen Gullickson, Brandon; two sons, Thomas Flynn, Sandy, Utah, and Daniel Flynn, Rapid City; one sister, Florence Persing, Sioux Falls; and 14 grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Glenn Sjomeling

MOUND CITY — Glenn Sjomeling, 72, Mound City, died Friday, Sept. 6, 2002, at Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a 7 p.m. prayer service, Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Kesling Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Lutheran Church in Pollock. Burial will be at Kvernes cemetery, rural Pollock.

Ruth Boetel

MADISON — Ruth Boetel, 94, formerly of Cavour and Huron, died Thursday, Sept. 5, 2002, at Bethel Lutheran Home.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Otto Boetel.

Survivors include one son, Gary, Lake Andes; one daughter, Joan Manthey, Madison; seven grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, and before services at the church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dale Sattgast officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens cemetery.

Geneva K. Beller

RAPID CITY — Geneva K. Beller, 84, died Saturday, September 7, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include three nieces, Donna Fjelstad and Kathleen Currey, both of Pierre, and Janet Stam, Blaine, Minn.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Laura Cathrine (Burg) Jackson Lewis

HOT SPRINGS - Laura C. Lewis, 90, of Rapid City, formerly of Hot Springs, passed away at home on September 4, 2002, after a long fight with cancer. Laura was born October 21, 1912, to Jacob and Bertha (Kintoff) Burg. She was the 9th child out of thirteen. She was born at the home ranch outside of Hot Springs. She went to Hot Springs Schools, where she graduated in 1932. Then she went to Business College in Rapid City. Laura lived all her life in Hot Springs until her sickness five years ago, then came to live with her daughter in Rapid City. Laura was active in St. John's Church and the Quilt Ladies until three years ago. She made many quilts; she loved doing this and gave many to needy and hospitals on her own. Laura will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She is survived by one son: Robert (Rose) Jackson of Artesian, SD; one daughter: Elaine (Duane) Pinnt of Rapid City; five grandchildren: Alex Jackson of Artesian, Shane Jackson of Sioux Falls, Laura (Kevin) Burgess of Mt. Vernon, SD, Michele (Robert) Kuhn of Augusta, KS, Robert (Lisa) Pinnt of Coeur d'Alene, ID; she has nine great-grandchildren: Joshua and Ashley Pinnt of Coeur d'Alene, ID, Charity (Mike) Sindelar of Gillette, WY, Trista Jo (Michael) Raul of Rosehill, KS, Sarah, Jill, and Tim Kuhn of Augusta, KS, Shannora and Tylendell Jackson of Avon Park, FL; she has four great-great-grandchildren: Neomi, Zachery, Todd, and Courtney Sindelar of Gillette, WY; she has one brother, Jacob (Marianne) Burg of Pierre, SD; two special sisters-in-law, Ella Burg and Leatha Burg of Hot Springs; and many very special grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2002, at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002, at St. John's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kevin Clark officiating.

Burial will be at the Smithwick cemetery.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Hot Springs.

Eugene Sun Bear

PORCUPINE - Eugene Sun Bear, 59, Porcupine, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include one sister, Lorraine Pourier, Porcupine.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era.

One-night wake begins at 2 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wounded Knee.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the church. Michael Little Boy will officiate over traditional services.

Burial will be at Messiah Episcopal cemetery in Wounded Knee.

Charles L. Pemble

HERMOSA - Charles L. Pemble, 43, Hermosa, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, near Bismarck, N.D., as a result of an airplane accident.

Survivors include his wife, Angie Pemble, Hermosa; one daughter, Ashley Pemble, Hermosa; his parents, Charles and Marlys Marshall, Everly, Iowa; one sister, Joan Pemble, Spencer, Iowa; and two brothers, Jim Pemble, Sheridan, Wyo., and Bob Pemble, Solon, Iowa.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Bob Scheutzow

RAPID CITY - Bob Scheutzow, 61, Rapid City, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Scheutzow, Rapid City; three daughters, Karla Scheutzow, Paula Bissonette and Judy Abdo, all of Rapid City; one son, Terry Scheutzow, Rapid City; two brothers; two sisters; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Gene Honomichl

TYNDALL - Gene Honomichl, 61, Tyndall and formerly of Custer, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.

Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Hadlock and Wanda Gramkow, both of Custer.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home in Wagner.

Benjamin 'Bennie' Mohr

DEADWOOD - Benjamin "Bennie" Mohr, 85, Deadwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.

Survivors include five sons, Gerold and Curtis, both of Deadwood, Leslie, Crestwood, Ill., Darrell, Oklahoma, and Timothy, Winnemucca, Nev.; four daughters, Phylis, Norwalk, Calif., Inez, Inglewood, Colo., LeAnn, Mount Vernon, Ohio, and Cleo; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be no visitation.

Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Oakridge cemetery in Deadwood, with the Rev. Gordon Goldammer officiating.

Chaput Funeral Home of Deadwood is in charge of arrangements.

Joseph A. Baker

Lt. Col USA - Ret

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Lt. Col. Joseph A. Baker died at age 92 on September 2, 2002, at Mission Terrace Convalescent Hospital, Santa Barbara. Born in Sturgis, South Dakota, on August 27, 1910, he graduated from South Dakota State University in 1934. Mr. Baker worked for the Homestake Mining Company in Lead, South Dakota, until called to active duty in the U.S Army Corps of Engineers in 1940. He remained in the service as a career officer until retirement in 1961. He participated in combat operations in WWII and in Korea. Subsequent to retirement from the military he continued in the service of the Corps of Engineers as a civilian on special assignment at the U.S. Army Headquarters in Europe, located in Heidelberg, Germany. In this capacity he was a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representative to the NATO International Staff on matters pertaining to construction relative to the air defense of the NATO nations.

Subsequent to final U.S. Government Service he moved to Santa Barbara with his family, and worked for the City of Santa Barbara in the field of Civil Defense and Emergency Services from 1964 to 1977. He then served as Disaster Chairman for the Santa Barbara Chapter of the American Red Cross from 1977 to 1981. He received a Congressional Commendation in 1978 for "long and distinguished service to his country and the well being of his fellow man."

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, the National Board of Sojourners, Santa Barbara Lodge No. 613 of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, St. Marks Methodist Church, U.S. Civil Defense Council, a member of the Board of Directors of the National Radiological Defense Officers Association, and Charter President of the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Retired Officers Association, and California Emergency Service Association.

He is survived by his wife Edna, daughter Bonnie Jo McKay (James), step-children Juanita Hughes (John), Wesley Warvi (Starr), James Simmons (Denise), and Gerald Simmons. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Harriet and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at St. Marks Methodist Church at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 7, 2002. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Bruce B. Brown

BELLE FOURCHE - Bruce B. Brown, 64, Belle Fourche, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his father, Victor Brown, Chelsea, Mich.; one brother, Kent Brown, Chelsea; one sister, Vicky Webster, Lavonia, Mich.; two sons, Matthew Brown and Jeremy Kister, both of Minneapolis; one daughter, Barbara; and his life companion, Wes Hastings, Belle Fourche.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard.

Cremation has taken place, and memorial services will be held this fall.

Inurnment will be at Grey City cemetery in Grey, N.D.

Kline-Frost Funeral Home of Belle Fourche is in charge of arrangements.
