Richard Dean Meyers

BELLE FOURCHE — Richard Dean Meyers, 53, Belle Fourche, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, at David M. Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish.

Survivors include his mother, Ruth Meyers, Belle Fourche, and three brothers, William Meyers, Rapid City, and James Meyers and Calvin Meyers, both of Belle Fourche.

Arrangements are pending with Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche.

James W. ‘Jimmie' Uresk

RAPID CITY — James W. "Jimmie" Uresk, 22, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his parents, Dan and Virginia Uresk, Rapid City, and one brother, Danny Uresk, Arcata, Calif.

Arrangements are pending with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Doreen Wampler

RAPID CITY — Doreen Wampler, 70, Rapid City, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 2002, at Meadowbrook Manor in Rapid City.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Wampler, Carbondale, Colo., and Darrell Wampler, Brandon; five grandchildren; and one brother, Vincent Henderson, Rapid City.

Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12, at Rush Funeral Home in Philip, and for one hour before services Tuesday, Aug. 13, at First Lutheran Church in Philip.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Paul Bly officiating.

Burial will be at Masonic cemetery in Philip.

Leolla Hall

GETTYSBURG — Leolla Hall, 81, Gettysburg, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at Oahe Manor in Gettysburg.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Hall, Gettysburg, and Jim Hall, Piedmont; one daughter, Carmen Thomas, Gettysburg; two brothers, Donald, Lebanon, and Delbert, Gettysburg; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Her husband, George Hall, preceded her in death.

Services were held Saturday, Aug. 10, at United Methodist Church in Gettysburg.

Burial was at Gettysburg cemetery.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Theresa ‘Mae' Melvin

RAPID CITY — Mary Theresa (Mae) Melvin died Sunday, August 4, 2002, at Fairmont Grand Manor.

Mae was born in Rapid City to Orlin and Mary (Way) Lampert on August 31, 1908. She attended schools in Rapid City and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1926. She was married to L. William (Bill) Melvin on June 10, 1931, in Rapid City, and they spent their entire lives in Rapid City.

She was a life-long member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and served as Treasurer for several years. She was a volunteer in the Girl Scouts and spent many hours as a volunteer with the Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary and Hospice. She was a member of the Eastern Star for over 50 years.

She is survived by two daughters, Gail Gelino and husband, Charles, Miltona, MN, and Joyce Bjork and husband, Philip of Rapid City; five granddaughters, Kathy Gelino, Beth Gelino, Susan Lebakken, Tanja Bjork and Lara Bjork; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace Shelton, Tucson, AZ; one sister-in-law, Helen Melvin, Rapid City; and one brother-in-law, Raymond Versaw, Grand Junction, CO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, one brother and three sisters.

At her request, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, with Father David Cameron officiating. Private inurnment will be at Mountain View cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to Hospice of the Hills.

Behrens Mortuary is in care of arrangements.

Zane Christian Phares

RAPID CITY — Zane Christian Phares was stillborn Friday, August 2, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital to Scott and Tari (Nelson) Phares.

He is survived by his parents of Rapid City; his sister, Kiley Ann Phares of Rapid City; his brother, Payton Scott Phares of Rapid City; his grandparents, Terrance and Nancy Phares, and David and Barb Nelson, all of Rapid City; his uncle, Scott Nelson of Rapid City; and his two cousins, Drew and Sam Nelson, both of Rapid City.

Graveside services were held Monday, August 5, 2002, in the infant section of Mountain View cemetery in Rapid City, with the Rev. Layne Nelson officiating.

Kirk Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Eugene ‘Gene' Williamson

INDEPENDENCE, Kan. — Eugene "Gene" Williamson, 39, Independence and formerly of Belle Fourche, S.D., died Friday, Aug. 2, 2002.

Survivors include his mother, Anita Williamson, Spearfish; his father, Mike Slaska, Coffeeville, Kan.; six brothers, Randy Williamson, Lanny Williamson, Kenny Williamson and David Williamson, all of Belle Fourche, Michael John Slaska, Coos Bay, Ore., and Frank Slaska, Coffeeville; and one sister, Juli Slaska, Coffeeville.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services Thursday, Aug. 8, at Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Christian Life Center, with the Rev. Paul Howard officiating.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Onge cemetery in St. Onge, S.D.

Toby Ray Eagle Bull

PINE RIDGE — Toby Ray Eagle Bull, 20, Pine Ridge, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Whiteclay, Neb.

Survivors include his parents, Lawrence Eagle Bull and Lynelle Tyon-Eagle Bull, Pine Ridge; two brothers, Larry Eagle Bull and Josie Eagle Bull, both of Pine Ridge; and two sisters, Autumn Eagle Bull, Pine Ridge, and Jeanne Oxendine, St. Mawgen, England.

One-night wake begins at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, in Pine Ridge High School gym.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, in the school gym, with the Rev. Ben Tyon, the Rev. Agnes Tyon and the Rev. Larry Peterson officiating.

Burial will be at Holy Cross Episcopal cemetery in Pine Ridge.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah Rose Boltz

WOUNDED KNEE — Sarah Rose Boltz, 15, Wounded Knee, died Sunday, Aug. 4, 2002, in Whiteclay, Neb.

Survivors include her parents, Cynthia Little Moon and Marvin Boltz, both of Wounded Knee; one brother, Craig Boltz, Wounded Knee; and five sisters, Tara Boltz, Charlotte Boltz, Christy Boltz, Marcie Boltz and Leslie Little Moon, all of Wounded Knee.

One-night wake begins at 1 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wounded Knee.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Jim Ryan officiating.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery in Wounded Knee.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Martin Garza

BELLE FOURCHE — Martin Garza, 36, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include three daughters, Melissa Garza and Marisha Garza, both of Texas, and Jessica Garza, Arlington, Minn.; one son, Zach Garza, Arlington; his mother, Natalia Garza-Mitchell; two brothers, Lupe Garza, Glenco, Minn., and Joe Garza, Belle Fourche; and one sister, Juanita Miller, Buffalo.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9, at Funeral Home of the Northern Hills in Belle Fourche. A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the church, with the Rev. Matt Fallgren officiating.

Burial will be at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.

A memorial has been established.

Viola ‘Cheyenne' Nichols

RAPID CITY — Viola "Cheyenne" Nichols, 67, Rapid City, died Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Nichols Sr., Rapid City; two sons, Lyle Nichols and Robert Nichols, both of Rapid City; three daughters, Bernie Lafferty, Shakopee, Minn., Darlene Nichols, Santa Fe, N.M., and Temple Flanigan, Rapid City; four sisters, Nada Eagle Bull, Pine Ridge, Rose Peoples and Marvena Lamont, both of Rapid City, and Darlene Rogers, Shawnee, Okla.; 19 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Rapid City, with the Rev. Pat McCorkell officiating.

Burial will follow at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City.

Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys L. Fraley

RAPID CITY — Gladys L. Fraley, 96, Rapid City, died Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include two daughters, Carol Fullmer, Longmont, Colo., and Mary Clark, Spearfish; one son, Ray Fraley, Tacoma, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are pending with Kirk Funeral Home of Rapid City.

Richard August Reiter

RAPID CITY — Retired Army Colonel Richard August Reiter, age 81, passed away on August 4, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, Rapid City, South Dakota, following a long illness.

Born on February 14, 1921, in Wilmington, Delaware, to August Reiter, Sr. and Madeline (Piellisch) Reiter, Richard received his education at Wilmington public schools and later attended Temple University to study electronics.

Richard began his distinguished military career on September 3, 1940, enlisting with the Delaware Army National Guard's Coast Artillery Regiment. He entered Active Duty on September 16, 1940, and served in foreign service in the South Pacific during World War II. He reentered the Delaware Army National Guard in January 1947 and served in many positions, including Chief of Military Support, Battalion Commander, and State Inspector General. He received the Second Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for his exemplary dedication and performance of duty throughout his career.

Colonel Reiter met Martha H. Sasse in Washington, D.C., where she worked as a secretary in the Department of the Navy. They were married on April 21, 1946, in Wilmington, Delaware, and raised four children: Rick, Karen, Greg, and Joanne. Following 36 years of service in the Army, Colonel Reiter retired and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General for the Delaware National Guard. The couple relocated to Custer, South Dakota, and built a home near Pleasant Valley.

Colonel Reiter was Veterans Service Officer for Custer County, served on local hospital, airport, and various planning boards, and was a member of the Optimist International organization, Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Colonel Reiter was a devoted husband to Martha for 56 years and a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed camping, traveling, and nature, and serving his community and neighbors.

He is preceded in death by his wife Martha and brother William. Survivors include son, Rick and wife Cheryl and grandsons John and David of Evansville, Indiana; son, Greg and wife Donna and grandsons Kyle and Jason of Newark, Delaware; daughter Karen and husband Frank of Virginia Beach, Virginia; daughter Joanne Bornong and husband Bernie and grandsons Bernie and Brian of Sheridan, Wyoming; and sister Caroline Finochl of Wilmington, Delaware.

Visitation will be at McColley's Chapels of the Hills in Custer on Thursday, August 8, 2002, at 6 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 9, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Custer Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Dan Benedict officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Black Hills National cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the Custer chapter of the VFW.

McColley's Chapels of the Hills is in charge of arrangements.
