Thomas E. Denind

RAPID CITY - Thomas E. Denind, 61, Rapid City, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, at the Veterans Adm. Medical Center, Fort Meade, S.D.

Tom was born on February 8, 1941, in Noble, Ill., to Walter E. and Audrey Denind.

He entered the Air Force in 1960 and served for 22-1/2 years.

Upon retirement he worked at Newkirks Ace Hardware for 13 years; he spent the last seven years at the Army National Guard Camp as the postman.

Tom enjoyed telling jokes, flying his Flight Simulator, serving dinner at the Mission, spending time with his grandchildren and just enjoying life.

Survivors include his wife Jo Denind, Rapid City; son Robert Denind, Cheyenne, Wyo.; daughter Jill Bunderson and her husband Troy, and two grandchildren, Michael and Samantha Bunderson, all of Rapid City; sisters, Jeri Denind, LaPeer, Mich., Patty Tennison, Benton, Ill., and Barbara Shephard, Brea, Calif.; and brothers, Kenneth Denind, Momence, Ill., Walter Denind Jr., Bridgeport, Ill., and Donald Denind, Los Angeles, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Audrey Denind, and sisters Marie Krawczak and Betty Winn.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 9, 2002, at the Church of St. Therese the Little Flower, with Rev. Bryan Sorensen as the celebrant. Interment, with full military honors, will be at the Black Hills National cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

He will be missed very much and will always be in our hearts, minds and thoughts.

Vernon Lyle Schuetzle

FORT PIERRE - Vern Schuetzle, 61, of Ft. Pierre, S.D., died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lutheran Memorial Church Tuesday May 7, 2002.

A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lutheran Memorial Church.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at Lutheran Memorial Church in Pierre.

Burial will be at Riverside cemetery.

Vernon Lyle Schuetzle was born in Plevna, Mont., on May 25, 1940, to John and Pauline (Christman) Schuetzle.

His family moved to Hitchcock, S.D., in September 1945, where Vern attended school and graduated from Hitchcock High School.

In Hitchcock, Vern met Deanna Gordon, and the two were married on June 13, 1958.

The couple moved to Pierre in 1960 and had four children, Scott, Todd, June and Missy, all of Pierre.

His wife, Deanna, passed away from cancer in 1985 and Vern married Lyla Tordsen on July 31, 1999.

Vern was a prominent businessman in Pierre and worked at Fischer, Rounds and Associates at the time of his death.

He was very active in many community organizations, including 13 years on St. Mary's Hospital Board, where he currently served as Chairman of the Board.

He also served as President or Board Member of PEDCO, the Jaycees, YMCA, Pierre Chamber of Commerce, Red Cross, and Missouri Shores Domestic Violence Center.

Vern was a retired Pierre Fire Fighter, and a member of the Masonic Order, and Elks.

His many accomplishments include leadership roles in various community projects and organizations.

Vern's kind-heartedness and generosity were felt by everyone.

Vern is survived by his wife, Lyla Schuetzle, of Fort Pierre; two sons, Scott Schuetzle and wife Gina and Todd Schuetzle and wife Leesa, and two daughters, June Larson and husband Scott and Missy Schuetzle, all of Pierre; three stepsons, Troy Tordsen and wife Tamara of Rapid City, S.D., Jared Tordsen and wife Tonya of Springfield, Mo., and Brian Tordsen and wife Angel of Sioux Falls; along with 18 grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence Schuetzle and wife Mildred of Pulaski, Miss., and Donald Schuetzle and wife Linda of Whittmann Ariz.; two sisters, Ruth Patrick and husband Carl of Bodfish, Calif., and Thelma Goodall and husband Lloyd of Huron, S.D.; and one sister-in-law, Faye Schuetzle of New Ulm, Minn.

He was preceded in death by Deanna; his parents, John and Pauline; and two brothers, Herbert and Wilbur.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Isburg-Hofmeister Funeral Chapel of Pierre.

Gerri Rae Philipsen

VALE - Gerri Rae Philipsen, 27, Vale, died Sunday, May 5, 2002, as the result of a traffic accident near Bear Butte.

Survivors include her parents, Gary and Marilyn Philipsen, Vale; three sisters, Karen Baker, Newell, Kathryn Opstedahl, Piedmont, and Melissa Philipsen, Vale; and one brother, Michael Philipsen, Nisland.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating.

Burial will follow at Vale cemetery.

Freda Chan-Burkett

LEAD - Freda Chan-Burkett, 58, Lead, died at her home.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathryn Edgar, Jacksonville, Fla., Colette Oliver, Glendale, Ariz., and Laurie McKee, Sturgis; two sons, Brett Snyder, St. Joseph, Mo., and Sam Snyder, Inwood, Iowa; many grandchildren; three sisters, Kristine Reid, Custer, Ryett Harty, Lead, and Jean Lappe, Gillette, Wyo.; and one brother, Jerald Kayras, Hot Springs.

Private services will be held in Sturgis.

Memorials may be made to the local Humane Society.

George T. 'Ted' Martin

RAPID CITY - George T. "Ted" Martin died at Beverly Health Care Nursing Home Friday, April 26, 2002.

He was born in Dempster, S.D., grew up in Watertown; attended SDSU, Brookings, served in Army Reserve Signal Corps, attended S.D. School of Mines and was a Civil Engineer.

He is survived by his wife, Toni; two daughters, Patricia and Kay; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and an older sister, Mae Griffin in California.

Private interment at Black Hills National cemetery will be at a later date.

Buck Carl Jones Sr.

RAPID CITY - Buck Carl Jones Sr., 48, Rapid City, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Black Hills Retirement Center.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Jones, Box Elder; six sons, Buck Jones and Wesley Jones, both of Chico, Texas, Adam Jones, North Carolina, Raymond Jones and Patrick Jones, both of Texas, and Christopher Jones, Box Elder; one brother, Lynn Jones, Idaho; two sisters, Barbara Rogers and Winena Jones, both of Texas; and five grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. today at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis.

Behrens Mortuary of Rapid City is in charge of arrangements.

Keith Loyal Lamb

SUNDANCE, Wyo. - Keith Loyal Lamb, 69, Sundance, died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Lamb, Sundance; three daughters, Debby Hursh, Dillon, Mont., Shelly Evans, Upton, Wyo., and Kerry Lamb, Sundance; two sons, Jim Lamb, Bonnie Lake, Wash., and Reese Lamb, Wasilla, Alaska; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Heppner, Hot Springs, S.D., Charlotte Engstrom, Gillette, and Lyla Dudrey, Sundance; and one brother, Duane Lamb, Rapid City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at Fidler-Roberts Funeral Chapel in Sundance, with the Rev. T. Wayne Phillips officiating.

Burial will follow at Green Mountain cemetery in Sundance.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Crook County Hospice.

Frederick 'Fred' Mesteth Jr.

PINE RIDGE - Frederick "Fred" Mesteth Jr., 64, Pine Ridge, died Friday, May 3, 2002, in Rapid City.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Mesteth, Pine Ridge; four daughters, Jennifer Mesteth-Two Two, Jill Mesteth and Mary Mousseau, all of Pine Ridge, and Julie Marshall, Seattle; five sons, Jim Mesteth, Pine Ridge, Joe Mesteth, Slim Buttes, Andy Running Hawk, Gordon, Neb., and Don Twiss and James Twiss, both of Porcupine; three sisters, Martha Chino, Albuquerque, N.M., Sophie Killeaney, Pierre, and Patty Fager, Pine Ridge; and 16 grandchildren.

A two-night wake will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, in the Pine Ridge High School gym.

The second night will begin at noon Thursday, May 9, at Crazy Horse School in Wanblee.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 10, at Crazy Horse School, with the Rev. Creighton Robinson and all area Episcopal ministers officiating.

Burial will be at Gethsemane Episcopal cemetery in Wanblee.

Sioux Funeral Home of Pine Ridge is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Boydston

NEW UNDERWOOD - Alice Boydston, 82, New Underwood, S.D., formerly of Boneita Springs, S.D., died Saturday, May 4, 2002, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

She was born November 21, 1919, to Earl and Kate (Nauchtigall) Stover in Rapid City, S.D.

She lived in the area her entire life. She grew up in Owanka, S.D.; attended a rural school through the 8th grade.

She married Cecil Boydston on January 6, 1946, in New Underwood, S.D.; after marriage, she lived on a ranch in New Underwood and moved to Boneita Springs, S.D., in 1947, and lived there until 1992; then retired to New Underwood, S.D.

She belonged to the ABC Extension Club and Farmer's Union.

She attended the UCC Church in New Underwood.

She loved flowers, cooking, spending time with family, especially get-togethers, crocheting, and embroidery, reading and decorating cakes.

She is survived by three sons, Dean and his wife Mary Boydston of Enning, S.D., Lynn and his wife Lila Boydston of Lisco, Neb., and Ross and his wife Melody Boydston of Cody, Neb.; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil, on May 25, 1997; parents; one son, Carrol Boydston; two brothers, Edgar and Kenneth Stover; and one sister, Gertrude Fernau.

Visitation will be Tuesday, May 7, 2002, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Behrens Mortuary.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 8, 2002, at 10 a.m. at the New Underwood Gymnasium, with Pastor Ed Wyatt officiating.

Burial will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Elm Springs cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Behrens Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
