Marty Leonard Eitreim
(July 18, 1919 - September 26, 2011)

Marty L. Eitreim, age 92, of Garretson, died on Monday, September 26, 2011, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 30, 2011, at the Zion Lutheran Church, Garretson. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-8:00 P.M. Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Garretson Dollars for Scholars.
Martin Leonard Eitreim was born on July 18, 1919, at Garretson, South Dakota to Iver D. and Jorgena (Buer) Eitreim. He attended school in Garretson and graduated from Garretson High School in 1938. On February 1, 1941, he married Elaine Nelson in Hills, Minnesota. Marty served in the United States Navy during World War II. Following his service he was employed as a fireman at the Sioux Falls Army Air Base and at Brown Drug Wholesale Company.
Marty attended the Sioux City Barber College in 1949 and operated a barbershop in Garretson for 30 years. In 1978, he sold the business and became employed with the Southeast Livestock Coop in Sioux Falls until his retirement in 1982. Marty and Elaine then moved to Ottertail, Minnesota. Following Elaine’s death in 1993, Marty moved back to Garretson.
Marty was a charter member of the Garretson Community Swimming Pool and a 67 year member of the American Legion. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church, 40 & 8, Garretson Commercial Club, Garretson Volunteer Fire Department, and the Palisade Masonic Lodge. He also served as a director of the Split Rock Telephone Corporation and the Ottertail Lake Properties Association. Marty was a dedicated fan of the Garretson Blue Dragons and could always be seen at athletic competitions in Garretson. He was also extremely proud of his 13 years of sobriety.
Survivors include his children: Dianne (Jim) Burma of Sioux Falls, Pamela (Bill) Liester of Battle Lake, MN, David (Nelda) of Garretson and Keith (Susan) of Jasper, MN; 10 grandchildren: Jim Burma Jr., Amy Ries, Susan Kubat, Stephanie Liester, Tom Liester, Valerie Soules, Krissy Stadther, Jennifer Vollmuth, Andrew Eitreim and Marci Eitreim; 10 great-grandchildren: Crosby Ries, Sophia Ries, Eliza Ries, Lauren Kubat, Kyle Kubat, Jim Burma III, Madeline Burma, Owen Liester, Max Liester and William Noah Liester Jackson. He was preceded in death by his wife, three infant children, parents, five siblings and eleven half-siblings.

Eveyln McShannon

Evelyn McShannon, of Crofton, Nebraska, passed away from cancer on Friday, October 17, 2008 at her daughter Sharon's residence in Omaha, NE.
Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crofton with Rev. Bob Bryan officiating. Burial will be in the Bloomfield cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton and one hour prior to services on Tuesday at the Church.
Pallbearers are Craig McShannon, Justus McShannon, Lathan Boysen, Shawn Langemeier, Christopher Haas, and Joshua Haas.
Evelyn was born on March 20, 1922 west of Crofton to Justus and Sophia (Mesenbrink) Hennings. She attended New Home School until graduating from the 8th grade. She married Gerald McShannon on November 1, 1943 at Crofton. To this union 5 children were born: Sharon, Gary, Jeanie, Lorraine, and Archie. They farmed the family farm southwest of Crofton until Gerald's death on July 8, 1988 at the age of 65. Evelyn then moved into Crofton. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Crofton, and was a former member of the Yankton VFW Auxiliary, Crofton Senior Citizens Center, Town and Country Square Dance Club, Single Wheelers Club, and the Laurel Twirlers. She enjoyed all forms of dancing, bingo, and visiting with friends and family.
Survivors include her 5 children; Sharon McShannon and special friend Wally Cummings of Omaha, Gary and Anna McShannon of Crofton, Jeanie Langemeier of Crofton, Lorraine and Vern Haas of Rapid City, SD, Archie and Karri McShannon of Volin, SD, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, a sister in law, Blossom Mayer of Yankton, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Gerald, a son in law, Roger Langemeier, 5 brothers; Harvey, Elmer, Ralph, Hugo, and Melvin Hennings, 2 sisters; Hulda Hennings, and Bernice Stratman.

Doris Blume

Services for Doris Blume, 89, Redfield, were held Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Redfield, with the Rev. Tim Fugman officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, Redfield. The Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Blume died Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at the Eastern Star Home, Redfield.
She was born Aug. 8, 1915, in Ardmore to Edward and Mary (Heiser) Mommer.
She married Kenneth Blume July 4, 1932, in Redfield, and they farmed near Redfield for a few years before moving into Redfield. She managed the kitchen at the sales barn and was well known for her homemade pies and doughnuts. She later ran Blume Rest Home approximately 20 years.
She belonged to Eastern Star Chapter No. 19 and First Congregational United Church of Christ.
She “enjoyed playing bingo, playing cards and reading.”
Survivors include one son: Douglas (VaLynn) Blume, Salt Lake City, Utah; one daughter: Donna Erickson, Aberdeen; seven grandchildren: Mrs. Al (Sharol) Erdmann, Mrs. Blaine (Faye) Steinhouse, Todd (Vikki) Drobny, Troy (Natasha) Blume, Mrs. Damon (Angel) Harrell, Mrs. Roger (Amber) Birregah and Mrs. Michael (Tiffany) Gollinghorst; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Kenneth (1993), one son-in-law: John Erickson, one sister, four brothers and one grandchild.

Harold "Howie" Siemonsma
(Died December 27, 2012)

Harold “Howie” Siemonsma, age 88, of Chester, died on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 A.M. Monday, December 31, 2012, at Huntimer St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church, rural Colton, South Dakota. Visitation will be from 2-4:00 P.M. Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton, and will resume at the church with the family present at 5:30 P.M., with a Rosary at 6:30 P.M., and a Wake Service at 7:00 P.M.
Howie was born on December 2, 1924, at Rock Valley, Iowa, to Barney and Dora (Van Whye) Siemonsma. He grew up in the Rock Valley area until moving with his family to Colton during high school. He graduated from Colton High School in 1942. After high school, he worked at John Morrell and as a farm hand around Colton. On October 24, 1945, Howie married Magdalen “Matt” Gaspar at St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church. In 1948, the couple moved to a farm near Colton where they would farm all their lives. In 1973, Howie and Matt moved to Chester, but Howie continued to help on the farm until just last year.
Howie was a dedicated member of St. Joseph the Workman Catholic Church at Huntimer. He served on the church council, sang in the choir, and assisted during the construction of the new church. He always enjoyed helping other people.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Magdalen “Matt”, Chester; children: Daniel (Sharon) Siemonsma, Chester, Dorothy (Loren) Hass, Chester, Diane (Hod) Braskamp, Wentworth, Michael (Emily) Siemonsma, Colton, and Mark (Judy) Siemonsma, Candia, New Hampshire; 12 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and siblings: James (Mary Jo) Siemonsma, Lake Madison, and Bernieth Baumberger, Round Top, New York.
Howie was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Mary Alice Eichler, and Robert “Bob” Siemonsma; and a special nephew, Michael John.

S. Bernice Thomas OSB

S. Bernice Thomas OSB, age 93, died Monday, February 9, 2009 in the Monastery Care Center in Yankton, South Dakota.
The wake will be held on Wednesday, February 11, at 7:30 p.m. and the Funeral Mass celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 12 in Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the monastery cemetery. Wintz & Ray Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mary Bernadine Thomas was born April 29, 1915 to Adam and Mary Ann (Weisbeck) Thomas near Bowdle, SD. She was second oldest in a family of nine children. She went to a country school through the 8th grade. Hard times prevented her attending high school even though she had a strong desire to do so. At age fifteen she felt called to religious life but was advised by family members that she was too young and should wait a few years. At the age of eighteen in 1933 she again felt drawn to religious life and sent a letter of request to Sacred Heart Monastery. She entered the community on August 28, 1933. She became a novice in 1935 receiving the name, Bernice. She made her first profession the following year and her final profession in 1940.
During the novitiate she was asked what she would like to do for a ministry and "with all the fervor of my heart, I replied, anything obedience would ask. Yes, I knew it may be cooking. To the depths of my heart I always liked it." Her many years in active ministry were in food service at schools in Fort Yates, ND, Chamberlain, Epiphany and Polo, SD, and at hospitals and nursing homes in Pierre, Yankton, Tyndall and Parkston, SD, as well as the monastery bakery.
S. Bernice had an outgoing personality and was known for her many unique descriptive words and phrases. She loved to read, tend plants, crochet, cook and spend time with her friends.
She is survived by her Benedictine community; three brothers: Matt, John and August; and two sisters: Catherine Fischer and Lucille Hoden. Her parents, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.

Dr. Frederic J. Petersen

Dr. Frederic J. Petersen, 80, Lin-coln, NE, died Wed-nesday, April 30, 2008. He was born in Julesburg, CO, Sept. 18, 1927, to Alfred Iver and Alta (Thietje) Petersen. He married Mildred Athey on Aug. 1, 1953, in Lincoln.
After serving in the U. S. Army in Korea, Dr. Petersen earned his bachelors, masters and Doctor of Education degrees at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He became a member of The University of South Dakota faculty in 1954, where he was a professor, department chair and associate dean of the School of Education. He was an expert in school accreditation and served for a number of years as a consultant for the Air Force Dependents' schools in western Europe, the Caribbean, Iceland and other locations. Dr. Petersen served as State Chairman of the South Dakota North Central Asso-ciation of Colleges and Schools for ten years and as national president in 1984-1985. Upon retiring from The University of South Dakota in 1992, he and Mrs. Petersen moved to Lincoln.
Dr. Petersen's professional memberships included Phi Delta Kappa, South Dakota State Education Association, National Education Associ-tion and the Beadle Club. He was also a member of Lib-erty Lodge 300, A.F. & A.M., Lincoln, Royal Arch Masons, Scottish Rite Masons, El Riad Shrine Temple, Order of Eastern Star, VFW Clay Post 301 in South Dakota, IOOF Nebraska, Life member UNL Alumni Association and South Gate United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Norman Jones, Wilmette, IL; daughter, Kristine, Smyrna, GA; grandson, Graham Jones, Wilmette, IL, and many other loving family members.
A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. May 5 at South Gate United Meth-odist Church, 3500 Pioneers Blvd. with Rev. Steve Flader officiating. There was a prior private interment. Memor-ials in lieu of flowers, may be sent to the Frederic Petersen Scholarship Endowment, University of South Dakota Foundation, 414 E. Clark, Vermillion, SD 57069 or to Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital, c/o El Riad Temple, P.O. Box 1203, Sioux Falls, SD 57101.
There was no visitation.

Charles "Bud" Murphy

Charles "Bud" Murphy passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5, 2008 at the Sanford Vermillion Hospital. He was a magnificent 90 years old.
Charles Joseph Murphy was born Sept. 12, 1917 in Sioux City, IA to Marie (Wilkins) and Charles J. Murphy, Sr. He grew up in a very caring community of South Sioux City, NE, where his mother was the city librarian. His two older sisters, Martha and Marian, along with extended family and many friends took special care of their little "Buddy."
Bud attended South Sioux City High School, graduating in 1935. He was a very good student and participated in many vocal music activities. Music was always a very important part of Bud's life. At the age of 5, his Grandmother Murphy gave him piano lessons and discovered his early talent for playing by ear. This talent led to a lifetime of enjoying to play the piano and the organ.
Bud attended the University of Nebraska, after which he worked as an orderly at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City and special assistant to Dr. Hicks.
Bud married his high school sweetheart, Dorothy Lucken, on Sept. 19, 1942. Bud entered the Army and was a drill sergeant stationed at Camp Polk, LA. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he worked for the Albertson Tool Company in Sioux City.
In 1948, Bud and Dorothy became the owners and resident proprietors of Greenfield Store, 12 miles north of Vermillion. This was a wonderful place to raise their family. Not only serving his customers with great care, but also his community, Bud was active in the St. Paul (Rockfield) Lutheran Church, the Alsen Telephone Board, Greenfield School Board and the Civil Air Patrol, receiving his pilot's license in 1958. Bud and two friends shared the ownership of a small airplane and the end of a cornfield as a runway. This worked fine unless the cows got out.
Greenfield Store closed in 1964, but the family continued to reside in the remodeled home until 1969 when they moved to Vermillion. Bud established the laundromat business in Beresford and Canton and was active in the Chamber of Commerce in Beresford. He was also a car dealer for Vermillion Ford and Dayhuff Chevrolet until his retirement and the pursuit of full-time fishing and wood working.
Bud enjoyed a great game of Scrabble and delighted in the competition of the games held at the library. Bud also had the best cared for birds and squirrels in town.
Bud's quick wit, fun detailed stories, and his never ending patience and kindness will be cherished and missed by his family. Sons: Jan Scott, Ft. Collins, CO, Jeffrey Charles, (Jan) San Clemente, CA, and daughter, Jean Ann (Paul) Colon, Sioux Falls. His grandchildren: Megan Colon, Washington, DC, Adam Colon, Sioux Falls, Maren Colon, Sioux Falls, and Samantha Murphy, San Clemente, CA; a sister-in-law, Merle (Ernest) Lucken, Akron, IA and many loving nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, 12 brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law, and his dear Dorothy in December 2004.
Funeral services are 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion. Visitation is 6 to 7 p.m. Friday with Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home.

Vernie M. Ford

Vernie M. Ford, age 95, of Yankton, South Dakota, died of congestive heart failure on Monday, February 16, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Monday, February 23, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Reverend Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery. Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Yankton.
Verna May "Vernie" Ford was born October 5, 1913 in Aurora County, South Dakota to Harry Everett and Jennie Almira (Padget) Monteith and was raised in Jerauld County, South Dakota. After high school, she attended teacher's training in Wessington Springs, South Dakota and taught until she was married . On September 21, 1939, she married Harvey Joseph Ford in Mitchell, South Dakota. They lived in Woonsocket, Chamberlain and Phillip, until moving to Yankton in 1956. Vernie was a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was involved in PTA and was a Sunday school teacher and secretary. She was also active in United Methodist Women and a member of First United Methodist Church of Yankton. Vernie loved to sew, crochet and knit, but her special love were her violets, other indoor plants and her garden. She was the quintessential letter writer.
She is survived by a daughter, Carol (Dennis) Preslicka of Iowa City, Iowa; a son, James (Donna) Ford of San Dimas, California; a daughter-in-law, Gretchen Ford of Custer, South Dakota; six grandchildren: James (Amy) Preslicka of Iowa City, Iowa, Bradley (Christine) Ford of Maplewood, Missouri, Hannah Ford (Kaleb Asplund) of Austin, Texas, Ryan Ford of Valencia, California, Joseph Ford of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Andrew Ford of Custer, South Dakota. She is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren: Michael, Donna and Andrew Preslicka and Sylvan Asplund; a sister, Floy Hull of East Moline, Illinois; and nieces and nephews.
Vernie was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Ford; son, Melvin Ford; daughter, Karen Ford at birth; her parents; and two sisters, Reva Monteith Greeno and Viola Montieth at birth.
Memorial may be made to First United Methodist Church in Yankton.

Jeffery Hal. Jimison

Jeffery Hal Jimison, associate professor of music at Mount Marty College, 54, Yankton, died Tuesday (Nov. 15, 2005) at his residence.

Eva Marie Shea
(November 22, 1923 - October 10, 2012)

Eva Marie Shea, 88, of Sioux Falls died October 10, 2012 at Southridge Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls.
Graveside services will be held next spring at the Rosehill cemetery, Parker, South Dakota.
Eva was born November 22, 1923 in Hartford Township, Minnehaha County, South Dakota to parents Chris and Margaret Urban. Eva was just one month shy of her 89th birthday. Eva was preceded by her husband Marvin in 1975 and her son Larry in 1977.
Eva is survived by her son, Robert, Parker, South Dakota, daughter, Diane Shea, Vancouver, British Columbia, son Arnold (Janet) Shea, San Diego, California and one grandson, Everet Shea, San Diego, California.
Eva died peacefully after recently going through a rapid decline in her health. She had worked at John Morrell and Company in Sioux Falls for 27 years before retiring. Eva had a tireless love of knitting, crocheting and all things outdoors. She loved showing her children the farmstead outside of Hartford where she was born.

Richard C. Wolner

Richard C. Wolner, 78, Redfield, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at Community Memorial Hospital, Redfield.
His memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at the Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, with the Rev. Stephen Perry officiating.

Marcella Helen Artz
(February 27, 1926 - September 24, 2011)

Marcella “Marcie” Artz, 85, formerly of Northville, SD, died on September 24, 2011, at Palisade Manor in Garretson. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 22, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Spearfish, South Dakota, with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. Burial will be held at 9:00 A.M. Monday, October 24, at the Black Hills National cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota.
Marcella was born February 27, 1926 in rural Mina, South Dakota, the daughter of William and Margaret Dutenhoeffer. Marcie married Lambert Artz September 11, 1946. Together they farmed near Mina, Ipswich, and Northville, South Dakota. After moving from the farm, they traveled to Kansas as “Artz Harvestors” working north to the Dakotas with an inspired crew. “Mother Goose and The Gander”, as they were affectionately referred, continued the journey until 1984 when they began spending winters in Yuma, Arizona and their summers as campground hosts in Yankton, South Dakota.
She is survived by her six children: Robert (Karol) of Ashton, SD, Sharal (Richard) Akin of Garretson, SD, Allen (Paula) of Highland, CA, Kevin (Patti) of Yankton, SD, David of Wolsey, SD, and Lisa (Blayne) Sandidge of Sturgis, SD; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Hildi (Jack) Barger, Lake Havasu, AZ, Carol (Roy) Volk, Lake Havasu, AZ, Diane (Ron) Ross, Lincoln, NE, and Kathy (Rich) Kriech, Indio, CA; three brothers: Andrew (Bernice), Romona, CA, Kenny, El Cajon, CA, and Duane (Thelma), Scottsbluff, NE.
Marcie was preceded in death by her husband in 2005; and three brothers: William, Arthur and Wilbert Dutenhoeffer.
