Melvin L. Petersen

Melvin L. Petersen, age 78, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Saturday, January 10, 2009, at Avera Yankton Care Center in Yankton.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, on Wednesday, January 14, 2009, at Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Reverend Ralph Egbert officiating. Burial will be in the Vangen Lutheran cemetery in Mission Hill, South Dakota with military honors provided by the Rudolph-Christensen American Legion Post No. 237. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Tuesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Pallbearers are Ben Van Osdel, Barry Van Osdel, Mike Petersen, Tad Petersen, Herb Wounded Head, and Jeremy Bachman.
Melvin L. Petersen was born January 29, 1930, to John and Gina (Eide) Petersen in rural Irene, South Dakota. Hew grew up in the Volin area and attended Clay Valley and Remp Schools. He worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army on January 16, 1952, to serve in the Korea War. After the war, Melvin returned to South Dakota where he worked for area farmers as a hired hand. In 1966, he started working for the Human Services Center in Yankton until he retired in 1993, 27 years later.
He was a member of the Rudolph-Christensen American Legion Post No. 237. He was an avid supporter of Yankton sports. He was always friendly and loved baseball, the Yankees, fishing, and country music.
Survivors include his four brothers, Kenneth (Jane) Petersen of Gayville, South Dakota, Orlin (Dorothy) Petersen of Yankton, Clifford Petersen, and Johnny Petersen both of Volin, South Dakota; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eilene Van Osdel and Grace Johnson.

Ann van der Geest
(March 26, 1928 - August 12, 2010)

RAPID CITY - Ann Urup van der Geest, 82, Rapid City, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at her home. She was born March 26, 1928, to Johannes and Mathilda Kristensen on a farm in Denmark. She grew up in the Danish countryside and was educated there. She married Thomas Urup and to their union was born their beloved only child, a daughter, Ellie. They immigrated to the U.S. in 1950 and settled in Vermillion. She took great pleasure in raising her daughter as a loving mother. She helped her husband in their many business ventures in Vermillion. She enjoyed getting together with many friends and family for card games and parties. She hosted many wonderful family get-togethers in their beautiful home. After their retirement they enjoyed traveling by motorhome to see much of the U.S. She especially enjoyed making meals for her three grandchildren as they each attended school at USD. Her Danish soup and cinnamon rolls were a favorite among her grandchildren. After her husband Thomas' death she moved to Rapid City to be close to her family. Here she settled in well and made many new friends, often over a game of bridge. She volunteered at the RCRH gift shop and Stav Kirke. She married Jack van der Geest in 2002. They had much in common and a similar history of growing up in Europe during the war. The two enjoyed many trips together for pleasure, her favorite being their trip to Hawaii. They also traveled to share the story of his Holocaust survival and his book, "Was God on Vacation." She was a generous and gracious daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She took great pleasure in attending church after coming to faith in Christ. She relished spending time with family and friends, reading, playing cards, traveling, and having a good dessert. She is survived by her daughter, Ellie Tomlinson and her husband Dale; grandchildren, Michele Ladenburger, her husband, Chris, Clint Tomlinson, his wife, Kristen, and Lisa Porch, and her husband, Joel. Anna also is survived by eight great-grandchildren, Matthew, Justin, and Lucas Ladenburger, Allie, Cade and Ryan Porch, and Morgan and Cole Tomlinson; a stepson, Van van der Geest; one brother, Jes Kristensen; a brother-in-law, Jorgen Urup; and special friends, Sam and Jennifer Kooiker and Duva Garlow. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; her husband, Thomas Urup; her husband Jack van der Geest; and her great-grandson, Zachary Ladenburger. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time, which will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Dwight Stensgaard, the Rev. Barbara Gammeter and the Rev. Dan Gammeter officiating. Interment will be at Pine Lawn Memorial Park. Memorials have been established for Calvary Lutheran Church and the Greatest Commandment Church. Arrangements are with Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home.

Rosemary Myers

Memorial services for Rose-mary (Summerside) Myers, 88, Peoria, Ariz., were held Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, at Encanto Com-munity Church, Phoenix, Ariz.
Mrs. Myers died Monday, Jan. 30, 2006, at Boswell Memorial Hospital, Sun City, Ariz.
She was born Nov. 24, 1917, in Redfield to Frank and Caroline Summerside. She married Fred Myers of Redfield Aug. 3, 1943, in Aberdeen, and they lived in Virginia and California while Fred was in the U.S. Navy, eventually settling in Phoenix.
Throughout her life Rose-mary maintained many friendships with Redfield residents.
Survivors include three daughters: Linda Villalobos, Laura Ellison and Peggy DePaoli; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and three brothers: Bob, George and Frank.

Chester H. Meyer

Services for Chester H. Meyer, 86, Racine, Wis., are set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Emmaus Lutheran Church, Racine, with the Rev. Mary Janz officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Memorial Park. The Hanson Funeral Home, Racine, is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Meyer died following heart surgery Saturday, June 3, 2006, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Milwaukee. He had fought cncer for 19 years.
He was born May 13, 1920, in New Ulm, Minn., to Herman and Anna (Backer) Meyer. He married Mabel Harms June 3, 1942, in Crandon. They would have marked their 64th anniversary the day of his death. He was a small grain, dairy and poultry farmer near Redfield for more than 30 years. After moving to Rochester, Minn., in 1965, he worked for the Kahler Corporation repairing commercial equipment. Since retiring in 1982, he had lived in Racine near his daughters and their families.
In South Dakota he served on many township, school, church and state boards and commissions. In Racine, he was an active member of Emmaus Lutheran Church and past member of Golden K Kiwanis. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, crossword puzzles and traveling in all 50 states and abroad with his wife.

Lucille M. Hardie

Services for Lucille M. Hardie, 85, Redfield, were held Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at the Wesleyan Church, Rdfield, with the Rev. Steve Wilkins officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, Redfield. The Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hardie died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Community Memorial Hospital, Redfield.
She was born Oct. 22, 1919, near Ashton to Carl and Cora (Yetter) Gerriets. She grew up in Redfield and graduated from Redfield High School.
She married Ralph Hardie Oct. 31, 1941, in Madison, Minn., and they farmed west of Redfield until 1978. They continued living on the farm until 2004, when they moved into the Eastern Star Apartments.
She was a member of the Wesleyan Church. She “enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, refinishing antiques and shopping. She also enjoyed cooking and baking and seldom used a recipe. She looked forward to the Thursday Coffee Club at Leo’s Café She was a wonderful wife and mother, who will be greatly missed.”
Survivors include her husband: Ralph, Redfield.; two sons and their families: R. Wayne (Linda) Hardie, Los Alamos, N.M., and their daughters, Elizabeth (Mrs. Hugo) Nanez and their children, Allison, Nicholas and Krista (Mrs. Randy) Page, and Dr. Richard (Pat) Hrdie, Sioux Falls, and their chidren, Erin, Brian and Brent; a son-in-law: Patrick Suiter and his children, Gerriet and Chelsea; two brothers: Don Gerriets, Davis, Calif., and Gordon Gerriets, Minneapolis, Minn..
She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter: Cheryl Suiter (1995), one brother: Paul, and two sisters: Ruth Chinn and Anna Belle McCarty.

J. R. Yde
(May 26, 1952 - October 19, 2011)

Jan Robert Yde was born May 26, 1952 at Madison General Hospital to Richard, Sr. and Lola (Estenson) Yde of Madison, Wisconsin. He grew up in Orchard Ridge and attended James Madison Memorial High School, graduating with honors and was a member of a Wisconsin State High School Champion Cross-Country team. From there, he would enroll at his mother’s alma mater, The University of Wisconsin – River Falls. He graduated in 1975 with honors, receiving his Golden R, just as his mother had. After graduation, he moved to rural Renner, SD and founded Sioux Valley Environmental in 1977. On October 15, 1983, he married Julie (Eigen) Yde of Sioux City, IA. In 1985, they bought a house near West Nidaros in rural Renner and raised their three kids: Dane (25), Katrina (22), and Jorgen (17).
J.R. loved baseball, fishing, hockey, hunting, but most of all, being with his family. He joined the Renner Rangers amateur baseball team, and played on the club hockey team in Sioux Falls in his early years. When his older son Dane reached high school, he was one of numerous parents that helped found high school baseball in South Dakota. He would form a co-operative Class B high school team made up of Baltic, Tri-Valley, Montrose, West Central, and Sioux Falls Christian high schools and make their home at historic Renner Field. His team would finish with the league best record and as the runner-up in the state tournament in 2001. The following year, the Rangers won the State Championship and J.R. was named South Dakota High School Baseball’s Coach of the Year. He coached numerous youth baseball and hockey teams for his two sons. He also enjoyed hunting with his father and brothers and spending time at the lake cabin fishing with his wife, daughter, and two boys.
Upon moving to South Dakota, J.R. would join West Nidaros Lutheran Church in rural Crooks. He served on numerous committees, taught Sunday school and even filled in to lead worship when the Pastor was absent. J.R. was a proud businessman and a successful entrepreneur. He started his business from scratch in 1977, working in the upper Midwest. After 34 years, his business would become international, as J.R. worked throughout North America. He was very active in numerous state associations within the water and wastewater industry, and served as the President of the South Dakota Water Operators Association from 1996-1997. He designed and built innovative systems and currently holds three patents and a trademark. Most of all, J.R. enjoyed working with people throughout the water community and made many lasting friendships.
J.R. passed away at Sanford Hospital on Wednesday evening, October 19, 2011, just five short months after his youngest son, Jorgen.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, and son Jorgen. He is survived by his wife, Julie (Sioux Falls, SD) and children, Dane and Katrina; parents, Richard, Sr. and Lola (Madison, WI);siblings, Richard, Jr. (Katie) Yde (Madison, WI); Linda (Tom) Holmes (Oregon, WI); Mark (Lisa) Yde (Fort Wayne, IN); Paul (Sarah Elder) Yde (University Park, MD); Carl (Lynn) Yde (Madison, WI); Helen (Greg) (Marshfield, WI).Many cousins and relatives also survive him.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Jorgen Yde Benefit Fund at First Premier Bank. .

Monica Friese

A mass of Christian burial for Monica Friese, 52, Rapid City, was held Friday Nov. 26, 2004, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Redfield, with Father Terry Anderson officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn cemetery, Redfield. The Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Friese died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She was born Sept. 30, 1952, in Rantoul, Ill., to Herman and Donna (Hagstrom) Schmidt. She grew up on a farm near Marion and graduated from Marion High School in 1970. She worked at Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield for many years as a respiratory therapist and an EMT. Her first call as an EMT took place May 17, 1988. She owned 4J’s Con-venience Store and also managed the Subway in Redfield before moving to the Black Hills. While living in the Black Hills she managed a campground and a Subway before finding her place at United Blood Services in Rapid City.
She served as a state EMT for several years. She “enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren and helping others.”
Survivors include her four children: Justin (DeAnne) Friese and children Cody, Kyle and Austin, Redfield, Mrs. Bri-an (Janelle) Stewart, Redfield, and Jodi and Jennifer Friese, Rapid City; one brother: Marlin (Gladys) Schmidt, Tulare; and one sister: Mrs. Jeff (Malinda) Nowell, Tulare.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Jerome "Pete" Schwebach
(August 27, 1926 - October 10, 2011)

Pete Schwebach, 85, died peacefully of lung cancer at the Dougherty Hospice House on Monday Oct. 10th.
Mass of Christian Burail will be 1:00 PM Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Dell Rapids. Visitation will be from 2-5:00 PM Thursday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. A Wake Service will be at 7:00 PM Thursday at St. Mary Catholic Church with a Rosary to follow. Burial will be in the St. Mary cemetery with Military Honors by the Dell Rapids American Legion.
Born August 27th, 1926 in Dell Rapids, Pete graduated from St. Mary's School, joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 in 1944, and attended SDSU. On October 11, 1952, he married Marie Mihin. All his life, Pete worked in business on Dell Rapids' main street. He founded Schwebach Insurance and Real Estate in 1960. Pete enjoyed serving people. He was a life-long resident of Dell Rapids. He loved Dell Rapids and his family very much.
He was a member of the American Legion for over 60 years and a life long member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie, his five children, Karen Wallenberg (Brad), Tim, Rob (Lynn), Jeff (Denise) and Tom (Tami), his fourteen grandchildren, and his sister, Rita Walker. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Nick, Eugene, Len, Fritz and sisters Agnes and Mary.
Memorials may be directed to the St. Mary's building fund.

MENNO — Ervin Schempp, 87, of Menno died Sunday (April 12, 2009) at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton.
Services are pending under the care of Aisenbrey-Opsahl-Kostel Funeral Home & Crematory, Menno.

Lowell R. Gothier

Lowell R. Gothier, age 81, of Obert, NE, died on Friday, October 3, 2008 at the Hillcrest Care Center in Laurel, NE. Services are pending at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family (Sacred Heart) Catholic Church in Wynot, Nebraska with the Rev. James F. McCluskey officiating. Burial will be in Sts. Philip & James cemetery with Military graveside rites by the Wynot American Legion Post #31.
Visitation will be on Monday from 1-5:00 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. There will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Family Church in Wynot. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, at church, one hour prior to services.

Leona Schindler

Leona Schindler, age 89, of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Hartington.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, March 2, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. Jeff Loseke officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 1-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will continue on Monday, at church, from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

William “Bill” Morton

Services for William “Bill” Morton, 66, Conde, were held Saturday, Feb. 11, 2006, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ferney, with the Rev. Lloyd Redhage officiating. Burial was in St. Paul’s cemetery. The Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton, was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Jim Zeck, Rich Zeck, Bob McGuire, Bill McGuire, Chuck McGuire and Rick Pigors.
Mr. Morton died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at his residence in Conde following a courageous battle with cancer.
William Allen Morton was born July 29, 1939, in Aberdeen to Romeo and Ruth (Gooding) Morton. He grew up in Groton where he attended school.
He married Darlene Pigors June 8, 1958, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Groton, and they made their home in the Groton area. Bill worked for many area farmers until 1961, when he was injured in a farm accident.
Bill and his family then moved to Fargo, N.D., where he attended Barber College. After graduation he worked at Fritz’s Barber Shop until the spring of 1967, when they moved to Aneta, N.D., where he opened his own shop. In the fall of 1968 they moved to Poplar Grove, Ill., where Bill worked at the Chrysler Corporation in Belvidere. In 1976 they moved back to South Dakota where Bill was a custodian at Conde Public School and SDDC-Redfield until retiring in July 2004. He also shoed horses for 40 years.
He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Ferney, where he taught Sunday School and was Sunday School superintendent. He also drove a school bus and served as an EMT in Conde. He “enjoyed fishing, bow hunting, bowling, raising and riding horses, family camping trips and spending time with his grandchildren and great-granddaughter.”
Survivors include his wife: Darlene, Conde; two sons: Tim (Rose) Morton, Revillo, and Todd (Peggy) Morton, Milbank; three daughters: Mrs. Doug (Heidi) Krueger, Groton, Valerie Rush, Littleton, Colo., and Nona DesChamp, Florida; two sisters: Mrs. Jim (Judy) Zeck, Conde, and Bonnie McGuire, Belvidere, Ill.; nine grandchildren: Scott, Troy, Billie Jo, Josh, Zack, Jeff, Jamie, Dylan and Shaun; one great-granddaughter: Ava Rose; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one grandson.
