Leroy Johnke

CENTERVILLE -- Leroy Emmett Johnke was born October 25, 1945 in Viborg, SD, to Francis Leroy and Anna Mae (Frinkman) Johnke. He grew up in the Centerville area, graduating from Centerville High School in 1963. He attended Sioux Falls College and South Dakota State University, earning a B.S. and M.S. in Agronomy from SDSU. Leroy served his country in the United States Navy from 1968 to 1972.

Ray G. Hanson

Ray G. Hanson, age 85, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, October 10, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Visitation with the family is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, on Monday, October 13, 2008 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton followed by a celebration of life service at 7:00 PM with Chaplain Sister Joyce Streff officiating.
Ray was born on August 10, 1923 near Gayville, South Dakota to Henry B. and Maud L. (Reeves) Hanson. He grew up in Gayville, graduating from Gayville High School in 1942. After school, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on March 18, 1943. He served in the Southwest Pacific Theatre. He was discharged on November 1, 1945 with the rank of corporal. On May 18, 1946, Ray married Stella Peterson in Yankton. After their marriage, he lived and worked in Yankton for a short time before opening Ray's Service in Gayville. He operated that business until 1964 and then worked for Morgen Manufacturing in Yankton until his retirement in 1988. In retirement, Ray worked for Sunshine Grocery in Yankton. Ray enjoyed watching baseball, especially his two favorite teams, the Braves and the Twins. He also enjoyed gardening, backyard bird watching and playing horseshoes.
Ray is survived by his wife of 62 years, Stella Hanson of Yankton; four children: Ray Jr. (Linda) Hanson of Huntsville, Alabama, Grace (Kaleb) Boyd of Sunset, Utah, Stephanie (Jerry) O'Connor of Omaha, Nebraska and Rodney (Barbara) Hanson of Yankton; and three grandchildren: Andrew O'Connor, Kelly (Jonathan) Nice, and Michael O'Connor.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Leo K., Lyle R., Earl V. and Marvin O. Hanson.

Randy Jon Larson
(March 17, 1973 - November 20, 2012)

Randy Larson, 39, passed away at his home near Crooks on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 24 at West Nidaros Lutheran Church near Crooks with burial following in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday afternoon from 3:00 to 7:00 with the family present from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the West Nidaros Church.
Randy Jon Larson, son of Wayne S. and Linda K. (Johnson) Larson, Baltic, was born at Dell Rapids, SD on March 17, 1973. He was baptized and confirmed at West Nidaros. He received his education at Baltic graduating from high school in 1991. He also attended SDSU and Mitchell Technical Institute where he received his Assoc. of Applied Science in Telecommunications degree. He began working for Golden West in Dell Rapids and then later, Baltic Telecom which is currently Alliance Communications where he worked until his death.
Randy enjoyed growing up and working on his family’s farm and helping his father and brothers with planting, harvesting and repairing machinery. He was gifted at fixing, building and repairing. Randy was proud of his children and spent a lot of his time raising and entertaining them with rides on ATV’s, sleds and their outdoor pool. Another highlight of his life was a yearly fall hunting trip with his brother and friends.
Randy is survived by his son, Grant Wayne Larson, and his daughter Lacey Kay Larson (their mother, Julie Hammond and her children, Ann Marie and William) Crooks; his parents, his siblings, Darin (Connie) Larson, his twin, Ryan (Shelly) Larson and Louisa (Jade) Kvale; nieces, Madeline and Meredith Larson, Elin Kvale and nephew, Sutton Larson; his grandmother, Marilyn (Cortland) Johnson, all of Baltic; his aunts and uncles, Gloria (David) Mills, Kent (Cindy) Johnson, Wyn (Char) Johnson, all of Baltic, Merrill (Jane) Larson of Sioux Falls, Becky (Jim) Logue of Elkhorn, NE; and cousins, Matt (April) Mills of Bremerton, WA, Cortney Mills of Miami, FL, Amanda Mills of Los Gatos, CA, Alex Mills of Colton, Kerri Rollag of Baltic, Kelsi Johnson of Sioux Falls, Wyatt Johnson of Crystal, MN, Katie, Ethan, Danya, Kyler Johnson of Baltic, Jason (Earlene) Larson of Brandon, Erin (Nick) Bradley of Elkhorn, NE, Jed (Jessica) Logue of Statesville, NC, Amber (Zach) Link of Elkhorn, NE, Joseph Logue of Elkhorn, NE.
Randy was preceded in death by his grandparents, Grant and Olga Larson, his grandfather, Cortland Johnson and his uncle, Craig Johnson.

Eric Morris Roberts

Eric Morris Roberts, age 86 of Hartington, NE, died on Tuesday, December 02, 2008 at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, December 5, 2008 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartington with Rev. Bob Bryan officiating. Burial will be in the Hartington City cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 1:00 to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service and Video Tribute at 7:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. Visitation will begin one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.

Melissa A. Martsfield

A memorial service for Melissa A. Martsfield, 57, Redfield, was held Monday, Nov. 22, 2004, at the Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, with the Rev. Tim Fugman officiating. Cremains burial will take place at a later date in Arizona.
Mrs. Martsfield died Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at Community Memorial Hospital, Redfield.
She was born June 1, 1947, in Coffeyville, Kan., to Carroll and Ina Jean (Argyle) Prather. The family moved to Tucson, Ariz., on her first birthday and she “always loved the desert and considered Tucson her home.”
She raised five children while attending college to obtain a degree in social services. She worked at the Tucson Center for Women and Children and then held several positions with the State of Arizona before moving to Aurora, Colo. In 1985 she moved to San Diego, Calif., where she met Richard Martsfield. They were married in 1988 and moved to Ashton to care for Richard’s ailing father. Melissa was employed by South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield until illness forced her to retire. She “enjoyed working with the individuals. She had a great interest in antiques and Southwestern artifacts. She was an avid reader and enjoyed her family and friends.”
Survivors include her husband: Richard Martsfield, Ashton; her children: Chellie Jones, Georgia, Tiffaney Harris, Redfield, John (Amy) Harris, Tucson, Ariz., Scott (Pauline) Harris, Tucson, and Tessa Ekenstam, Colorado; six grandchildren: Amber Harris, Red-field, and Jesse, Amy, Janna, Elliott and Laurel, all of Tucson, Ariz.; two brothers: David Prather, Tucson, and Thomas Prather, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; one sister: Karen Jerman, Tucson; her mother-in-law: Helen Swoyer, Redfield; brother-in-law: Howard Dumont, Arizona; and nephews: Michael and Benjamin Jerman, California.

Elaine Hoffman

Services for Elaine A. Hoffman, 73, Rockham, are set for 10;30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2004, at the United Methodist Church, Rockham, with the Rev. Carl Hedman officiating. Burial will be in the Rockham cemetery near Rockham. The Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hoffman died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at her home near Rockham.
She was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Redfield to Richard and Alvina (Miller) Clark. She graduated from Redfield High School in 1949.
She married Willard Hoffman June 11, 1950, in Redfield and they farmed west of Rockham. She “loved her life on the farm.”
Elaine was “very active in her family and community.” She was president of the Faulkton school board, a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women, sang in the choir for many years and attended Bible study. She was “a strong believer in the Yelduz Shrine, serving as past president of the Ladies Auxiliary and Daughters of the Nile.”
She “enjoyed crocheting afghans, find-a-word puzzles, attending her grandchildren’s activities and spending time with her beloved husband Willard. She will be deeply missed.”
Survivors include her husband: Willard, Rockham; three children: Bruce Hoffman, Rockham, Suzan Hoffman, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Harlow (Lorri) Peterson, Aberdeen; seven grandchildren: Travis, Tyler and Lacie Hoffman, Kayla Weis, and Nathan, Scott and Chelsea Speck; and one brother: Don (Lorraine) Clark, Golden, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

Gunnar Duane Becker

The funeral service for Pfc. Gunnar Becker, 19, Forestburg, who was killed in action in Iraq Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, was held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Sanborn Central School, Forestburg, with the Revs. Bill Miller, Woonsocket, and Vaughn Nesheim, Colorado, officiating. Burial was in Silver Creek cemetery, rural Forestburg, with military rites. The Basham Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Lee Hinker, Blaine Byrd, Leon Fredrichs, Rick Tuffs, Thad Baysinger, Jeff Hinker, John Doren and Mark Snedeker. Honorary pallbearers were Tim Evers, Lyle Collins, Roger Hinker, Cory Collins, Brad Becker, Dan Mueller, Cory Olsen, Bill Hein, Nick Diede, Tom Scott, Richard Miller and Shane Baysinger.
Gunnar Duane Becker was born Jan. 22, 1985, at Aberdeen to Debey (Huber) Senska and Duane R. Becker. He attended school in Woonsocket and Artesian-Letcher, graduating in 2003 He grew up near Forest-burg, where he worked as a farmhand for Shane Baysinger and Roger and Lee Hinker. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in June 1999 and was a member of the Forestburg Lutheran Church.
He joined the Army and received basic training at Fort Knox, Ky., graduating Dec. 17, 2003. He was a member of the 2nd Platoon “Bandits” Bravo Company 2/63 AR Battalion. He was stationed in Germany until being deployed to Iraq Feb. 14, 2004.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Debey and Doug Senska; his father: Duane Becker; one sister: Dianna Jo Becker; two half-brothers: Jesse Huber and Derik Eberlee; one half-sister: Stephanie Bonin; his grandparents: Mike and Joann Huber, Doland, and Dean and Dianna Senska, Woonsocket; several nieces and nephews; and numerous aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Harold and Vera Becker, and a half-sister: Dedree Becker.

Doris L. Morten

Doris L. Morten, age 81 of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hartington with the Rev. Gary Kimm officiating. Burial will be in the Morten Family cemetery in rural Hartington, Nebraska.
Visitation will be on Monday from 3-8:00 p.m. with a prayer service and video tribute at 8:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. Visitation will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to services at the church.

William C. Lydic
(October 9, 1920 - April 24, 2012)

William (Bill) Christen Lydic, 91, of Chester passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2012.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Saturday, April 28, 2012 at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Wentworth, SD. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery, rural Chester.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM with the family present at 5:00 PM and a Prayer service at 7:00 PM Friday at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Dell Rapids.
Bill was born on a farm near Egan, SD on October 9, 1920, to parents George and Hannah (Thouland) Lydic. He passed away on April 24, 2012, at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids, SD. He was baptized on August 16, 1951.
The family later moved to Sisseton, SD. Bill worked as a farmhand until entering the Army during World War II. He served in the Aleutian Islands and Japan as a Radar Technician. He was a member of the Chester American Legion for over 50 years.
Bill married Louise Granum on September 7, 1951, in Sioux Falls, SD. They farmed near Crooks and later moved to a farm near Chester, SD. When he retired from farming, they moved into Chester, later moving to Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids, and then Dells Nursing and Rehab Center.
Bill had been a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Chester until its closing, holding several offices during that time and was currently a member of St. Peters Lutheran Church in Wentworth. Bill had also been a member of the Chester Senior Citizens while living in Chester.
Bill is survived by his wife Louise, children Luanna (Llyn) Shuck, Colton, Nancy (Darrel) Presuhn, Madison, Ken (Dawn) Chester, 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers George (Violet) Lydic, Denver, CO, and LeRoy (Tammy) Lydic, Sioux Falls; sisters Mary (Randy) Newcomer, Mitchell and Patricia (George) Skelton, Casa Grande, AZ, and sisters-in-law Lavonne Dafoe and Marilyn Granum, Sioux Falls, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Louanna and Dorothy.
Family was very important to him and he was very important to his family. Although he will be greatly missed, he is in a better place.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Peters handicapped accessible building fund or Parkinson disease research.

Rudolph C. Lammers

Rudolph C. Lammers, age 100, of Hartington, NE, died on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Golden Living Center in Hartington, Nebraska.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at 10:30 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fordyce, NE with Rev. David Fulton officiating. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist cemetery in Fordyce. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm with a rosary at 2:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. There will be a Vigil Service and Video Tribute at the church at 7:00 pm on Tuesday. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Mike Lammers, Art Wiebelhaus, Danette Schmidt, Scott Lammers, Joe Lammers, Ross Lammers, Jacob Lammers, John Wiebelhaus, and Steve Chalupnik
Rudy was born on June 18, 1908 to Joseph H. and Catherine (Willembring) Lammers. He lived west of Hartington in the Lammers Ranch area all of his life where he farmed. Rudy's education was mostly at the Lammers Ranch School, a year in Fordyce to get a religious education so he could make his First Holy Communion. Rudy attended Trinity High School and an accounting school in Sioux City and proceeded on to Lincoln where he received his diploma in Auto and Tractor School in 1929. Throughout his school years, he received many awards for his meticulous penmanship and spelling. Rudy married Rose J. Arens on January 5, 1932 in Hartington, Nebraska. To this union, seven children were born. In March of 2004 Rudy became a resident of the Golden Living Center in Hartington, Nebraska.
Rudy was a member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a former trustee of the church. He also was a former member of the Board of Directors for the Farmers Union Coop in Hartington, Nebraska. Rudy enjoyed playing the violin and harmonica. He was an excellent herdsman, loved to hunt, and always kept busy on the farm. Rudy carried on the tradition of his father's apple orchard and his 3 sons continue this tradition today. He was "the patriarch" of his family, was a very kind man and always had a great sense of humor with a quick wink. God and family were Rudy's top priorities.
Rudy is survived by 7 children and their spouses, Cyril and Irene Lammers of Fordyce; Clair and Vivian Lammers of Fairbanks, Alaska; Vivian and Alburn Wiebelhaus of Aurora, Colorado; Angela and Armand Wiebelhaus of Yankton; Joan and Sam Brice of Fairbanks, Alaska; Jeanne and Don Schmidt of Crofton; Mark Lammers of Hartington, Nebraska; 36 grandchildren, 73 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren, a sister, Adeline Hansen of Houston, Texas; and a sister in law, Margaret Lammers of Hartington, Nebraska.
Rudy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Rose, 4 brothers, Ray, Alfred, Hugo, and Arthur Lammers, 5 sisters, Hilda Filips, Alphonsa Pautler, Rita Love, Dora Lammers, and Lucina Prier, a great grandson, Peter Anderson, a son in law, John Chalupnik, and 2 daughters in law, Phyllis Lammers, and Nancy Lammers.

Elvira Mary Kathol

Elvira Mary Kathol, age 94, of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family (Sts. Peter & Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley with the Rev. Michael Keating and Rev. Quentin Kathol officiating.
Burial will be in the Sts. Peter & Paul cemetery, Bow Valley.
Visitation will be on Friday from 3-8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Church in Bow Valley. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska.
Pallbearers will be Luke Kathol, Emily Kathol, Michael Kathol Brian DeBlauw, Chelsy Kathol and Jennifer Suing.
Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren and members of the Bow Valley Rosary Club.
Elvira was born on January 13, 1914 at Bow Valley, NE to Anton and Mary (Schnuttgen) Wortmann. She attended Bunker Hill School District 72 southeast of Bow Valley and lived in the Bow Valley area all of her life. She married Frank A. Kathol on May 12, 1936 in Bow Valley. She had been a resident of Avera Sister James Care Center since January of 2008.
Elvira was a member of the Holy Family (Sts Peter and Paul) Catholic Church in Bow Valley, the Altar Society, Christian Mothers, and the Bow Valley Rosary Club. She had great faith in God and a deep love for her family. She loved to garden, raise flowers and crochet. She retained a great knowledge of people and events from the past. Her grandchildren were especially impressed with her zest for life.
Elvira is survived by 4 children and their spouses, Emma Lou and David DeBlauw of Rockford, Illinois, Leon and Marilyn Kathol of Yankton, Earl and LuAnn Kathol of Yankton, Alvin and Laurie Kathol of Bow Valley, a daughter in law, Mary Ann Kathol of Yankton, 27 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, a brother, Francis and Irene Wortmann of Hartington, Nebraska, 2 sisters, Theodora and Edgar Wuebben, of Wynot, and Josephine and John Olinger of Sioux Falls, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank, on Dec. 11, 1987 at the age of 80, a son Mark, a sister, Eleanor Pinkelman, 3 brothers, August, Rudolph, and Monsignor Edgar Wortmann.

Lillian June Atkin

Lillian June Atkin, 94, died Nov. 11, 2004, with her daughter Joan at her side.
She was married to the late Horace E. Atkin. June and Horace moved to Redfield in 1950, where he became administrator of the Community Memorial Hospital until 1974.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Literary Guild and Fisher Grove Country Club.
Survivors include one daughter and husband: Mrs. David (Joan) Mallender; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church.
