Father Dickes was known as a man who committed himself to a life with the Lord, and being at the disposition of everyone - the suffering, the disabled, children and young people, married couples, their families and the elderly. He loved the people he served. "Beneath the pulpit image" was a family man with a rare sense of humor, a boyish spirit, a great tease and one who enjoyed a good card game, music, sports, horse racing, travel in and out of the country and was an avid reader. Rural life held a sacred place in his heart. A leisurely drive in the country, visiting the family farm, was life giving and time well spent for him.

A week later, he celebrated his first Mass at his home parish, the first priest ordained from St. John the Baptist Church.

He served at parishes outside of Omaha which include St. Henry in Howells, Sts. Peter and Paul in Butte, St. Wenceslaus in Dodge, St. Mary's in Schuyler, St. Michael's in Albion, Assumption in West Point, and St. John's in Pender. His journey of faith carried the flame of the love of Jesus to the people of God. His gentle, compassionate and generous spirit touched the hearts of many people. Father Jerome was a gift to the Lord, to his family and to all he served.
Catholic education was a big part of Father Dickes' life. Most of the parishes in which he ministered had a Catholic school connected to them. Before moving into a retirement center, he gave his home in Yankton to West Catholic School Endowment in Fordyce. Father Jerome spent the last four years of his life at Avera Majestic Bluffs Sister James Care Center.
