Milton "Pin" Merry
(March 27, 1920 - January 7, 2013)

Milton “Pin” Merry, 92, of Dell Rapids passed away Monday, January 7, 2013 at The Avera Dells Area Health Center.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 10, 2013 at United Methodist Church in Dell Rapids. Burial will be in the Dell Rapids cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 PM Wednesday with the family present from 5-7:00 PM at Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids.
Milton was born March 27, 1920 in Logan Township east of Dell Rapids to parents Grey and Emma (Norgaard) Merry. The family moved to Dell Rapids in December of 1920. He grew up and received his education in Dell Rapids, graduating from Dell Rapids High School in 1940. After graduation he was employed at Merry Brothers Garage.
Pin married Adelia "Dee Dee" Erickson on February 22, 1944 at the bride’s parent’s home in Blinsmon Township in Moody County. The couple moved to a farm in Logan Township at that time, residing there for 49 years. They retired from farming and had their farm sale September 18, 1993. They moved to a house on Wyland Dr. in Dell Rapids September 21, 1993. In 2007 they moved to Orchard Hills in Dell Rapids. Dee Dee passed away July 25, 2011.
Pin was an active member of United Methodist Church, a board member of Hart School #27, Logan Township and Dell Rapids cemetery. He also was a member of the Farm Bureau and IOOF Lodge #8 where he held local and district offices and was the Goodwill Ambassador for Dell Rapids. Pin especially enjoyed playing horseshoes and was very good at it. He belonged to many leagues and played tournaments around the state. He was a director for the State Horseshoe League for six years. Pin was honored September 2, 2000 when he was inducted into the South Dakota State Horseshoe Hall of Fame at a banquet in Madison, SD.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Stuart (Janice) Merry, Garrison, ND; daughter, Toni Lynne Poor Bear, Seattle, WA; fourteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Irma Etcheverry, San Jose, CA and Georgia (Gordon) Lease, Rapid City, SD and many other relatives and friends.
Pin was preceded in death by his wife, Adelia; parents, Grey and Emma; son, Gordon Arthur; daughter, Bonita Louise and sister, Ora Jane Brooks.

Larkin B. Person
(September 3, 1923 - August 29, 2012)

Larkin Benjamin Person, 88, of rural Sioux Falls, passed away on August 29, 2012, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 1, 2012, at Benton Lutheran Church, rural Crooks. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 P.M. Friday at the church.
Larkin was born September 3, 1923, at Sioux Falls. He grew up in the Crooks area and graduated from Lyons High School in 1941. Larkin married Ella Leila Johnson of rural Crooks, at Benton Lutheran Church on October 18, 1945. They farmed with his parents in the Crooks and Ellis area before moving to their own farm near Sioux Falls in the early 1950’s. Together, they operated a high school senior and wedding photography business while raising hogs, sheep, oats, corn, alfalfa, and soybeans on their farm. He also managed the camera department at K-Mart South from 1963 to 1969. Larkin never really retired, taking pictures into his 80’s and doing the combine harvest in the fall of 2011. After Ella died at Thanksgiving of 2011, Larkin moved to Ellis to live with his son. After a hernia operation in May of 2012, Larkin lived at Bethany Lutheran Home in Sioux Falls.
Larkin was a lifelong member of Benton Lutheran, serving on the church council, Men in Mission, and the couples club. He belonged to the Camera Club, Imagemasters, the Professional Photographers of America, Hayward PTA, Farmers Union, and the Wayne Township Volunteer Fire Department. He loved taking his wife to town for a chocolate shake, relaxing in the big chair, having cats on his lap, reading the newspaper, and watching TV with Ella by his side.
Larkin is survived by a son, Larry, of Ellis; two brothers-in-law: Glenn Johnson, of Sioux Falls, and Clifford (Darlene) Johnson, of Sioux Falls; special friends, Leonard and Lori Gracjzyk, of Sioux Falls; nieces, nephews, and other relatives, friends, and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry Benjamin and Amy Cecelia (Gilseth) Person; his wife, Ella; uncles: Otto & Alfred Person, Steven & Owen Gilseth; and aunts: Bessie Gilseth and Julia Berg.

Jim Climer

Jim Climer, age 51, of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Friday, October 10, 2008 at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, October 13, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating. Burial will be in the St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington, Nebraska. Visitation with the family present will be on Sunday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm with a Vigil Service at 7:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska.
Jim was born on February 1, 1957 at Pender, Nebraska to Verne and Sally (Carlson) Climer. He grew up in Hartington, Nebraska and graduated from Hartington Public High School in 1975. He married Marjorie Kathol on March 13, 1976 at Bow Valley, NE. After their marriage they lived north of Hartington, in Norfolk and in Bakersfield, CA until returning to Hartington, Nebraska in 1982. Jim operated a body shop until the early 1990's when he began Climer Trucking. He loved driving his truck, spending time with family, old cars, motorcycles, and hunting. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington, Nebraska.
Survivors include his wife Marjorie Climer of Hartington, 4 children; Josh and Candice Climer of Hartington, Sarah and Eric Wynia of Wausa, NE, Aaron Climer of Hartington, Cory and Joe Folkers of Yankton, a granddaughter, Addison Wynia, his mother, Sally Climer of Hartington, a sister, Susan and Einar Maisch of Roseville, CA, and a brother, Verne and Kathy Climer of Phoenix.
He was preceded in death by his father, Verne Climer Sr. and an infant sister Ellen Climer.

Barbara Rae Bussey
(August 26, 1952 - May 1, 2012)

Barbara Johnson Bussey, age 59, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Garretson and Tampa, peacefully went to be with the Lord on May 1, 2012, at her home in Sioux Falls. A memorial service will begin at 3:00 P.M. Sunday, May 6, 2012, at Church at the Gate, 6820 W 26th St, Sioux Falls, with a time to greet the family beginning at 2:30 P.M.
Barb was born on August 26, 1952, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Henry and Ardyce (Miller) Johnson. After the death of her father in 1959, she was lovingly raised by her mother, Ardyce and step-father, Lyle Stensland. Barb went to school in Garretson through 5th grade, and then moved to Tampa, Florida in 1963.
In 1970, she graduated from Leto High School with a degree in cosmetology. Barb moved back to South Dakota in 1970 and worked at RosaLee’s Salon in Garretson. Soon after, she moved back to Tampa and worked at USave Grocery Store where she met her husband, William “Red” Bussey. They married in Garretson in 1980. In 2006, Barb and Red moved back to South Dakota to be closer to family.
Barb enjoyed spending time with family and neighbors, playing cards, and attending her nieces and nephews’ activities.
She continued giving in death by being a donor.
She is survived by her husband, William “Red”; step-daughters: Janet-Marie (Bobby) Palmer, Debbie (Peter) Abood, Norma (Charlie) Newgent; 5 grandchildren: Jay Newgent, Meaghan (Jeremy) Koci, Brice Abood, Max Abood, and Nathan Palmer; 1 great-grandchild: Jacob Koci; parents, Lyle & Ardyce Stensland; sister: Linda (friend, Jim) Johnson; brothers: Gary (Carol) Johnson, Terry (Connie) Johnson, Brad (Lisa) Stensland, and Jeff (Annie) Stensland; and several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. Barb was preceded in death by her father, Henry Johnson, and a brother, Ronald.

David Aaron Thomas

David Aaron Thomas, age 29, of rural Tabor, South Dakota died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 21, 2008.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at Calvary Baptist Church at 2407 Broadway in Yankton, South Dakota with the Reverend Jon Cooke officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and video tribute at 7:00 PM. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Pallbearers are Jason Beaudette, Jeremy Eells, Sam Marcotte, Mike Owens, Rich Schaefer, Greg Thomas, J.J. Thomas and Morris VanGerpen. Honorary pallbearers are his children, Katrina and Skyler Thomas and his niece, Kyla Thomas.
David was born on September 18, 1979 in Yankton, South Dakota to Dallas and Lois (Hysell) Thomas. He attended Yankton High School and then worked for several different companies in Yankton including Lyle's Custom Cleaning, Fox Run Quik Lube and Graham Tire. David had a big heart and a contagious smile which could light up a room. He enjoyed the outdoors, whether it was four-wheeling, jeeping, snowmobiling or fishing. David loved being around his friends and loved his children and his family with all of his heart.
David is survived by his two children: Katrina, and her mother, Ivy Covell of Yankton and Skyler, and his mother, Stephanie Budihas of Yankton; parents, Dallas and Lois Thomas of Tabor; paternal grandmother, Edna Thomas of Kimball, SD; sister-in-law, Teresa Thomas of Box Elder; and a niece Kyla Thomas of Salida, Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Chad and Travis Thomas; grandfathers, John Thomas and Harold Hysell; maternal grandmother, Irene (Hysell) French; and an uncle, Darold Thomas.

Glen C. Spear

Glen C. Spear, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, in Stockton, Calif. Graveside services will be held next spring or summer.
He was born Nov. 9, 1913, in Doland to Clarence and Signe Spear.
Except for an eight-year period during and following World War II, Glen lived his life in Spink County: Doland, Ashton, Frankfort and Redfield. The last three years he had lived in Stockton, Calif., with his sons.
Survivors include two sons: John Spear and Charles Spear, both of Stockton, Calif.; one grandson: Matthias Glen Spear, Sacramento; and one sister: Gladys Dahlgren, Bend, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Vernon.

Phyllis Joyce (Genant) Bennett

Phyllis Joyce (Genant) Bennett, age 85, of Scotland, South Dakota, died on Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota.
Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Saturday, March 24, 2007, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in rural Menno, South Dakota, with Reverend Brad Danielson officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Yankton. Visitation will be Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton.
Pallbearers will be Josh Fischer, Mary Bennett, Matthew Bennett, Nick Bennett, Keith Fischer, Trevor Bennett, Tracy Fischer, and Jace Bennett.
Phyllis was born May 18, 1921, on a farm in rural Avon, South Dakota to Philip and Gertrude (Fisher) Genant. She spent most of her life in South Dakota with the exception of two years at Marion, Indiana. She was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church of Avon. She attended Vilhauer and James grade schools and graduated from Avon High School in 1941. After graduating from high school she was employed at the Avon Clarian Office, Methodist Hospital in Mitchell, South Dakota, and also at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton. On June 10, 1953, she married Delbert Bennett in her home in Avon. After their marriage they moved to a farm near Lesterville, South Dakota.
In 1971, Phyllis and her family became members of Our Savior Lutheran Church in rural Menno and members of W.E.L.C.A. She was vice president of W.E.L.C.A. for two years and also taught Sunday school for ten years. In 1983, Delbert and Phyllis retired from the farm and moved back to Avon. After Delbert's death in 1992, Phyllis moved to Menno and later to Scotland where she was employed at the Good Samaritan Center for two years. Last June she moved into the Good Samaritan Living Center in Scotland where she was also a member of the Senior Citizens Center in Scotland. She enjoyed reading, writing letters, doing word search puzzles, but most of all visiting with her children, grandchildren, and other relatives and friends.
Having shared her life are her four children, Duane (Kim) Bennett of Gayville, Philip (Charlene) Bennett of Lesterville, Althea (Gary) Fischer of Lesterville, and Schuyler Bennett of Scotland; eight grandchildren, Nickolas, Trevor, and Jace Bennett of Gayville, Matthew Bennett and his fiance Lacey Paulson of Marshal, Minnesota, Mary Bennett of Randolph, Nebraska, Joshua (Katie) Fischer of Vermillion, Keith Fischer of Sioux Falls, and Tracy Fischer of Scotland; one step granddaughter, Paula (Kelly) Marshal of Gayville; two step great grandsons, Colbey and Cade Rickford and one step great granddaughter, Madeline Elizabeth Marshal all of Gayville.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Delbert in 1992.

Loretta Tracy

Services for Loretta Wolf Tracy, 72, Rapid City, were held Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Rapid City, with Father Kevin Achbach officiating. Inurnment took place following the service at Pine Lawn Memorial Park, Rapid City.
Mrs. Tracy died Wednesday, May 31, 2006, of cancer surrounded and supported by the love of her friends and family.
She was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Napoleon, N.D., to Roy and Julia Wolf. She attended school in Ipswich and at Black Hills State University, Spearfish.
She married Milton (Pat) Tracy in 1951 and they enjoyed 54 years together.
She worked in the Redfield hot lunch program and in Rapid City as a teacher’s aide at Jefferson School and as a salesperson for Barons Dress Shop. She was with Northwestern Bell Telephone for six years as a service representative and business supervisor.
After graduation from Black Hills State University in 1971, she taught for 14 years at Ellsworth Air Force Base and eight years at Bergquist Elementary School.
She enjoyed spending time with the people she loved most, her family and friends. Her concern for others always outweighed her concern for herself and her volunteer work for church and community were testimony to that fact.
She enjoyed swimming at the YMCA, traveling, cooking and gardening. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. She was a devoted daughter and sister, loving wife and mother and a wonderful friend.
Survivors include her husband: Pat Tracy, Rapid City; one daughter and husband: Paula and Bill May, Hanford, Calif.; granddaughters: Melanie and Bill Stretch, Fresno, Calif., and Jill May, Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers: Leroy Wolf, Rapid City, and David Wolf, Phoenix, Ariz.; brothers-in-law: Jerry (Jo) Tracy, Rapid City, Don Tracy, Minneapolis, Minn., and Lee (Alyce) Tracy, Glasgow, Mont.; sister-in-law and husband: Jean and Irve Hanson, Pollock; and many nieces and nephews.

Herbert Joseph Welchert

Herbert Joseph Welchert, age 84, of Yankton, South Dakota, died September 6, 2008, at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Friday, September 12, 2008 at St. Benedict Catholic Church in Yankton. Military honors will be provided by the Ernest-Bowyer VFW Post No. 791 following the mass. He will be buried next to his wife in the Veterans Memorial cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey. Visitation will be Thursday, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a rosary at 7:00 PM and vigil service at 7:30 PM.
Pallbearers are Donald Morman, David Morman, J. Keith Wing, and Dean Morman.
Herbert Welchert was born October 14, 1923 in Fordyce, Nebraska to John and Bertha (Haas) Welchert. A proud alumni of Sacred Heart School, Herbert "Hoover" Welchert attended Yankton High School, Class of 1942 and was a star football player for the Bucks. He was considered (in a 198-'s article by Colin Kapitan "All-time Yankton High Team Selected") as one of the 11 best of YHS. In Colin's Sideline Slants, Herb was described as "the best of a half dozen standouts in the years 1940 and 1949...[Herbert] has to be one of the best linemen ever to don the Bucks pads."
He entered the Army in March 1943 and was honorably discharged in January 1946. While serving in the Pacific Theater of World War II, he was wounded in May of 1945. For his heroism during that conflict he earned a Purple Heart and was awarded a Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Bronze Star. Fully recovered and back in the Midwest, he went on to college in Omaha at Creighton, playing college football and after his second year, was recruited to play semi-pro football on the East Coast where he complete 5-6 seasons. A knee injury ended his football career and being on the East Coast, he settled in New Jersey where he had a long career with Ford Motor Company. He and Jean retired in the 80's to a retirement community, Crestwood Village, in Whiting, NJ. He never lost his love for cards, nurtured by those poker games in the Army; he took up bridge and spent many happy hours with the neighborhood bridge club. He and Jean traveled extensively, touring the various national parks and sites of interest in the US and Canada, always taking time to visit with his family and friends in Yankton. He returned to Yankton last summer to be closer to his family.
He is survived by his brother-in-law, Earl Morman, Yankton, SD; nieces, Barbara (Robert Clarke) Quincy MA, Linda (J. Keith Wing) Great Falls MT, Don (Mary) Morman Missoula MT, David (Shirley) Morman Omaha NE; and a wide network of Flevares, Haas, and Welchert cousins and families.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 45 years, Jean; two sisters, Sr. Inez Welchert and Verena Morman.
Memorials may be directed to the Verena Morman Scholarship Fund at Mount Marty College, Yankton SD.

Adaleen Meyer

Adaleen Myrtle Meyer, 81, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at a Rapid City hospital after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg with the Rev. Richard Baumberger officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Wight and Fox Funeral Chapel in Watertown and will continue at 6 p.m. with a Scripture service at 8 p.m. in the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Visitation will also be Friday at the church prior to the services. A memorial has been established.
Adaleen Meyer was born July 15, 1918, at Milbank, to Garfield and Grace (Amsden) Hennings. She married Mathew Lenards Nov. 18, 1935, and the couple had six children.
Survivors include her husband Clayton Meyer of Rapid City; three daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and Bob Fodness of Rapid City, Carol and Neil Athow of Spearfish and Brenda and Rich Lien of Loveland, Colo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Lucy Lenards of Hastings, Minn., and Victor and Kathy Lenards of Waurika, Okla.; a sister, Alys Maier of Spokane, Wash.; a brother-in-law, William and Elizabeth Lenards; a sister-in-law, Phyllis and John Hood of Mena, Ark.; four stepchildren, Arlys Barrow, Marlene Hansen and Norris and Rodney Meyer; 21 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren.
