Vernie M. Ford

Donald M. Lammers, age 89 of Hartington, NE, died on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Hartington.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, February 23, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance with the Rev. David Korth and Rev. David Fulton officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in Constance. Visitation will be on Sunday from 1-5:00 p.m. with a rosary at 2:00 p.m. at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska. A vigil service will be on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the church in Constance. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Tim Becker, Rob Sylliaasen, Troy Lammers, John Carter, Kyle Lammers, Garrett Lammers, Derek Lammers.
Donald Michael Lammers was born on February 12, 1920 in Hartington, NE to Adolph and Pauline M. (Schumacher) Lammers. He grew up on a farm west of Hartington and served in the U.S. Army during WW II. He married Marie Gubbels on December 30, 1946 in Hartington. Don and Marie farmed west of Hartington and moved into town in 1992.
Donald was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Constance, the Catholic Order of Foresters, former parish council member and former NFO member, AMPI Member, and the Hartington VFW Post #5283. Don enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Marie of Hartington; 10 children and their spouses, Paula and Neil Becker of Omaha, NE, Connie and Gary Sylliaasen of Irene, SD, Steve and Janet Lammers of Hartington, Ken and Jo Lammers of Fargo, ND, Mary and Bill Carter of Omaha, NE, Ron Lammers of Mesa, Arizona, Terri Lammers of Yankton, SD, Bill and Terri Lammers of Topeka, KS, Ed and Michelle Lammers of Hartington, and Matt and Kendra Lammers of Downington, PA; 25 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother, Virgil Lammers, 1 sister, Wilma Pick.

Marilynn I. Prince

Marilynn I. Prince, age 85, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, February 6, 2009 at Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at First United Methodist Church in Yankton with Reverend Dean Trapp officiating. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories cemetery in Yankton. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Tuesday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service and video tribute at 7:00 PM followed by an American Legion Auxiliary Service. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Pallbearers are Glen Thorp, Marty Guinther, Greg Guinther, Scott Vanta and Wayne Helland. Honorary pallbearers are her 12 grandchildren: Paula Crawford, Jon Hauck, Glen Thorp, Jennifer Hauck, Jeremiah Prince, Stephanie Crow, Sarah, Kathryn and Rebeccah Prince, Alex Estes, and Tabbetha and Leslie Cruse.
Marilynn was born on June 5, 1923 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harvey and Mabel (Dennis) Poling. She grew up in Sioux City and attended Crescent Park Grade School and North Jr. High School. She graduated from Central High School in 1941. On July 10, 1943, Marilynn married John V. Prince in Sioux City. After their marriage, they lived in Ft. Smith, Arkansas where John was stationed before going to Germany during World War II. In 1947, they moved to Yankton and became members of the First United Methodist Church. Marilynn was very active in the church and in the community. She was a Past President of the United Methodist Women and a member of the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir. She was involved with 2 quilting circles, where they would take blankets to all newborns from the church. Marilynn volunteered many hours at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital making hundreds of baby caps for all the newborns. She was also a member of the Avera Sacred Heart Auxiliary. She was a Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as the Chaplain since 1993. Marilynn sold poppies every year and was the local chairperson for the Girls State Program. She recently received her 60 year pin from the Legion Auxiliary. Marilynn was the first president of the Band Booster Club, a member of the Order of Eastern Star - Keystone Chapter No. 33, and a member of the Harmony Notes. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and Geranium Sales for Diabetes. In recent years, she made blankets for all of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Service to others was truly an important part of Marilynn's life.
Marilynn is survived by five children: Barbara "Bobbie" (Dale) Hauck of Newberg, OR, Pamela Prince of Des Moines, IA, Kent (Kathy) Prince of Cumming, GA, John Douglas Prince and friend, Jill Anderson of Waconia, MN and Daniel (Jaylynn) Prince of West Milford, NJ; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ardyce Guinther of Indianapolis, IN; and many nieces and nephews.
Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John Prince on May 9, 2002; 2 sisters, Lorna Jeanne Poling and Kathleen Dixon; and 2 brothers, Harvey and Arthur Jack Poling.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in care of the Chancel Choir Fund, the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Auxiliary, the El Riad Shriners Auxiliary or the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Lucy Haskell

CONDE — Lucy May Haskell, 92, Conde, mother of Marilyn Rahn of Watertown, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2000, at a Groton healthcare center.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the United Methodist Church in Conde with the Rev. Richard Collman officiating.
Burial will follow in the Conde City cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Haskell’s grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Curtis, David and Linda Haskell and Elizabeth, Jeffrey and Richard Rahn.
Visitation will be today (Wednesday) from 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel in Groton. Visitation will also be Thursday at the church prior to the services. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Conde United Methodist Church.
Lucy Haskell was born to Charles and Christine (Hanson) Stoddard in Conde Dec. 27, 1907. She married Albert Haskell June 17, 1929, in Aberdeen.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Donald Rahn of Watertown; a son and daughter-in-law, Darrel and Joyce of Conde; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Wagner

Evelyn Wagner, 100, of Redfield, passed away on August 22, 2015, at the Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield, SD. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, August 26, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Congregational UCC Church in Redfield. Reverend Tim Fugman will officiate. There will be a memorial prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night at the Eastern Star Home Chapel in Redfield.
Evelyn was born January 3, 1915 to August and Martha Roeber on the family farm west of Tulare, SD. Laughter, music, reading, sports and hard work were an important part of her childhood that she took into adulthood. Together with her 6 brothers and sisters they attended country school and then on to high school in Tulare, SD. Evelyn then attended Northern Teachers College (NSU) in Aberdeen, SD.
She married Willis C. Wagner on June 25th, 1943 at St. John’s Church near Tulare, SD. A son, Thomas Willis joined the family on September 4th, 1945. After WWll they farmed near Cottonwood Lake and then near Athol, SD. Later, Willis moved his family to Faulkton, SD and this is where Marianne Evelyn was born on December 23, 1958. After a few years in Faulkton they again moved, this time to Redfield, SD. Throughout this time Evelyn began a long career of teaching piano and playing the organ and piano for many events including church. There are very few people in Faulkton & Spink County that have not heard Evelyn play.
Children where a very important part of Evelyn’s life! She had a way of communicating with everyone, especially children. They loved to giggle and play games with her. There was never a dull moment when Evelyn was around.
Evelyn could always rise to any occasion-her quick wit and smile carried her through good and bad times.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Willis, three brothers and three sisters and a son, Gregory.
She is survived by a son Thomas Willis (Beverly), a daughter Marianne (Mark) Baumberger, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren all of Montana.
Evelyn had the opportunity to live for 100 years during some of the best times yet in our country.

Lyle W. Hladky

Lyle W. Hladky, age 68, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at his residence.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with Pastor Charlie Graves officiating. Burial will be in the Nikodym cemetery in rural Utica, South Dakota. Visitation is from 3:00 to 8:00 PM, on Monday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home with a prayer service and video tribute at 7:00 PM. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral service.
Pallbearers are Harold Braunesreither, Mike Grimme, Todd Kautz, Warren Peterson, Larry Pokorny and Earl Stahlecker.
Lyle was born on September 12, 1938 in Yankton, South Dakota to Louis and Emily (Pokorny) Hladky. He attended area schools and graduated in 1956 from Yankton High School. He later attended Yankton College. On November 12, 1960, he married Sharon Root. To this union one son was born. Lyle worked at the Human Services Center and Sunshine Food Store in Yankton. He then became a licensed nursing home administrator and worked at various facilities in South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa. On November 20, 1974, he married Mary (Hansen) Pederson and to this union three children were born. In 1993, Lyle started Lyle's Custom Cleaning. He managed and worked at this business until 2001 when he retired.
Throughout his life, Lyle loved to read and to gain knowledge. He worked the crossword puzzle daily and could correctly answer almost any trivia question he was asked. He enjoyed bowling and model railroads in his younger years. Later, he enjoyed playing pinochle and camping with his family at Lake Yankton. His favorite past time of all was sitting in his kitchen enjoying a cup of coffee with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Hladky of Yankton; three sons, David (Sharon) Hladky, Richard (Jennifer) Hladky and Adam (Anita) Hladky, all of Yankton; daughter, Emily Hladky of Yankton; a step daughter he raised as his own, Jennifer (Darrel) Johnson of Yankton; and the friend he called his "other son", Steve Grimme of Yankton; three brothers, Lawrence (Barbara) Hladky of Yankton, Donald (Betty) Hladky of Yankton and Robert (Christa) Hladky of Colome, South Dakota; the sunshine in his life, his grandchildren, Andrew Johnson, Seth Cressy, Ethan Hladky, Emma Hladky and Kenzie Hladky, all of Yankton; and many other relatives and friends.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents.

Duane Hoffman

Duane W. Hoffman, age 80, of Watertown, SD, passed away Thursday, August 20, 2015 in his home of pancreatic cancer. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday August 24, 2015 at the First United Methodist church in Watertown with Pastor Sara Nelson officiating. Music will be furnished by Clark Lundstrom as soloist and Blair Titze as organist.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m., with a prayer service at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel in Watertown.
Interment will be in the Grace cemetery, Rockham, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by local U.S. Navy Reserve Members, John J. Tomson Post 57 of the American Legion of Rockham and Clay Kiser Post 92 of the American Legion of Redfield, SD.
Pallbearers will be Lee Syring, Merlin Jeitz, Cliff Herzog, Wayne Shultz, Carrol Moe and Jim Stoudt.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Merlin Wookey, Claire Konold, Ron Shimitz and the 9:30 Wheel Inn coffee group.
Duane William Hoffman was born to William F. and Elsie (Buss) Hoffman, on August 3, 1935, in Redfield, South Dakota. He attended Seivers School in Hillsdale Township, Faulk County. He graduated from Redfield High School in 1953 and attended Northern State Teachers College from 1953 to 1955, majoring in engineering. Duane entered the Navy flight training program in November of 1955 and received his commission and aviator wings in August of 1957. He made cruises to the far east on the U.S.S. Hornet and U.S.S. Bennington and served as a replacement Airgroup instructor at NAS (Naval Air Station) North Island, Coronado, California. He was honorably discharged in 1961 as a Lieutenant. After his active duty, he served for two and a half years in the reserves, in Minneapolis, MN.
Duane served on the Hand County Board of Education for six years, Redfield School Board for 13 years (7 as chairman), township supervisor of Park Township for 27 years, and many other committee jobs of the Rockham Methodist Church.
He married Ceylon D. Nultemeier on August 17, 1963 at the First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, South Dakota. They farmed near the family farm, raising cattle, hogs and grain, until they retired in 1997. They then moved to Watertown, where they built a home on Lake Kampeska and enjoyed making many new friends. Ceylon passed away on August 11, 2002.
Duane married Sandra Thompson Waba on January 2, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Watertown. They enjoyed traveling to different places, going on cruises, wintering in warm weather, dancing, and golf. They were able to cross off many of their “bucket list” items.
Duane loved his family and grandchildren, traveling, golfing, fishing, ballroom dancing, and the Wheel Inn gang.
He was a member of the Watertown United Methodist Church, where he sang in the church choir and served on a number of committees, including the finance committee and the Church Foundation Board. He was also a member of the Watertown Rotary Club, Rockham American Legion, Prairie Winds Golf Club, Watertown VFW, and Watertown Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1054.
Duane is survived by his wife, Sandy; one son, William (Marta) Hoffman; a daughter, Pamela Hoffman Degelau; two stepsons, James (Lori) Waba, Jr. and Timothy (Carol) Waba; his four grandchildren, Alexandra Hoffman, Carli Hoffman, Zachary Degelau and Alec Degelau; four step-grandchildren, Jessica (Sean) Lessin, Ashley (Nate) Blom, Justin (Jessica) Waba, Zach (Justine) Waba; six step-great grandchildren, Hunter and Jackson Blom, Luka and Anaka Lessin, Dawson Waba and Jameson Waba; one brother, Willard Hoffman; a sister-in-law, Verna; five nieces and one nephew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Ceylon, an infant daughter, an infant grandson, one brother, Robert, and a sister-in-law, Elaine.

Francis Eugene Hansen

Death date: April 20, 2008

Francis Eugene Hansen, 81, of Vermillion died Sunday, April 20, 2008 at his residence.
Francis was born January 17, 1927, at Gettysburg, SD, to Joy and Fanny (Harvey) Hansen. He attended school until 9th grade at Bloomingdale rural school near Vermillion. He served in the army in the Korean War from 1950 - 1952. He was a farmer.
He married Leta Hall on January 17, 1964, in Wakonda, SD. He lived in Vermillion/Hub City area for 64 years.
He was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., Alsen Legion, Clay Country Ramblers, charter member, SESD Pheasant Association. He was a member of Wakonda United Methodist Church.
Francis is survived by his wife, Leta of Vermillion; son and daughter-in-law, Brad (Jeanie) of Vermillion; three grandchildren; Sarah Hansen, Brian Hansen, and Brett Hansen; sister, Geraldine (Bob) Clark of Vermillion; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at United Methodist Church in Wakonda with Pastor Andy Bartel officiating. Burial will be in the Bluff View cemetery with military graveside service conducted by Vermillion V.F.W. Clay Post #3061.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m., prayer service at Iverson-Siecke-Kober Funeral Home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joy and Fanny Hansen, and a brother, Verle Hansen.

Shirley I. Brekke
(October 7, 1926 - July 28, 2012)

Shirley I. Brekke, 85, of Dell Rapids formerly of Renner died Saturday, July 28, 2012 at the Dells Area Health Center.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM Saturday, August 4, 2012 at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Shirley was born October 7, 1926 in Sioux Falls to parents Halvor and Alma (Nustad) Brekke. She grew up in the Renner area. She graduated from Washington High School. After graduation she went to visit her sister, Muriel in New York and spent the next 50 years there. While in New York she worked as the executive secretary for Special Metals Company in Utica, New York. She returned to South Dakota in 2000. She has been a resident of the Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids.
Shirley loved spending time at the ocean and her Norwegian heritage.
Grateful for having shared her life are her sister, Marvel (Herman) Brende, Sioux Falls; nieces and nephews, Vance Valerio, Stuart Brende, Amber McKenney, April Endahl, Toni Valerio and Ryne Brende.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two infant sisters, a sister, Muriel Valerio and a brother in law, Tony Valerio.

Vincent Fitzgerald

RAPID CITY | Vincent Thomas Fitzgerald, 88, died Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at the Fort Meade Medical Center. He was born April 23, 1927, in Aberdeen, the son of Thomas and Carrie (Brueske) Fitzgerald.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in April 1944, during World War II. He operated a Landing Ship Vehicle Personnel (LSVP) which carried 36 troops and three crewmen during the invasion of Iwo Jima. While in the Navy he became a Plank owner (which designates one who was aboard a ship when it was commissioned and de-commissioned), and a Shellback (designates one who has crossed the equator, which he did several times). He was on the ship U.S.S. Ozark when the war ended in 1945.
Following his discharge from the Navy he attended college in Texas and returned to Redfield. He joined the South Dakota National Guard in 1955.
He married Marianne Eldredge in 1957.
He was a full time technician with the National Guard in Redfield, Belle Fourche and Rapid City. He retired as a technician and from the National Guard in 1989.
During his 38 years of military service he progressed from the rank of Petty Officer Second Class in the Navy to Chief Warrant Officer 4 in the Army National Guard, earning the following awards: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 stars, Navy Presidential Unit Citation with 1 star, Navy Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Good Conduct Medal, Navy Occupation Medal (Japan), World War II Victory Medal, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 2 stars, Philippine Republic Presidential Unit Citation, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (3rd award), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (3rd award), Army Commendation Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Meritorious Service Ribbon, and the Legion of Merit.
He was a Life Member of the VFW, National Guard Association of the United States and the South Dakota National Guard Officers Association. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the 196th Regimental Combat Team Association, American Association of Retired Persons, the Military Officers Association of America, and was President of the Rapid City Yacht Club.
Survivors include his wife, Marianne Fitzgerald of Rapid City; five children, Mike and Jonna Fitzgerald of Denver, Barry Fitzgerald of Whitefish, MT, Vicki and Craig Sorenson of Deaver, WY, Jamie and Bonnie Fitzgerald of Rapid City, and Sheri and Hank Sponder of Rapid City; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Fort Meade for the compassionate care that was provided.
Graveside services will be at noon Monday, Aug. 31, at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis, with full military honors provided by the South Dakota National Guard Honor Guard and Sturgis VFW Honor Guard.
