Dale Michael Bergin
(December 16, 1940 - December 14, 2012)

Dale M. Bergin, 71, of Garretson, South Dakota, died on Friday, December 14, 2012, at Palisade Manor in Garretson. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson. Visitation will begin at 5:00 P.M. Monday, with a Wake Service at 7:00 P.M. all at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Dale was born on December 16, 1940, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Russell and Mildred (Karli) Bergin. He grew up in the Sherman area and graduated from Garretson High School in 1958. He held various occupations throughout his life which included working at John Morrell, Sioux Valley Hospital, Palisade Manor, and Christensen Farms. Dale had a great sense of humor and enjoyed drinking coffee with his morning coffee group at Palisade Oil. He would also spend countless hours taking care of his lawn and flowers. He loved watching old movies on TV, and going to Sioux Falls to find a dinner of liver & onions, or sautéed shrimp. Dale was a lifelong member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, in Garretson, where he was an usher and took care of the church building.
Grateful for having shared his life are his sister, Sharon (Marvin) Hawes of Luverne, MN; nieces: Connie Hawes and Amy (Chris) Otto; nephew, Curt (Chona) Hawes; great-nieces & nephew: Casey Hawes, Carrie Hawes, and Abigail Otto. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Virginia Ruth Berdahl
(July 31, 1930 - December 17, 2012)

Virginia Ruth (Kneip) Berdahl of Colton, then Brookings, died peacefully at age 82 among family on Monday, December 17, 2012 at Sanford USD Medical Center under hospice care.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Friday, December 21, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Colton, with burial at St. Ansgar cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-6:00 PM Thursday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Colton.
Virginia was born on July 31, 1930 to Irvin and Ruth (Carlson) Kneip. After growing up in Oak Park and Villa Park (Chicago suburbs) and graduating from York Community High School in Elmhurst, Illinois, Virginia mowed with her parents and brother to Colton in 1948, enrolling at Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
Virginia married Juel Berdahl on September 16, 1950. They raised their six children on the farm, and in addition, were foster parents to 114 children through Lutheran Social Services.
Virginia was very active in her church, including involvement and leadership in quilting and ladies aid. She had been a substitute organist, taught piano lessons, and was a 4-H leader for 25 years.
She is survived by her children, Priscilla (David) Storm of Brookings, Becky Berdahl of Minneapolis, Dan (Karen) Berdahl of Sioux Falls; Tim (Laura) Berdahl of Duluth, MN, Mark (Laura) Berdahl of Northfield, MN, and Phil (Julie) Berdahl of Forest, VA. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Brian Storm, Rachel Storm, Kevin Strom, Josh Berdahl, Miranda Berdahl, Sanna Berdahl, Karin Berdahl, Mara Berdahl, Greta Berdahl, Leif Berdahl, and Brittany Secory; 6 great grandchildren, Isaac, Brooklyn, Bricyn, Luke, Elijah, and Aidan; a brother, Don (Gwen) Kneip, Jasper and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Juel on November 22, 2012.
Memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church of Colton, Lutheran Social Services, or Luther Seminary.

Constance "Connie" Nustad
(October 22, 1918 - December 1, 2012)

Constance Nustad, 94, of Sioux Falls formerly of Renner died Saturday, December 1, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Luther Manor.
Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Renner Lutheran Church, Renner. Burial will be in the West Nidaros Lutheran cemetery, rural Crooks. Visitation will begin one hour before the service at the church.
Constance “Connie” was born October 22, 1918 on the family farm near Renner to parents Thomas and Clara (Peterson) Nustad. She attended country school near Renner. She lived on the farm until moving into Sioux Falls.
Constance was a lifelong member of Renner Lutheran Church, where she was baptized and confirmed.
Connie was an avid Minnesota Twins Fan.
She is survived by several cousins and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother in law, Othella and Lyle Christensen.

Eleanor Wandell

Eleanor Wandell, 97, of Gresham, OR, died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Village Healthcare in Gresham. Her funeral will be Monday, October 3, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at United Methodist Church in Redfield. Reverend Stephen Perry will officiate. Burial will be in Greenlawn cemetery in Redfield. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-7:00 p.m. at Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield. www.thelenfuneralhome.com
Eleanor was born August 20, 1914 in Redfield, SD to William and Lydia (Engel) Schuermeyer. She attended Redfield Public School and graduated from Redfield High School in 1932 and then attended Aberdeen Business School. Eleanor married Albert G. Holman on May 4, 1936 in Arlington, SD. They lived in Redfield and she worked at Cass Clay Dairy and South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield. Her husband Albert died in 1962. She later married Glenn Wandell on October 24, 1965 in Redfield. She lived in Redfield until 2001 to be closer to her son and his family.
She was a member of United Methodist Church.
Eleanor enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting and flower gardening.
Eleanor is survived by her son Robert (Karen) Holman of Gresham, OR; daughter-in-law Kay Holman of Sioux Falls, SD, five grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son Gary and two half sisters.

Elwin Hodne
(November 10, 1921 - December 6, 2012)

Elwin N. Hodne, 91, of Brandon formerly of Sioux Falls died Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 AM Monday, December 10, 2012 at East Side Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls. Burial with Military Honors will at the Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Sioux Falls. Visitation with the family present will be from 1-4:00 PM Sunday at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Baltic.
Elwin was born November 10, 1921 on a farm near Valley Springs to parents Ole and Selma (Nelson) Hodne. He graduated from Garretson High School in 1939. After his education, he joined the United States Army in the fall of 1942 and served in Africa, Italy, Anzio, and Germany during World War II. He received the Purple Heart during his service.
He married Evelyn Jordahl March 21, 1947 at Luverne, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in Sioux Falls and Elwin worked as an engineer for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 36 years, retiring in 1984. Evelyn died in 1997.
Grateful for having shared his life are his children, Terry Hodne, Brandon, Pam Nesheim and her husband Dale, Baltic; Karen Doherty, Sioux Falls; three grandchildren, Kimberly Hodne, Kyla (Matt) Copeland, and Eric Nesheim; three great grandchildren, Brandon, Justice and Kali; and a sister, Inez Eastman, Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, brother, Clifford, sisters, Bernice and Geneva.

Glenn E. Pickering

Glenn Pickering, age 93, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at his home in Mission, Texas.
Funeral services are 10:30 AM, on Monday, January 19, 2009 at United Church of Christ (Congregational) in Yankton with Reverend Paul Opsahl officiating. Burial will be in the Yankton cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Sunday, at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Visitation resumes one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Pallbearers are Ken Pickering Jr., James Pickering, Eric Schulz, Aaron Schulz, Daniel Schulz, Aaron Wherry, Kevin Huber and Corey Highland. Honorary pallbearers are Jean Olson, Mitch Olson, Brandii Wherry, Neil Huber, Jon Huber, Tami Westcrock, Jill Aaker, Terri Young, Derrick Young, Chad Young, Angie DeThury and Katie Huber.
Glenn was born on June 13, 1915 in Laurel, Nebraska to Obie and Alice (Edmisten) Pickering. The family moved to South Dakota in March of 1928 and Glenn attended the 6th, 7th and 8th grade at Grove School. On January 2, 1936, he married Elva Cook in Yankton and they had three children: Kenneth, Gary and Carol. Glenn farmed north of Yankton and was very proud of his cattle and how they were raised. While farming, he also worked at Anderson Livestock for over 40 years. Then he worked for Wilson Seed as a salesman into his late 80s and was awarded Outstanding Salesman of the Year in 1985. Elva died on March 28, 1980 and Glenn married Gladys Nelson on September 4, 1981. They were married for nearly 12 years until Gladys's death on May 25, 1993. Then on February 13, 1995, Glenn married Violet Huber. They had many good years together and enjoyed wintering in Mission, Texas. Glenn was a member of the Yankton Elks Lodge and was Elk of the Year in 1989. He was also a member of the Yankton Moose Lodge and a member of the School Board for Pershing School District. Glenn loved to go dancing and would travel hundreds of miles to a dance. He also enjoyed traveling and fishing.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Violet Pickering of Yankton; 3 children: Kenneth (Lavonne) Pickering of Pierre, SD, Gary (Judi) Pickering of Wapello, IA and Carol (Doug) Schulz of Lincoln, NE; 7 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 4 step-children: Stuart Huber and special friend, Margarita Tonjes of Irene, Dianna (Steve) Hampton of Colorado Springs, CO, Donna (Don) Young of Sioux Falls and Bruce Huber of Irene; 11 step-grandchildren; 18 step-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Glenn was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Elva; second wife, Gladys; 3 sisters: Beulah Pickering, Flossie Wurdinger and Evelyn Pickering-Canfield; and one brother, William "Bill" Pickering.

Claude Sudbeck

Claude J. Sudbeck, age 68, of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Thursday, November 6, 2008 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, SD. after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, November 10, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. Jeffery Loseke officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington with military honors provided by the Hartington VFW Post 5283. Visitation will be on Sunday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm with a rosary at 4:30 pm and a vigil service at 7:00 pm at the church under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska.
Pallbearers will be Matt Sudbeck, Roger Sudbeck, Darrell Uhing, Melvin Sudbeck, Tom Sedlacek Jr., Jerad Haberman, Jim Kostel, and Shannon Herrboldt. Honorary pallbearers will be the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.
Claude was born on March 27, 1940 at Bow Valley to Arthur and Rose (Burbach) Sudbeck. He grew up in the Bow Valley area and graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1958. He graduated from Aeronautics School in Kansas City in 1960. He served in the U. S. Army from 1963 to 1965, stationed in Germany. Claude married Karen Haberman on April 24, 1965 in Menominee, NE. He received his real estate license in 1967 and was an active real estate broker until his death. Claude and Karen also owned and operated the Hillcrest Motel since 1985 with locations in Plainview and Hartington.
Claude was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, and the Hartington Chamber of Commerce. He was a very kind, generous and loving man. He accepted his illness with dignity. His family was the center of his life.
Claude is survived by his wife, Karen, of Hartington, 3 daughters and their spouses; Cheryl and Rick Pesek of Omaha, Jodi and Tim Potts of Omaha, Kari and Rick Pruett of Sioux City, Iowa, 8 grandchildren; Ricky, Olivia, and Nathan Pesek, Jacob, Caden, and Morgan Potts, Elen and Reid Pruett, 3 sisters; Dolores Ann and Merlin Hochstein of Wynot, Mary Jean and Jerry Uhing of Omaha, Sharon and Jerry Schmidt of Ft. Collins, CO, 5 brothers; Don and Gloria Sudbeck of Omaha, Clair and Deanna Sudbeck of Yankton, Lloyd and Janice Sudbeck of Bow Valley, Dave Sudbeck of Hartington, Kevin and Jaci Sudbeck of Hartington, and a sister in law, JeAnn Sudbeck of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Henry Sudbeck.

Dorothy M. Hartung

Dorothy M. Hartung, age 88, of Coleridge, NE, died on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at 10:30 am at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Coleridge with Rev. Andreas Stein officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Ridge cemetery in Coleridge. Visitation will be on Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 pm with a Prayer Service and Video Tribute at 7:00 pm at the Wintz Funeral Home in Coleridge. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Saturday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Monte Hartung, Chris Hartung, Adam Hartung, Spencer Bose, Garth Paulsen, Paul Richard Hines, Zachary Spahr, and Quinn Henderson.
Dorothy was born on August 4, 1920 at Coleridge to W. G. and Mary (Nicholson) Hines. She grew up on a farm north of Coleridge and graduated from the Coleridge High School in 1938. She received her Normal Teaching Certificate from Wayne State Teachers College in Wayne, NE. She taught country school in Dixon and Cedar counties until her marriage to Marvin Hartung. Dorothy married Herbert Bose on May 25, 1940 in Wayne and then married Marvin Hartung on February 16, 1954 at Coleridge. She and Marvin lived in Coleridge until moving to a farm south of Coleridge in 1960. Marvin died on August 26, 1995 at the age of 70. Dorothy continued living on the farm until 2001 when she moved to the Oaks Assisted Living in Wayne. For the last 5 years she has been a resident of the Park View Haven Nursing Home in Coleridge.
Dorothy was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and choir, ELCW, the Coleridge American Legion Auxiliary Post 114, and was a former Girl Scout Leader.
Dorothy is survived by 4 children; Herbert (Sharon) Bose of Laurel, NE, Gregory (Nancy) Bose of Uhrichsville, Ohio, Jeff and Julie Hartung of Dixon, NE, Dawn Hartung of Colorado Springs, CO, 8 grandchildren; Stacy Huizenga, Heather Miller, Sheila Spahr, Spencer Bose, Christopher Hartung, Amanda Laing, Adam Hartung, and Quinn Henderson, 14 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren, 2 sisters; Wilma (Charles) Paulsen of Laurel, and Marion Molden of Sioux City, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Marvin, a son, Brent Hartung, 3 brothers; J.C., Phil, and Paul Hines, and a sister; Janet Hines.

William "Bill" Alan Haagenson
(April 19, 1944 - April 11, 2012)

Bill Haagenson, 67, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Garretson, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at Dougherty House Hospice in Sioux Falls following a courageous nine month battle with ALS. Memorial services will begin at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Palisade Lutheran Church, rural Rock County, Minnesota. Visitation with the family present will be from 5-7:00 P.M. Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson. Memorials may be directed to the ALS Association.
William Alan Haagenson was born April 19, 1944, in Sioux Falls, SD, to Hobert and Erna (Rossman) Haagenson. He was baptized at Norway Lutheran Church and confirmed at Palisades Lutheran Church. He graduated from Beaver Creek High School and attended college at SDSU in Brookings.
Bill married his high school sweetheart, Joan Waagmeester, on August 2, 1963. They lived in Sioux Falls until moving to their acreage near Garretson in 1976.
Bill worked in sales for many years before starting his own commercial roofing company. In addition, Bill spent his life raising registered paint and quarter horses. The horses brought Bill and his family great joy throughout the years. He also enjoyed raising alpacas. Upon his diagnosis, Bill and Joan relocated to Sioux Falls.
Bill was especially proud of his grandchildren and took great pride in attending every activity he could.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife of 48 years Joan, daughters Lynette (Leland) Vlastuin of Lennox, and Erin (Tyler) Hill of Sioux Falls, son Bill (Michele) of Cheyenne, WY, and his grandchildren Jordan, Jared, Melissa, Madysen, Bailey, Nathan and Ben. He is also survived by his sisters Carol Jonason and Cindi (Dave) Biever, both of Sioux Falls, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

Minnietta Millard

Minnietta Millard, 69, began her journey into eternal life on September 9, 2011.
Minnietta was an accomplished stained glass artist, author, and spiritual guide and mentor for many people. Her beautiful stained glass creations are found in churches, homes, colleges and businesses all around the world. In 2006 she wrote a book about her life journey entitled, A CLOSER LOOK: A THEOLOGY OF THE ORDINARY about finding God’s guidance in the ordinary experiences of life.
Minnietta was a loving wife to her husband, Dr. Kent Millard, for 48 years and they were blessed with two wonderful children, Kendall (Katherine) Millard, an attorney at Barnes and Thornburg in Indianapolis and their children, Madison, MacKenzie, Morgan and Marshall; and Koretta (Eddie) Hall, a social worker with at risk children in Indianapolis and their children, Tre’, Jalen, and Taylor..
Minnietta was born October 28, 1941 in Pierre, SDto George and Hazel Green who are both deceased. Bill Green, her brother, and his wife Kay live in Rio Vista, CA and her sister Jeanette Green lives in Vermillion, SD. Minnietta also loved her sisters in law, Sheilah, Judy and Darshan and her 13 nieces and nephews, Lori, Kristi, Scott, Jana, Haley, Shawn, Laurie, Sam, Sahra, Matthew, Lars, Nathan and Jonathan.
Minnietta graduated from Redfield High School in 1959 and received her Bachelor’s degree from Dakota Wesleyan University in 1963 where she was elected Miss Wesleyan, the highest honor given to a graduating Senior. On September 29, 2011 Dakota Wesleyan will give Minnietta and Kent Millard a Distinguished Alumni award. Minnietta received a Master’s degree in Christian Education from Boston University School of Theology in 1966 and served as a Director of Christian Education in local churches for 10 years before becoming a Stained Glass artist for 25 years.
In SD Minnietta served as Chairperson of the United Methodist Conference Committee on the Status and Role of Women, directed Junior High Church Camps, taught confirmation classes and led adult classes and workshops in several states.
Dr. Kent and Minnietta Millard served the Flandreau-Egan United Methodist congregations, Canyon Lake UMC in Rapid City, First UMC in Mitchell, and First UMC in Sioux Falls, before moving to Indianapolis to serve St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in 1993.
In Indianapolis Minnietta served as President of the Board of Directors of the Vivian Smith Teen Parenting Program and Director of a Three Year Covenant Community for Spiritual Formation. She has also been an active supporter of Bethlehem Bible College in Bethlehem and the Mar Elias interfaith school in Israel. Minnietta helped to bring the Beyond Your Best personal training program to Indianapolis and, in her honor, Beyond Your Best established the Minnietta Millard Lifetime Achievement Award given to the person in each training who has made the greatest contribution to the growth of others.
Minnietta was an active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis singing in the Chancel Choir for 18 years, serving on the Spiritual Life Center committee, mentoring confirmation students, going on work projects, and leading adult classes.
In her book A CLOSER WALK Minnietta wrote these words for her epitaph: “She was a person of vision in her career, community and family. She balanced the paradoxes of life in an ongoing trust in God’s word. She created unconditional love, openness, and integrity in her family and world, beauty to touch the souls of those who seek, and a better world through the God of all Creation. She was an alive, caring, committed woman standing for a new world.”
Minnietta Millard’s celebration of life service was at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Indianapolis on Friday, September 16 at 2 pm.
Minnietta requested that everyone wear brightly colored clothes to her memorial service to celebrate the beauty and joy of eternal life.
