Darlene E. LaCroix

Darlene E. LaCroix, age 79, of Yankton, South Dakota, died Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton.
Funeral services are 2:00 PM, on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Crofton United Church of Christ in Crofton, Nebraska with Reverend Les Parmenter officiating. Burial will be in the Crofton City cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton with a video tribute and time of sharing at 7:00 PM. Visitation continues one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Pallbearers are Darlene's grandsons: Scott Pickworth, Shannon Pickworth, LeRoy LaCroix Jr., Rob LaCroix, Richard LaCroix, and Sky Padgett. Honorary pallbearers are her granddaughters: Jennifer Howell, Leah LaCroix, Lindsay Hutchinson, Amanda LaCroix, Dawn Auch, Faith Larson, Stacy Luetkenhaus, and Raquel Konecky.
Darlene was born January 8, 1929 at Center, Nebraska to Fred and Emma (Buskirk) Tweedy. She grew up in Verdel, Nebraska and attended Verdel High School. As she was growing up, Darlene spent a lot of time at Katie and Otto Opkis's farm in Randolph, Nebraska. On August 19, 1946, she married Marvin LaCroix. Throughout their life, Darlene and her family lived in Lindy, Mead and Crofton, Nebraska and have spent the past 16 years living in Yankton, South Dakota. Darlene had an ear for music. She learned how to play the guitar and loved entertaining her grandchildren. She enjoying singing and loved to go dancing. Darlene was always concerned about the needs of others, especially with her children and grandchildren.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Marvin "Bud" LaCroix of Yankton; six children: LeRoy (Betty) LaCroix of Yankton, Larry (Helen) LaCroix of Mead, NE, Linda (James) Malik of Mead, NE, Lonnie (Laurie A.) LaCroix of Yankton, Lois (Craig) Padgett of Omaha, NE and Lyle (Connie) LaCroix of Yankton; 15 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; two sisters: Delores LaCroix of Crofton, NE and Sharon (Lawrence) Kaiser of Ceresco, NE; two brothers, Richard (Norma) Tweedy and Kenneth Tweedy, both of Council Bluffs, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Ricky LaCroix; great granddaughter, Gracelynn Luetkenhaus; two sisters: Etta Lucas and Donna Milliken; and three brothers: Marion, Ben and Harold Tweedy.

Robert Walter Roach

Robert Walter Roach, 90, of St. Paul, Minnesota, formerly of Rockham, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2011 surrounded by his loving family in the Comfort of Home Assisted Living in St. Paul, Minnesota. Robert’s funeral mass will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 24 at St. Ann Catholic Church in Miller with Fr. Chester Murtha officiating. Visitation will be two hours before the funeral at the church. Burial will follow at G.A.R. cemetery in Miller. Friends and family may sign Robert’s online register at www.remboldfuneralhome.com
Robert was born on December 7, 1920, to Walter and Margaret Roach of Rockham. He had one brother Stanley. After graduating from high school, he worked on the family farm.
He married Opal Jean DeGeest on February 21, 1944. They farmed and raised five daughters together south of Rockham. Robert loved farming and felt there was no better way to make a living. Robert and Opal enjoyed 67 years together.
Over the years, they hosted many pheasant hunters and made many lifelong friends. Pheasant hunting was one of the highlights of Robert’s life. He was an avid member of the Wall Lake Hunting Club.
After they retired from the farm they moved to Miller and enjoyed many adventurous trips with special friends. Robert was a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Grateful for sharing his life are his wife, Opal of St. Paul, MN; five daughters, Connie (Bob) Haigh of Miller, Cheryle (Steve) O’Connell of Beloit, WI, Bobbie Sargent of New Richmond, WI, Debbie (Mike) Doyle of St. Paul, Susan Carlsten of St. Paul; 12 grandchildren, Tonya Haigh Little, Terri Haigh Nelson, Mandy O’Connell, Brendan O’Connell, Chad Sargent, Troy Sargent, Michelle Doyle Helling, Carrie Doyle, Danielle Doyle Broxey, Jake Carlsten, Jesse Carlsten, Molly Carlsten; 10 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Montana (Lena) Whitmer

Montana (Lena) Whitmer, 89, formerly of Bloomfield, MT, died April 3, 2006 at the home of her daughter, Lura LeFevre in Kent, WA.

Darlene Bryant

DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. — Darlene C. Bryant, 74, Desert Hot Springs, formerly of the Lake Norden, S.D., area, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Palm Springs.
Funeral services were today (Feb. 16) in the Ramon Chapel of the Palm Springs Mortuary at Cathedral City.
Burial was in the Green Acres Memorial Park in Bloomington.
The Palm Springs Mortuary of Cathedral City was in charge of the arrangements.
Darlene Bryant was born June 13, 1925, at Lake Norden to Dewey E. and Alice A. (Gustafson) Winjum at Watertown, S.D.
She married Earl G. Bryant Nov. 10, 1949, at Watertown.
Survivors include a daughter, Deborah Brithinee of Grand Terrance; two sons, David of Fontana and Douglas of Corona; and six sisters, LaVonne Wolcott and Mary Langendorfer of Watertown, Gloria Abraham of Sioux Falls, S.D., Marlys Tornow of Cheyenne, Wyo., Joyce Wright of Reseda and Doreen Spencer of Engelwood, Colo.

Rita Renae Hobart

Rita Renae Hobart, 58, Rapid City, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, September 18, 2011.
She was born May 28, 1953 in Aberdeen, SD to Richard and Julie (Jessen) Rice. As a young girl she lived with her family on a farm near Rockham, SD. Later she moved to Redfield where she attended school. After a few years, she moved to Mitchell with her family where she continued school and graduated high school.
While in High School, she played the flute and enjoyed glee club, choir, and pep club. After graduating, she attended South Dakota State University in Brookings for one year. During college, she studied abroad in Germany for a period of time; she said this was one of the most memorable times of her life.
On October 6, 1973, she married Steven Michael Hobart in Rapid City. They lived on a ranch near Deerfield where she enjoyed hunting, gardening, and playing with her children. While raising their five children, she attended Black Hills State University and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Elementary Education and Special Education. She has taught as a special education teacher at New Underwood School and most recently at Central High School.
She was a loving mother, grandmother, wife, daughter, and sister who loved the Black Hills.
She loved music, worship, and prayer; devoting herself to God, family, and friends. She was also an active member of the Dove Christian Center for over 10 years.
Survivors include three sons, Scott Hobart, Washington, Ill., Nick Hobart, Hill City, and Mike Hobart, Custer; two daughters, Tiffany Johnson, Tokyo, Japan, and Michele Sabino, Aurora, Ill.; her father, Richard Rice, Wessington Springs; her mother, Julie Rice, Oakdale, Minn.; two brothers, Russell Rice, Rapid City, and Rodney Rice, Custer; a sister, Rochelle Rasmussen, St. Paul, Minn.; and seven grandchildren.
Services were from 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Dove Christian Center, with the Rev. Tim Stuen officiating. Burial was at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hill City cemetery.
A memorial has been established.

Ruben Mattis

AVON -- Ruben Mattis, 79, of Avon, died Friday (April 1, 2005) at St. Michael's Hospital, Tyndall.

Cheryl L. Barnes
(October 9, 1957 - April 17, 2012)

Cheryl Barnes, age 54, of Garretson, formerly of Sioux Falls, died on Tuesday, April 17, 2012, at Dougherty House Hospice in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson with visitation beginning one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at approximately 2:00 P.M. at the Calvary cemetery, Mitchell. Memorials may be directed to Make-A-Wish Foundation and the New Animal Adoption Center.
Cheryl Lynn was born on October 9, 1957, at Mitchell, South Dakota, to James and Nealene (Rogan) Barnes. She attended Notre Dame Academy and graduated from Mitchell High School in 1975. She spent 23 years working in the banking industry with various banks including, Mitchell National, First National Bank in Sioux Falls, and First Premier Bank in Sioux Falls.
Cheryl traveled extensively with her mother and especially enjoyed the American Southwest. She was thankful for truly great friends and family, her cats, good books, Red Lobster, and traveling.
Grateful for having shared her life are her aunt, Marlene Mayer of California; cousin, Nancy Wilson of Sioux Falls; and many other friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Fannie Deelstra
(June 18, 1921 - November 20, 2011)

Fannie Deelstra, 90, of Colton passed away Sunday, November 20, 2011.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 pm Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at First Reformed Church in Colton. Burial will be in Colton cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at the church.
Fannie (Reurink) Deelstra was born June 18, 1921 at the family home in Colton, SD to Gerrit and Jennie (Hein) Reurink. She was the oldest of eight children. Fannie was baptized and made profession of faith at First Reformed Church in Colton, of which her father was one of the founders. In her early years Fannie spent much of her time with her younger sisters and caring for children.
Fannie and John Deelstra were married October 2, 1941. They enjoyed forty-nine years together and were blessed with four children: Carol Jean, Daryl Duane, Stanley Gerald and Kathleen Joy. While John was serving his country during WWII, Fannie worked as a housekeeper, bookkeeper and cared for children. Upon John’s return from the service, they moved to a farm near Hartford and eventually purchased and settled on a farm near Franklin, SD where they raised their family and farmed until retirement in 1979.
Fannie was a devoted farm wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a fantastic cook and a meticulous housekeeper. She helped with all of the family chores including tending a large garden and canning a variety of produce. She also enjoyed meeting and making friends with her many Avon clients. While living on the farm and after retirement in Colton, Fannie was always a gracious hostess and a good friend to many. She especially enjoyed baking for people and inviting family and friends over to enjoy her hospitality and good food. Doing handiwork, playing games and visiting friends were among Fannie’s favorite activities. She also found being actively involved in her church rewarding. Fannie taught Sunday school, played the church organ, was a kitchen helper and Bible study leader. She spent her life living what Jesus taught in His word.
God escorted Fannie home on Sunday, November 20, 2011 at the age of 90. In heaven she will be united with her infant son, Daryl Duane, daughter, Kathleen Joy, husband, John as well as a host of relatives and friends
Fannie’s memory will be cherished by her daughter, Carol (Virgil) VanStelton, Sibley, IA; son, Stanley (Elaine) Deelstra, Renner, SD; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother Frank Reurink; three sisters, Dorothy Vander Weerd; Jeanette Farr and Carrie Hanneman; numerous nieces; nephews; relatives and friends.
Fannie was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents; infant son, Daryl; daughter, Kathleen Bramstedt; a brother and two sisters.

Alicia Marie Vale

It is with deepest sadness that the family of Alicia Marie Vale announce the unexpected death of their beloved wife, mother, daughter, and sister, on September 4, 2011, at the age of 35.
Alicia was born on December 2, 1975 in Rochester, Minnesota. She moved to California in 1985 to live with her mother Marcia and step-father Ken Wilson. She attended elementary, junior high and high school in Coalinga schools, graduating from Cambridge High School in 1994 and attended West Hills Community College. She was active in PTO while living in Coalinga.
Alicia worked for Target after moving to Hanford, CA in 2002. In 2006, she and her family moved to Hercules, CA where she continued to work for Target. At the time of her death she worked for Premier Finance, Inc. and Bed, Bath, and Beyond in Concord, CA.
In 1997, Alicia married the “love of her life”, James H. Johnson. Alicia was most proud of her children, and was known for her “special birthdays” and cake decorating.
Alicia was preceded in death by her father, Virgil C. Vale and step-father, Kenneth R. Wilson.
She will be lovingly missed by her husband James and their children Brandon Macleod, Kendra Vale, Tyler and Nathan Johnson; her mother Marcia Mason-Wilson of Coalinga, CA; brother Christopher Vale of Morro Bay, CA; sister Stephanie Wilson of Fresno, CA; step-brother Kenny Wilson of Coalinga, CA; nieces Alyssa and Kailey Wilson of Coalinga, CA; and Phoebe Christie of Fresno, CA; grandmothers Rosalie Mason of Redfield, SD and Maxine Mason of Redfield, SD.
A Memorial Service will be held in Riverdale, CA in November, 2011. Details will be announced at a later date.

James Coburn
(December 23, 1922 - December 3, 2012)

James Coburn, 89, of Garretson, passed peacefully on Monday, Dec 3, 2012, at the home of his eldest son, James M. Coburn in Harrisburg, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 7, 2012, at the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Garretson. Visitation will be from 2-4:00 P.M. Thursday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, and will resume at 6:00 P.M. at the church with a Rosary at 6:30 P.M. and a Wake Service at 7:00 P.M.
James Howard Coburn was born December 23, 1922 in rural Rodman, Iowa to P. M. and Neva (Graham) Coburn. He was the second of five children. They moved to several different residences near the Madison SD area. After graduation from Eastern High School, he met the love of his life, May Rose Meehan. They were married in September 1943 at St Thomas Catholic Church in Madison. They farmed near Madison until 1952 and then James moved his family to Garretson SD and bought John’s Oil Company which then became Palisade’s Oil Co. He worked there into his late 80s and never officially retired.
James was an active member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was a volunteer fireman, member of the Commercial Club, school bus driver, and owner-operator of Jesse James Bowling Lanes. He was an entrepreneur and was always looking for new challenges to pursue. In later years he derived great pleasure from watching his grandchildren and great grand children participate in ATV racing, football, basketball, baseball, and any other sports or extracurricular programs in which they were involved. His leisure time was consumed by family related activities. He also enjoyed his morning sessions at Palisade’s Oil coffee shop in which he and friends solved all the political and pressing social issues of the day.
He will remain in the hearts and minds of his children James (Nancy) Coburn of Harrisburg, Mary (Dr Ed) Clark of Sioux Falls, Rosie (Loren) Petersen of Sioux Falls, and Tom (Julie) Coburn of Garretson, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grand children, and 3 great-great-grandchildren, sisters Margaret Dick of Madison and Jo Bloomquist of Sumner, WA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 66 years May Rose, brother Virgil, sister Margie Gabrielson, grand-daughter Maria Miller, son-in-law Loren Petersen, 6 brothers-in-law, and 2 sisters-in-law.

Marcella Helen Artz

Marcella Helen Artz, 85, formerly of Northville, SD, died on Saturday, September 24, 2011, at Palisade Manor in Garretson.
Memorial services will be held at a later date with Minnehaha Funeral Home, Garretson, handling the arrangements.
Survivors include her children: Robert (Karol) of Ashton, SD, Sharal (Dick) Akin of Garretson, SD, Allen (Paula) of Highland, CA, Kevin of Yankton, SD, David of Wolsey, SD, and Lisa (Blayne) Sandidge of Sturgis, SD.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lambert.
