Dennis L. Kollars

Dennis L. Kollars, 85 of Hartington, Nebraska, died on Wednesday, January 31, 2007 at the Osmond General Hospital in Osmond, NE.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at 1:30 pm at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with Rev. John Pietramale officiating. Burial will be in St. Michael's cemetery in Hartington with military honors provided by the Hartington VFW Post 5283. Visitation will be on Friday from 3:30 to 8:30 pm with a rosary at 4:00 pm and a vigil service and video tribute at 8:00 pm all at the church. Services are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Nebraska.
Pallbearers are Will Mantle, Adam Kollars, Paul Kollars, Jeff Kollars, Steve Kollars, Chris Kolllars, Brett Kollars, Dennis Braun, and Matt Brandl.
Dennis was born on July 2, 1921 at Crofton, NE to Edward L. and Clara (Schaefer) Kollars. He grew up in the Crofton area and graduated from Crofton High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy from Sept. 1941 to Sept. 1945. He married Hilaria Rupiper on June 8, 1943 at Fordyce, NE. The couple farmed in the Hartington area until moving to a farm 6 miles north of Randolph in 1956. They moved to Hartington in 1977 and Dennis then worked for Neu Cheese Co. for several years and then for Prince Hydraulics for 7 years. They have been residents of the Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Randolph since August of 2006.
Dennis was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, was a former lector, and had a perpetual hour of adoration for many years. He was a member of the Hartington VFW Post 5283 and the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of the Cedar County Election Board.
Dennis is survived by his wife Hilaria of Randolph, 9 children and their spouses, Dennis and Sue Kollars of Randolph, Rod and Margaret Kollars of Charleston, SC, Mike Kollars of Fort Worth, Texas, Bill and Becky Kollars of Randolph, NE, Daryl and Kim Kollars of Hadar, NE, Kerry and Dan Braun of Dayton, Ohio, Kevin and Billie Kollars of Lincoln, NE, Kelly and Shannon Kollars of Austin, Texas, Kay and Danny Mantle of Dallas, Texas, 27 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Raleigh and Joyce Kollars of Yankton, and James and Alice Kollars of Palm Springs, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and son in law, Kathy and Rod Brandl, and 2 brothers, Kenneth and David Kollars.

Daniel R. Herschman
8/24/1957 - 5/18/2010

Rockham, SD - Memorial service for Danny Ray Herschman, 52, of Rockham was held May 22, 2010 at Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory.
He died May 18, 2010 at his friend’s, Merle and Connie Kjer’s home near Westport, SD.
Danny Ray was born August 24, 1957 in New Ulm, MN to Robert, Sr. and Janet (McCaslin) Herschman. He attended public school in Redfield, SD and then Stewart’s Hairstyling in Sioux Falls. He was known as “The Woodpecker” painter in Sioux Falls and surrounding states. He then moved to Hollywood, CA where he chauffeured for actress Maria Ford, Playboy centerfold Karen Mayo-Chandler and Jack Nicholson. He formed many musical bands while in Hollywood and Los Angeles, known as “Peter Panic” and “Pussy Willow”. He was a vocalist and lead guitar player.
Danny Ray spent many years with his friends Victor and Pat Rocha at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, CA and with friends, Glenn O’Brian and family at “The Garden of Gods” in Colorado Springs, CO.
He married Jacalyn Beltz (Eric & Lark Beltz) in 1997 in New Ulm, MN, and then moved to Las Vegas, NV. In 2001, his wife died. He then bought the Schult’s Mink Farm in Rockham deeming himself “King of Rockham”.
Danny Ray lived and loved life to the fullest, bringing love, laughter, and had the ability to share that gift with others. He loved music, playing his guitar, singing and dancing. He loved his “Kingdom” in Rockham, his “Queen” of Rockham, Karol A. McAllister, his many friends, fishing, painting, riding his motorcycle, the prairie, all wildlife, sunsets and sunrises, and persistently pursuing his family history.
Survivors include his fiancé, Karol A. McAllister, his step-mother, Evelyn Herschman of Glendale, AZ, two brothers, Robert “Bobby” Herschman, Jr. of Ontario, Canada and Scott Herschman of Glendale, AZ, one aunt, Hazel Peuser of New Ulm, MN and his cousin, Jeffery (Tina) Halverson of Minneapolis, MN.
His parents preceded him in death.
Honorary Urnbearers were Victor and Pat Rocha, Glenn O’Brian, Terry Lewis, Sheila Akin and Mike Guenther.
Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen were entrusted with arrangements.

Richard "Rick" Hinz
4/7/1963 - 6/27/2010

Westport, SD - Funeral service for Richard “Rick” Hinz, 47, of Westport will be 2:00 pm, Friday, July 2, 2010 at Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory, 1708 8th Ave. NE. The Rev. Deb Grismer will officiate.
Fellowship will follow at the Moose Lodge, 410 9th Ave. SW.
Burial will be in Hillview cemetery at Westport.
There will be a prayer service at 8 pm Thursday with visitation from 5-8 pm at the funeral home.
He died Sunday, June 27, 2010 at his home.
Richard “Rick” Hinz, son of Elroy and Carol (Yeske) Hinz was born April 7, 1963 at Aberdeen. He was raised on a farm west of Westport and attended Aberdeen Public Schools. Rick was a jack of all trades; there were very few jobs he couldn’t do. He helped his father on the farm and worked with a custom combine crew.
He was united in marriage to Peggy Nilson in 1994 in First United Methodist Church in Aberdeen. In the early 1990’s, he started Rick’s Drain Tile and was currently operating his business at the time of his death.
Rick drove stock car at Brown County Speedway in the late 1990’s and enjoyed snowmobiling, working on cars and hunting. He liked to farm and spend time with his friends and family, especially his nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his siblings, Cathy Pulatie of Aberdeen, Donnie (Sandy Buechler) Hinz of Aberdeen, Mary Weig of Tea, SD, Janine (Kelly) Rathert of Aberdeen and Tom (Joyce) Hinz of Aberdeen, 13 nieces and nephews, Tasha Head, Brittney Filipiak, Courtney Buechler, Jesse Weig, Jennifer, Zachary and Jordan Rathert and Tyler, Brandon, Carolyn and Chelsea Hinz, all of Aberdeen, Justin Weig of Omaha and Travis Wipf of Tea, four step-children, Jessica, Leslie and Ashlie Nilson, all of Aberdeen and Justin Nilson of Waubay and six step-grandchildren.
His parents and grandparents, Arnold and Evelyn Yeske and Walter and Florence Hinz preceded him in death.
Honorary Casketbearers will be Ron Frankfurth, Rick LaBay, Garlan Nelson and Kelly Rathert.
Casketbearers will be Jesse Weig, Justin Weig, Travis Wipf, Zachary Rathert, Jordan Rathert, Tyler Hinz and Brandon Hinz.
The organist will be Marilyn Gibbs.
Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen have been entrusted with arrangements.

Michael Wayne Franken
(February 2, 1969 - August 28, 2012)

Michael Wayne Franken, 43, passed away on August 28th at Sanford Hospital after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.
Mike was born February 2, 1969 to Wayne and MaryAnn Franken and grew up on a farm north of Crooks. He graduated from Tri-Valley High School, went on to graduate from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA where he received a bachelor’s degree in education. After graduation, he was privileged to teach second grade and coach wrestling and football for West Central School in Hartford for seven years. While teaching, he attended SDSU in Brookings part time where he earned a master’s degree in Education Administration. He used that degree as the education administrator for two years at the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. Mike then went to work for Scheels All Sports for almost 11 years where he found that his passion for education, sports and hunting could be used together to help customers and work beside some wonderful people. He stopped working at Scheels in April of 2011 shortly after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Mike married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Joan (Joani) Schaefer, on August 24, 1991. They made their home in Hartford where they were blessed with two beautiful children; daughter Lauren (14) and son John (12). Mike was an avid sportsmen and hunter and enjoyed hunting with family and many friends. He was a Steeler’s fan and enjoyed getting together with other members of Steeler Nation. Mike was a Christian and shared his faith in Christ with everyone through witnessing, his actions and his love for his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him.
Grateful and blessed for having shared his life are his wife Joan, daughter Lauren and son John all of Hartford, mother MaryAnn and special friend Mark Entenman and his son Travis all of Sioux Falls, brother Matt and his wife MaryAnn and their children Holden, Grant and Kayli of Firth, NE, brother Marty and his wife Jaime of Sioux Falls, grandmother Fannie Swier of Colton, nephew Tyler Schmidt of Madison, and the family dog, a chocolate lab May along with many other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father Wayne, grandfather, John Swier, grandparents Allen and Susan Franken and two trusty black labs Kate and Meg.
Memorials may be directed to the Sanford Cancer Center, where Dr. Keppen, the nurses and staff, showed compassion and through their God given talents and through Christ, helped extend the time Mike had with family and friends. We will be forever grateful.
Funeral service will begin at 10:00 AM Friday, August 31, 2012 at Christ Lutheran Church, Hartford. Visitation will begin at 5:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM on Thursday all at the church. Burial will be in the Pleasant View cemetery, Valley Springs.

Dorothy M. Guthrie-Garza
12/5/1967 - 6/1/2010

Ketchikan, AK - Dorothy “Doe” M. Guthrie-Garza, 42, of Ketchikan, Alaska died June 1, 2010 at a friend’s home in Aberdeen, SD of natural causes.
A funeral service has been scheduled for June 13th and 14th at Saxman Community Hall in Ketchikan.
Burial will be in Bayview cemetery in Ketchikan.
Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen have been entrusted with local arrangements.

Edwin Schauer
11/29/1927 - 6/4/2010

Ashley, ND - Funeral service for Edwin Schauer, 82, of Ashley will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church at Ashley. The Revs. Sharon and Gayler Korsmo will officiate.
Burial will be in Zion Lutheran cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church.
He died Friday, June 4, 2010 at the Ashley Medical Center.
Edwin Alvin Schauer, son of John C. and Rose (Brandner) Schauer was born November 29, 1927 in McPherson County, SD. He attended rural school near Ashley and graduated from Ashley High School with the class of 1945. In 1950, he moved to a farm east of Ashley.
He was united in marriage to Lillian Heinrich on June 24, 1951 in Zion Lutheran Church in Ashley. In 1975, they semi-retired and moved to Ashley where they built a home.
Edwin loved farming, working and spending time with Lillian, traveling south each winter, and driving tractor and combine. He enjoyed collecting farm toys, caps, playing cards, watching television game shows and visiting with family and friends.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include one son, Larry (Fern) Schauer of Ashley, one daughter, Karen (Gary) Hanson of Rochester, MN, one brother, Arthur (Delores) Schauer of Ashley, one sister, Esther Vanourny (Ken) Bellin of Omaha, NE, five grandchildren, Jeremy Schauer of Lincoln, ND, Jenifer (Jamie) Dickerman and John Schauer, both of Wahpeton, Catherine Hanson of Minneapolis and Michael Hanson of Rochester, one great-grandson, Joshua Dickerman of Wahpeton, one step-great-granddaughter, Kaylee Dickerman of Wahpeton and in-laws, Ervin (Ellen) Heinrich, Martha Heinrich, Arlena Heinrich and Viola Heinrich.
His parents, wife, (June 29, 2009), one sister, Elma, in-laws, Richard Vanourny, Jake and Mary Erlenbusch, Richard Heinrich, Alvin Heinrich and Harold Heinrich preceded him in death.
Casketbearers will be Jeremy Schauer, Catherine Hanson, Jenifer Schauer, John Schauer, Michael Hanson, Jamie Dickerman and Tim Deutsch.
The organist will be Karen Himmerich and the soloist is Terry Ulrich.
Carlsen Funeral Home of Ashley has been entrusted with arrangements.

Ginger Dawn Walker
8/24/1948 - 6/24/2010

Aberdeen, SD - Memorial service for Ginger Dawn Walker, 61, of Aberdeen will be 10:00 am, Tuesday, June 29, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1620 Milwaukee Ave. NE. The Rev. Jeff Whillock will officiate.
Fellowship will follow at the VFW, 821 Circle Dr.
She died Thursday, June 24, 2010 at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital in Aberdeen.
Ginger Dawn Walker, daughter of Martin “Ole” and Lucille (Krueger) Sherman was born August 24, 1948 in Aberdeen. Her family lived near Wetonka, SD on a farm/ranch. She attended grade school in Wetonka and graduated from Barnard, SD High School with the class of 1966. She had the honor of representing Barnard as a Barnard Snow Queen.
She was united in marriage to John Walker on March 2, 1966 in Webster, SD. They made their home in the Aberdeen area. She worked at J.C. Penney until 1982. She then became employed with Brown County Emergency Management from 1983-2009. Thru her work with the county, she met so many wonderful people from Emergency Services and volunteers. She knew the Fire Departments, Law Enforcement and EMS people really care for the people of Brown County and she enjoyed working with each Director of Emergency Management.
Ginger enjoyed her pool league, playing softball and reconnecting with high school friends, such as Marion Goodmanson. They shared e-mails, phone calls and memories. Ginger also had a special friend, Dana Pulfrey, whom challenged, frustrated and made her laugh many times. Ginger felt her e-mail buddies kept her going and she says “Thank You”. Ginger was very proud of her children, knowing that they are wonderful parents and human beings. Her sister was her best friend and she cherished the relationship that they had built together.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, VFW Auxiliary, and Heartland CISM (Critical Incident Stress Management) and a past officer of SD Emergency Management Association.
Survivors include her mother, Lucille (Art) Sherman-Rau of Aberdeen, one son, Ross Walker of Aberdeen, one daughter, Wendy (Jeff) VandeBerg of Mitchell, SD, one sister, Susan (John Howard) Anderson of Aberdeen and three grandchildren, Brittany and Lexi VandeBerg and Jessica Walker.
Her father and grandparents preceded her in death.
The organist will be Arliss Alberts, special music by Camille Fischer and Jessica Walker and the ushers are Jesse Luce and Dick Jensen.
Carlsen Funeral Home and Crematory of Aberdeen have been entrusted with arrangements.

Leola "Lee" Berding
(February 15, 1931 - December 11, 2012)

Leola “Lee” Berding, 81, of Chester, SD passed away peacefully Tuesday, December 11, 2012 surrounded by her family from complications of a stroke.
A Time of Remembrance with the family present will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 PM Sunday, December 16, 2012 at Minnehaha Funeral Home in Colton, SD.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, January 5, 2013 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kensett, Iowa.
Lee was born February 15, 1931 at Kensett, Iowa to parents Carl and Hazel (Crippen) Jaspers. She lived her first eighteen years around Kensett. Lee then married Victor Berding and they moved to Sheffield, Iowa where they raised five children.
After all five kids were gone; she boldly went to make her own way in life and was successful and happy. The early 80’s found her living in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, thoroughly enjoying big city living. It was there about twenty years ago that she met her last love, Steve Sater and became his significant other and he her’s.
As Steve kept accepting better job offers, she found herself leaving the city life and never looked back. They moved to rural central Minnesota, North Dakota and finally to the Colton, South Dakota area where they found themselves drawn to living on the shores of Brant Lake. To the both of them this was truly heaven on earth.
Lee had many interests and careers. She owned the 65 Drive Inn Restaurant and Unique Antique Boutique on the Highway 65 Turnpike in Sheffield, Iowa. She loved buying and selling antiques. She also had intermittent careers as a Tupperware salesperson and manager as well as a teacher’s aid and librarian while raising her children and being an exceptional homemaker. Lee also enjoyed playing cards, boating, cooking, home decorating and traveling.
Grateful for having shared her life are her children, Victoria Lee Berding, Lancaster, CA; Brad Berding, Chester, SD; Renee (Rich) Strottman, Waterloo, IA; Hal (Gerilynn) Berding, Clear Lake, IA; and Marla (Jeff) Pulkrabek, Amery, WI; grandchildren, Joel (Amy) Berding; Jennifer (Tyler) Halfpop; Matthew Berding; Jordan Strottman; Jocelyn Berding and Haley Pulkrabek; great-grandchild, Shepherd Halfpop; siblings, IvaDene Pavlik; Lowell “Tub” (Della) Jaspers; Donna Olsen; Carl “Bones” (Luella) Jaspers, Jr.; sister-in-law, Jane Wheeler; special four legged friend, Sami and other relatives and friends.
Lee was preceded in death by her significant other and companion, Steve Sater; parents and brothers, Lee Jaspers; Fred Jaspers and Stanley Jaspers; brother-in-law, Bob Olsen and sister-in-law, Leota Jaspers.
