Donald Mitchell

Donald J. Mitchell died on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at Sioux Valley Vermillion Medical Center.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at the First United Methodist Church in Vermillion.
Donald James Mitchell was born Feb. 8, 1914 at Houghton. He was the oldest child of James Hutcheson and Flossie Agnes (Daker) Mitchell. He attended high school in Hecla. He married Doris Agnes Dolan on June 15, 1940 in Hecla.
While working on his undergraduate degree at The University of South Dakota, Mr. Mitchell worked part-time at the State Chemical Lab from 1939-1941. From 1941 to 1943 he attended school full-time and received his master's degree. He then served in the U.S. Navy and attained the rank of lieutenant commander. He was in the Naval Reserve until 1955.
On his return to Vermillion in 1945 he was hired as an assistant chemist and in 1951 he became South Dakota State Chemist, only the second person ever to hold that position.
During this time he was active in a number of national organizations and served as president of the Association of American Feed and Fertilizer Control Officials, president of the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials, president of the association of Food and Drug Officials of the United States, president of the North Central State Association of Food and Drug Officials, president of the Sioux Valley Section of the American Chemical Society, and president of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists.
In 1975 he received the Harvey W. Wiley Award from the Association of Food and Drug Officials in recognition of his outstanding service and leadership. He retired in 1979 and that same year was awarded an honorary doctorate of science degree from The University of South Dakota.
The governor of South Dakota proclaimed July 2, 1979, as D.J. Mitchell Day for his 28 years of service to the state of South Dakota.
He held life memberships in the Association of American Plant Food Control Officials, the Association of American Feed Control Officials, and the Association of American Pesticide Control Officials.
Mr. Mitchell was also active in his community. He joined the Lions Club in 1951 and served on their Sight committee for many years. He was a member of the Vermillion School Board from 1958 to 1972 and served as president 11 of those years. He and Doris were long-time members of the Vermillion Golf Course and The Bluffs.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Doris; his children and their spouses, Kathleen and Dennis Weisz, David and Jeanette Mitchell, John and Kimberly Mitchell, Michael and Jeanne Mitchell; grandchildren, Mark Weisz and his wife, Amy, Thad Weisz, Melinda Weisz, Ryan Mitchell and his wife, Amy, Cory Mitchell, Brian Mitchell and his wife, Amy, Scott Mitchell and his wife, Becky, Adam Mitchell, Kiel Mitchell, Drew Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Brian Weisz, Thomas Weisz, Rachel Weisz, Jena Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell; two brothers and their wives, Bruce and Lorrayne Mitchell, Robert and Mary Ann Mitchell; and his nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were a sister and her husband, Elmer and Florence Douglas, a brother-in-law, Robert Dolan, and a sister-in-law and her husband, Stanley and Dorothy Sanders.
Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.

Janice Clarstrom

Janice "Jan" Clarstrom, 56, of Clearwater, FL, formerly of Sioux City, IA, died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. April 2, at the Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery in Sioux City, IA.
Arrangements are under the direction of Moss-Feaster Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Belcher Road Chapel in Clearwater.
Ms. Clarstrom came to Clearwater in 1980 from her native Sioux City. She was a registered nurse and of the Lutheran faith.
Survivors include her mother, Alice Clarstrom Orr of Clearwater; a brother, Ronald Clarstrom of Andover, MN, a niece, Ann Damask of Oconomowac, WI; a nephew, Mark Clarstrom of Portage, WI; and two grandnieces.

John Girard

John R. Girard, 54, of Rapid City, formerly of the Wakonda area, died Saturday, May 29, 2004 in Rapid City.
Mr. Girard was born Dec. 14, 1949 in Vermillion, to Francis and Betty (Marcotte) Girard. He attended school in Elk Point, and entered the Army and served in Vietnam from 1969-1972.
Mr. Girard was an avid motorcycle fan and belonged to several clubs, including the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle Club of Rapid City. He owned his own mechanics business, where he spent most of his time doing what he loved, working on cars and motorcycles.
He was preceded in death by his father and two infant brothers.
His survivors include his wife, Julie, and son, Michael, of Rapid City; his mother, Betty Schmidt, and step-father, Virgil Schmidt, of Wakonda; a brother, Joseph, of Wakonda; sisters, Cathi (Leo) Powell of Vermillion, Carla (Tom) Ostrem and Carol (Donnie) Peterson, all of Wakonda, Christine (Jim) Skonhovd of Phoenix, AZ, and Charleen Hansen of Irene; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City. A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 12 at 10 a.m. at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Warren Morse

Warren W. Morse, 83, of Vermillion, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 at the Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.
Mr. Morse was born Oct. 28, 1920 in Vermillion, to Walter and Dorothea (Ferber) Morse. He graduated from University High School in Vermillion in 1939, and joined the Navy. He was assigned to submarine service and spent his tour of duty in the South Pacific.
Mr. Morse married Fern Marcotte on Aug. 21, 1944 in Warrenton, VA, and together they had six children.
The family moved to the Panama Canal Zone in 1951, and Mr. Morse worked for the Panama Canal Company at the Locks, the railroad, the power plant, and retired as Chief Engineer of Motor Vessels in 1977. He owned his own airplane, and was considered an experienced bush pilot in Central and South America. He was an avid traveler, visiting countries all over the world.
Mr. Morse was a past member of the Darien Lodge AF & AM, past patron of Fern Leaf Chapter #4 OES, a member of the Abou Saad Shriners, and York Rite of the Canal Zone. He was also a member of the Juno Chapter #44 OES, and Odd Fellow Lodge #3 of Vermillion. He served as commander of the World War II Submarine Veterans of S.D. for 12 years, and was a member of the VFW Post 3061 in Vermillion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a son.
Survivors include his wife, Fern, of Vermillion; three sons, Richard (Susanna) of El Paso, TX, Douglas (JoAnn) of Grand Bay, AL, Charles of Tacoma, WA, and two daughters, Janelle (Patrick) Kribell of Irene, Adrienne (David) Whitehead of Vermillion, and a daughter-in-law, Rosario Morse of Panama; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, at the First Baptist Church in Vermillion. Burial of ashes was in the Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.

Luke Tiahrt

Luke B. Tiahrt, 16, a student at W.T. Woodson High School, died July 24, 2004 at his home in Fairfax, VA.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 28 at Westlink Christian Church, Wichita, KS. Private family burial was in Driftwood, OK.
Luke was preceded in death by his grandfather, Harley Holland. He is survived by his parents, Todd and Vicki Tiahrt; a sister, Jessica Tiahrt; a brother, John Tiahrt; grandparents, Audene Holland of Pratt, KS, and Wilbur and Marcine Tiahrt of Meckling; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins.
The Luke Tiahrt Memorial Fund has been established to benefit teens. Contributions may be sent to: Luke Tiahrt Memorial Fund, Intrust Bank, c/o Janis Marean, 105 N. Main, Wichita, KS 67202.
Services were by Broadway Mortuary, Wichita, KS.

Maxcene V. Helseth

Maxcene V. Helseth, 79, of Vermillion, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004 at the Sioux Valley Vermillion Hospital.
Maxcene Kendrick was born April 1, 1925 in Loretta, NE, to Chester and Jessie (Worthington) Kendrick. She attended school in Burbank, and married Lloyd Helseth on April 1, 1946 in Elk Point.
Mrs. Helseth worked as a cook most of her life, and was most recently employed at the Mathilda Gephart Child Daycare in Vermillion. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and TLCW in Vermillion, and a past member of the Dakota Hospital Auxiliary.
Mrs. Helseth was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Dennis, four brothers, and a sister.
Her survivors include her husband, Lloyd, of Vermillion; two sons, David (Rosetta) of Brandon, and Greg (Lynn) of Tucson, AZ; and a daughter, Karla (Tim) Tawzer of Brookings.
She is also survived by two sisters, Corrine Beadle of Hudson, and Carrie Morris of Akron, IA, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Visitation began at 5 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the church, with burial in the BluffView cemetery in Vermillion. Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion was in charge of arrangements.

Cleo Kosters

Cleo Jean Kosters, 74, Burbank, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at Sister James Care Center, Yankton.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 28 at United Methodist Church, Vermillion. Burial was in Rock Valley cemetery, Rock Valley, IA.
Visitation was from 3 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27 at Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home. There also was visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. at Pioneer Methodist Church in Rock Valley, IA, with a prayer service at 3 p.m.
Cleo was born Oct. 27, 1930 in Rock Valley, IA, to Alden and Della (Nelson) Eggleston. She graduated from Rock Valley High School in 1948 and attended Westmar College, Le Mars, IA, Northwestern in Orange City, IA, and earned a Ph.D. in library science from The University of South Dakota.
She was an elementary school teacher and was a librarian for Rock Valley schools. She married William Kosters on Feb. 18, 1951 in Rock Valley. He died on April 7, 1977.
She had lived in Vermillion since 1970 and was president of the Vermillion Civic Council. She was a charter member of the Vermillion Red Classic Chicks. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, ESA, and the Clay County Historical Society.
Survivors include her brother, Rollin Eggleston of Glen Carbon, IL; her sister, Christine DiPirro of Orchard Park, NY; nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law, Sara Eggleston, Charlotte, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Nelson.

William F. Morgan

William F. Morgan, 82, Selby, died Han. 19, 2005 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital. Services were held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at the Miller Funeral Chapel, Selby. Burial followed at Selby Memorial Gardens, Selby.
Visitation was held at Miller Funeral Chapel, Selby from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
Mr. Morgan was raised at Wakonda, graduating with the WHS Class of 1940.
After graduation he was with the 147th Medical Unit that was sent to the Pacific. After his Army service he worked as a brakeman and conductor for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad until his retirement.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes of Selby; one son; one daughter; and a sister, Mildred (Ed) Sazama of Sioux Falls.
Miller Funeral Home Bowdle, is in charge of arrangements.

Selma Lawton

Selma Margaret Lawton, 83, of Mankato, MN, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at the Mankato Lutheran Home.
Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 28, at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato, with Rev. Donohue Sarff officiating. Interment and committal services will be in the spring in BluffView cemetery, Vermillion.
Visitation was 4 to 7 p.m, Thursday at Mankato Mortuary, and continued one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Memorials are preferred to the American Lung Association, the National Music Museum at USD, Vermillion, or to the donor's choice.
Selma was born July 7, 1921 to Richard T. and Carrie G. (Skartland) Gravrok in Vermillion. She was a 1939 graduate of Vermillion High School. Selma received her bachelor's degree in music from The University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
She went on to receive her master's degree in music education and also a specialist degree in education.
Selma was united in marriage to Gerald B. Lawton on July 12, 1945 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion. Selma was principal cellist for the Sioux Falls and Sioux City Symphony Orchestras, and later with the Mankato Symphony.
Selma taught cello and piano for many years. She and Gerald moved to Willmar, MN, in 1975 and to Mankato in 1992.
She was a past member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermillion, Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, and Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato. Selma played an active part in all of these churches' musical activities. She was also a member of Alpha Xi Delta Social Sorority and PEO.
Selma is survived by three children, Karen (Azad) Mesrobian of rural St. Peter, MN, Roxanne Lawton of Woodbury, MN, and Ralph David "RD" (Annette) Lawton of St. Paul, MN; four grandchildren, Kristin Mesrobian and husband, Jeff Johnson, Carrie Mesrobian and husband, Adrian Durand, Kaia Lawton, and Justine Lawton; three great-grandchildren, Sidian Johnson, Owen Johnson, and Matilda Durand Mesrobian; one brother, Robert (Eileen) Gravrok of Minneapolis, MN; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Gerald in 2002; an infant daughter, Jennifer; and one brother, Ralph.

Louie Miller

Funeral services for Louie Miller, 49, of Chamberlain were Monday, Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Bohemian National cemetery at rural Pukwana. Visitation was on Sunday, Jan. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain. A prayer service was held at 6 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.
Louis Micheal Miller was born Jan. 7, 1956 at the Methodist Hospital in Mitchell to Russell "Fuzzy" and Marjorie (Tarabetz) Miller. He graduated from Chamberlain High School, Arizona Automotive Institute, and The University of South Dakota with a bachelor's degree in recreation. While at USD, Louie played football and was on the swimming and diving team. Also at USD, he belonged to the HPER Club. He volunteered for the International Swimming and Diving Meets, IM Track Meets, Sports Spectacular, and Special Olympics. Louie was a member of the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.
He was a lifetime member of the Chamberlain Area Historical Preservation Association. His work experience includes: recreation volunteer at Box Elder Job Corps Center in Nemo, cook, spring board diving instructor and lifeguard, construction worker, bartender, and asbestos removal. Louie formerly owned the Rec N River Jet Ski business and currently he owned a pheasant feather wreath business. Louie enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and attending the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. He also enjoyed spending time hunting and fishing. He liked being Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. He liked to cut firewood "to keep the home fires burning."
Louie passed away on Jan. 20, 2005 at his home in Chamberlain at the age of 49 years and 13 days. Gratefully sharing his life are his mother, Marjorie Miller of Chamberlain; brother Roger Miller of Crete, NE; sister Sheila Powell and husband Terry of Spearfish; three nieces; a nephew; many cousins; and many great nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was his father Russell, maternal grandparents Louis and Gladys Tarabetz, paternal grandparents Mike and Laura Miller.
