Phyllis Steinke

Memorial Services for Phyllis M. (Jensen) Steinke were conducted from the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, NE, on Thursday, Jan. 27 at 1:30 p.m. with Darrel Wissmann, PMA, officiating. Inurnment followed the service in the Gothenburg cemetery at Gothenburg, NE, at 4 p.m.
Phyllis Marguerite (Jensen) Steinke, 90, of Holdrege, died on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. She was born on Oct. 30, 1914 on the family farm near Westerville, the eldest of two daughters born to George W. and Ida Marie (Fiedler) Sweeley. She attended school in Wakonda, and graduated with the class of 1933.
Following her education, she was united in marriage to Conrad Jensen on March 25, 1935 at Olivet, and to this union two sons were born: Larry and Darolin. The family made their home in Yankton. In 1941, they moved to Hastings, NE, prior to settling in Gothenburg. She was employed by the Gothenburg Public School in food service for several years. In 1954, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad.
On Aug. 18, 1960 she was united in marriage to Charles Steinke in Pierce, NE. The couple made their home in Holdrege, where Mrs. Steinke worked as a checker for O.P. Skaggs Grocery, IGA and Jack and Jill for several years prior to her retirement in 1979. She then helped in the lunchroom at the Franklin Elementary School in Holdrege. On Feb. 24, 2002 she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.
Mrs. Steinke enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, cooking, crocheting and camping.
She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Larry O. Jensen and his wife, Jo of Holdrege; step-daughter, Kathryn Dowd and her husband, Dick of Plano, TX; eight grandchildren, Connie Swanson and her husband, Greg of Holdrege, Veronica Rathman and her husband, Grant of Lincoln, NE, Deann Jensen and her fiance, Mike Seymour of Plattsmouth, NE, Amy Baruth and her husband, Kevin of Elm Creek, NE, Lori Posvar and her husband, Tobias of Elm Creek, Brian Jensen and his special friend, Amanda Skiles of Holdrege, Jeff Dowd and his wife, Jeane of Plano, and James Dowd of Plano; 11 great-grandchildren, Drew, Chris and Chance Swanson, Allison and Ashley Burkey, Aden and Brandon Posvar, Brock and Clay Rathman and Keira and Lane Dowd; one sister, Aves Thurmond of Santee, CA; sister-in-law, Cleo Olson and her husband, Roy of Hampton, NE; brother-in-law, Roy Jensen of Tacoma, WA; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Besides her two husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; and son, Darolin "Derry" Jensen on April 30, 2002.
A memorial has been established in her memory to the YMCA of the Prairie Building Fund in Holdrege or the Holdrege Fire Department.
The Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege was in charge of the arrangements.

LaMont Williams

LaMont Joseph (Monty) Williams, age 44, passed away at his residence in Mission, KS.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 21, 2005 at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Vermillion, with Gene Thin Elk and Steve Miller officiating.
Burial was held in the St. Anthony cemetery, Fairfax, at approximately 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. Visitations were at 5 p.m., Thursday, and continued until service time at the United Church of Christ (Congregational), Vermillion, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., Thursday evening. The Kostel Funeral Home and Crematory, Yankton, was in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were Dewey, Fred, Jon and Ward Ertz, Jess, Jack, Jay and Charlie Wolf, Nick and Guy Alther, Steve, Jim and Mike Williams, Corey and Chad Westover, and Floyd Solomon.
Monty, the son of John R. and Diane (Wold) Williams, was born April 19, 1960 in Valentine, NE. He spent his first six years in Mission, and then moved with his family to Vermillion, where he graduated from Vermillion High School in 1978. Monty received a bachelor of library science degree from The University of South Dakota, and a master of library science degree from the University of Missouri. He was employed at the VA Hospital in Kansas City and Milwaukee for five years and at Sprint in Kansas City for 10 years. He was most recently employed with T-Mobile on Olathe, KS.
Monty enjoyed music, reading and had a love of cars. Monty's first love was his relationships with the people in his life. He was always a good listener and had a way of making people feel special simply by being there.
He is survived by is mother, Diane, of Vermillion; a sister and brother-in-law, Joni and Kyle Wilder and two nephews, Damon and Devon Wilder, of Papillion, NE; as well as aunts, uncles and cousins and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, John.

Merle D. Christenson

Merle D. Christenson, 83, of Vermillion died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005 at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Merle Lewis was born Feb. 13, 1921 in Sioux Falls, to Cedric and Pearl (Brown) Lewis. She attended Island Country School near Vermillion, and on Sept. 28, 1940 she married George Christenson in Center, NE.
She was employed at the Zenith Corporation in Sioux City, IA for many years, and also worked at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, the Hy-Vee Store, and the Comfort Inn.
Merle was active in the Rebekahs Lodge, and the Eagles Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; a son, Gary; and a daughter, Debbie.
She is survived by her daughter, Lois (Hubert) Gregoire of Wakonda; a daughter-in-law, JoAnn McChesney of Sioux Falls; and a son-in-law, Doug Fox of Westfield, IN; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Her funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Vermillion. Burial will be in the Hillcrest cemetery in Irene.
Visitation will be Friday, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion.

Ronald Erickson

Ronald A. Erickson, 71, of Elk Point, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005 at Sioux Valley Hospice in Vermillion.
Funeral Service was 10:30 on Monday, Feb. 21, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point, with Rev. Mary Feistner and Associate of Ministry, Bert Burwell officiating. Burial was in church cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m., Sunday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Elk Point. The family was present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Ron was born in rural Elk Point on March 10, 1933 to Alfred and Isabel (Venn) Erickson. Ron attended Peterson Country School, Union County rural school and graduated from Vermillion high school in 1952.
Upon graduating from High School, Ron joined the Air Force and served four years. Ron married Connie Meeves in February 1959 and made their home in Elk Point. Ron and Connie had three children: Richard, Andrea, and Carole.
Ron worked in agricultural-related businesses throughout his life. Throughout his 25 years of sobriety, he helped many live "one day at a time" throughout Alcoholics Anonymous.
He is survived by his son, Rick and his wife, Leslie, of Elk Point, his daughters, Ann and her husband, Mike Gorder of Estelline, and Carole and her husband, Randy Reindl of Adel, IA. Ron was surrounded by eight loving grandchildren, one sister, Duaine and her husband, Dick Forman of Sioux Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Isabel Erickson, and his wife, Connie in June 1978.
Anderson-Siecke Funeral Home of Elk Point, was in charge of arrangements.

Myrtle E. Larsen

Myrtle E. Larsen, 91, of Vermillion, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Morningside Manor, Alcester.
Funeral services are 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion, with the Rev. Judith Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in BluffView cemetery, Vermillion. Visitation is 12:30 to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
The daughter of Gustav A. and Anna (Skarsem) Johnson, Myrtle was born May 11, 1913 in Viborg. She graduated from Viborg High School, and for 30 years was employed as a clerk in Newberry's Department Store in Vermillion.
She married Stanley Larsen Nov. 21, 1936 in Elk Point. He died May 3, 1993. Myrtle was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Vermillion.
She is survived by a son, Gary Larsen, Oakland, CA; a daughter, Gloria Bell, Lincoln, NE; a sister, Evelyn Styles, Vermillion; a sister-in-law, Yuella Terrio, Lincoln, NE; five grandchildren, Eric (Heather) Larsen, Karl Larsen, Tammy (Harlan) Sorensen, Bryan (Lisa) Bell, and Trent (Jenifer) Bell; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kelsey and Christopher Larsen, Jessica and Abigail Sorensen, Hayley, Garrett, Karissa and Nickolas Bell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Arlo Johnson; a sister, Bernice Delaney; two infant sisters; three half-sisters, Marie Hansen, Alice Harrington and Ragna Dwyer; and a foster brother, Robert Terrio.
Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.

Amos H. Gran

Amos H. Gran, 89, formerly of the Maskell/Newcastle, NE, area, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005 at Parkview Haven Nursing Center in Coleridge, NE.
Funeral services were Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 10 a.m. at the Faith Lutheran Church in Maskell. Burial was in the Lime Creek cemetery, rural Maskell. Visitation began at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, with the family present at 6 p.m., and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, NE.

John L. Stuntebeck

John L. Stuntebeck Sr., 93, formerly of Vermillion, went to meet his savior on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005 at Good Samaritan Care Center in Centerville.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Centerville, with a graveside service at 3 p.m. at St. Margaret's cemetery in Kimball. Visitation was prior to the service at the church. Prayer service was at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 26, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Centerville.
John Leonard Stuntebeck Sr. was born to Leonard and Lottie (Drier) Stuntebeck on Aug. 28, 1912 in Kimball. John attended high school in Kimball. Upon graduation in 1929, he attended business school in Mitchell for two years.
On June 12, 1939 John wed the love of his life, Alma Nichols. They started their lives together in Kimball where they were blessed with a set of twins, Jon and Jo. They later moved to Centerville and then to Vermillion where they lived for many years.
John farmed for several years and later drove bulk truck for Stewart Oil Company. John enjoyed boating, fishing, pheasant and deer hunting with his children and grandchildren. The time with his family will be memories that will be kept forever. John enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
John lost his wife in 1988. Upon her death, John lived alone in Vermillion until he moved to the Good Samaritan Care Center in Centerville. John made many friends and truly enjoyed his time at the home. One of John's last wishes was to be able to return to the nursing home to say "goodbye" to his friends. God granted John this wish.
Survivors are his son, John (Karen) Stuntebeck Jr. of Centerville; daughter, Jo (Jerry) Wallace of Sioux Falls; sister, Josephine Hartung of Kimball; grandchildren, Laurie (Chuck) Skotvold of Centerville, Dawn (Corwin) Duerksen of Parker, Terry (Renee) Wallace of Norfolk, NE, Rexann Adams of Lincoln, NE, Damon Wallace of Plainview, NE, Mitchell (Trish) Wallace of Crystal Lake, IL, and Kami (Dan) Derose of Belvidere, IL; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Edward, and one sister, Francis Stuntebeck.
Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.

David N. Tiffany, Sr.

David N. Tiffany Sr., 86, passed away suddenly in Sun City, Ariz., on Feb. 5, 2005.
He was born on July 21, 1918, to Smith and Georgia Tiffany in Aberdeen. He graduated from Aberdeen Central High School in 1936. He worked for Benson Optical for 10 years and then was manager of Walman Optical in Watertown for six years before moving to Rapid City where he started Tiffany Optical, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 1988.
He served his communities as president of the Aberdeen Jaycees, state president of the South Dakota Jaycees, chairman of the board for licensing for the South Dakota Hearing Aid Association and the State Master Counselor for Demolay. In his last years he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sun City.
After his retirement in 1988, David and his wife Lillian wintered in Arizona and spent their summers in South Dakota. Lillian passed away in 1994, and in 1995 David married Arlene Gibbs.
David is survived by his wife, Arlene Tiffany; son, David "Nick" Tiffany of Friday Harbor, Wash.; a daughter, Bonnie Denhardt of Salt Lake City, Utah; grandchildren Mark Denhardt of Seattle, Wash., Susan Denhardt of Salt Lake City, and Tiffany Elliott of San Diego; great-grandchildren, Audrey and Samuel Anderson, and Noah Smith Elliott; step-daughters, Diane Barwin, Groton, and Penny VanKempen, Scottsdale, Ariz.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 10, in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, Sun City. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in David's memory to the First Presbyterian Church, 12225 N. 103rd Ave, Sun City, AZ 85351.
Inurnment will be in the Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish at a later date. The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish has been entrusted with the local arrangements.

Lloyd Hansen

Service of Remembrance for Lloyd Hansen, 86, of Belle Fourche, will be on Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche. Pastors Paul Howard and Harold Brink will officiate. Inurnment at Pineslope cemetery in Belle Fourche will follow at a later date. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills, Belle Fourche, and also one hour prior to the service at the church.
Lloyd passed from this life at Rapid City Regional Hospital on Wednesday Feb. 18, 2004.
Lloyd John Hansen was born May 8, 1917 at Faith, S.D. to Leonard and Josephine B. (Torreson) Hansen. He was baptized in the Lutheran Faith and received his education there. In the early 1930's the family moved to Platte, S.D. Church when he helped his parents on the farm. He began playing string instruments at an early age.
He was married to Lillian Portner on June 23, 1940 at Estherville, Iowa. They returned to Platte for a time and later moved to Washington state to drive logging trucks and work in sawmills. They family later moved to Rapid City where Lloyd owned his own truck and operated a taxi service as well. It was during this time that he established the Country Drifters band. He was an accomplished musician and played the mandolin, guitar, accordion, harmonica at the same time the drum. The band played on KRSD Radio and TV in Rapid City, and accompanied Kitty Wells, Loretta Lynn and other early country western stars when they traveled to the area.
They played for many dances, anniversaries and special occasions as well as at area nightclubs.
Lloyd and Sylvia Vitto Karlson were married on April 26, 1967 at Belle Fourche and have lived there since. For over 30 years they drove pilot cars for wide loads, covering much of the United States as well as providing music with the band. He particularly enjoyed the 'jam sessions' with old friends and area musicians.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, of Belle Fourche; son, Richard Hansen of Salem, Ore., daughters; Darlene Anderson of Hayes, S.D., Donna Hansen of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Ruth Ann Kelley of Rapid City, one step son; Sidney Alvin Marks of Cheyenne, WY, and Two step daughters; Kota Karlson of Belle Fourche, and Nichol Lena Hall of Gillette, Wyo., two brothers; Odin Hansen of Sturgis, S.D. and David Hansen of Corsica, S.D., one sister; Jenny Brink of Mitchell, as well as nine grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, a daughter; Beverly Rabaliati, and a grandson, Christopher Kelley.
Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills of Belle Fourche.

Luther E. Mason

Graveside services for Luther E. Mason, 80, Martinsburg, W.V., will be at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 29 at Bear Butte cemetery in Sturgis with the Rev. Roger Crowhurst officiating.
Luther Mason died on Monday, March 24, 2003, at the Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Md. Funeral services were held in Martinsburg on Thursday, March 27.
Luther was born Jan. 25, 1923, at El Modena, Calif., to Laura (Pountain) and Luther Mason. He graduated from the Lead High School in 1941, attended college at the University of Colorado and Trinity University at San Antonio, Texas. Luther served in the U.S. Army during World War II and Korea.
He is survived by a sister, Freda Schaefle of Baltimore, Md.; three nephews, Fred Schaefle of Glen Burnie, Md., J.D. Mason of Rapid City and Frank Mason of Hot Springs.
Local arrangements are with the Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home in Sturgis.
