Dalton W. McMahon

Dalton William McMahon, 86, of Belle Fourche, died Friday, March 11, at the Fort Meade VA Hospital. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Belle Fourche. The Rev. Buck Malone officiated at the service. Interment with full military honors was in Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established for the church.
He was born Oct. 5, 1918, at Rapid City, the son of Edward and Hattie (Brassfield) McMahon. Following his graduation from Rapid City High School he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving through the war years.
On Aug. 19, 1944, he married Rosemary Pagels in Norfolk, Va. To this union were born two sons, Dalton and Michael. Following his discharge from the Navy he operated a shoe store in Belle Fourche, worked at Wheeler Lumber and Bridge, and as a representative of the American General Life Insurance Company. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Afternoon Coffee Club.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Rosemary; two sons, Dalton E. and his wife, Annie of Portland, N.D., and Michael of Belle Fourche; two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kline -Frost Funeral Chapel of Belle Fourche.

Lois A. Griese

Memorial services for Lois A. Griese will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Platte Funeral Chapel, Platte, S.D. Griese died April 3, 2004 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Lois Griese, daughter of Fred and Bernice (Driessen) Ruediger, was born in Twin Brooks on Oct. 11, 1930. She attended grade school in Twin Brooks and graduated from Milbank High School in 1948. After high school she worked as a secretary for the Internal Revenue Service in Aberdeen.
On Nov. 9, 1951, she married Leon R. Griese in Milbank. They lived in Milbank for about a year before purchasing Roy Lake Resort near Lake City. She and her husband lived and operated the resort for 31 years. In 1983 they sold the resort and built a home near the lake and retired there until 1999. At that time they moved to Platte. Mr. Griese died on Aug. 26, 2000. Just before she died she was living at the Platte Nursing Home.
Lois A. Griese was baptized as an adult and confirmed at Lake City Lutheran Church where she was a member at the time of her death. She and her husband were active in the church until they moved to Platte.
Survivors include one daughter, Lezlee Koch and husband, Gary, of Colton; one son, Lance and wife, Aimee, of Platt; five grandchildren; and, one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Marilyn Ruediger of Spearfish.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Theodore W. Olsen

Theodore W. Olsen passed away at home March 19, 2005.
He was born October 29, 1929 in Nemo, SD. He served in the U.S. Army, was a lifelong member and Past Commander of American Legion Post Westphal Post 251, Robbinsdale, Minn. and Ambassador at Large Morroco Temple, Jacksonville, Fla.
Ted spent his life in volunteerism as Hospital Chairman for West Jax Shrine Club, a member of the Street Walkers, Chairman of Bingo Committee and many other capacities.
He is preceded in death by his wife Sally. He is survived by his dear friend Jane Blanchard, sister Beverly Carr (Joe), brother-in-law John Hyatt (Helen), nieces Debra Leonard (Mike) and Shelly Kersh, nephew David Hyatt and many relatives and friends both in Jacksonville and Minneapolis, Minn.
Ted made friends with everyone he met and will be missed by many.
A memorial service will be held, Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Chuch at 11:00 A.M.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Transportation Fund C/O Morroco Shrine Temple Jacksonville, Fla. or Shepherd of the Woods Lutheran Church.

Edna G. Vaughn

Edna G. Vaughn, 93, Spearfish died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Crook County Memorial Nursing Home, Sundance, Wyo.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2005 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2005 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Spearfish with the Reverend Peter Dahlberg officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.
Memorials can be directed to benefit the High Plains Western Heritage Center of Spearfish, Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church or Crook County Memorial Nursing Home of Sundance.
Edna was born June 17, 1911 to Andro and Mary Ann (Bickerdyke) Carlson on the family ranch near Erickson, Mont. She attended Timberview country school near Erickson, Mont. She married Ernest Vaughn in July of 1924 at Belle Fourche. The couple worked on various ranches along the Little Missouri in Carter County, Mont, before homesteading on their own ranch. Hard times forced them to leave and
they then leased land near Hulett, Wyo. for a brief time before returning to Carter County, Mont. They settled back on their original homestead where they raised cattle and ranched. In 1961 the couple retired and moved to Sturgis, where Edna enjoyed her lawn and flower gardens. In 1989 the couple moved to Spearfish, and in 1992 due to declining health the couple moved to the Crook County Memorial Nursing Home in Sundance, Wyo.
Edna enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing and riding horses in her early years.
She is survived by three daughters; Shirley (Junior) Melum, Capitol, Mont, Ella (Charles) Oleson, Beulah, Wyo. and Lois (Dan) Nikodym, Fallbrook, Calif., one sister Mary Huss, Sundance, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, James, one daughter, Ernestine, one grandson, Randy, one sister, Tilda Docany and four brothers; Carl, Frank, Floyd and Roy Carlson.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Helen M. Herrett

Helen Maxine Herrett, 87, Belle Fourche died Wednesday, March 16, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter, Vivian Gordon, Rapid City; and a sister, Betty Dennison, Corpus Christi, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and her husband, Oliver Herrett.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, March 21, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services at the church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, at the Belle Fourche Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Pete Bonnichsen officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
Memorials may be made to the Belle Fourche Library or to the Belle Fourche Wesleyan Church Exterior Fund.
A potluck lunch will follow at the Belle Fourche First Western Bank Hospitality Room.

Leslie W. Cooper

Leslie Wayne Cooper, 69, formerly of Belle Fourche, died Friday, March 18, 2005, in Sioux Falls.
Graveside committal services will be held Friday, March 25, at 10 a.m. at Black Hills National cemetery with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating. The Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will provide military honors. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to a time of fellowship at noon at the Belle Fourche Country Club.
Les was born April 6, 1935, in Wheatland, Wyo., to Floyd "Bub" and Marie Alta (Howe) Cooper. His family moved when his father bought a place in Belle Fourche. He grew up in the Belle Fourche area. His father later bought a ranch in Harding County.
He was a Corporal in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Following his honorable discharge, Les returned to the Black Hills area where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years selling 17 cent stamps to little old ladies. He lived most of his life in Belle Fourche. He enjoyed going to his father's ranch in Harding County so that he could pretend he was a cowboy.
Les was married to Delores June Browning on Jan. 1, 1957. They had three boys, LeWayne, Dana, and Drew. Les was especially proud of his grandchildren.
Les loved basketball, tennis, and anything that had to do with drinking Schlitz. Les loved to drink (Schlitz) and drive (El Caminos). He also loved to smoke (Winstons). His idols were John Wayne and the Marlboro Man. He loved to ride on a tractor (Ford - 9N) and he loved Willy's Jeeps. Les loved oyster stew and getting up early. He also had a fondness for antiques and never threw anything away. His best friend was Richard "Dick" H. Meyer. Dick brought a lot of laughs and happiness to Les's heart.
Survivors include his three sons and their families, LeWayne Cooper and his son, Scotty, Rapid City, Dana Cooper and his wife, Terri and their children, Kristina and Larissa, Newcastle, Wyo., and Drew Cooper and his wife, Doreen and their children, Christian, and Carly, Spearfish; two brothers and their wives, Jack and Donna Cooper and John and Kay Cooper; four nephews; one niece; and one step-niece.
He is also survived by his stepmother, Louise McDermott, Sturgis, and his step-brother, Larry Gardner, Maryland. Les will be missed by many, but he'll live on in country songs, country scenes, beautiful sunsets, gentle breezes, animals, babies, and nature he loved and appreciated so much.
Les was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial has been established to Alcoholics Anonymous.

Perry Blaine Rosenberger

Perry Blaine Rosenberger, 90, Sturgis, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at the Sturgis Community Long Term Care Center.
Committal services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, at the Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis with Chaplain Charley Conger officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.
Perry was born May 17, 1914, at San Francisco, CA, to Perry and Ellen (Persson) Rosenberger. His mother died while Perry was an infant. He was raised by family in Onida, SD. Perry graduated from Pierre High School.
Perry joined the South Dakota National Guard and was activated for duty during World War II as a combat engineer. He served a total of three years overseas before returning home with an honorable discharge.
Perry found work with the SD Highway Department in Sioux Falls. He tested soil types before moving to Belle Fourche where he worked at the local hospital.
Perry married Nadine Munkres at Cheyenne, WY, on June 15, 1967. They lived in Cheyenne, WY, Scottsbluff, NE, Chadron, NE, and Hot Springs, SD before retiring in 1985. They moved to Sturgis in 1994 to be closer to family.
Perry was a member of the VFW and a former member of the Pro-rodeo Hall of Fame Society.
Family includes his wife, Nadine Rosenberger, Sturgis; three daughters, Meredith Beug, Sturgis, Judith Fritz, Tucson, AZ, and Lynda Morgan, Spearfish; seven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Dennis Beug.
A memorial has been established to Northern Hills Hospice.

Theodore W. Olsen

Theodore W. Olsen passed away at home March 19, 2005.

Loretta Giroux Maxwell

Loretta Giroux Maxwell, 89, former Lead resident, died Jan. 3, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nev. Burial was in the Chief Tokopa cemetery in Pahrup, Nev., with Father Bruno of Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church officiating.
Loretta was born in Madison, S.D. on Sept. 14, 1915. She was married to Matt Giroux. He died in 1958. Loretta was employed as a telephone operator for the Homestake Mining Company until her retirement in 1977. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church while she lived in Lead. After her marriage to Jack Maxwell they moved to Pahrump in 1978 returning to Lead for the summers until his death. in 1985 She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include her daughter, Shirley (Giroux) DeLaGrange of Pahrump, 10 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Matt Giroux and Jack Maxwell, two sons, Pat Giroux of Pahrump in November 1995 and Mark Giroux, Perry, Ohio, in October 1995, a daughter, Theresa Giroux Vrbka, Omaha, Neb., July 2003.

Velma "Susie" Neva Higgins

Velma "Susie" Neva Higgins 91 of Sturgis died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at Sturgis Community Health Care Center LTC.
Visitation will be from noon until 7 p.m. Friday March 25, 2005, and one hour before services at Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Sturgis. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. Harold Delbridge officiating. Interment will
follow at the Whitewood cemetery.
Velma was born April 7, 1913 to Earl & Minnie (Hinders) Smith at Holland, Iowa the second of five children. She attended school in Holland, moving with her family to a ranch east of Pierre and graduated from Blunt High School in 1933. On Feb. 19, 1936 she
married Charles Bryan Higgins at Pierre. Together they lived on a ranch east of Blunt until her husband died in a tractor accident. She moved into Pierre in 1940 and lived there until moving to Whitewood in 1976. In February of 1982 she moved to Hills View Highrise in
Sturgis, living there until moving to the Sturgis Community Health Care Center LTC in 1996.
She worked for 13 years for the Holiday Inn Corp. at Pierre as head housekeeper. She was a member of WWI Auxiliary, and the Christian Reformed Church.
Survivors include daughter Rose Derby and husband Albert of Whitewood, son Joe Higgins of Newell, sister Dorothy Wilcox of Sturgis, sisters-in-law Erma Smith of Pierre, Irene Smith of Tulare, S.D., eight grandchildren, Donna Glanzer of Spokane, Wash., Barbara Baldwin of Burnsville, Minn., LeeAnn Kurtz of Sheridan, Wyo., Donald B. Green of Belle Fourche, Janette Wilder of Tigard, Ore., Kathleen Kerns of Sheridan, Wyo., Douglas Derby of Belle Fourche, Susan Stelter of Holloman AFB, N.M., 29 great-grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bryan Higgins, parents Earl & Minnie (Hinders) Smith, brothers Alex Smith, George Smith, sister Marie Jarrard and her husband Richard, brother-in-law John Wilcox.
