Edna G. Vaughn

Edna G. Vaughn, 93, Spearfish died Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at the Crook County Memorial Nursing Home, Sundance, Wyo.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2005 at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Monday, March 28, 2005 at Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church in Spearfish with the Reverend Peter Dahlberg officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.
Memorials can be directed to benefit the High Plains Western Heritage Center of Spearfish, Calvary Temple Assembly of God Church or Crook County Memorial Nursing Home of Sundance.
Edna was born June 17, 1911 to Andro and Mary Ann (Bickerdyke) Carlson on the family ranch near Erickson, Mont. She attended Timberview country school near Erickson, Mont. She married Ernest Vaughn in July of 1924 at Belle Fourche. The couple worked on various ranches along the Little Missouri in Carter County, Mont, before homesteading on their own ranch. Hard times forced them to leave and they then leased land near Hulett, Wyo. for a brief time before returning to Carter County, Mont. They settled back on their original homestead where they raised cattle and ranched. In 1961 the couple retired and moved to Sturgis, where Edna enjoyed her lawn and flower gardens. In 1989 the couple moved to Spearfish, and in 1992 due to declining health the couple moved to the Crook County Memorial Nursing Home in Sundance, Wyo.
Edna enjoyed cooking, quilting, sewing and riding horses in her early years.
She is survived by three daughters; Shirley (Junior) Melum, Capitol, Mont, Ella (Charles) Oleson, Beulah, Wyo. and Lois (Dan) Nikodym, Fallbrook, Calif., one sister Mary Huss, Sundance, 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, James, one daughter, Ernestine, one grandson, Randy, one sister, Tilda Docany and four brothers; Carl, Frank, Floyd and Roy Carlson.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Eleanor M. Weaver

Eleanor M. Weaver, 78, Spearfish and formerly of Lead, died Friday, March 25, at Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Eleanor M. Olson was born on March 20, 1927 at Portland, N.D. The family moved to Lantry, S.D., in 1931 and she attended grade school in Lantry and high school in Dupree, S.D. She married Lynn A. Weaver on April 3, 1943 at Dupree and they made their home there until 1953 when they moved to Lead. Eleanor went to work as a clerk in the Red Owl Store in Lead. She went to work at J.C. Penney in Lead in 1967 and retired from there in 1984. During her retirement years she enjoyed golfing and bowling, and traveling with her husband. Due to her husband's health they moved to Rapid City in 1999 and following his death in 2001 she returned to Lead. She had recently moved to the Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Eleanor was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Tomahawk Country Club, was active with bowling, sewing and cross-stitching.
Eleanor is survived by three sons: Lyle A. Weaver, Tahlequah, Okla.; Steve (Julie) Weaver, Black Hawk; and Joel (Tonchie) Weaver, Rapid City; one brother, Ole Olson, Manhattan, Mont.; four sisters; Marian Rimestad and Inga Birkeland both of Spearfish; Ruby Gray, Dupree, S.D.; and Vivian (Dennis) Thomas, Deadwood; ten grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; her brother-in-law, Darrell (Mabel) Weaver and sister-in-law, Lavonne Lawien and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her Husband, Lynn; Parents, two brothers, Tom & Vernon, preceded Eleanor in death.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at the Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead. Burial will follow in Black Hills National cemetery at Sturgis. A closed casket visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service.
Memorials may be given to the Hospice of the Northern Hills.
The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home and Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel have been entrusted with the funeral arrangements.

Mary Fischer

Mary Fischer, 86, of Lead died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at her home in Lead.
Funeral services are pending with the Carlsen & Aldinger, Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel.

Mary I. Hughes

Mary I. Hughes, 57, of Spearfish and formally of Ft. Pierre died Tues., March 29, 2005 at Lookout Memorial Hospital. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre with burial to follow at Scotty Philip cemetery.
Mary was born on Aug. 6, 1947 in Pierre to Johnny and Catherine (Leonard) Pexa. She grew up in the Agar and Ft. Pierre. She attended grade school in Agar and graduated from Ft. Pierre High School in 1965. After Graduating she attended Northern State University and received a B.A. in Education. She then went on and attended New Mexico State University and received her Masters in Guidance and Counseling in 1971.
Mary was united in marriage to Tom Hughes at St. John's Catholic Church in Ft. Pierre on Aug. 10, 1968.
She was a Teacher and Counselor at Harrold, Pierre, Ft. Pierre, Rapid City, Pierre Indian Learning Center and Lower Brule Schools.
Mary was active at St. John's Catholic Church. She dedicated her life and career to helping children through teaching, coaching and counseling. She was always involved in all of her son's athletics and educational endeavors.
She will be greatly missed by her two son's Travis Hughes and wife Cindy of Phoenix, Ariz. and Jeb Hughes of Spearfish; five brothers, Terry Pexa and wife Deb of Sioux Falls, Wade Pexa and wife Carmon of Rapid City, Dennis Pexa and wife Donna of Tucson Ariz., Revi Pexa and wife Dana of Albuquerque, N.M., and Joe Pexa and wife Betty of Arizona City, A.Z.; many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who loved her deeply.
She was preceded in death by her parents Johnny and Catherine Pexa and her husband Tom.
Arraignments have been placed in care of Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. A Memorial has been established in Mary's name. Memorials may be directed to 130 Hillcrest, Spearfish, S.D. 57783

Mollie Kalmbach

Mollie Kalmbach, 91, of Belle Fourche, died Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at David M. Dorsett Health Care Facility in Spearfish.
Mollie is survived by her son; Bryon Kalmbach, Springfield, S.D., daughter; Bettty (Ron) Claughton, Winston, OR, brother; Victor (Donna) Greenwaldt, Sturgis, two sisters; Mildred Peckenpaugh, Vancouver, Wash. and Alvna Biegler, Belle Fourche, 8 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1980, sisters; Julia, Lydia, and Marie and her brother, Jake Greenwaldt.
Private inurnment took place at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
The Carlsen & Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Joan M. Johnson

Joan Margaret Johnson, 74, Whitewood, died Feb. 24, 2005, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Visitation will be from 1-6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 25, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish, with Pastor Steve Agan officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.
A memorial has been established to benefit the Northern Hills Hospice.
Joan Margaret Johnson was born on Nov. 12, 1930, to John and Dorothea Olsen in Albert Lea, Minn. Joan grew up in Albert Lea and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1948. After graduating, she cared for her ill mother for a year and a half. She worked her way through college at the University of Minnesota and Mankato State, where she graduated in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in education. While studying at the University of Minnesota she met her future husband Robert Johnson. She then taught home economics at Waseca High School in Waseca, Minn. On June 7, 1958, she married Robert in Albert Lea. They moved to Bloomington, Minn., where all of their children were born. Ten years later they moved to Spearfish. They purchased their ranch near Whitewood in 1974. In 1975, the family moved into their newly built log home where they have lived since. After a long battle with Pancreatic Cancer, she passed away on Feb. 24, 2005.
Joan served on the Whitewood Library board for 25 years. She was a very active member of the United Church of Christ in Spearfish for 35 years where she served on various board committees, taught Sunday school, and participated in the Woman's Fellowship. She was also a PEO member. She was dedicated to her God, her church, her family, and her community.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Robert; her daughters, Beth (Jamie) McConaty and Lara (Clark) Coberly; her daughter in-law, Heidi (Jim) Anderson and her six grandchildren: Abby, Will John, Cavan, Megan, Annika, and Aidan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her son Eric.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.

Helen M. Herrett

Helen Maxine Herrett, 87, Belle Fourche died Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
She is survived by her daughter, Vivian Gordon, Rapid City; and a sister, Betty Dennison, Corpus Christi, Texas.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter and her husband, Oliver Herrett.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday, March 21, at Kline-Frost Funeral Chapel in Belle Fourche and for one hour before services at the church.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 22, at the Belle Fourche Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Pete Bonnichsen officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche.
Memorials may be made to the Belle Fourche Library or to the Belle Fourche Wesleyan Church Exterior Fund.
A potluck lunch will follow at the Belle Fourche First Western Bank Hospitality Room.

Leslie W. Cooper

Leslie Wayne Cooper, 69, formerly of Belle Fourche, died Friday, March 18, 2005, in Sioux Falls.
Graveside committal services will be held Friday, March 25, at 10 a.m. at Black Hills National cemetery with Chaplain Moe Greiner officiating. The Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard will provide military honors. Family and friends may gather at Kinkade Funeral Chapel prior to leaving for the cemetery. Family and friends are also invited to a time of fellowship at noon at the Belle Fourche Country Club.
Les was born April 6, 1935, in Wheatland, Wyo., to Floyd "Bub" and Marie Alta (Howe) Cooper. His family moved when his father bought a place in Belle Fourche. He grew up in the Belle Fourche area. His father later bought a ranch in Harding County.
He was a Corporal in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Following his honorable discharge, Les returned to the Black Hills area where he worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years selling 17 cent stamps to little old ladies. He lived most of his life in Belle Fourche. He enjoyed going to his father's ranch in Harding County so that he could pretend he was a cowboy.
Les was married to Delores June Browning on Jan. 1, 1957. They had three boys, LeWayne, Dana, and Drew. Les was especially proud of his grandchildren.
Les loved basketball, tennis, and anything that had to do with drinking Schlitz. Les loved to drink (Schlitz) and drive (El Caminos). He also loved to smoke (Winstons). His idols were John Wayne and the Marlboro Man. He loved to ride on a tractor (Ford - 9N) and he loved Willy's Jeeps. Les loved oyster stew and getting up early. He also had a fondness for antiques and never threw anything away. His best friend was Richard "Dick" H. Meyer. Dick brought a lot of laughs and happiness to Les's heart.
Survivors include his three sons and their families, LeWayne Cooper and his son, Scotty, Rapid City, Dana Cooper and his wife, Terri and their children, Kristina and Larissa, Newcastle, Wyo., and Drew Cooper and his wife, Doreen and their children, Christian, and Carly, Spearfish; two brothers and their wives, Jack and Donna Cooper and John and Kay Cooper; four nephews; one niece; and one step-niece.
He is also survived by his stepmother, Louise McDermott, Sturgis, and his step-brother, Larry Gardner, Maryland. Les will be missed by many, but he'll live on in country songs, country scenes, beautiful sunsets, gentle breezes, animals, babies, and nature he loved and appreciated so much.
Les was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial has been established to Alcoholics Anonymous.

Hilda J. Thompson

Hilda Johanna Thompson, 92, Spearfish, died at the Dorsett Health Care Center in Spearfish on Sunday morning, Sept. 7, 2003.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis and one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spearfish with the Rev. Kent Stillson officiating. Burial follows at the Rose Hill cemetery.
A memorial has been established to the church.
Hilda was born at Terraville, S.D., on July 21, 1911, to David and Wilhelmina (Lepimaki) Korpi. The family moved to the Newell area where she grew up on the family farm. On Aug. 30, 1931, she married Arthur Thompson in Belle Fourche. They lived in Newell until 1953 where they owned and operated the Grocery Store (formerly Moutka Grocery). They moved to Lead where she worked for Roesler's Grocery, then to Spearfish Canyon and to Spearfish in 1967.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Mrs. David (June) Treber of Spearfish and Deloris Baker of St. Onge; also three cousins, Impi, Inez and Anne who live in Massachussetts.
Her parents, husband Arthur, son Terry and brothers, Victor, John and Waino preceded her in death.
Hilda was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Newell Eastern Start Chapter 121, Spearfish Past Matrons Club, Spearfish Senior Center and the Sons and Daughters of Suomi.

Charles J. "Charlie" Croft

Charles J. "Charlie" Croft, 49, of Scottsbluff, was called home to be with our Lord on September 4, 2003 in rural Weld County near Eaton, Colo. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at WestWay Christian Church in Scottsbluff with Pastor Willie Coop officiating. Inurnment will take place in the Rose Hill cemetery at Spearfish on Oct. 4. Memorial contributions may be given to the family for a memorial to be designated at a later time. The Jolliffe Funeral Home in Scottsbluff is in charge of the arrangements.
Charlie was born October 7, 1953 in Sioux Falls, the son of Donald and Ramona (Sorensen) Croft. He received his education in Sioux Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School Class of 1972. While in high school, he collaborated with the Sioux Falls Police Department in the Explorer Scout Program.
Charlie enlisted in the United States Air Force on May 26, 1972. He served overseas for two years in Holland before his honorable discharge on February 3, 1975. Charlie had a variety of educational experiences. He attended Mitchell Area Vocational Technical School where he received a diploma for Powerline Construction and Maintenance. In addition he completed Missouri Valley Line Constructor's Apprenticeship and graduated from the four year, seven step program and then had on the job training for lineman in 1983.
Charlie worked for the South Dakota State Highway Patrol where he was headquartered out of Onida, SD. He also worked for the Sioux Falls Fire Department, Station House No. 1. He was employed by Western Area Power Administration for 15 years. Charlie worked various contractor jobs throughout the United States. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 55 of Des Moines, Iowa for over 20 years. At the time of his death, he was employed by Danella Electric of Denver, Colo.
He has many friends in Scottsbluff, Sioux Falls and throughout the United States. Thankful for having shared Charlie's life were his family, children, and puppies. He loved nature, flowers, and the outdoors in the fall. He was always in good spirits and kept everyone laughing. Charlie would go out of his way to help people whether he knew them or not. Nobody was a stranger to Charlie.
Charlie was a member of WestWay Christian Church in Scottsbluff. We all know he is resting peacefully now in the comfort of our Lord and Savior.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Kim Croft of Scottsbluff, Neb.; daughter Erin "Annie" Croft of Los Angeles, Calif.; sons Landon, Loagon, and Layton all of Scottsbluff; mother Ramona Croft of Sioux Falls; father-in-law and mother-in-law Bob and Ardis Golay of Spearfish; brothers Jim (Debbie) Croft, Gordon (Sharon) Croft, and Toby (Anita) Croft all of Sioux Falls, and Tracy (Jeanne) Croft of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister Donna (Miles) Mitchell of Sioux Falls; sister-in-law Kelly Crotty of Spearfish; and several nieces and nephews including his godsons Tyler Croft and Garrett and Ryan Crotty. Charlie is also survived by his special friends Char and Bethany Reynolds of Scottsbluff and Mike Milstead of Sioux Falls; and his beloved labs Tessa and Emma.
His father, an infant sister Karen, and his paternal and maternal grandparents preceded Charlie in death.
