Harry Elias Wipf

Harry Elias Wipf, age 86, of Watertown, died Wednesday, April 20 at the Dorsett Healthcare Facility, Spearfish. Burial will be in the Spink County Missionary Church cemetery, rural Carpenter. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Kuhler Funeral Home and prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning. Harry was born June 1, 1918, at Frankfort, S.D. to Elias S. and Mary (Tschetter) Wipf. He attended rural schools through eighth grade. Because his father died suddenly, Harry took on the task of farming the family farm at age 13. During his youth he became a member of the Ebenezer K.M.B. Church and was baptized in 1937. Responsibility to his mother and siblings kept Harry on the family farm until after his marriage to Lillian "Lily" Tschetter on January 26, 1941.
During the years he shared his life with Lily, Harry successfully ran the family farm, became a short distance gravel and LP gas truck driver, farmed for R.J. Hofer, owned and operated a Gamble's Hardware store in Willow Lake, S.D. and finally, in 1950, Harry and Lillian purchased the Lindland Homestead in Merton Township, Clark County, S.D. where they remained until 1968. Together, living and working on the farm, they raised their family of four children. They attended the Clark Assembly of God Church throughout these years. Following the high school graduation of their youngest child, Wayne, Lily suffered a stroke and died on June 8, 1968.
In April of 1971, Harry married Mary (Elmore) Miller and began an interesting new chapter in his life. From this union, Harry became a step-parent to Anne and Scott Miller, and step-grandparent to Chad, Whitney and Maverick. Together Harry and Mary involved themselves in the Watertown Community through civic and church activities. They attended the Ninth Avenue Methodist Church. Harry and Mary were "handy" and artistic so their activities reflected their abilities and interests. Harry worked at several jobs including maintenance work at Jenkins Memorial Nursing Home in Watertown. They traveled and enjoyed visits around the U.S. as well as England. Harry toured Russia and Israel during this time as well. Sadly, and after a two year battle with cancer, Mary died in 1992.
After living alone for 10 years, Harry's heart became a problem and following heart surgery he was diagnosed with dementia and went to live with his youngest son, Wayne, until entering the nursing home.
Harry is survived by his three children, Harriet (Ralph) Dougherty, New Brighton, Minn., Joan (Greg) Stellrecht, Onalaska, Wisc., Wayne (Myriam) Wipf, Spearfish; one daughter-in-law, Bonnie (Sloan) Wipf, Black Hawk; two brothers, Floyd (Adena), Huron, and Melvin (Gwen), Ventura, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Schmidt, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and Juanita Wipf, of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; one brother-in-law, Joe S. M. Hofer of Simi Valley, Calif.; along with 14 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides Lillian and Mary, two sons, Arlan Harry Wipf and Reginald Lee Wipf, and five brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
In his golden years Harry's charming smile drew many to his side. We thank all those who helped him through to the end of his life.
