John C. England

John C. England, Sr., 85, of Yankton, and formerly of Spearfish, died Monday, Sept. 5, 2005 at a nursing home in Yankton.
John Clifford England was born March 6, 1916 at Gillette, N.J., the son of Leonard Samuel and Margaret (Mills) England. The family lived at Berkley Heights, N.J., where he attended school, graduating from Summit High School in 1934 at Summit, N.Y. In November 1935 he entered the U.S. Army, which he made a career of, retiring in April 1969. He served during WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He married Yuki Fukishima Jan. 14, 1955 in Tokyo, Japan. Following his retirement he worked for the defense department as a federal policeman for eight years. He lived in various places throughout the United States. and Costa Rica before moving to Spearfish in 1984.
John is survived by his wife, Yuki, of Gardena, Calif.; three sons, Edward England, of Detroit, Mich, Douglas J. England, of Poway, Calif., and John C. England, Jr., of Spearfish, 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and one sister.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 at the Aldinger Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Spearfish with Pastor Dan Kent officiating.

Wanda M. Kruse

Funeral services for Wanda M. Kruse, 80, of Belle Fourche and formerly of George, Iowa, will be Saturday, Oct. 9 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche. Pastor Paul Howard and Chaplain Charles Conger will officiate and interment will be in Pine Slope cemetery.
Mrs. Kruse passed away following a lengthy illness late Monday, Oct. 4 at Palms Country View Adult Care in Belle Fourche.
Wanda Mae Nagel was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Doon, Iowa, to Magdalene Laackmann Nagel and Carl Robert Nagel. Wanda had two sisters, Betty Lou and Gloria Ann and a brother, Conrad Owen Nagel who died at approximately six months of age. She grew up in Doon and was educated there, as well as attending beauty school in Sioux City. She also worked in a dairy for a time.
On June 18, 1944, Wanda married Glenn Arthur Kruse at Central Baptist Church in Sioux Falls. On Nov. 28, 1945, their first child, Jerome Glenn was born and passed away the next day. On April 11, 1947, Dianna Lynn was born, followed by Jerry Alan who was adopted. Debra Lynn and Dorene Kay were adopted in 1958 and 1959 respectively from Korea. Jay Arthur was born June 16, 1960. In addition to adopting three children, Glenn and Wanda were responsible for the immigration of two other Korean girls, Leah Gerard and Kim Bohnsack, and a boy from Eastern India, Raju Dahlstrom. They also supported two children, Sung Yul Song in Korea, and Estela Antonia Tzaput Nimajay in Guatemala. The Kruses also had two foster children, Doug and Nancy and several foreign exchange students.
Glenn and Wanda farmed for many years near George, Iowa, and raised the family there. They also milked, operated Kruse Mfg., making farrowing crates and metal gates. They oversaw their children's operation of Green Acres Dog Kennels, raising many different breeds of dogs.
Wanda was active in her community and Central Baptist Church and its women's group. She enjoyed working with the youth in the area as well as teaching Sunday School and being a Girls Scout leader. She loved being with her family during their activities and events, being a dedicated Christian mother.
She always looked for the fun in life and gave freely of her time and energy to her family and encouraged them to broaden their horizons. In the early 1990s they moved to the Spearfish area, later moving to Yankton for a time. They returned to the Black Hill two years ago, living in Belle Fourche to be near their family.
Her family includes her husband, Glenn A. Kruse of Belle Fourche; son, Jay and Laurie Kruse of Spearfish and their family, Jacob, Katy and Tanna Kruse, Michael Larson and Tina and Elizabeth Highland, Kelby Kruse, Tia Larson and Kayleb Highland; son, Jerry Kruse of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Dianna Palm, Belle Fourche and her family, Wendy and Keith Neuharth and April Palm; daughter, Dorene and Steve Schemelfenig, Indianola, Iowa, and their family, Jaime, Cole and Taylor; daughter, Deborah Kruse of Tucson, Ariz.; as well as the foster children they took into their home and foreign children they sponsored.
Her son, Jerome, her parents, her brother Conrad, and her sisters, Betty Nagel Iwen and Glory Nagel DeWindt, preceded Wanda in death.
A memorial has been established.

Clarence F. Bender

Clarence F. Bender, 82, formerly of Lead, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005 at his home in Rapid City following a lengthy illness.
Clarence was born June 20, 1923 at Deadwood to Clarence J. and Minnie (Bosso) Bender. They lived in Sunrise, Wyo., for a time then lived in Trojan, S.D., where Clarence attended school. He graduated from Lead High School in 1941 and attended School of Mines for a year and a half before joining the Army on March 4, 1943. He served in Central Europe, France, and Germany. Following his discharge in 1946, Clarence returned to Lead and worked for the Bald Mountain Mining Company. He then began work in the Electrical Department for the Homestake Mining Company where he worked for 31 years retiring in 1985 as Electrical Foreman.
Clarence married June Aspen on May 9, 1948 in Lead. Following June's retirement in 1990, they enjoyed traveling all over the world, including New Zealand, Australia, Europe, Hawaii and Alaska. They traveled nearly all 50 states until his health prevented him from doing so. Clarence and June moved to Rapid City in 1994.
Clarence enjoyed ice fishing, and was an avid sportsman. He liked the Bronco's and the Rockies as well as the Post 22 team. He especially enjoyed playing cribbage with his friends from the Homestake.
Clarence was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 5969 of Deadwood and was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, June, of Rapid City and one son, Larry Bender of Spearfish, (and Gillette, Wyo., ) He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 15, 2004 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead with Rev. Peary Wilson officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at 1:30 p.m. at Black Hills National cemetery near Sturgis. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. A memorial has been established to the Trinity United Methodist Church in Lead.
The Aldinger Funeral Home, Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Greg Coolley

Greg Coolley, 42, died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at his home in Lead as a result of a heart attack.
Gregory Scott Coolley was born on Jan. 7, 1963 to Paul and Betty (Miller) Coolley in Deadwood. Greg grew up in Terraville and attended Terraville and Lead/Deadwood schools. He graduated from Lead High School in 1981. While in high school he participated in Football and wrestling. He has worked at Carr's Pizza Hut; the City of Lead; Homestake; Deer Mountain; Seaton Publishing and as a heavy equipment operator on construction. He cooked at the Stampmill; Nugget Café; Silverado and Deadwood Gulch.
Greg enjoyed lots of friends. He spent time motorcycling, camping, hunting, fishing, and he played in a dart league. He played the guitar and harmonica with friends in a local band.
Greg is survived by two brothers, Robert "Ron" and Monique Coolley, Sturgis, Doug and Lisa Coolley, Sturgis; five sisters, Michele and Jearld Kindsfater, Deadwood; Rhonda Thomas, Henderson, Nev.; Dawnelle Coolley, Denver, Colo.; Deb and Randy Fisher, Lead; and Lauri and Sherry Coolley Schwab, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Betty Coolley, two infant brothers, Ronald Paul and Gary Allen.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 21, 2005 at the Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead, with Rev. Patrick McBride officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge cemetery in Deadwood. The Aldinger Funeral Home of Spearfish and Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, July 20, 2005 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral chapel in Lead.
A memorial has been established.

Martin A. Holzwarth

Martin A. Holzwarth, 87, of Spearfish died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005 at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish.
Martin was born September 6, 1917 in Eureka, S.D., to Jacob and Margaret (Schick) Holzwarth. He attended country school near Artus, S.D., through the eighth grade then began farm work. Martin also worked at the CC camp before joining the Army, serving in World War II. After his discharge he returned to Eureka and married Martha Schutz on Dec. 2, 1945. They farmed in the Eureka area until 1954 when they moved to Lead. Martin worked at the Homestake Mine until 1957 when he transferred to the Homestake Sawmill in Spearfish. After his retirement in 1980 he and Martha remained in Spearfish.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, western movies, popcorn and ice cream. Martin was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church, the V.F.W. and the American Legion.
Martin is survived by his wife, Martha, of Spearfish; two sons, Bruce Holzwarth of Belle Fourche and Neil Holzwarth of Hill City, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
His parents, two brothers and three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services were to be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, 2005 at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Spearfish. Burial with military honors will be in the Black Hills National cemetery at Sturgis. The Aldinger Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Velma Bain

Velma M. Bain, 93, of Spearfish, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2005, at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at Mt. Moriah cemetery in Deadwood with Pastor Gordon Higgins officiating.
Velma was born in Deadwood on June 28, 1912, to Locke Hubbard and Beulah Mae (Miller) Kirtley. She grew up in Deadwood and graduated from Deadwood High School in 1930. She worked at Black Hills Mercantile until 1936, when she moved to San Diego, Calif. Velma was married in 1946 and to this union her son Ronald James was born. She worked at various places in San Diego. Velma moved to Spearfish in 1994.
Velma was a life member of the Deadwood Chapter No. 23 of Eastern Star.
Velma is survived by one son, Ronald and his wife Karen Bain, and two granddaughters, Sierra and Nicole Bain, all of San Diego, Calif.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Beulah and Charlotte.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Pearl Martin

Pearl L. (Washburn) Martin, age 79, died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2005, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Pearl was born in Lead on July 3, 1926 to Lee and Bernice Washburn. She attended school in Lead, graduating in 1944. Pearl had a special love for sports and helped form and play on a girl's football team in high school. She also was true lover of animals. Most of all she was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Pearl lived in the Rapid City area the majority of her adult life.
Pearl is survived by her husband, Jerry Martin, of Rapid City; four daughters, Toni Heiser, of Rapid City, Charlene Stirling and husband Mike, of Black Hawk, Jan Jorgenson of Australia, and Jane Glasgow and husband Wade, of Minneapolis, Minn.; four sons, Clifford "Bud" Shoemaker and wife Kathy, of Black Hawk, Bill Shoemaker and wife Rhonda, of Austin, Texas, Randy Shoemaker and wife Michelle, of Blanchard, Idaho, and Tim Shoemaker, of Worley, Idaho; 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Lila Childress and husband Dennis, of Magnolia, Del., one sister-in-law, Floy Washburn of Spearfish, and one brother, Clifford Washburn and wife Phil of Spearfish.
Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Keith Washburn, and one grandson, Zach Shoemaker.
Memorial services with a reception following will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m., at Canyon Lake Methodist Church in Rapid City. Pastor Bob Ruedebusch will be officiating.

Ingrid Garrett

Ingrid Simon was born on March 27, 1937 at Hirschenhof, Lettland, Latvia, to Edgar and Ver (Holmbach) Simon. She grew up in Latvia and was married to Donald D. Garrett on April 2, 1965 at Cella, Germany. They moved to Canada where he worked in the mining industry. They later moved to the U.S. and in 1974 they moved to the Black Hills where he went to work at Homestake Mine and Ingrid worked at Lambert Lumber and UBC.
Ingrid enjoyed knitting.
Ingrid is survived by one daughter Angela DeVere of Italy; three brothers, Kurt Simon and Harold Simon of Canada and Karl Heinze Simon of Germany; one granddaughter, Stephanie Frasier and one great granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2005 at the Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating.

Elsie Keil

Services of Remembrance for Elsie Keil, 69, a lifetime Belle Fourche area resident will be Friday, Jan. 27, 2006, at 2 p.m., at the Christian Life Center in Belle Fourche with Pastor Paul Howard as officiant.
Elsie died Monday, Jan. 23, 2006, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born Jan. 2, 1937, to John and Elizabeth Keil, in the community of Vale, were she attended elementary school. She was confirmed in the Lutheran church. Later, the family moved to a farm outside of Belle Fourche, where she resided until making her residence at the John Burn Apartments in Belle Fourche.
Elsie worked at the JC Penny and then for many years for the Bank of Belle Fourche, and the Kling's Drive-in Theatre taking tickets. She retired from the bank in 1990. Soon after, she took on the full-time job as caretaker for her father.
Elsie had a joy for the outdoors and enjoyed her garden, lawn, flowers and her cows. She was an excellent cook, specializing in Russian/German cuisine. She was also gifted in sewing, making several wedding gowns, and especially gifted at crocheting, having won a national award for her rendition of DaVinci's "The Last Supper."
Elsie was a loving, generous person. She showered love, gentleness and patience onto her nieces and nephews, acting as their surrogate grandmother. She was a devoted daughter, dedicating her life to caring for her father. She was a loyal friend.
Survivors include her three brothers, Donald (Lane) Keil, of Sturgis, Gene (Mary) Keil, of Belle Fourche, and Ron (Susanne) Keil, of Belle Fourche; three neices, Trisha Pudwell, Lisa Baumberger and Jennifer Keil; three nephews, Brian, Bradley and Steven Keil; two great-nephews and two great nieces; aunts, Frida Shimp and Katheleen Keil; uncle and special friend Jake Reib; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Elsie was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Jeanette, and numerous aunts and uncles.

Richard Wagner

Richard P 'Dick' Wagner 52, of Belle Fourche, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
A Memorial in Dick's name will be established with the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation and the Cancer society.
Rosary will be held Friday, Oct. 21, 2005, at 7 p.m., at the St. Paul's Catholic Church in Belle Fourche. The Memorial Services will be Saturday, Oct. 22, 2005, at 10 a.m., at the church.
Dick was born March 6, 1953, at Sturgis to Raymond and Kathryn Wagner. He graduated from Spearfish High School in 1971.
He married Patricia McNulty in Spearfish in 1974. He worked in the oil fields in Wyoming and in Lead as a heavy equipment operator. He graduated from Black Hills State University in 2003, with a Bachelor of Science degree in technology.
Dick loved fishing, gardening and feeding the birds. He was a great Steeler fan and was always there for his family and friends no matter how hard the task. Dick was loved and will be missed by all.
Survivors include his wife Patty Wagner, of Belle Fourche; daughter Kara Kaminsky and husband Gus; sons Stewart and Jessie; grandson Nicholas; mother Kathryn Wagner, of Spearfish; four sisters, Mary Jo Wolf and husband Frank; Sandy Norman and husband Billy, of Gillette, Wyo.; Gayle Hood and husband Tracy, of Arlington, Wash.; Kathy Stowe and husband Jim, of Pinedale Wyo.; and one brother Kent Wagner and wife Pam, of Lake Stevens, Wash. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are in the care of Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home.
