Richard "Dick" Peter Courchaine

Richard "Dick" Peter Courchaine, 84, of Beulah, Wyo., died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2006, at Ft. Meade VA Medical Facility.
Visitation will be from 4 - 6 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Feb. 27, 2006, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel, with Marvin Massey officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National cemetery, with full military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard. A lunch will follow in Sundance, Wyo., in the courthouse basement.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be given to the Beulah Volunteer Fire Department.
Dick was born Jan. 27, 1922, to Peter and Veronica (Landmesser) Courchaine in Chicago, Ill. He enlisted in the Army in 1943.
Dick served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He received five Bronze Stars, American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon, and WWII Victory Medal Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Dick was discharged from the service in 1945. He was married to Violet French for more than 59 years, and they had four children.
Dick's family would like to express a sincere thank you to the staff of the G Ward at the Ft. Meade VA Medical Facility and Kathy Wood for the care she provided for him at his home.
Dick is survived by his wife Violet Courchaine and one son Rocky Courchaine, both of Beulah, Wyo.; three daughters, Bonnie (John) King, of Sundance, Wyo., Wendy (Jim) Long, of Gillette, Wyo., and Kelly (Doug) Carter, of Sundance, Wyo.; seven grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister Betty Courchaine, of Minneapolis, Minn., and two brothers, Al (Ev) Courchaine, of Swan Valley, Idaho, and Jo (Evelyn) Courchaine, of Abbottsford, Wis.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Phyllis Courchaine.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Bea Welker

Bernice "Bea" Bell Welker, 98, of Spearfish, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17, 2006, at the United Methodist Church in Spearfish, with Pastors Kip Roozen and Perry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at West Lead Masonic cemetery in Lead, with a luncheon to follow at Trinity Methodist Church in Lead. Eastern Star rites will be provided by Queen City Chapter No. 89, of Spearfish.
Bernice Belle (Barrow) Welker, was born Nov. 25, 1907, in McLean, N.D., the fifth of six children to George and Henrietta (Soules) Barrow.
After attending Minot State Teachers College for two years, Bea moved to Lead in 1935, where she taught first grade. She married Nelson F. Welker on June 28, 1936. Together they had five children, Patricia Ann (Bill) Wohlford, of Bettendorf, Iowa; Gail Joan (Bert) Gisselberg, of Sleepy Eye, Minn.; Fred Martin (Linda), of Denver, Colo.; Corinne Mary (Jack) Bridgeforth, of Glorieta, N.M.; and Carl Lynn (Candace), of Englewood, Colo.
Her grandchildren are Kevin (Sandra) Wohlford, Dawn (Leonard) Wohlford-Metallo, Kelly Wohlford, Kris, Michelle, and Heather Gisselberg, Lisa McIntyre, Shauna (Brian) Hill and Kent Hefley. Her great-grandchildren are Jerit and Kirsten Wohlford; Gabe Metallo; Alissa (Gisselberg) Beck, Ryan, Braeden and Colton Gisselberg; Jacob and Jessica Greenwood; Jordon Hill and great-great-granddaughter, Courtney Gail Beck. Her step-grandchildren are Dawn, Glenn, and Dean Dobson, and step-great-grandchildren are Marisa, Adian, Wyatt, Dean, and Marley Dobson.
Bea returned to college at Black Hills State College in 1956, graduating in 1957, with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She continued teaching in Lead, retiring after 25 years. She was a member of Eastern Star, having held many offices including Worthy Matron. She was active in Past Matrons, Retired Teachers, PEO BW Chapter of Spearfish, the Trinity Circle of the Trinity Methodist Church of Lead, and the Joy Circle of the Spearfish United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Lead Methodist Church and retained her membership even after moving to Spearfish. She sang with the Spearfish Senior Choir, retiring only last June.
In July of 1996, Bea sold the family home in Lead and moved to Hickory House in Spearfish, where she lived in her own apartment until October of 2005.
Bea was preceded in death by her husband Nelson, in 1964, her daughter Gail, in 1996, two granddaughters, Michelle, in 1959 and Heather, in 1975 and a grandson, Kris, in 2006.
Bea believed that to have friends, you had to be a friend first. She was a true friend to many. Her smile, the twinkle in her eyes, her generosity and her sense of humor will be remembered and missed.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

James Delbert Riggs

James Delbert Riggs, 93, a lifelong resident of Spearfish, died Friday, Dec. 9, 2005, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Visitation will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, 2005, at Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Kent Stillson officiating, burial will follow at Rose Hill cemetery in Spearfish.
Jim was born March 7, 1912, to Leornard and Mabel Riggs in Spearfish. Jim married Mildred (Rolfsness) Riggs in Bowman, N.D., on Nov. 25, 1938. Jim farmed and ranched in the Centennial Valley and was also a builder of many homes in the Spearfish area. From 1967 until he retired in 1975, he worked as an inspector for the South Dakota Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. Jim was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and a member of the Spearfish Masonic Lodge #18 AF & AM for over 50 years. He was also one of the original founders of the High Plains Heritage Museum.
Jim is survived by his wife Mildred Riggs of Spearfish, two sons, Jerry (Karen) of Alamo, Calif., and Jess (Norma) of Spearfish, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law, Dorothy Riggs of Creswell, Ore.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Clarence and an infant son.
Arrangements have been placed in the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

Margaret Mowery

Mass of Christian Burial for Margaret Mowery, of Gillette, Wyo., will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 20, 2006, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish. Interment will follow in the Pine Slope cemetery in Belle Fourche. Visitation will be from 4 - 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at Stevenson Funeral Home Chapel in Gillette, Wyo. A rosary will be said at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at the St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Spearfish.
Margaret Mowery, age 85, passed away of natural causes on Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Pioneer Manor Nursing Home.
Margaret Cecilia Mowery, known to her family and friends as Marge, was born Oct. 31, 1920, in Lead, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Borg) Nevin. She attended St. Patrick's grade school in Lead, and graduated from Lead High School in 1939. After moving to Denver, Colo., and working for the government during WWII, she returned to Lead in the late 1940s. On Oct. 5, 1950, she was united in marriage to Truman Mowery in Lead. They made their home on Truman's ranch north of Aladdin, Wyo., until 1989, when due to ill health they moved to Spearfish. In October of 2003 Mrs. Mowery moved to Gillette, Wyo., to be near her daughter and reside in Pioneer Manor Nursing Home. Margaret enjoyed cross stitching, word puzzles, and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and attending all of their activities, never missing a birthday or anything that involved them. Along with her children, her grandkids were the love of her life. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Spearfish.
Margaret will be missed by her daughter, Mary Kay (Dennis) Lundvall, of Gillette, Wyoming; daughter-in-law, Tracey Mowery, of New Underwood; three granddaughters, Mandi and Misti Mowery and Shonna K. Lundvall; two grandsons, Shilo and Shay Lundvall; sister-in-law, Colleen Nevin, of Lead; several nieces, nephews and cousins, along with a multitude of friends.
Mrs. Mowrey was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Steven Mowrey; infant granddaughter, Kelli Jo Mowrey; six sisters; and one brother.
Memorials may be made to the Campbell County Healthcare Foundation Hospice of Campbell County Memorial Hospital. Condolences and memorials may be sent in Marge's name in care of Stevenson Funeral Home 210 W. 5th St., Gillette, WY 82716.

Cindy Newell

Cindy Newell was born Oct. 31, 1955, in Ft. Morgan, Colo.
She moved to Greeley, Colo., in 1956 and graduated from Greeley Central High School in 1972. She received several degrees from San Francisco University. She married William (Bill) Newell in 1980, and they were married for 26 years. They divorced in 2003 and Cindy relocated to Deadwood in 2002.
She is survived by her mother, Marge Pendo, of Sturgis; two sisters, Judy Byrum, of Sturgis and Cheri Mayeda, of Gilcrest, Colo.; adopted brother and lifetime friend from California, Phil Flinders and Rick Ahl, of Deadwood; two nephews; three nieces; 11 great nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by two grandfathers; two grandmothers; and her father, Loren Burke.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the Lead-Deadwood Funeral Chapel in Lead. Inurnment followed at Oak Ridge cemetery in Deadwood. A memorial has been established and may be sent to the Aldinger Funeral Home, 611 Dahl Rd., Spearfish, SD 57783.
Cindy was a vivacious soul. She was an avid reader and huge animal lover. We will miss her craziness and her wonderful smile. We love you and will always have you in our hearts.

Ruth H. Retzer

Ruth H. Retzer, 90, of Spearfish, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at Spearfish Regional Hospital.
Ruth is survived by her four children, Aldene (Leonard) Steele, of Spearfish, Gerald (Betty) Lund, of Wendell, Idaho, John (Evelyn) Lund, of McCall, Idaho, and DeLain Willis, of Chandler, Ariz.
Arrangements are pending with Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel of Spearfish.

John Salaza

John Salazar, 60, passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2006, in Spearfish.
Visitation will be today from noon - 9 p.m., and Saturday, April 22, 2006, one hour prior services at Kinkade Funeral Chapel in Sturgis.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 22, 2006, at 5 p.m., with Pastor Mark Fuhr officiating.
John was born Oct. 7, 1945, in Lavate, Colo., to Louis and Delcie (Martinez) Salazar. He came to central South Dakota following his graduation from Eagle Valley High School in 1963. He was married to Carol Callihan in 1966, in Murdo, where they lived until 1970 when they moved to Spearfish. In 1974, the family moved to Whitewood. John and Carol had five children and were divorced in 1983.
John and Dana Taylor of Sundance, Wyo., were married in 1984. To this union, two children were born.
John's greatest loves were gardening, fishing, cooking, and being with his grandchildren. His life was spent at a variety of jobs, but working in the woods his favorite occupation.
Survivors include his mother, Delcie Salazar, of Gypsum, Colo.; his daughters and sons-in-law, Michelle and Randy Draine, of Sturgis, Edyth and Don Jennings, of Presho, Patty and David Colee, of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Sarah and George Meisner, of Sundance, Wyo.; his sons, David Salazar, of Highlands Ranch Colo., Michael and daughter-in-law, Alicia Salazar, of Sturgis, and Donald Salazar, of Sturgis; sisters and brothers, Connie Fischer, of McLaughlin, Fred Salazar, Gloria Serna, Eileen Valdez, Marie Jobbert, Charlotte Norvell, Pat Salazar, and Floyd Salazar, all of Colorado; 11 grandchildren, Danielle, Justice, Ben, Brooke, Makayla, Rebecca, Nick, Abbey, Emily, Nathan, and Marcus; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Louis; brothers, Robert and Anthony; sister, Patricia; and his brothers-in-law, LeRoy Fischer and Jimmy Serna.
Those left behind will miss him dearly and remember him for his sense of humor.
A memorial has been established.

Sheldon M. Konstant

Sheldon M. Konstant, age 67, of Milbank died on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in the Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center, Phoenix, Ariz.
Family members are asked to meet in the church fellowship hall by 10 a.m. Tuesday to attend services. The pianist will be Vonnie Mueller. The soloist will be August Peterson accompanied by Vicki Strege. The violinists will be his granddaughters, Emma, Julia, and Alexis Konstant. The Emanuel Choir will present special music. His grandson Noah Mann will be the cross-bearer.
Visitation will be at the Emanuel-Patterson Funeral Home in Milbank on Monday from 5-7 p.m. and in the church Tuesday one hour before services. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren, extended family members, and friends. Active pallbearers will be his five sons, Marlin, Michael, Dr. Gary, Jason, and Chad Konstant, his grandson Stuart Konstant, and his two sons-in-law, Jeff Mann and Scott Dagel. Burial will be in the Milbank City cemetery.
Shelly was born on Feb. 6, 1936, in Milbank, , the son of Martin and Hilda (de Vries) Konstant. He went to work at Eli's Grocery in Milbank at the age of 11 as a helper and clerk. Shelly graduated from Milbank High School in 1954. Following graduation, he went to work for the Flanery Sausage Company in Milbank. Shelly was united in marriage to Karen Dahlgren on Aug. 17, 1957, at the Tabor Lutheran Church in Strandburg, S.D.
Following marriage, the couple resided in Milbank until 1958. They moved to Mobridge, when he became a salesman for the company. They lived in Huron, from 1964-66. The couple moved to Milbank in 1966 where Shelly continued to work for Flanery's. In 1983 he made a career change. Shelly became a financial advisor for IDS (American Express) and sold investments for seventeen years. He retired in March 2000.
Shelly was an active member of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Milbank. Sheldon was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, and was known for cooking excellent meals on his Weber Grill.
Survivors include five sons and three daughters-in-law, Marlin and Jean, Spearfish, ; Michael and Susan, Spearfish; Dr. Gary and Mary Beth, Watertown, ; Jason, Spearfish; and Chad, of Milbank; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sheryl and Jeff Mann, Montevideo, Minn., and Karla and Scott Dagel, Watertown; 15 grandchildren: Alexis, Shelby, Jeran, Keri, Stuart, Emma, Julia, and Sam Konstant; Noah and Marissa Mann; and Sarah, Jackson, Anna Katherine, Hattie May, and Joseph Scott Dagel; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Mrs. Evonna Bear, Stockholm, and Arlys and Ervin Thompson, Ortonville, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Joyce Schultz, Ortonville, Minn., and Audrey Ehnes, Denver, Colo.; two brothers-in-law and their spouses, Loren and Sharon Dahlgren, Strandburg, and John and Judy Dahlgren, Ft. Collins, Colo.; and many nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife Karen on June 28, 2002, two brothers-in-law, Alden "Butch" Bear and Ted Dahlgren, and two nephews, Mark Schultz and Steve Bear, preceded Shelly in death.

Jack Keckler

Jack Keckler, 59 of Eagle Butte passed away Feb. 13, 2004 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Jack had lost a two-year battle with cancer. He courageously took four cycles of different chemotherapy treatments with determination, strength and a positive attitude, assuring family and friends that "There's nothing wrong with me!"
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday at the Cheyenne-Eagle Butte School Auditorium in Eagle Butte with Rev Wayne Olson officiating. Burial will be in the United Eagle Butte cemetery under the direction of the Luce Funeral Home of Eagle Butte. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m., Wednesday at the Congregational Church in Eagle Butte. Numerous trucking friends will give a semi truck escort, leading Jack to his final resting place at the Eagle Butte cemetery.
Jack was born, Nov. 23, 1944 in Mobridge, S.D., the third child of Russell and Alvina (Eitenier) Keckler. He grew up on the family homestead attending grade school at the Guede School, south of Eagle Butte and attending C-EB High School, graduating in 1962. Following graduation, Jack worked for Mike Schatz.
On November 12, 1964 he married Patti Jo Thompson at Pipestone, Minn. They made their home in Eagle Butte where Jack worked at the Little Dakota Truck Stop. In 1965, their daughter Billie Jo was born. Jack then took a job with Stanley Johnson Construction, laying curb and gutter in Evanston, Wyo. and the growing Black Hills area.
Upon settling back in Eagle Butte, Jack began working for John and Murphy Holloway. In 1972, a son, J.R., was born. At this time Jack began his independent trucking business and built his cattle herd and ranching operation, which he continued until his untimely death. Jack also worked construction with Duane Varney and David Ganje, building many structures in the area. Since 1992 Jack had been working with his son J.R. as partners in the trucking and ranching business.
Jack will be remembered as a strong, hardworking, honest and talented man. Jack treated every customer equally and they became his extended family. Jack's grandchildren brought him much joy and he enjoyed teaching them about the animals and rural life. It is true: The candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long.
Jack is survived by his family; wife, Patti, daughter, Billie Jo (Todd) Bakeberg and grandchildren Janesa and Jacksyn, Spearfish, and son, J.R., Eagle Butte. He is also survived by his four siblings; Jerry (Jessie) Keckler and Joyce (Jerry) Collins of Eagle Butte, Linda Keckler, New Home, Texas, and Ronnie (Nell) Keckler, Lubbock, Texas, numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Alvina.
Special music will be provided by Susie Payne, who will be accompanied by Barb Berndt.
Casketbearers will be; Doug Maher, Jim Wright, Kirby Peterson, Jace Birkland, Kenny Gesinger, Dale Lesmiester, Tim Bollinger, Tony Murray and Jeremy Hertel - currently serving our country in Iraq.
Ushers will be Oren Lesmeister, Jim Peterson, Harley Morgan, Cody Jewett, and Jamie Murray.
Honorary Pallbearers will be: Frank and Shirley Halligan, John and Betty Lou Kost, Todd and Curt Mortenson, Ace and Karen Ingram, Les Lindscov, Bernie and Dorthy Tibbs, John Schumacher, Eric and Tim Thomas, JJ Mortenson, Perry and Shannon Depoy, Steve Locken, Cody Briggs, Sam Curtis, Lennie Shillingstad, Dick Adamski, Junior and Rhea Smith, Ray and Elaine Brehmer, Edwin Yost, Martha and Calvin Clavel, Karen and Leroy Vrooman, Avin and Joann Martin, Fred and Marie Kost, Bob and Faye Butler, Vernie Martin, Jess and Dale Brewer, Ed Dupris, Donnie and Doyle Simon, Marty and Jeanne Burress, Dean Swift, Kelly Smith, Vic Hollenbeck, Shane Laurenz, Jim Selby, Jeff Weber, Jerry Collins, Ede Claymore, Dick and Dean Schrempp, John and Bob Eulburg, Steve and Susie Payne, Leland Schoon, Glenn Gunville, and Dr. David Bartch.
