Irvin Muntefering, 88
August 15, 1916 - April 30, 2005
Funeral services and burial for Irvin J. Muntefering were held May 3, 2005, at SS Peter and Paul Church and Catholic Cemetery, Dimock.
Irvin J. Muntefering was born to John and Bertha (Hohn) Muntefering on August 15, 1916, in rural Dimock. He attended country school and later parochial school at SS Peter and Paul Catholic School. After schooling, he farmed with his father on the family farm.
He was united in marriage with Leona Koster on February 6, 1939, at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Churchi n Dimock. The couple farmed west of Dimock and he also continued to help on the family farm until March of 1947. The couple then moved onto the Muntefering family farm and he continued to farm until 1992. After retiring, they made their home in Mitchell.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was a former member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church and Moose Lodge.
He died April 30 at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital, Mitchell, at the age of 88 years.
He is survived by his wife, Leona, Mitchell; four children, Darlene Branaugh and husband, Richard, Mission hill, William J. Muntefering and wife, Dorothy, Ethan, Cheryl Stirling and husband, Tom, Ethan, and Charlene Moon and husband, Doug, Martell, Neb.; 10 gradnchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Arlo Jones, 80
June 2, 1925 - November 16, 2005
Funeral services for L. Arlo Jones were held Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005, at 2 p.m., at Salem United Church of Christ, Parkston, with the Rev. Elmo Herman officiating. Music was furnished by Nicole Degen and Scott Jones, soloists, and Mary Tiede, organist.
Interment was made in the Parkston Protestant Cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Honorary casketbearers were Mr. and Mrs. George Shelly, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Pries, and Mr. and Mrs. Guertis Leischner. Casketbearers were Spencer Degen, Seth Jones, Scott Jones, Jared Degen, Zach Anderson, and Brad Jones.
Arlo Jones was born June 2, 1925, to Owen and Margaret (Davies) Jones at Cresbard. He attended school at Cresbard, graduating from Cresbard High School in 1943. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during World War II as a tailgunner in a B-24 Liberator in the 392nd bomb group. Upon his discharge, he enrolled at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen and graduated in 1949.
He was united in marriage to June Wolf on August 20, 1947. Together they moved to Parkston where they both taught in the Parkston school system. In 1954, he obtained his masters degree from Northern and moved to Ree Heights where he was superintendent for a year before moving back to Parkston where he became superintendent. Later, he became employed by Banker’s Life Insurance Group and lived briefly in Marshall, Minn., Roseville, Minn., and Yankton. In 1964, they moved back to Parkston to begin working for Farmers State Bank, where he worked until his retirement in 1989.
He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, Masons and the El Riad Shrine of Sioux Falls.
He died Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Avera Bormann Manor, Parkston, at the age of 80 years.
He is survived by his wife, June, Parkston; two children, Julie Degen and husband, James, Parkston, and Jeff Jones and wife, Amy, Benson, Minn.; four grandchildren, Spencer Degen and wife, Becky, Brookings, Nicole Degen and fiancee, Zach, Yankton, Jared Degen, Parkston, and Seth Jones, Minneapolis, Minn.; and one brother, Floyd Jones, Pierre.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John and Boyd Jones; and a sister, Marvel Smith.

Evan Uhrich, 86
September 6, 1918 - August 27, 2005
Funeral services for Evan Warren Uhrich were held Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at 1 p.m., at Skyline Memorial Chapel, with Pastor Lorenz Schultz officiating. Richard Uhrich provided the eulogy. Music was furnished by Dennis Young, soloist.
Interment was made in the Skyline Memorial Gardens with Skyline in charge of arrangements. Honorary casketbearers were Kevin Krautscheid and Stephanie Krautscheid. Casketbearers were Grant Young, Brenda Hinman, Shannon Pollock, Jeff Hinman, Sheila Peckham, and Kristine Krautscheid.
Evan was born September 6, 1918, in Milltown. He moved to Portland in 1940 and worked in the shipyards during World War II. He later lived in Hillsboro and Beaverton. He was a fireman for the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1941, he married Doris Bullington.
He died August 27, of complications of pneumonia at the age of 86 years.
Survivors include his wife; son, Richard; daughters, Janet Young and Dottie Hinman; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert Uhrich, Parkston, and Maurice Uhrich, Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Frank Caylor, Mitchell; and nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers, and two sisters.

Agnes O’Donnell, 85
May 24, 1920 - November 9, 2005
Funeral services for Agnes Genevieve O’Donnell were held Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Parkston, with Fr. Bob Krantz officiating. Music was furnished by the Sacred Heart Parish Choir and Bonna McGregor, organist.
Interment was made in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, with Fr. William Zandri officiating. Koehn Bros. Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Kevin Braley, Parker Hale, Pat O’Donnell, Nick Rabern, Chris Braley, Colter Hale, Scott Rabern, and Zach Rabern.
Agnes Genevieve O’Donnell was born May 24, 1920, to Charles and Margaret (Carroll) Friman at Seneca. At a young age, “Gen” moved with her family to Sioux Falls where she attended and graduated from Washington High School and later Nettleton Commercial College.
She was united in marriage to John O’Donnell on July 31, 1943, at Redlands, Calif. Together they lived in California and Sioux Falls until 1945 when they made their home in Lemmon. They moved back to Sioux Falls in 1992. John died July 24, 1998. Gen moved to Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston in 2003.
She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Altar Society in Lemmon and St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Sioux Falls.
She died Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston at the age of 85 years.
She is survived by seven children, Diane Braley and husband, Mike, Parkston, Patricia Steuck and husband, Roger, Lexington, Ky., Tim O’Donnell and wife, Pat, Olympia, Wash., Tom O’Donnell, Minneapolis, Minn., John O’Donnell and wife, Rosie, San Antonio, Texas, Mary Beth Hale and husband, Brent, Fraser, Colo., and Bill O’Donnell and wife, Melissa, Minneapolis; three sisters, Margaret Parker, San Luis Obispo, Calif., Mabel Sagouspe, Fremont, Calif., and Anne Friman, Merced, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; two brothers; and a sister.

Ruben Bertsch, 83
November 7, 1922 - November 12, 2005
Funeral services for Ruben H. Bertsch were held Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005, at 2 p.m., at Grace United Methodist Church, Piedmont, with Pastor Steven Trefz officiating.
Interment was made in the Black Hills National Cemetery, near Stur-gis, with military honors by the Piedmont Post #311 Honor Guard. Serenity Springs Funeral Chapel, Rapid City, was in charge of arrangements.
Ruben was born November 7, 1922, on a farm northwest of Olivet to Pauline (Bietz) and Fred Bertsch. He attended a country school. At age 23 he was called for military duty with the U.S. Naval Reserves.
He married Frances Leischner on September 1, 1946. They farmed for 30 years at Parkston before moving to rural Piedmont. He then worked as a farm equipment mechanic until his retirement in 1994.
He was a member of Germans from Russia Club, Piedmont Legion Post #311, Piedmont Senior Center and Sturgis Snowmobile Club.
He died Saturday, Nov. 12, at his home. He attained the age of 83 years.
He is survived by his wife, Frances of 59 years; six children, Veronica (Rick) Swanson, Bevent, Wis., Dianna Bertsch, Rapid City, Brenda Bertsch, Congress, Ariz., Tena (Allan) Schauer, Rapid City, Wayne (Patty) Bertsch, Piedmont, and Steven (Julie) Bertsch, Piedmont; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Isaiah and Mason Thaler
November 12, 2005 - November 12, 2005
Isaiah Ryan Thaler and Mason Keegan Thaler, infant twin sons of Zachary and Jennifer (Roth) Thaler, Avon, were born and died on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.
Private funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., at Crosby-Jaeger Funeral Home, Wagner. Burial was made in the St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, rural Dante.
They are survived by their parents; paternal grandparents, Diane Thaler, and Rick and Cheryl Thaler, all of Wagner; maternal grandparents, Tim Roth, Mitchell, and Scott and Julie Alderink, Wagner; great-grandparents, Vivian Thaler, Wagner, Joan Roth, Parkston, Paul and Deveta Thury, Parkston, and the Rev. Paul and Doris Alderink, Holland, Mo.; great-great-grandmother, Mary Ann Thury, Parkston; and many aunts and uncles.

Beatha (Reiner) Vogt, 97
April 28, 1908 - December 12, 2005
Funeral services for Beatha E. Vogt were held Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at 2 p.m., at Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, with the Rev. Constanze Hagmaier officiating. Music was furnished by Marlene Wuertzer, organist.
Interment was made in the Parkston Protestant Cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Jay Vogt, Kenneth Vogt, Steve Rath, Jessica Vogt, Daniel Park, and Todd Rath.
Bea was born on a farm outside of Tripp April 28, 1908, to Fred and Elizabeth Reiner. She was raised there with her eight siblings.
She married William Vogt on July 21, 1931. The couple spent a brief period in California where she worked as a florist. They spent much of their life in Parkston.
Bea worked at what is now Avera St. Benedict Health Center for 17 years as a nurses’ aide.
She died December 12. She attained the age of 97 years.
She is survived by her son, Kenneth; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings; her husband, William; and daughter, Betty.

Helen (Yoch) Benson, 93
September 4, 1912 - December 15, 2005
Funeral services for Helen Anena Benson were held Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., at Memorial Baptist Church, Parkston, with the Rev. Marty Schmidt officiating. Music was furnished by Carol Guthmiller, organist.
Interment was made in the Parkston Protestant Cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Don Hoffman, Willard Zeeb, Duane Yoch, Bill Sudbeck, Orville Yoch, Richard Yoch, and Lewis Yoch.
Helen Benson was born September 4, 1912, on Charles and Edna (Bobzien) Yoch at Newhall, Iowa. At a young age, she was baptized and confirmed in the Missouri Lutheran faith. She started school at Newhall at the age of five. After two years, her family moved to Vinton, Iowa, where she attended two different schools before moving to Delmont where she graduated from the eighth grade. The family moved to Parkston where she attended and graduated from Parkston High School in 1928.
She was united in marriage on March 8, 1932, to Opie Benson in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls by Rev. Charles Glenn. They belonged to the Parkston Rifle Club and National Rifle Association until ammunition was recalled during World War II. She ranked Sharpshooter and was on the five person team for Parkston.
Together they farmed east of Parkston for 14 years at which time they took over the daily operations and management of Island Park at Milltown.
In January of 1960 and for the next 12 years, she worked in the Hutchinson County Equalization Office. She was later elected to the office of Hutchinson County Register of Deeds, finally retiring at the age of 66 after 18 years in office.
Through the years, she wrote spiritual Christian poetry, which she finally had copyrighted and made into a booklet by the name “God’s Promises”. Opie died on March 25, 1998.
She became a resident of Avera Bormann Manor in 1997 when she was diagnosed with advancing Alzheimer’s disease.
She died Thursday, Dec. 15, at Avera Bormann Manor in Parkston at the age of 93 years.
She is survived by four nephews, Duane, Richard, Orville and Lewis Yoch; six nieces, Sherry Fischer, Darlene O’Brian, Lorraine Vest, Luella Sparks, Gayle Cimmeron and Deborah Briggs, and special friends, Don and Phyllis Hoffman and Willard and Donna Zeeb.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers, Orville and Charles Yoch.

Selma Jendersee, 90
November 8, 1915 - January 4, 2006
Funeral services for Selma Jendersee were held Saturday, Jan. 7, 2006, at 2 p.m., at St. John Lutheran Church, rural Dimock, with the Rev. David Winterfeldt officiating. Music was furnished by the St. John Choir and Doris Herbst, organist.
Interment was made in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, rural Dimock, with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Honorary casket-bearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Casketbearers were Jeff Murtha, Steve Jendersee, John Zimmerman, Ryan Murtha, Jordan Jendersee, Glen Moke, and Craig Perry.
Selma Jendersee was born November 8, 1915, to Herman and Amelia (Goldammer) Moke on the family farm near Hillside in Douglas County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. John Lutheran Church and later attended country school through the eighth grade in Douglas County.
On February 16, 1938, she was united in marriage to Elmer Jendersee at St. John Lutheran Church at Hillside. Together they farmed in Davison County until 1979 when they moved into Parkston.
She was a member of the Friendship Circle Extension Club, WELCA, and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She died Wednesday, Jan. 4, at Avera St. Benedict Hospital, Parkston, at the age of 90 years.
She is survived by three children, Derald Jendersee and wife, Shirley, Cockeysville, Md., Ronald Jendersee and wife, Marlene, Mt. Vernon, Lois Perry and husband, Bill, Franklin, N.C.; four grandchildren, Cathy Murtha and husband, Jeff, Parkston, Steve Jendersee and wife, LeAnn, Mitchell, Sandy Zimmerman and husband, John, Pierre, and Craig Perry and wife, Mandy, Franklin, N.C.; five step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Alma Jendersee, Austin, Minn.; two brothers, Otto Moke and wife, Elaine, Parkston, and Clarence Moke and wife, Marjean, Parkston; four sisters-in-law, Rosie Plamp, White Lake, Pearl Neugebauer, Parkston, Sally Jendersee, Parkston, and Irene Moke, Mitchell; and one brother-in-law, Lawrence Jendersee, Mt. Vernon.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; a step-grandchild; two sisters, Minnie Gerlach and Alvina Titze; two brothers, Leonard and Norbert Moke; a sister-in-law; and six brothers-in-law.

Harvey Bialas, 72
July 19, 1933 - January 22, 2006
Funeral services for Harvey Louis Bialas were held Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006, at 10:30 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church, Parkston, with the Rev. Kenneth Soyk officiating. Music was furnished by the Faith Lutheran Choir and Bev Scheetz, organist.
Interment was made in the Parkston Protestant Cemetery with Koehn Bros. Funeral Home, Parkston, in charge of arrangements. Casketbearers were Joel Bialas, Joshua Bialas, Kip Baiar, Glen Bialas, Steve Peters, and Randy Baiar.
Harvey Louis Bialas was born on July 19, 1933, in Washington Township, Douglas County, to Fritz and Hilda (Gerlach) Bialas. He was baptized on August 8, 1933, by Rev. Paul Hempel at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Dimock and confirmed there on June 27, 1945 by Rev. John DeWald.
He entered the U.S. Army on September 22, 1953, and returned to civilian life on September 21, 1955, after serving two years.
On December 8, 1956, he married Berniece Fischer in Parkston. They began farming in March of 1957. They farmed for 37 years until retiring on August 25, 1994, when they moved into Parkston.
He served nine years on the Cross Plains Township Board as well as many years on the B-Y Water board.
He became a member of Faith Lutheran Church in October of 1957. He served as the financial secretary and elder for the church for many years.
He died on Sunday, Jan. 22, at Avera Bormann Manor, Parkston, at the age of 72 years.
He is survived by his wife, Berniece, Parkston; two daughters, Mitzi Vreugdenhil and husband, Del, Parkston, and Michelle Lee and husband, Kirk, Sioux Falls; five grandchildren, Justin Vreugdenhil and wife, Christine, Ardmore, Okla., Dawn Vreugdenhil, Tea, Austin and Phil Vreugdenhil, both of Parkston; and Ashlyn Lee, Sioux Falls; eight brothers, Ivan, Floyd, Willard, Larry, DuWayne, and Jim, all of Parkston, and Lambert and Lawrence of Dimock; and three sisters, Lorraine Hetland, Belvidere, Ill., JoAnn Seeman, Sioux Falls, and Jean Buenning, Conifer, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son and daughter.
