Janie Ruth Mullican

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Janie Ruth Mullican, 67, of Algood, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Brotherton cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. today, Friday, July 18, and from 7 a.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mullican died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born March 9, 1941, in Putnam County to the late Robert and Anna Swallows Lane.

Mrs. Mullican was a member of Brotherton Missionary Baptist Church.

Her family included her husband, Hillery Mullican of Algood; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Rebecca Gay Lane of Cookeville; a sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Jasper Birdwell of Cookeville; a special aunt, Della Swallows of Cookeville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bro. Danny Lane will officiate at the services.

Nancy Macke

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Nancy Jane Macke, 81, of Cookeville, will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, from the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Homes and Cremation Services. Burial will be at a later date in Marshall, Ill.

The family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until time of services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Macke died today, Friday, July 18, 2008, in Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Marshall to the late Charles Garr and Nancy Esther Hurst Claypool.

Mrs. Macke was a homemaker.

Her family includes her husband, Everett H. Macke of Cookeville (whom she married March 20, 1949, in Marshall); four sons and two daughters-in-law, Mike Macke of Indianapolis, Ind., Bill and Lisa Macke of Lebanon and Charlie and Karen Macke and Greg Macke, all of Cookeville; 10 grandchildren, Chris, Scott, Adam and wife Desiree, Hannah, Jamie, Bobby, Sarah, Liam, Andy and Tori.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sandra Lynn Macke; and two brothers, James Claypool and Charles G. Claypool Jr.

Rev. Roger Cooper will officiate at the services.

Martha Jane Padgett

Martha Jane Padgett

LIVINGSTON -- Funeral services for Martha Jane Padgett, 60, of Monroe, were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, from the chapel of Hall Funeral Home in Livingston. Burial was in Sylvester Robbins cemetery.

Ms. Padgett died Thursday, July 17, 2008, in Livingston Regional Hospital.

Lena Christine Montgomery

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Lena Christine Montgomery, 87, of Cookeville, will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home with Bro. Clarence Deloach officiating. Burial will be in Crestlawn cemetery.

Mrs. Montgomery was born in Cookeville and was the daughter of Curtis and Martha Brown Bumbalough. She passed away Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Maury Regional Hospital in Columbia.

After graduating from Central High School in Cookeville, Christine moved to Detroit, Mich., where she met and married Robert (Bob) Walden in 1944. For a number of years, she was a career hair stylist for the J.L. Hudson Company in Detroit.

Christine and Bob had three daughters and one son. A few years after Bob's death in 1984, Christine became reacquainted with an old high school friend, Elmer Montgomery, and they were married in 1992. They soon relocated to Cookeville where they lived until Elmer passed away in 2007. Christine then moved to Columbia to be closer to her children.

Christine was a member of Willow Avenue Church of Christ in Cookeville. She was a person of great integrity and took pride in her family. Her love for her children and grandchildren was paramount and she instilled in them the virtues of striving for the best in what they do. Along with family gatherings, Christine also enjoyed flower gardening and traveling.

Surviving family members include children, Shirley Hindbaugh and her husband Ralph of Redford, Mich., Sandra Walden of Baytown, Texas, James Walden, and Patricia Burton and her husband Wilson of Columbia; grandchildren, Michael Villanueva, Lisa Brown, John and Christopher Burton and Jessica and Robert Walden; great-grandchildren, Mercedes Burton and Melissa Calaway; sister, Geneva Allen of Atlanta, Ga.; and sisters-in-law, Elvira Bumbalough and Rozelle Cole of Cookeville; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands, Christine was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Curtis D. Bumbalough of Cookeville.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. until time for services at the funeral home.

Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Buford Lee Smith

CELINA -- Funeral services for Buford Lee Smith, 88, of Moss, will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Hall Funeral Home.

Family will receive friends today, Sunday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m.-10 p.m., and again Monday, Sept. 8, from 8 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Monroe County Medical Center.

Kathleen Ann Gardner

COOKEVILLE -- Kathleen Ann Gardner, 52, of Cookeville, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

The family has chosen cremation. No services are planned at this time

Mrs. Gardner was born Oct. 15, 1955, in Camden, N.J., to Isabelle Margaret Beal and the late Michael Norman Flynn.

Her family includes two daughters and a son-in-law, Christina L. Gardner and Christopher Shiflett of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Rosemary J. Gardner of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Eric T. Gardner and fiancee Lisa Leone of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Diane M. and Eddy Haynes of Cookeville and Monica J. and Thor Urness of Nashville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Michael D. and Kathy Flynn of Lititz, Pa., Timothy J. and Angela Flynn of Brentwood, and Richard J. and Amy Flynn of Jacksonville, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles.

Memorial donations may be made to Lazarus House Hospice, 260 W. 5th St., Cookeville, TN 38501.

Crest Lawn Funeral Home-Cremation Center is in charge of arrangements.

Herby Hawkins

GAINESBORO -- Funeral services for Herby Hawkins, 51, of the Nameless community of Jackson County, will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 1 p.m. at Anderson-Upper Cumberland Funeral Home in Gainesboro.

Burial will be in Granville cemetery.

Family will receive friends today, Sunday, Sept. 7, from 1-9 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Mr. Hawkins died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at his residence.

He was born May 30, 1957, in Jackson County to the late Arville and Thelma Lawson Hawkins.

Mr. Hawkins was a zinc miner. He was a member of Faith Chapel Church.

His family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Misty Lambert and Austin Bateman of Paris; a special friend, Mary Nesbitt of Dixon Springs; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Tina and Gary Rittenberry of Cookeville and Jerrie and Stanley Duke of the Nameless community of Jackson County; a niece, Melissa Walker; a nephew, Kevin Hawkins; a special cousin, Darlene Neal and husband Gerald; and other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hawkins was preceded in death by a brother, Billy Howard Hawkins.

Pastor Steve Warren will officiate the services.

Lydia T. Long

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Lydia T. Long, 62, of Mount Juliet, will be held Monday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. at Crest Lawn Funeral Home in Cookeville.

Burial will be in Crest Lawn Memorial cemetery.

Family will receive friends today, Sunday, Sept. 7, from 1-8 p.m. and Monday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Mrs. Long died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at the Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

She was born Aug. 31, 1946, in Silver Point to David P. Thomas and the late Alene Maxwell Thomas.

Mrs. Long worked as an insurance policy analyst for 42 years with several companies, including Union Standard Insurance Co., L.W. Legg Insurance Co., SafeCo Insurance, Royal Globe, Grange, CNA Insurance and Harleyville Insurance. She was a member of the Center Chapel Church of Christ in Mt. Juliet. Mrs. Long was a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother and sister.

In addition to her father, her family includes her husband, Fred H. Long of Mt. Juliet; a daughter and son-in-law, Tonya Gayle and Wesley Robinson of Cookeville; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin Paul and DeDe Long of Mt. Juliet; a sister, Yvonne Ballard of Algood; two brothers, Ted Mackie Thomas of Nashville and Tim Taylor Thomas of Cookeville; a granddaughter, Keri Anne Long of Mt. Juliet; a grandson, Tanner Alan Long of Mt. Juliet; a step-granddaughter, Emily Robinson of Murfreesboro; a step-grandson, Cody Robinson of Murfreesboro; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial donations may be made to her grandchildren's college scholarship fund by contacting the funeral home.

Donetta Faye Schmidt

COOKEVILLE -- Funeral services for Donetta Faye Schmidt, 67, of Gonzales, La., and formerly of Cookeville, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 9, at 10 a.m. from the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Crest Lawn cemetery.

Family will receive friends Monday, Sept. 8, from 5-8 p.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.

Ms. Schmidt died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, in Gonzales.

She was born Aug. 7, 1941, in Jackson County to the late Ruth Ragland and Donell McBroom.

Ms. Schmidt was a member of Willow Avenue Church of Christ. She worked at Plateau Mental Health Center for 30 years and retired in 2002 as a physician's clerical assistant. Ms. Schmidt was well-known for her love a of family and friends, and they were always welcomed in her home. She enjoyed flower gardening and music, was an excellent cook and had an unforgettable laugh.

Her family includes a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Faron Freeman of Gonzales; a son, Christopher Adams of Pikeville; a brother, Dwain McBroom of Cookeville; four grandchildren, Briana Norrod of Cookeville, Nicole Quirk, Shannon Cobb and Chase Freeman, all of Gonzales; and five great-grandchildren.

Bro. Johnny Fox will officiate the services.
