JOE D. MCCLURE
1913-2008
MCKENZIE - Joe David McClure died July 16, 2008 at Lakeside Retirement Center of natural causes. He was born the last of eight children on September 18, 1913 to Dave and Emma McClure, both deceased. He was 94 years old.
Funeral services were Sunday, July 20 at McKenzie First United Methodist Church with Reverend Scott Alford officiating. Brummitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
McClure completed his early education at McTyeire School (McKenzie) and entered Bethel College, where he received a B.S. Degree in 1936. He received his M.S. Degree in Agriculture from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1938. He taught vocational agriculture at Rives, Tennessee and Junction City, Oregon for 15 years. He met his wife, Ernestine Diggs at Rives, where she was also a teacher. She ended her teaching career at McKenzie Elementary School. She preceded him in death in July 2007 after 67 years of marriage.
He is survived by two sons, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Son Larry ( born in 1941 in Union City, Tennessee) lives in Tualatin, Oregon and son, David (born in 1948 in Eugene, Oregon) lives in Kingwood, Texas.
As a young adult, he enjoyed flying his own airplane. During World War II he was an instructor of Air Force pilot trainees at bases in Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi and Texas. Over a ten-year period in these states he taught courses in weather, aircraft engines and theory of flight. He spent 1959-1962 at Boeing in Seattle, Washington training jet aircraft pilots and engineers in the use of high altitude oxygen, ejection seats and parachutes. A Time magazine article in 1961 described his role in early space flight research.
Impatient with commuting in a large city and yearning to teach again, in 1962 he, Ernestine, and son David moved to Kwajalein, a remote U.S. Army missile site in the Marshall Islands, South Pacific, where he was taught chemistry and biology at the K-12 school. After three years, he returned to McKenzie where for the next 14 years he was student services administrator at the McKenzie Area State Technical School until retirement in 1978.
He and Ernestine visited all 50 states and traveled overseas to Europe, Asia, Mexico, Central America, North Africa, the Caribbean, and Turkey.
In retirement, he continued to teach local adult groups on a variety of history and science topics and for a local adult literacy program. He occasionally wrote for The McKenzie Banner about his years growing up in McKenzie and the couple's world travels. Known for his vegetable and fruit gardening skills, friends and relatives in and beyond McKenzie were grateful recipients of his abundant harvests.
Joe's siblings lived long lives primarily in the Carroll County area. His siblings included brothers, Fonnie, John, and Robert and sisters, Mae, Bessie, Cecil, and Ruth. Joe was born when the McClure family lived in the Hinkledale community outside McKenzie. They later moved to Walnut Street in 1917.
Joe and Ernestine built and remodeled several houses during the cross-country moves. At their McKenzie home, they particularly enjoyed visits of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who learned to fix things, dig potatoes, shell peas, swing under the oak tree and help guide his riding lawnmower. All the male children well remember his home haircuts.
He was a lifelong active member of the United Methodist Church wherever they lived and held various lay positions at First United Methodist Church in McKenzie. Among his proudest achievements was earning the rank of Eagle as a Boy Scout in McKenzie. He was a member of the Carroll County Retired Teachers Association and at various times in his career he was active in Rotary and Lions clubs. He served several years on the Carroll County Equalization Board.
He and Ernestine called Lakeside Retirement Center their home and "family" since January 2003. His gardening skills and newsletter writing were very popular at the center.
In Joe's memory, the family recommends donations to McKenzie First United Methodist Church, 16 McTyiere Street, McKenzie, TN 38201.
