EUGENE "DOC" LEE MORGAN
1930-2008
DYERSBURG: Eugene "Doc" Lee Morgan, 77, died Tuesday, February 26, at his home. Funeral services were Thursday, February 28, at 2 p.m. at McKenzie Funeral Home with Bro. Dennis Beal officiating. Burial followed at Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Morgan was born July 29, 1930 in Tyronza, Arkansas to the late Paul and Lillian Birmingham Morgan. He was a retired Glass Glazer from the Acme Glass Company in Lansing, Michigan and a Baptist. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Darwin Morgan; one brother, Jimmy Morgan; and three sisters, Ann Aylor, Mary Lee Morgan, and Vernice Ervin.
Survivors include: one son, Randall Morgan of Dyersburg; one brother, R.C. Morgan of McKenzie; one sister, Betty Runions of Dyersburg; and two grandchildren.

MILDRED JOHNSON
1913-2008
HUNTINGDON - Mildred Johnson, 94, died Monday, February 25, at Life Care Center in Bruceton. Funeral services were Wednesday, February 27, at 11:15 a.m. at Chase Funeral Home with Glen Morgan officiating. Burial followed in Palmer Shelter cemetery. Mrs. Johnson was born June 10, 1913 in Carroll County to the late Frank Vickers and Maude Rich Vickers. She graduated from Huntingdon High School in 1932, was a homemaker and a member of Palmer Shelter United Methodist Church all of her life. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Alexander Johnson.
Survivors include; one son, Robert Joe "Bobby" (Sherry) Johnson of Huntingdon; two grandsons and one great-grandson.

GENORA CLOAR
1916-2008
UNION CITY - Genora Sue "Big Mama" (Sanders) Cloar, 91, died Tuesday, February 26, at the home of her daughter. Funeral services were Friday, February 29, at 3 p.m. at White-Ransom Funeral Home in Union City with Rev. Melvin Poe officiating. Burial followed at East View cemetery.
Mrs. Cloar was born March 4, 1916 in Benton County to the late Robert Asberry and Cora (Hooten) Sanders. She was a retired beautician, member of Calvary Baptist Church in Union City and Jones-Walker Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Glenn Cloar; one daughter, Sara Hannafee; one son, David Glenn Cloar; two brothers, Kenneth Sanders and Bobby Sanders; one sister, Gladys Lankford; and two grandchildren.
Survivors include: one daughter, Glenda (James) Vinson of Union City; four sisters, Beatrice Roberts of Huntingdon, Orville Nanney of Henry, Frances Chandler of California and Margie Davenport of Decatur, Alabama; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
The family requests that memorials be made to Calvary Baptist Church building fund.

JODIE L. GOWAN
ATWOOD - Jodie L. Gowan, 85, died Monday, February 25, at his home. Funeral services were Thursday, February 28, at 2 p.m. at Bodkin Funeral Home in Milan with burial in Hopewell cemetery in Lavinia.
Mr. Gowan was a retired farmer, a member of Hopewell Baptist Church and a WW II U.S. Army veteran. He was captured by the Germans at Krinhelt, Belgium and was a prisoner of war for 4 1/2 months.
Survivors include: his wife, Louise Gowan of Atwood; three daughters, Linda Inman of Atwood, Alice Kay Jackson of Martin and Nancy Blankenship of Milan; one son, Joe Ray Gowan of Grand Junction; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
The family requests memorials be made to the Gideons International.

TREVA EARLINE SMOTHERS WOODS
1944-2008
BRUCETON - Treva Earline Smothers Woods, 63, died Tuesday, February 26, at her home. Funeral services are Friday, February 29, at 2 p.m. at Stockdale-Malin Funeral Home in Camden with Bro. Kim Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Mrs. Woods was born November 23, 1944 in Camden to the late Chester and Agnes French Alexander Smothers. She was a homemaker and a member of the First General Baptist Church in Malden, Missouri. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Newburn Woods, and one sister, Lorene Mitchell.
Survivors include: two sons, Michael (Brenda) Woods of Camden and Terry Len Woods of Bruceton; one sister, Sandra Smith of Camden; and one brother, Sammy Douglas of Camden.

CYNTHIA JANE MARISE
1958-2008
McKENZIE - Cynthia Jane Marise, 50, died Tuesday, February 26, at her home. Graveside services are Saturday, March 8, at 1 p.m. at Leach Full Gospel Church cemetery.
Mrs. Marise was born April 26, 1957 in Newark, Ohio. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her mother, Janette Lee Kidwell Marise.
Survivors include: her husband, Tim Cooper; her father, Robert H. Marise of McKenzie; two brothers, Hershel Marise of McKenzie and Gary Marise of McLemoresville; one sister, Patricia Smith of McKenzie; two half brothers, Eddie Crawford, Jr. and Randy Marise, both of McLemoresville; one stepbrother, Danny Goodman of McKenzie; three stepsisters, Judy Moore of McKenzie, Brenda McKinley of Dresden, and Beverly Banks of Spring Creek, TN.
Dilday Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BARBARA JEAN SMITH
1944-2008
HENRY - Barbara Jean Smith, 63, died Thursday, February 28, at her home. Funeral services were Saturday, March 1, at 10:00 a.m. at Ridgeway Funeral Home with Alan Trull and Tony Wiggins officiating. Burial followed in Henry City cemetery.
Mrs. Smith was born February 29, 1944 in Los Angeles, California to the late Sam Clarence and Vera Radford Smith. She retired in 2007 from Haldex where she worked as a machine operator. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church in Henry. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Jamie and Brian Bazzell; one sister, Cornelia Wright; and one brother, Ferman Smith.
Survivors include: her husband, Harlon "Bo" Smith, Sr. of Henry; three daughters: Donna (Tony) Willoughby of Buchanan, Debra Snow of Paris, and Dawn Wade of Evansville, Indiana; two sons, Hal Smith, Jr. of Clifton and Duane Smith of Paris; one sister, Mary Wilson of Henry; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

JERE BRYSON JARRELL
1934-2008
TENNESSEE RIDGE: Jere Bryson Jarrell, 73, died Tuesday, February 26, at his home. Funeral services were Saturday, March 1, at Chase Funeral Home with Bro. Ted Gentle officiating. Burial followed in Christian Chapel cemetery.
Mr. Jarrell was born July 30, 1934 in Morrison, Tennessee to the late James Dewey and Daisy (Haston) Jarrell. He served in the Army, was a retired security guard for the Red Cross Service and a member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include: his fiancee', Norma Sue Norman of Huntingdon; one daughter, Donna (Earl) Pahlow of Ben Lomond, California; one sister, Joyce L. Donaldson of Dover; and two brothers, James H. Jarrell and Charles L. Jarrell, both of California.

BETTY ANN WILKES
1942- 2008
HUNTINGDON - Betty Ann Wilkes, 65, died Friday, February 29, at Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were Monday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at Dilday Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Hollingsworth and Bro. Wendell Burchett officiating. Burial followed in Palmer Shelter cemetery.
Mrs. Wilkes was born June 21, 1942 to the late Martin and Faye Gorley Walton. She was a homemaker. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Eric Wilkes; one brother, Dave Walton; and two sisters, Sylvia McGranahan and Mildred James.
Survivors include: her husband, James D. Wilkes; one son, Donald Devin (Norma) Wilkes of Huntingdon; two sisters, Becky Burchett of Lexington and Joyce Walton of Vienna, Illinois; one brother, Tim Walton of Lexington; one granddaughter and one step-granddaughter.

MARY GAYLE MATHENY
1932-2008
HOLLOW ROCK - Mary Gayle Matheny, 75, died Friday, February 29, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Funeral services were Sunday, March 2, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Buena Vista with Rev. Paul Merwin officiating. Burial followed in McAuley cemetery near Buena Vista.
Mrs. Matheny was born July 25, 1932 in Obion County to the late Noah Hollingsworth and Vivian Butler Hollingsworth. She was a retired seamstress for HIS and a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virdell Matheny; one sister, Rovran Jackson; and five brothers, Larry, Ronald, Dale, Noah, David and Charles.
Survivors include: one daughter, Debbie (Roger) Pafford of Camden; four sisters, Sarah Roberts of Hollow Rock, Patricia Fowler of Buena Vista, Charlotte Taylor and Pansy Lawton, both of Bruceton; two brothers, James Darrell of Huntingdon and Johnny Hollingsworth of Bruceton; two grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

DENNIS ALLEN BARNES
1963-2008
NASHVILLE - Dennis Allen Barnes, 44, died Wednesday, February 27, at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Funeral services were Friday, February 29, at 2 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Price officiating. Burial followed in Hopewell cemetery in Gleason.
Mr. Barnes, disabled, was born October 28, 1963 in McKenzie.
Survivors include: his parents, Hollis T. Barnes of Ohio and Ruth Franklin Pryor of Gleason; his stepfather, Steve Pryor of Gleason; and one half-sister, Robin Mayo of Union City.

EFFIE CARVER OWNBY
ROCKINGHAM, NORTH CAROLINA: Effie Carver Ownby, 96, died Thursday, February 28, at Rockingham Manor. Graveside funeral services were Monday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem cemetery with Bro. Ben E. Wainscott officiating.
Mrs. Ownby was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Ownby; one brother, Hulon Carver; and two sisters, Berdie Puckett and Ruth Myers.
Survivors include: one daughter, Glenda (Dennis) Krupinski of Laurinburg, North Carolina; and five grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

DONALD EVAN BURSLEY
1923-2008
HENRY - Donald Evan Bursley, 84, died Sunday, March 2, at his home. Funeral services are Wednesday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at McKenzie Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Wiggins and Bro. Paul Merwin officiating. Burial will follow at Caledonia cemetery.
Mr. Bursley was born May 13, 1923 in Charlotte, Michigan to the late Evan Bert and Vera Ann Satterley Bursley. He was a farmer and retired factory worker, a deacon at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Henry, a WW II U.S. Navy veteran, and a life member of the VFW. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one stepdaughter, Sharon Kay Reid.
Survivors include: his wife, Mattilene Allen Reynolds Bursley; two stepsons, Rodney Reynolds of Dallas, Georgia and Dane Reynolds of Dover; one brother, William Bursley of Eaton Rapids, Michigan; four sisters, Maxine Figur of Lansing, Michigan, Mabel Olney and Ruth Ann Olney, both of Eaton Rapids, Michigan and Jean Sharon of Grand Ledge, Michigan.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. until time of service.

VIRGIL BLACKWELL
1927-2008
HUNTINGDON - Virgil Blackwell, 81, died Friday, May 2, at Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center. Funeral services were Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at Dilday Funeral Home with Bro. Scott Carter officiating. Burial followed in McLemoresville cemetery.
Mr. Blackwell was born March 20, 1927 in Trezevant to the late Calvin and Etta Liza Toombs Blackwell. He was a retired operator for TVA and a World War II Army veteran. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Virgil Thomas Blackwell; one sister, Sue Stewart; and one grandson.
Survivors include: one son, Calvin Lynn Blackwell; three daughters, Pat (Glendon) Rich, Nancy (Randy) Crider, and Debbie (James) Churchwell, all of Huntingdon; two sisters, Alene Carter and Louise (Roy) Fuller, both of Huntingdon; 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
