Roy Milton Roper
1926-2003
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - Services for Roy Milton Roper, 77, were at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 3, at Graceland Church of Christ in Milwaukee with the Rev. Henderson Woods officiating. Interment icon was in Veteran's Memorial cemetery in Union Grove, Wisconsin.
Mr. Roper died on Tuesday, May 27.
He was born April 11, 1926 in McKenzie to the late Clint and Nora Roper. He received his formal education at Webb High School and was a member of the Graceland Church of Christ.
Mr. Roper enlisted in the United States Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged due to an injury sustained during the war.
Survivors include one daughter, Fairene Simmons; two sisters, Lizzie Rogers and Erma Humphrey; two grandchildren, several nephews and one niece. Preceding him in death were one brother, James Roper and two sisters, Grace Roper and Ruthie Mae Roper.

Juanita R. Johnson
1925-2003
McKENZIE - Services for Juanita R. Johnson, 78, were at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, June 15 at Johnson Temple CME Church with the Rev. H.L. Cunningham officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery. Trinity Funeral Home of Paris was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Johnson died on Saturday, June 7 at Oak Manor Nursing Home in McKenzie.
She was born May 18, 1925 in McKenzie to the late Charlie Rutherford and Virginia Rutherford. She was a graduate of Webb High School, a member of Johnson Temple CME Church where she was elected trustee, served as missionary president and was a member of the senior choir.
Survivors include two sisters, Mattie D. Walker of Bell Glade, Florida and Victoria Pulliam of Jackson; a brother, Milton Strayhorn of McKenzie; several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Abraham Johnson; a sister, Earlie M. Pate and two brothers, Addie Rutherford and Charles Rutherford.

Candyce Diane Clifford 'Candy' Richards
1949-2003
TREZEVANT - Mrs. Candyce Diance Clifford 'Candy' Richards, 54, died on Sunday, June 15 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, June 18 at the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel. Cremation and entombment will follow in the Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Richards was born January 8, 1949 in Carroll County. She was a medical records specialist for the Jackson Clinic.
Survivors include her parents, Escoe and Carol Chute Clifford of Huntingdon; two daughters, Theresa Grimes of Humboldt and Michelle Lamb of McKenzie; one son, Michael Mulligan of Trezevant; her former spouse, Jim Richards of Trezevant; one stepdaughter, Apryl Richards of Seattle, Washington and one stepson, Paul Richards of Virginia Beach, Virginia; one sister, Debra Musgrove of Dallas, Texas; one brothers, Escoe Clifford III of Trezevant; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren, an aunt and uncle and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Nellie Lyons
1915-2003
PARIS - Services for former Paris resident Nellie Lyons, 87, of the Courtyard Community Center in Fulton Mississippi were at 3:00 p.m., Monday, June 16 at McEvoy Funeral Home with her grandson, Bobby Campbell of McKenzie officiating. Burial followed in Bevil cemetery.
Mrs. Lyon died on Saturday, June 14 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi.
She was born August 27, 1915 in West Virginia to the late William David Williamson and Liza Jane Thomas Williamson. She was married in June, 1930 to Hezzie E. Lyons, who died in May, 1973.
Mrs. Lyons worked for Mar-Kel Lighting, formerly of Paris and was a homemaker. While a resident of Mississippi, she worked as a sitter and was a member of the Fulton First Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Marjorie Wheeler of Fulton, Paula Mays of Holly Springs, Mississippi, and twins Mary Lou Banks of McKenzie and Ida Sue Lowery of Belle Rive, Illinois; two sons, Durwood Lyons of Centerville and Bill Lyons of New Albany, Mississippi; fifteen grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren. Three grandchildren also preceded her in death.

Leo Russell Martin
1905-2003
GLEASON - Services for Leo Russell Martin, 98, were on Sunday, August 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Gallimore Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Price officiating. Interment icon followed in the Mt. Comfort cemetery in Yuma.
Mr. Martin, a retired farmer, died on Thursday, July 31 at the Hillview Nursing Home in Dresden. He was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in Ridgely.
He was born in Henry on February 27, 1905 to the late Franklin Atlas Martin and Gracie Henderson Martin. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ila Martin.
Survivors include four sons, Doyle Martin of McKenzie, Carmen Martin of Buchanan and Loyle Martin and Charlie Martin, both of Gleason; two daughters, Betty Antwine of Gleason and Nettie Jean Dilday of Westfield Center, Ohio; 22 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.

Lois Bourn-Burns
1945-2003
GLEN-CARBON, ILLINOIS: Services for Lois Bourn-Burns, 57, formerly of Gleason, were on Wednesday, July 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gallimore Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Auvenshine officiating. Interment icon followed in the New Hope cemetery.
Mrs. Bourn-Burns died on Friday, July 25 at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Mrs. Bourn-Burns was born on December 1, 1945 in Gleason to the late Jeter Buntin and Hester Mae Southerland Buntin. She had worked for the American Airlines Air Cargo Department for 37 years.
Survivors include her husband, Willie James Burns; one stepson, Jermaine Burns of Charlotte, North Carolina; two stepdaughters, Shaning Burns of Albany, Georgia and Sakim Burns of Dawson, Georgia; one brother, Kenneth Buntin of Lavergne and seven step-grandchildren.

Betty Jo Mitchell
1931-2003
McKENZIE - Services for Betty Jo Mitchell, 72, will be at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 6 at Kingdom Hall Church with Bro. Leroy Taylor officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
She was born Betty Jo Mustain on April 3, 1931 in Dyersburg to the late Lela Lavita Hendrix and William Earnest Mustain.
Mrs. Mitchell, retired employee of World Color in Dresden, lost her 14-year battle to cancer on Sunday, August 3 at her home in McKenzie.
She was married for almost 54 years and is survived by her husband, John Mitchell. She is also survived by two sons, Paul Mitchell of Lynnwood, Washington and Mark Mitchell of McKenzie, as well as three grandchildren, Chris Mitchell of Snoqualmie, Washing, Chase Mitchell of McKenzie and Kristin Mitchell of McKenzie; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Willie Monroe of Trenton and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. Betty had been a member of the McKenzie Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses since 1959 and saw the group grow from about a dozen to over 100. She now awaits the promised resurrection.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 5 from 4:00-9:00 p.m. and until services on Wednesday.

Allen E. Williams
1917-2003
HUNTINGDON - Mr. Allen E. Williams, 86, died on Friday, November 14 at the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Humboldt. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, November 16 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Fred Ward officiating. Interment icon followed in the Hickory Flatt cemetery near Cedar Grove.
Mr. Williams, the son of the late Clark and Gracie Burke Williams was born October 18, 1917 in Dyer. At the age of 10, he moved to Huntingdon with his family. On May 23, 1942 he was drafted into the United States Army. He served three and one half year in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in World War II. In 1946, he was elected Circuit Court Clerk for Carroll County and served one term. His second military career began on November 12, 1949 with the Tennessee Army National Guard when he entered on the date of Federal Recognition of Anti Tank Company, 117th Infantry. On December 15, 1948, he accepted the full-time position of Unit Administrator of the Huntingdon unit. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1977, after 33 years and four months of service to his country. His awards include: Asiatic-Pacific Theater medal, with one bronze star, Good Conduct medal, National Defense service medal; World War II Victory medal, Armed Forces Reserve medal; National Guard Distinguished Service Medal, Tennessee National Guard Commendation Medal and numerous other state awards. In 1974 he received the first 'Chief's Fifty' recruiting award which was presented personally by the Chief, National Guard Bureau, in Washington, D.C.
On August 8, 1993, the Huntingdon National Guard was dedicated and renamed the Allen E. Williams Armory.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mrs. Lois Cook Williams; one son, Steve Williams and one brother Johnny Williams, all of Huntingdon. Two brothers, Billy Williams and Dallas Williams preceded him in death.

Velma Ellis
1922-2003
MEMPHIS - Mrs. Velma Ellis, 81, formerly of the Vale Community, died on Wednesday, November 12 at the Tri-Lakes Medical Center in Batesville, Mississippi. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, November 15 in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Steve Whitworth officiating. Interment icon followed in the New Hope cemetery.
Mrs. Ellis, the daughter of the late John and Arlie Mitchell Yarbrough, was born January 29, 1922 in Vale. She was a member of the Union Avenue Methodist Church in Memphis and worked in the Medical Records Department of LeBonheur Hospital for 26 years. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Ocie VanCleave and two brothers, Milton Yarbrough and Tommy Yarbrough.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Ellis of Batesville, Mississippi; one sister, Louise Suiter of Miami, Florida; two grandchildren and one great-grandson.

William Thomas Smith
1920-2003
HUNTINGDON - Mr. William Thomas Smith, 83, died on Thursday, November 13 at the Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation Center. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Mr. Smith was born January 16, 1920 in Montgomery County to the late Leslie Homer and Lucy Power Smith. He was an army veteran and a farmer. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ida Jane Palmer.
Survivors include four sisters, Martha Murphy of Paducah, Kentucky, Helen Johnson of Clarksville, Lucile Tuell of Jeffersontown, Kentucky and Christine Collins of Louisville, Kentucky and one brother, John Edwin Smith of Paducah, Kentucky. Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Joe Seay
1931-2003
CEDAR GROVE - Mr. Joe Seay, 72, died Wednesday, November 12 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, November 15 at 3:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Robert Barger and Brother John Holcomb officiating. Interment icon followed in the Gibson Memory Gardens.
Mr. Seay, the son of the late Louis Hambrick and Ora E. Wright Seay, was born February 3, 1931 in Winston County, Alabama. He was a Baptist, a World War II army veteran and the retired owner of Joe's Barbecue in Huntingdon. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Clint Hambrick and Paul Hambrick.
Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Dale Baxter Seay; one son, Jerry Seay and one grandson, all of Cedar Grove.

Rev. Lee Earl Scott
1930-2003
McKENZIE - Rev. Lee Earl Scott, 73, passed away Saturday, November 15 at his son's home in Maryville. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, November 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Barron Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Dr. William Rustenhaven and Rev. Merlyn Alexander officiating. Interment icon followed in the church cemetery.
Rev. Scott was born August 5, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan. He was an active minister for the Cumberland Presbyterian Churches and was serving as pastor for Barren Spring Cumberland Presbyterian Church and the Trezevant Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He had pastored churches in Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1953 from Bethel College in McKenzie, a Bachelor of Divinity Degree in 1956 from the Cumberland Presbyterian Seminary in McKenzie and a Master of Arts Degree in 1966 from the Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. His mother, Lee Ella Seay Scott, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Carolyn LaFollette Scott; two daughters, Donna Marie Scott Kesterson of Maryville and Laura Lynn Scott Chambers of Henderson, Texas; three sons, David Wayne Scott of Dyersburg, Jerry Lee Scott of Maryville and James Houston Scott of Longview, Texas; his father, James Thomas Scott of Sparta; two sisters, Margie Louise Scott Gore of Sparta and Frances Ann Scott Anderson of Gross Point Farms, Michigan; one brother, Rev. Clifton Alvis Scott of Sparta; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
