Carlos J. Palmer
1923-2003
BIG SANDY: Services for Carlos J. Palmer, 80, were at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 16 at Stockdale-Malin Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. John Burroughs officiating. Interment icon followed in the Ramble Creek cemetery in Big Sandy.
Mr. Palmer died on Saturday, September 13 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
He was born April 13, 1923 in Carroll County to the late Clifton Palmer and Bertie Mitchell Palmer. He was self-employed and a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Mae Brewer Palmer; two sons, Pat Palmer of Atwood and Johnny Palmer of Idlewild; four sisters, Cassie Woods, Peggy Halford, both of Atwood, Betty Conley of McKenzie and Joan Webb of Milan; five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Jackie Palmer; two sisters, Jean Sanders and Polly Taylor and a brother, Adrian Palmer.

Gracie R. Porter
1914-2003
SPRINGVILLE - Services for Gracie Russell Porter, 89, were at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 13 at Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church with the Rev. John C. Campbell of Evergreen Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member, officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Church cemetery.
Mrs. Porter was dead on arrival Tuesday morning, September 9 at the Henry County Medical Center in Paris.
She was born in Springville on November 26, 1914 to the late Polly Russell. She was the widow of Wilbert Porter, who died on September 4, 1979.
As a member of the Evergreen Church, she served as a youth Sunday school teacher and on the mother's board. She leaves two daughters, Anna Van Dyke of Paris and Bobbie Rowe of Springville; two sons, Jimmy Porter of Springville and Fred Porter of Henry; one sister, Anna Mae Boyd of Columbus, Ohio; 23 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rosie Ruth Porter; three sons, J.W., Charles and Joe Louis Porter; three sisters, Rosie Booker, Elanor Hudson and Ada Russell and two brothers, Thomas and Lee "Tump" Russell.

Donna Leigh Tucker Slott
1966-2003
ATWOOD - Services for Donna Leigh Tucker Slott, 37, were at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 11 at Bodkin Funeral Home in Milan. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery near Lexington.
Mrs. Slott died on Monday, September 8 at her home. She was a member of the Corinth Baptist Church near Darden.
Survivors include her husband, Michael Slott of Atwood; a daughter, Rachael Leigha Slott and a son, Christopher Logan Slott, both of Atwood; her mother, Janis Carol Tucker of Lexington; her father, Richard Tucker of Huntingdon and a sister, Regina Tucker of Lexington.

Mary Gail Grenade Ward
1930-2003
McKENZIE - Services for Mary Gail Grenade Ward, 73, were at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 11 at Brummitt Funeral Home with Bro. Tony Janner officiating. Burial was in Mt. Olivet cemetery.
Mrs. Ward died on Monday, September 8 at McKenzie Health Care Center.
She was born March 14, 1930 in McKenzie to the late Mary Lou Gilbert Grenade and William Gale Grenade. She was a member of the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in McKenzie.
There are no immediate survivors.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harlon Ward and two sons, Edward Ward and Richard Ward.

Hallie Day Witherspoon
1910-2003
HUNTINGDON - Mrs. Hallie Day Witherspoon, 93, died on Thursday, September 11 at the Life Care Center in Bruceton. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother James Daniels officiating. Interment icon followed in the Bethlehem cemetery.
Mrs. Witherspoon was born January 20, 1910 in Bemis to the late George Griffin and Callie Edwards Day. She was a homemaker and a member of the Prospect Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, B.F. Witherspoon and a stepson, Johnny Witherspoon.
Survivors include one daughter, Alice Addonizio of Las Vegas, Nevada; one son, Harry Johnson of Huntingdon; one stepdaughter, Betty Pemberton of Romoeville, Illinois; two stepsons, B.F. Witherspoon, Jr. of Brandywine, Maryland and Billy Witherspoon of Jackson; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and several step-great-great- grandchildren.

Murphy Gene Hopper
HUNTINGDON - Mr. Murphy Gene Hopper, 62, died Sunday, January 20 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon. Funeral services were conducted on Tuesday, January 22 at 2:00 p.m. in the Chase Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Jerry Hollingsworth officiating. Interment icon followed in the Prospect cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Mr. Hopper, a retired logger, was born February 2, 1939 in Carroll County to the late Roy and Ruth (Tubbs) Hopper. A son, Roy Lee Hopper, who died in 1966 and a bother, Leslie Hopper, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Hopper; two sister, Wilma Lowery of Bruceton and Verna Mae Jackson of Hollow Rock; four brothers, Wess Hopper of Vale, Robert Hopper and Norman Hopper, both of Hollow Rock and Jack Hopper of Bruceton; and two half-brothers, R. G. Hopper of Camden and Vernon Hopper of Parsons.

Magnolia Allen
WESTPORT: Mrs. Magnolia Allen, 81, died Thursday, January 17 at her home. Funeral services were conducted on Saturday, January 19 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mt. Comfort Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Verdell Allen and Bro. Jeff Bryant officiating. Interment icon followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Allen was born July 91, 1920 in Benton County to the late John Henry and Minnie Lee (Jones) Simmons. She was a homemakers and a member of Mt. Comfort Missionary Baptist Church. Her husband, Carlie G. Allen, who died April 15, 1993 and five brothers, Bartlett Simmons, Carlos Simmons, Calvin Simmons, Loyd Simmons and John Henry Simmons, preceded her in death.
Survivors include three daughters, Minnie Sue House of Raleigh, North Carolina, Velda Tegethoff of Christmasville and Linda Abbott of Huntingdon; three sons, Milbern Allen of Hollow Rock, Malcolm Allen of Westport, and Melvin Allen of Jackson; two brothers, Herald Simmons and Ray Simmons, both of Newark, Ohio; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Chase Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Virgie Mae Johnson
HUNTINGDON - Mrs. Virgie Mae Johnson, 93, died Monday, January 14, at the McKenzie Health Care Center in McKenzie. Funeral services were conducted on Wednesday, January 16, at 11:00 a.m. in the Chase Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Chad Ramsey and Bro. Bill Goodpasture officiating. Interment icon followed in the Carroll Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Johnson was born October 24, 1908 in the Roans Creek Community of Carroll County to the late Fernando Addison and Ada Mae (Brandon) Wall. She was a member of the Huntingdon Church of Christ and Huntingdon Education Association and did volunteer work for Baptist Hospital and the American Red Cross. Her husband, James Henry Johnson, Sr.; two sisters, Arnell Wall and Irene (Wall) Pritchard and four brothers, F. A. Wall Jr., Thomas Clayton Wall, Johnnie Young Wall and James Edward Wall Sr. preceded her in death.
Survivors include one son, James Henry (Jimmy) Johnson of McKenzie; one sister, Dorothy Jean Gooch of Memphis; two granddaughters, and two great-grandsons.

Marilyn J. "Susie" Gibbs
PERRY, MICHIGAN: With her family at her side, Marilyn J. "Susie" Gibbs, passed away on January 16 at Hospice House of Mid Michigan in Lansing at the age of 62, following a valiant struggle with cancer.
Susie was born on October 10, 1939 in Owosso, the eldest daughter of Mary Ellen and Dale DeFrenn. On October 28, 1972, she married Kenneth Gibbs. They lived in Perry until 1987 when they moved to McKenzie. They returned to make their home in Perry in October 1999.
Susie is survived by her husband, Kenneth; daughter, Carla (Bud) Grossnickle of McKenzie; daughter Kathy (special friend Bruce Braid) of Durand; son, Claytie (Christi) Nethaway of McKenzie, daughter Kelly (fiancée John Delong) of Perry; son Craig (Lisa) Gibbs of Perry; grandchildren, Bobby Haddix, Alicia Haddix, Nicole Grennell, Mary Nethaway, Joshua Doxtrader, Morgan Gibbs, and Annie Gibbs; sisters, Doris (Robert) Harper of Perry, Jackie (John) Hurd of Owosso, Jerry (Jerry) McDevitt of Owosso, Judy (Robert) Beach of Owosso; brother Mike (fiancée Joanie Caswell) DeFrenn of Laingsburg; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a host of good friends.
Her parents and an infant son, Cary Dale, predeceased her in death.
Susie was a graduate of Perry High School, with the class of 1957. Prior to her move to Tennessee, she had been employed as a bus driver with Perry Public Schools, a teller at First of America Bank of Perry and First Federal Bank of Perry. Susie was an avid golfer and was active in the "Rambler Rays" Relay for Life team and other American Cancer Society Volunteer activities.
While living in Tennessee she worked for the Carroll Lake Golf Club and she and her team represented the State of Tennessee at three American Cancer Society national Golf Championships.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the Watkins Brothers Funeral Home (LaRowe Chapel) in Perry with the Rev. George Harris and the Rev. Timothy Harmon officiating. Burial was in Roselawn cemetery in Perry.
Those wishing to make donations in Susie's memory may make them to Relay for Life, Hospice House of Mid Michigan or Perry Church of the Nazarene.

Lucy Bryant
ATWOOD - Services for Lucy Mildred Bryant, 74, were at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 29 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Atwood. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Bryant died Saturday, January 26 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Luther B. Bryant, Sr.; four daughters, Edna Duke and Barbara Christmas, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Frances S. Brown of Glenwood, Illinois and Betty J. Taylor of Atwood; three brothers, Bobby J. Bryant, Luther B. Bryant, Jr. and Terry L. Bryant, all of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and two sisters, Jossie L. Pearson and Jessie L. Bryant, both of Atwood.
Rawls Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Patricia Ann Wilson
HUNTINGDON - Miss Patricia Ann Wilson, 13, died Friday, January 25 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on Sunday, January 27 in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Kevin Holland officiating. Interment icon followed in the Bethel cemetery.
Miss Wilson was born June 10, 1988 in Davidson County.
She is survived by her parents, Ronnie and Brenda Wilson of Huntingdon.

Della Verlene Rumley
HUNTINGDON - Ms. Della Verlene Rumley, 81, died Thursday, January 24 at the Life Care Center in Bruceton. Funeral services were conducted on Friday, January 25 in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Lynn Stapleton and Bro. Wayne Holmes officiating. Interment icon followed in Long Rock cemetery.
Ms. Rumley was born May 23, 1920 in Carroll County. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Barney Rumley, who died in 1970;one son, Allen Rumley and one brother, William Story.
Survivors include one daughter, Maxine Chandler of Huntingdon; four sons, Dwayne Rumley of Bruceton, Ira Rumley of McMinnville, and Miles Rumley and Terry Rumley, both of Huntingdon; two brothers, Verdell Story of McKenzie and Damon Story of Paris; two sisters, Dorothy Kennon of Paris and Evelyene VanCleave of Michigan; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Louise Young
HUNTINGDON - Mrs. Louise Young, 72, died Saturday, January 26 of injuries she sustained in an automobile accident. Funeral services were conducted on Monday, January 28 in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Lynn Stapleton and Brother Fred Ward officiating. Interment icon followed in Jamison cemetery.
Mrs. Young was born November 26, 1929 in Carroll County to the late Marshall C. and Zona Thurman Spellings. She was retired from Bill Sills Sportswear and a member of the Westport Baptist Church. Her husband, Willis Clay Young, who died December 8, 1952, preceded her in death.
Survivors include one daughter, Cindi Baxter of Huntingdon; one son, Mark A. Young of Franklin; two sisters, Jane Kirby of Huntingdon and Frances Scates of Bruceton; one brother, Jerry Spellings of Huntingdon and two grandchildren.
