Pruitt, Benton "Ben" - On July 11, 2009, Ben took the checkered flag in his long race against prostate cancer. Ben is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 42 years, Marjorie Oldham Pruitt, and four children: Anne (Randall) Lamb of Eagleville; Ben Alan (Leslie) Pruitt of Cane Ridge; Betty White (Dave Neal) of Elgin, IL; and Joel (Linda) White of Cane Ridge. Also left to cherish his memory are many nieces, nephews and cousins. Known for his unstoppable work ethic, Ben was a successful lifelong entrepreneur and businessman. Following his service in the Korean Conflict, as a young man he owned and operated a service station on Nolensville Road. Largely self-educated, Ben was employed at Warren Brothers/APAC Road Company over 30 years before retiring in 1996. He then became a fixture of the Cane Ridge community, repairing and restoring tractors, bus hogging, and tilling gardens. Ben’s success is equally measured by his wide circle of friends, which spans from boyhood buddies, to fellow drivers and fans from his days as a champion driver at Nashville’s Fairground Speedways, to countless work related colleagues, and to the "shop boys" who have gathered almost daily for over 10 years and are like extended family. To honor Ben’s giving spirit and his compassion for children, the family requests in lieu of flowers donations be made to Victory Junction (www.victoryjunction.org), a NASCAR-supported camp for families of chronically ill youngsters.
