Fount Edwards, 90, of Murfreesboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at home.
He was the son of the late Nat and Almedia Swaner Edwards.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Clara White Edwards, of Murfreesboro; sons Ernest Edwards, of Fort Mitchell, Ala., Robert L. Edwards, of Walter Hill, Fount Edwards Jr., of Murfreesboro, Clyde Edwards, of Rockvale, David Edwards, of La Vergne, Roger Edwards, of Murfreesboro, Donald and Joe Edwards, both of Christiana; daughters Shirley Nickens, Peggy Manus, Wanda Martin, Betty Pitts, and Sally Winfrey, all of Murfreesboro, Mildred Campbell, of Milton, and Rita Montgomery, of La Vergne; brothers Edd Edwards, of Murfreesboro, Henry Edwards, of Westmoreland, and Frank Edwards, of Leana; sister Rose Barrett, of Murfreesboro; 31 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
A native and life long resident of Rutherford County, he was a retired farmer. He was veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He attended the Bridge Avenue Church of Christ.
Daniel Michael Byrd, 30, of Rockvale, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at home. He was the son of Michael Lareed and Rosalain Sullivan Byrd, of Unionville. In addition to his parents, he is survived by wife Karen G. Byrd; sons Michael Seth Byrd, and Kyle Spencer Byrd, both of Rockvale; brothers Joseph Byrd and Joshua Byrd, both of Unionville, and Jeremai Byrd, of North Carolina; sisters Hannah Little, of Christiana, and Joy Creech, of North Carolina.
A native of Mobile, Ala., he lived in Rutherford County for the past nine years. He worked for the U.S. Army of Defense.
Pearl Hargis Parks, 82, of Murfreesboro, but formerly of Eagleville, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Community Care of Rutherford County.
She was the daughter of the late Wiseman and Lethia Bransford Hargis.
She is survived by daughters Doris Sanders, of Nashville, Janet Burns, of Michigan, Judith Farris, of Murfreesboro, and Pamela Gray, of Ohio; sons Jerry Parks, of West Virginia, William Parks Jr. and Robert Parks, both of Michigan; brother Wiseman Hargis Jr., of Hermitage; sisters Lula Bradford, of Nashville, Dortch Young, of Michigan, and Betty Neal, of Murfreesboro; 16 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Parks was married
to the late William Thomas Parks. She was a member of the Baptist Church and a former employee of Hygrade Meat Company.
Edd Core Smithson, 82, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at his residence in Nashville. Mr. Smithson was born in Williamson County to the late Patrick Henry and Mattie Sue Bennett Smithson, one of 11 children. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for 18 months before joining the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Mr. Smithson faithfully attended the CCC reunion every year. He worked for 25 years as a security guard with Reichhold Chemical Co., which was formerly Ferro Fiberglass Corp. Mr. Smithson was a member of the Bethesda Senior Citizens and Calvary Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his devoted wife of 54 years, Mrs. Alva Smithson of Antioch; a daughter, Sheila Smithson (Wendell) Marlowe of Mount Juliet; a son, Wendell (Katrina) Smithson of La Vergne; three brothers, Sam Smithson of the Ash Hill Community, Roy Smithson of College Grove and Dorris Smithson of Franklin; two sisters, Rebecca Haskins and Jimmie Brown, both of Franklin; four grandchildren, Patrick and Joshua Marlowe, and Sara and Amanda Smithson; and one great-grandchild, Jordon Marlowe.
William C. Adcock Sr., 88, of Murfreesboro, died Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003.
A native of DeKalb County, he was the son of the late Henry and Lizzie Robinson Adcock.
He is survived by daughters Alma Patton, of Monroe, La., Juanita Watkins, of Rockvale, and Delma Taylor, of Murfreesboro; son William C. Adcock Jr., of Murfreesboro; brothers Odie Adcock, of Nashville, Frank Adcock, of Smithville; sisters Lera James, of Texas, and Veda Clark, of Sparta; four grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mr. Adcock was preceded in death by his wife, Berchie Pullum Adcock, and preceded in death by a daughter, Thelma Hayes.
Mr. Adcock served in the Army during World War II and was retired from the Alvin C. York Veteran Hospital.
John Edward Beard, 64, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003, at Williamson Medical Center.
Mr. Beard was born in Williamson County, son of the late Neal and Annie Lee Roberson Beard, and made his home in College Grove. He was a faithful worker for Dr. Joe Willoughby for 29 years on his farm. He loved to play Pedro at the Flat Creek Store.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Betty Beard; two sons, Tony (Barbara) Beard and Timmy (Bonnie) Beard, all of College Grove; three daughters, Betty Sue (Randy) Matlock of the Rally Hill Community, Sharon Beard of Chapel Hill and Donna (Timmy) Beard of Unionville; five brothers, William Neal Beard and Dan Beard, both of Franklin, Joe Beard of the Peytonsville Community, Raymond Beard of Franklin and Bill Carter of Spring Hill; four sisters, Elizabeth Sharp of Franklin, Estelle Spain of Murfreesboro, Mary Ann Tidwell of Alabama and Faye Nall of College Grove; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and his favorite pet, Forrest.
Betty Jane Taylor, 59, of Shelbyville, died Monday, Oct. 13, at Glen Oaks Convalescent Center. She was a native of Rutherford County and a member of Church of God.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Franklin and Mable Prince Taylor. She was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Taylor.
She is survived by four brothers, Robert Franklin Taylor Jr., of Murfreesboro, Don Taylor, of Nolensville, Chuck Taylor, of Murfreesboro, John Thomas Taylor, of Unionville; and sister Juanita Taylor, of Birmingham, Ala.
Frank Burton Willard, 54, of Rockvale, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of Aline Bragg Willard, of Rockvale, and the late Wiseman Madison Willard.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by brothers Aubrey Willard, of Murfreesboro, Sammy Willard, of Smyrna, and Wendell Willard, of Rockvale; sisters Emogene Bellenfant, of Murfreesboro, Pat Barkve, of Tullahoma, and Margie Robinson, of Rockvale.
Mr. Willard was preceded in death brother James Willard and daughter Crystal Willard.
Era Mae Maupin, 87, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at her residence in the Peytonsville Community.
Mrs. Maupin was born in Williamson County, daughter of the late Walter and Sally Simmons Beard. She was a homemaker and member of Peytonsville Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, L.T. Maupin of Peytonsville; a son, Ronnie (Lynn) Maupin of Franklin; a daughter, Linda (Robert) Williams of the Triune Community; two brothers, Claude Beard of Franklin and Murry Beard of Nashville; a sister, Mrs. Gladys Bruce of Peytonsville; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
William Nees (Bubba) Howell, 47, of the Barfield community, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at his home.
A native of Davidson County, he was the son of Betty Nees Howell, of Nashville, and the late Billy Moore (Pusher) Howell.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by wife Mary Howell; son William Zachary (Zack) Howell, of the Barfield community; niece Whitney Rosenbaum, of Smyrna.
He was a member of the Methodist Church, assistant basketball coach at Rockvale Elementary School, where he was an SRO with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department.
Howard Edward “Ed” Brown, age 88, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003 at Williamson Medical Center. Mr. Brown was born in Williamson County, son of the late Thomas and Dora Fitzgerald Brown, and made his home in the Triune Community.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
Mr. Brown was a retired mail carrier in the Arrington area and the owner and operator of Brown’s Western Store. He was a member and retired elder of Millview Church of Christ and was preceded in death by wife, Johnnie Elizabeth Brown, and son, Charles Edward Brown.
Survivors include son Larry Brown and wife, Billie, of Triune; daughters, Mary Reed and husband, L.C., of Triune, Shirley Walton and husband, Jimmy, of Franklin, Kay Beasley and husband, Mike, of Arrington and Linda Wright and husband, Gary, of Lyles, Tenn.; 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Bessie Louise Claybrooks Spann, 74, went home to Glory Oct. 4, 2003, after an extended illness. She was a native of the Almaville community and a professional care giver. She leaves to cherish her memory: devoted daughters Brenda Louise (Audrey) Spann and Victoria (Earl) Caruthers; devoted sons Harold (Eva) Spann and Ernest (Gloria) Spann; two sisters-in-law; numerous grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.
Gene Carter, 55, of Smyrna, died Friday, Oct. 3, 2003.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Roy Lee and Lydia Hall Carter.
He is survived by sister Virginia McGowan, of Smyrna; fiancee Teresa McGowan, of Smyrna; nephews Mike McGowan and Michael McGowan Jr., both of Smyrna, and Randall McGowan, of Rockvale; niece April Wilson, of Lascassas.
Mr. Carter worked for Music City Truck Stop as a shift manager and attended First Free Methodist Church in Smyrna.
