Virginia Richards Massie, 83, of Memphis, homemaker, died Wednesday at her home. Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, where she was a communicant, with burial in Edgewood cemetery in Trenton, Ky. Canale Funeral Directors has charge. Mrs. Massie was graduated from the University of Tennessee in oral hygiene. She was a member of the Red Cross motor pool during World War II and a volunteer for Lenten lunches at St. Peter Catholic Church and the Fontaine House. Mrs. Massie, the widow of Owen D. Massie Jr., leaves a daughter, Camille Darnall Massie of Sante Fe, N.M.; three sons, William G. 'Bill' Dance of Eads, Charles Garrott Massie of Memphis and Owen Carter Massie of Clarksville, Tenn., 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Elmer Lee Mayes, 79, of Memphis, retired chef for the Naval Hospital in Millington and Marriott Hotel, died Wednesday at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. Services will be at noon Saturday at Oak Spring Baptist Church in Millington, where he was a member, with burial in the Oak Spring cemetery. Jefferson Mortuary has charge. Mr. Mayes, the husband of Ethel Jones Mayes, also leaves two daughters, Carolyn Norris and Sharon Henderson, and a son, Elmer Lee Mays Jr., all of Memphis; a sister, Lue Hall of Millington; a brother, Albert Bell of Hopewell, Va., seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

John H. Rice Jr., 77, of Memphis, retired maintenance manager for Memphis City Schools, died Tuesday at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel with burial in Memorial Park. He was a deacon and Senior Choir member of Union Avenue Baptist Church and a member of the Broken Heart Club. Mr. Rice, the widower of Marjorie Miller Rice and Lorine Ella Rice, leaves a sister, Elizabeth Buie of California. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Union Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund.

Johnny Tate, 97, of Memphis, retired from Collierville Sanitation Department, died May 20 at Methodist University Hospital. Franklin of Augusta, Ga., Barbara Edgeston of Jackson, Tenn., Margaret Tate of Collierville and Cheryl D. Moore of Oklahoma City; seven sons, John H. Tate of Chicago, Eddie Lee Tate, Tommy Lee Tate, Timothy T. Tate and Johnny Tate Jr., all of Memphis, Ricky Tate of Collierville and Roger Tate of New York; eight sisters, Pearlie Lee Turan of Grand Junction, Tenn., Everlean Johnson, Annie B. Smith and Elsie Ryans, all of Collierville, Mary J. Locke, Aline Jones and Iola Conley, all of Memphis, and Ludella Colson of Oak Park, Mich., 55 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

Ben Wilson Williamson Jr., 83, of Knoxville, formerly of Memphis, lawyer and senior partner of O'Neil Parker and Williamson in Knoxville, died Tuesday in Knoxville. Services were Thursday at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, where he was a member, with burial in Tennessee Veterans cemetery. Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel in Knoxville had charge. He was a World War II Army Air Force veteran, a graduate of the University of Tennessee and the University of Tennessee College of Law and a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity, Knoxville, Tennessee and American Bar Associations, American Board of Trial Advocates and American Trial Lawyers Association. Mr Williamson, the husband of Martha Jenkins Williamson, also leaves a daughter, Martha Williamson Myhre of Knoxville; a son, Ben Wilson Williamson III of Morristown, Tenn.; a sister, Beverly Williamson Maury of Memphis, and five grandchildren. The family requests that any memorials be sent to Young Life Knoxville.

Atoka -- Carolyn Maureen Fuller, 70, homemaker, died Wednesday at her home. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Munford Funeral Home with burial in Oakwood cemetery in Brownsville. She was a member of Fellowship Bible Church. Mrs. Fuller, the wife of William E. Fuller, also leaves a daughter, Vicky Benson; a son, Jimmy Fuller, and a foster daughter, Anita Grivet, all of Atoka; two sisters, Ann Mize of Memphis and Dot Blackburn of Asheville, N.C.; three brothers, Paul Mize, Melvin Mize and Jimmy Mize, all of Stanton, four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
