Verda Earlene Hammock
Funeral services for Mrs. Verda Earlene Hammock, 80, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2001, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Ovle Tinch officiating. Burial was in Liberty cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Hammock died Friday, March 9, 2001, at NHC Healthcare in Cookeville. She was a housewife and a member of Christ Chapel United Methodist Church.

Born March 12, 1920, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Shirley and Marietta (Wilson) Carmack. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Emmet Leslie Hammock, and a daughter, Jeanette Walker.

Survivors include a son, Earl Hammock, Bloomington Springs; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marie and Larry England, Cookeville, Brenda and Mike Olmstead, Elmwood, and Shelia Turner, Rickman; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joyce Allred and Pauline and Noah Jenkins, all of Livingston; four grandchildren, Steve Hammock, Chris Hammock, Mark Brown, and Tina Brown; and four great grandchildren, Leslie Ann Turner, Corey Jackson, Caden Brown, and Ross Olmstead.

Pallbearers were Mark Brown, Steve Hammock, Chris Hammock, Ross Olmstead, Ricky Allred, and Michael Allred.

Olin Spurlin
Funeral services for Mrs. Olen Spurlin, 79, of the Vines Ridge Community near Monterey, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at Vines Ridge Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Clayton Padgett and Rev. David Phillips officiating. Burial will be in the Honey Springs cemetery with Goff Funeral Home of Monterey in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Spurlin died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. She was a factory worker, a homemaker, and a member of the Vines Ridge Missionary Baptist Church.

Born September 14, 1921, in Fentress County, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Alpha (Choate) Cooper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Spurlin, and two sons, James Kenneth Spurlin and Robert Glen Spurlin.

Survivors include four daughters and three sons-in-law, Christine and Carl Jason, Georgetown, KY, Allene Penticuff, Joyce and Donnie Riley, and Brenda and Marshall Key, all of the Vines Ridge Community; a daughter-in-law, Idella Spurlin, Defeated Creek; two sisters, Zola Sells, Alpine, and Clarie Richardson, Grimsley; a half-sister, Cindy Yates, Livingston; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

Magdalen Paul
Funeral services for Mrs. Magdalen Paul, 82, of Alpine, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2001, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Nolan Cantrell officiating. Burial was in the Green Hill cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Paul died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was a housewife and a member of the Oak Dale Baptist Church in Monroe.

Born September 24, 1918, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Alex Martin and Myrtle (Ruble) Stover. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Paul, and a son, Glenn Paul.

Survivors include seven sons, Clifford Paul, Alpine, Jim Paul, Knoxville, Ray Paul, Tullahoma, Robert Paul, Allons, Tommy Paul, Murfreesboro, Johnny Paul, Cookeville, and Mark Paul, Celina; four daughters, Charlene Collins, Alpine, Shirley Paul, Cookeville, Carole Ayers, Wyoming, and Sheri Upton, Allons; three brothers, Charles Stover, Cookeville, Howard Stover, Atlanta, GA, and Hank Stover, Alpine; 19 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren. Pallbearers were John Willis, Jeff Upton, Andy Paul, Eddie Thackston, Keith Paul, Shannon Milsap, and Jamie Mann.

Arthur B. Myers
Funeral services for Mr. Arthur B. Myers, 71, of Santa Ana, CA, were conducted Monday, February 19, 2001, from the chapel of Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary in Santa Ana with Rev. Bob Hayden and Rev. Bob Stempson officiating. Burial was in Fairhaven cemetery in Santa Ana with Fairhaven Memorial Park and Mortuary in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Myers died Wednesday, February 14, 2001, at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Born March 6, 1930, in the Windle Community of Overton County, he was the son of the late Luther Jackson and Sallie Edith (Smith) Myers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Luther Kirby Myers and Tracy Alex Myers; and a sister, Edna (Myers) Smith.

He was an active member of North Christian Church in Santa Ana and a retired teacher from the Garden Grove Unified School District in Garden Grove, CA. He was appointed in 1971 by then Governor Ronald Reagan to serve on the Commission for Teacher Preparation and Licensing, serving two times as chairman and one time as vice-chairman. Mr. Myers attended Windle Elementary School and Livingston Academy before receiving his B.S. degree from Tennessee Tech in Cookeville and a Master's degree from Chapman University in Orange, CA.

Survivors include his wife, Thelman (Moyers) Myers, Santa Ana; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Joseph Kolp Jr. and Heather and Phillip Combest, all of Santa Ana; a son, Brett Myers, Santa Ana; four sisters, Callie Melton, Livingston, Betty Ashburn, Cookeville, Mary Barker, Sparta, and Marjorie Deck, Maryville; a brother, Earl P. Myers, Livingston; and two granddaughters, Callie Rose Kolb and Shelby Kay Kolb, both of Santa Ana.

Mary Ethel Matheny
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Ethel Matheny, 91, of Rickman, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, from Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church with Rev. A.J. Looper officiating. Burial was in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Rickman with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Matheny died Monday, February 26, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. She was a housewife and a member of the Pleasant Ridge United Methodist Church.

Born December 10, 1909, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Rice and Nancy Jane (Harris) Walker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carlen Matheny; a son, Carlen Gentry Matheny; four sisters, Mae Hammons, Lula Bilbrey, Cora (Bilbrey) Matheny, and Rissiean Webb; four brothers, Carson Walker, Reese Walker, Shirley Walker, and Charlie Walker; a grandson, James Daniel Matheny; and a great grandson, Gary Wade Buchannan. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Ruby Matheny, Bradyville, and Ernest and Mary Louise Matheny, Pendleton, IN; three daughters and sons-in-law, Vesta and Charles Thompson and Fran and Chuck Babb, all of Rickman, and Iva and Myrvin Shore, Lafayette, GA; a sister, Hattie Webb, Anderson, IN; 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Joshua Dindinger
Funeral services for Mr. Joshua David Dindinger, 24, of Monterey, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, from Pilgrim Christian Fellowship Church in the Muddy Pond Community near Monterey with Pastor Phillip Rudolph officiating. Burial was in the Weeks cemetery with Horner Funeral Home of Monterey in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Dindinger died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. He was a construction associate with John Horst Construction Co. and a member of the Pilgrim Christian Fellowship Church.

Born December 24, 1976, in Denver, CO, he was the son of Phillip Eugene and Barbara (Troyer) Dindinger of Prenjas, Albania.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his wife, Susanna (Horst) Dindinger, Monterey; two daughters, Joanna Ruth Dindinger and Junia Martha Dindinger, both of Monterey; a sister, Esther Rita Catherine Dindinger, Monterey; and three brothers, Joseph Herman Jeremiah Dindinger, Los Angeles, CA, Stephen Andrew Dindinger, Monterey, and Daniel Job Dindinger, Prenjas, Albania.

Berton McCowan
Funeral services for Mr. Burton McCowan, 88, of Monterey, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, November 29, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. Barry Purser and Rev. Clayton Padgett officiating. Burial will be in the Love Joy cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. McCowan, a coal miner, died Monday, November 27, 2000, at his home.

Born October 15, 1912, in Overton County, he was the son of the late William and Burzilla (Eldridge) McCowan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mazell McCowan; a grandson, Jerry Hassler; and a great grandson, Dylan Bilbrey.

He was a member of the Monterey First Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Phipps McCowan; three daughters, Artie Hassler, Mineral Springs Community, Glenna McCowan, Little Rock, AR, and Lois Ann Hosier, Lebanon; six sons, Otis McCowan, Nashville, Ellis McCowan and Arnold McCowan, both of Monterey, Avery McCowan, Dayton, Bobby McCowan, Daysville, and David McCowan of Andersonville, SC; 12 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Mary Jones
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jones, 65, of Monterey, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, November 27, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Bro. Earl Stephens and Rev. David Harris officiating. Burial was in the Wilson cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, a homemaker, died Saturday, November 25, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born June 1, 1935, in Robbins, TN, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Linda (Sexton) Ellis. She was a member of the Love Joy Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Sam Jones, Monterey; a daughter and son-in-law, Lynn and Gary Vanderpool, Winterville, NC; a son and daughter-in-law, Mary and Bruce Ellis, Monterey; two brothers, Bill Ellis, Lancing, and John M. Ellis, Anderson, IN; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Deborah Carol (Matheney) Allred
Funeral services for Mrs. Deborah Carol (Matheney) Allred, 42, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, from the chapel of Livingston Funeral Home. Burial was in Old Union cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Allred died Monday, Nov. 19 at Livingston Regional Hospital. She was a licensed practical nurse and of the Methodist faith.

Born Feb. 24, 1959, in Overton County, she was the daughter of Willie Matheney of Rickman and the late Bessie Margretta (Raines) Matheney.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include two daughters, Tabitha Matheney, Allons, and Amy Allred, Livingston; a son, Michael Andrew Allred, Cookeville; five sisters, Linda Hassler, Crossville, Wanda Thompson and Betty Greenwood, both of Livingston, Barbara Copeland, Hilham, and Brenda Carter, Nashville; five brothers, Royce Matheney, Monterey, Eugene Matheney, Clarkrange, Buddy Matheney, Livingston, Larry D. Matheney, Rickman, and Michael Matheney, Crawford; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Josh Krack, Kyle Story, Ernest Maynard, Jamie Vaughn, Roger West, and John Fisher.

Thurman Key
Funeral services for Mr. Thurman Key, 71, of Monterey, will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. James Phillips and Rev. Johnny Jones officiating. Burial will be in Phillips cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Key died Sunday, Nov. 11 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a member of the Hanging Limb Freewill Baptist Church and served as a minister for 50 years in the Eastern Division of the Stone Association of Freewill Baptists. He was retired from General Motor Corporation after over 30 years of service.

Born April 25, 1930, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Thomas Lee and Mary Jane (Walker) Key. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters, Rosie (Key) Pierce, Ben Key, Fletcher Key, Casto Key, Cecil Key, Arthur Key, James Key, Valasta (Key) Stringer, Gladys (Key) Lackey, Laurine Key, Mazelle (Key) Spurlock, Alice (Key) Mata, and J.W. Key.

Survivors include his wife, Bercy (Phillips) Key, Monterey; a daughter, Judy (Key) Brown, Indianapolis, IN; two sons, Daniel Key, Denver, CO, and Samuel Key, Greenwood, IN; and eight grandchildren, Joseph Key, Megan Key, Katie Key, Valene Key, Chad Key, Victoria Brown, David Key, and Joshua Brown.

Hairold Junior Strode
Funeral services for Mr. Hairold Junior Strode, 46, of Celina, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001, from Macedonia Baptist Church with Paul Strong officiating. Burial was in the Macedonia cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Strode died Saturday, Nov. 10 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a firefighter for the Tennessee Department of Forestry.

Born Nov. 30, 1954, in Clay County, he was the son of Lulie May (Trobaugh) Strode of Celina and the late Floyd Gilbert Strode.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Vickie Strode, Celina; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Gilbert and Amanda Deann Strode, Moss, and Joseph Lee Strode, Celina; a brother, Charles Mitchell Strode, Celina; a half brother, David Strode, Tompkinsville, KY; and three grandchildren, Logan Gilbert Strode, Rebecca DeAnn Strode, and Caitlin DeAnn Strode.

Evelyn Ruth Qualls
Funeral services for Miss Evelyn Ruth Qualls, 55, of Rickman, were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, from the Rickman Chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. A.J. Looper officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Ridge cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Miss Qualls died Saturday, Nov. 10 at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born Sept. 12, 1946, in Cumberland County, she was the daughter of Juanita (Blaylock) Qualls of Rickman and the late Guy M. Qualls.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include a sister, Koleta Pearson, Rickman; a nephew, Tommy Pearson; and a special aunt, Ann Campbell.

Pallbearers were Hugh Livingston, Tommy Pearson, O.L. Sullivan, Ridley Lee, Tommy Thompson, Danny McNeal, and Harvey Pharris.

Robert t. "Pat" Patterson
Funeral services for Mr. Robert T. "Pat" Patterson, 82, of Livingston, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, 2001, from Livingston Church of Christ with Bro. Chris Coil officiating. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12 at Prosperity cemetery in Auburntown with Bro. David Dunn officiating. Speck Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Patterson died Friday, Nov. 9 at Blount Memorial Hospital in Maryville. He was a retired Tennessee Highway Patrol Sergeant, a member of the Livingston Church of Christ, Livingston Rotary Club, American Legion and V.F.W., and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Born September 30, 1919, in Auburntown, he was the son of the late Chester and Arah (Estes) Patterson.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Patterson, Livingston; a daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Jack Putnam, Maryville; a sister and brother-in-law, Francis and Paul Bastian, Glasgow, KY; and several nieces and nephews.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were retired Tennessee Highway Patrol officers, members of the American Legion and V.F.W., members of Livingston Rotary Club, and men of Livingston Church of Christ.
