Melvin Earl Johnson
Funeral services for Mr. Melvin Earl Johnson, 71, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 12, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Jesse Bradshaw, Eldon Davis, and Kenneth Dodson officiating. Burial was in the Fentress Memory Gardens in Jamestown with James T. Davis Post 5062 performing a miltary service with full military honors. Speck Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, a retired teacher, died Tuesday, October 10, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born May 3, 1929, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Sam and Modena (Geesling) Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce (Williams) Johnson; three brothers, Ray Johnson, Johnny Johnson, and Esque Johnson; and four sisters, Lola Richardson, Nola Swan, Gladis Ramsey, and Ivory Johnson.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War, a member of Overton County Public Library Board and Overton County School Board for 10 years, and he taught school for 30 years.

Survivors include a son, Jeff Johnson, Cambridge, MA; two sisters, Frances Hooks and Sue Maynord, both of Livingston; a special friend, Lucy Buttram, Monterey; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Danny McCormick, Ben Oakley, Donald Brown, Perry Harris Windle, Derward Vaughn, and Billy Sullivan. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Kenny Webb, Frank Martin, and Kenny Stephens.

Jewell Elizabeth Shelton
Funeral services for Mrs. Jewell Elizabeth Shelton, 87, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, October 16, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Johnson officiating. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Shelton, a homemaker, died Saturday, October 14, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born August 26, 1913, in Fentress County, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Laura (Winningham) Conatser. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis Shelton; a son, Jerry Shelton; three sisters, Lucy Perry, Lillie Hines and Ruth Conatser; and three brothers, Jake Conatser, Earnest Conatser, and Jack Conatser.

She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters, Wilma Staggs and Ruth Watkins, both of Livingston, and Thelma Arney, Rickman; two sons, Billy Shelton, Nashville, and Roger Shelton, Livingston; four sisters, Virgie Copeland, Lorene Stults, and Helen Conatser, all of Jamestown, and Beadie Stevens, New Castle, IN; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Billy Joe Shelton, Donald Shelton, Johnny Dewayne Arney, Jimmy Dickerson, and Jackie Watkins. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Chris Maynard, Jonathan Thomas, and Danny W. Staggs.

Capitola Looper
Graveside services for Ms. Capitola Looper, 84, of Nashville, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, 2000, at Good Hope cemetery with Bro. Joe Stacker officiating. Woodlawn Funeral Home of Nashville was in charge of the arrangements.

Ms. Looper, a personnel manager for Sears Roebuck, died Friday, October 20, 2000.

Born in Livingston, she was the daughter of the late Ernest A. Looper and Lula (Speck) Looper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Clara Deane Qualls.

She was a member of the Belmont Heights Baptist Church in Nashville and a long time member of the New Century Club.

Survivors include a sister, Joanna Looper Stockton, Knoxville; two nephews, Sam Qualls, Atlanta, GA, and Bob Qualls, Philadelphia, PA; a niece, Susie Qualls Pennington, Austin, TX; three great nephews; two great nieces; two great- great nephews; and two great-great nieces.

Dora Lee Laycox
Funeral services for Mrs. Dora Lee Laycox, 79, of Monterey, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, October 20, 2000, from the chapel of Horner Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. Norman Cox and Rev. Barry Purser officiating. Burial was in the Whittaker cemetery with Horner Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Laycox, a retired supervisor with General Motors, died Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born December 1, 1920, in Monterey, she was the daughter of the late William Jess and Birta Annas (Gains) Blaylock. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lemuel Laycox; a daughter, Robbie Ruth Henry; a sister, Hennie Stevens; and five brothers, William Edward Blaylock, Mike Lincoln Blaylock, George Jackson Blaylock, Dallas Lee Blaylock, and James Robert Blaylock.

She was a member of the Monterey Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include a grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Jeff and Carolina Henry, Dayton, OH; and a sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Hugh Kemmer, Rockwood, TN.

Pallbearers were Wesley Smith, Brad Wilson, John Looper, Craig Bowman, Layne Kemmer, and Gerald Smith.

M.J. Allen
Funeral services for Mr. M.J. Allen, 77, of Hilham, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 28, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home. Burial was in the Allen's Chapel cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Allen, a farmer, died Thursday, October 26, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born October 20, 1923, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Ossie and Hattie Haney Allen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Estel Allen; a sister, Dimple Coffman; and a grandson, Dustin Pigg.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Alba Allen, Hilham; four sons and daughters-in-law, James "Bud" and Carol Allen, Wayne and Sue Allen, Doug and Lora Allen, and Dennis and Elain Allen, all of Hilham; three daughters and a son-in-law, Janet Wilborn, Livingston, and Rita Pigg and Sandra and Gerald Goodpasture, all of Hilham; two sisters, Lassie Pryor, Gainesboro, and Wiltha Coffman, Hilham; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers Darrell Phillips, James Harold Lockhart, Dennis Wayne Wilborn Jr., Douglas J. Allen, Lester Tharp, and Bobby Cravens.

Hubert Hawkins
Funeral services for Mr. Hubert Hawkins, 88, of Hilham, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, October 27, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Earl Williams officiating. Burial was in the Old Union cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Hawkins, a farmer, died Tuesday, October 24, 2000, at the Overton County Nursing Home.

Born April 8, 1912, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Sam and Cora (Masters) Hawkins. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include a niece, Betty Dulworth, Hilham; two great nephews, Carl Dulworth and Donnie Dulworth; several great-great nephews; and a sister-in-law, Lola Bell Hawkins.

Elmo Johnson
Funeral services for Mr. Elmo Johnson, 88, of Livingston, were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Buford Nivens officiating. Burial was in the Bethel cemetery in the Timothy Community with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Johnson, a carpenter and block mason, died Sunday, December 3, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born October 2, 1912, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Lum and Mary Strode Johnson. He was affiliated with the Assembly of God.

Survivors include four nieces, Mary Jo Denton, Cookeville, Betty Copeland, Rickman, and Judy Padgett and Geneve Carter, both of Livingston; and three nephews, Arvis Johnson, Cookeville, and R.L. Johnson and Charles Dillon, both of Livingston.

Linne L. Ledbetter
Funeral services for Mrs. Linnie L. Ledbetter, 78, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Ovle Tinch officiating. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Ledbetter, a factory worker, died Wednesday, November 29, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born June 7, 1922, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late William and Emma (Maynord) Dial. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonzie Ledbetter; three brothers, Stanley Dial, Harley Dial, and Delphus Dial; two sisters, Lola Barlow and Minnie Coy; and a great grandson, Jeremy L. Thompson. She lived in Muncie, IN, for 42 years and moved back to Tennessee in 1982. She worked for Ball Brothers and Werts Novelty and was a member of Memorial Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, James L. Massengill, Brownsville, TX; two daughters, Nita Pitman, Livingston, and Kathy Sizemore, Muncie, IN; a step-son, Larry Ledbetter, Albany, IN; a step-daughter, Sandy Ledbetter, Muncie, IN; two sisters, Inis Allen and Mary Violet Crum, both of Muncie, IN; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.

Anthony Luke Lavin
Mr. Anthony Luke Lavin, 47, of Livingston, died Wednesday, November 22, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a factory worker at General Motors in Michigan.

Born October 6, 1953, in Dearborn, MI, he was the son of Luke and Jean Brandon Lavin. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include four children, three brothers, a sister, a sister-in-law, three grandchildren, a nephew, and a niece. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Lavin at a later date in Michigan.

Jo Ellen Davenport
Funeral services for Mrs. Jo Ellen Davenport, 40, of Castalian Springs, TN, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 2, 2000, from the chapel of Anderson Funeral Home in Gainesboro with Greg Armstrong officiating. Burial was in the Stacy cemetery in the Old Antioch Community of Jackson County with Anderson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Davenport, a factory employee, died Thursday, November 30, 2000, at her home.

Born February 2, 1960, in Gainesboro, she was the daughter of Allon and Mary Helen Reeder of Castalian Springs. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Will H. and Alta B. Stacy and Thadous Reeder.

She served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the Antioch Church of Christ in Trousdale County.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Jamie Davenport, Lafayette; two sons, Justin Davenport, Castalian Springs, and Jared Davenport, Lafayette; two brothers, Jeffrey Stacy, Lebanon and Allon Reeder Jr., Monroe; a sister, Betty Shackelton, Lebanon; a grandmother, Ovas Reeder, Livingston; and a special aunt, Sue Reeder of Nashville.

Clarence Wallace
Funeral services for Mr. Clarence Wallace, 86, of Monterey, were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home of Monterey with Dr. Martin Thielen officiating. Burial was in the Welch Memorial cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Wallace, a retired coal miner, died Saturday, December 2, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born February 26, 1914, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Enis and Mary (Ledbetter) Wallace. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lila Floyd Wallace. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the UMWA.

Survivors include two daughters, Katherine Vaughn and Hazel Walker, both of Monterey; a half sister, Mae Winiski, New York, NY; and three half brothers, Bill Wallace and J.B. Wallace, both of Crossville, and Issac Wallace of Naples, FL; four grandchildren, Ellen Wilson, Felecia Yates, Johnny Walker, and Brian Vaughn; and seven great grandchildren.

Etta Mae Brown
Funeral services for Mrs. Etta Mae Brown, 92, of Moraine, OH, and formerly of Overton County, were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 30, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Cobb officiating. Burial was in the Miller cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Brown, a homemaker, died Saturday, November 25, 2000, in Moraine, OH.

Born November 12, 1908, in Livingston, she was the daughter of the late J.P. and Hosanna Neeley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Lawrence Brown; two sons, Donoth Brown and Delon Brown; a brother, Vester Neeley; and a daughter-in-law, Joann S. Brown.

Survivors include a son, Earl R. Brown, Moraine, OH; a daughter-in-law, Ruby J. Brown, Freeport, IL; three sisters, Stella Ogletree, Dayton, OH, Olene Gore, Baxter, and Ruby Rich, Nashville; 4 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
