Mary E. Copeland
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary E. Copeland, 81, of Livingston, were conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 27, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Steele officiating. Burial was in Copeland cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Copeland, a housewife, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born March 31, 1919, in Lewis County, she was the daughter of the late John and Bell Lee Massey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clois Copeland.

Survivors include a son, James Copeland, Livingston; two daughters, Fay Clark, Livingston and Paulette Wilson, Portland, IN; seven grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Edward Kuell Stephens
Funeral services for Mr. Edward Kuell Stephens, 80, of Livingston, were conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000, from First Christian Church in Livingston with Dr. Lyle Anderson officiating. Burial was in Cookeville City cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Stephens, operator of Ritz Theater and Skyline Drive-In and purchasing agent for Botany 500, died Monday, May 22, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born April 25, 1920, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Timothy Frogg and LouSettie (Rich) Stephens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Dallas Stephens, McClura "Tot" Stephens, Newell "Buster" Stephens, and Lillard Stephens; and three sisters, Nona Cason Sims, Elizabeth Stafford Doss, and Marie Poston.

He was a member of First Christian Church, a veteran of the U.S. Navy during WWII, a long-time member of Livingston Volunteer Fire Department, a charter member of the Jaycees, and a charter member and past president of the Civitan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Stephens, Livingston; a son, Tim Stephens, Livingston; two daughters, Janie Keisling, Safety Harbor, FL, and Denise Huckeby, Livingston; a brother, Kenneth Stephens, Knoxville; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Phillip Stephens, Marty Stephens, David Keisling, Daniel Keisling, Wayne Huckeby, Thomas Huckeby, and Cliff Eaton.

Honorary pallbearers were E.B. Gray, Herman Crabtree, Leo Little, Raleigh Needham, Joe Dalton, Dow Williamson, Alvin Huddleston, Doc Jolley, Luther Franklin, and Floyd Qualls.

Larry David "Tack" Murphy
Funeral services for Mr. Larry David "Tack" Murphy, 51, of Alpine, were conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 28, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Aron Dillon officiating. Burial was in Falling Springs cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Murphy, a truck driver for Livingston Concrete Co., died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born January 26, 1949, in Putnam County, he was the son of the late James D. and Hester Hargis Murphy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Murphy; and three brothers, Sam Murphy, James Buck Coleman, and Joe Benton Coleman.

He was affiliated with the Pentacostal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Melinda Murphy, Alpine; a son, Mark Murphy, Alpine; two brothers, Jerry Murphy and Joe Murphy, both of Livingston; four sisters, Wanda Jones, Akron, OH, Teddy Rose Simpson, Alpine, Valerie Barlow, Hilham, and Becky Raines, Livingston; a granddaughter, Ashley Murphy; an aunt, Effie Coleman; and nieces and nephews.

Alta Mary Jones
Funeral services for Mrs. Alta Mary Jones, 73, of Cookeville, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, May 26, 2000, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home of Cookeville with Bro. Dan Jones and Bro. Sammy Webb officiating. Burial was in Smyrna cemetery with Whitson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Jones, a retired employee of Acme Boot Company, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born August 12, 1926, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late John Millard and Nova Willette (Peterman) Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers and one sister.

She was a member of Smyrna Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Johnny Jones, Cookeville; two sisters, Ruth Pearson and Eda Pat Mahon, both of Cookeville; one brother, John Marcom Davis, Hartsville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Cliff Raney, Randy Hensley, Powell Loftis, Clifton Mayberry, Jere McCulley, and George Thomas.

Lola Inus (Beaty) Byrd
Funeral services for Mrs. Lola Inus (Beaty) Byrd, 88, of Elkhart, TX, and formerly of Pickett County, were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2000, from Williams Chapel Church in Pall Mall with Bro. Randy Tompkins officiating. Burial was in Davidson cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Byrd, a homemaker, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at her residence in Texas.

Born June 29, 1911, in Fentress County, she was the daughter of the late John Andrew and Eliza (Stephens) Beaty. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Omer Norris; her second husband, Benton Whittenburg; her third husband, Fred Byrd; a son, Cashier Whittenburg; three brothers, Caster Beaty and Hasca Beaty, and an infant brother; and two sisters, Vannie Upchurch and an infant sister.

She was a member of the Williams Chapel Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Pauline Bilbrey, Monterey; three sons, Burnis Whittenburg, Elkhart, TX, Dale Whittenburg, Houston, TX, and Danny Byrd, Pall Mall; three sisters, Maxine Beaty, Myrtle Brown, and Fonzie Storie, all of Pall Mall; a brother, Harley Beaty, Pall Mall; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Tommy Whittenburg, Danny Byrd, Tom Storie, Larry Beaty, Rick Whittenburg, and Alfred Gibson.

Ronald Randolph
Funeral services for Mr. Ronald Randolph, 58, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 6, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Hawkins and Rev. Tim Sharp officiating. Burial was in Campground cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Randolph, a welder, died Sunday, June 4, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born December 7, 1941, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Herbert and Ila Brown Randolph. He was affiliated with the First Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Randolph, Livingston; a brother, Elton Randolph, Cookeville; two sisters, Imogene Geesling, Hilham, and Linda Copeland, Livingston; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Bryan Rhea, Greg Etheredge, Scott Copeland, Larry Geesling, Brandon Geesling, Russell Dillon, Donald Harris, and Gary Mabry.

Honorary pallbearers were the Overton County CB-ers.

Joe Doyle Cantrell
Memorial services were recently held for Mr. Joe Doyle Cantrell, 72, of Winter Haven, FL, who died Sunday, January 30, 2000, at the Winter Haven Hospital in Winter Haven, FL. Steele's Family Funeral Service of Winter Haven, FL, was in charge of the arrangements.

Born October 28, 1927, in Cookeville, he was the son of the late Radford H. and Rosa (Speck) Cantrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Christine Cantrell; and four brothers, James Cantrell, Johnie Cantrell, Kenneth Cantrell, and L.E. Cantrell.

He was a retired production superintendent with Standard Register Company of Dayton, OH, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was also a past master of the Stillwater Masonic Lodge #616 F&A.M. of Dayton, OH, as well as a member of the Scottish Rite, Eastern Star, and many other Masonic organizations.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Sue (Thompson) Cantrell, Winter Haven, FL; a sister, Betty Mae Vance, New Paris, OH; and several family members and friends residing in Overton County.

Walter Huffines
Funeral services for Mr. Walter Huffines, of Madison and formerly of Overton County were conducted Thursday, February 17, 2000. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 17, 2000, at Ruth's Chapel cemetery in Overton County with Madison Funeral Home of Madison in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Huffines died Tuesday, February 15, 2000, at his home in Madison.

Survivors include three brothers, Lindsey Huffines, Hendersonville, John Huffines, Madison, and Earl Huffines, Nashville; one sister, Marie Nethery, Madison; one grandson; one granddaughter; and three great grandchildren.

Lera Houtz
Funeral services for Mrs. Lera Houtz, 81, of Monterey, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home with Pastor Basil Phillips officiating. Burial was in Bethlehem cemetery in Livingston with Goff Funeral Home of Monterey in charge of the arrangements. Mrs. Houtz, a retired clerical worker with the L.B.J.& C, died Wednesday, February 16, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born December 27, 1918, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Jacob McMinnis and Lubertha Boswell Lee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Houtz, Jr.

Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Miller, Monterey; a son, Edward L. Houtz, Dayton, OH; a sister, Esther Welch, Cookeville; two grandchildren, Rhonda Leigh Swafford, and Leslie Ann Craig; and one great grandchild, Ashley Haydon.

Lenard R. Matthews
Funeral services for Mr. Lenard R. Matthews, 68, of Indianapolis, IN, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, February 14, 2000, from the chapel of Livingston Funeral Home with Bro. Aron Dillon and Bro. Lyle Anderson officiating. Burial was in Okalona cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Matthews, a set-up operator with Western Electric, died Thursday, February 10, 2000, at his home in Indianapolis.

Born March 13, 1931, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Owen R. and Mary F. (Cox) Matthews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-mother, Myrtle (Reed) Matthews.

He was a veteran of the Korean War in the U.S. Army, a member of the Mystic Circle Lodge #685 in Lawrence, IN, a member of the Pioneers of Western Electric, a Murat Shrine and Scottish Rite Mason of Mystic Circle Lodge in Lawrence, IN, and a driver for the Shriners' Childrens Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca G. (Garrett) Matthews, Indianapolis, IN; a daughter, Pamela J. Naughton, Tulsa, OK; two sons, Gary L. Matthews, Oaklandon, IN, and Alan D. Matthews, Indianapolis, IN; a sister, Frances H. Cobble, Livingston; a brother, Gradie P. Matthews, Greenfield, IN; and seven grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Gradie Junior Matthews, Thomas Garrett, Leland Garrett, Bob Matthews, Callie McGuinn, Wayne Guinn, Rusty Matthews, Andrew Matthews, Pennie Matthews, Crystal Matthews, Brandon Matthews, and Nichole Naughton.

Meekle Mae (Smith) Laycock
Funeral services for Mrs. Meekle Mae (Smith) Laycock, 72, of Rickman, were conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 16, 2000, from the chapel of Livingston Funeral Home with Bro. Glen Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in Bowman cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Laycock, a shirt factory employee, died Monday, February 14, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born August 26, 1927, in Putnam County, she was the daughter of the late John Wesley and Salle Mae (Qualls) Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Oscar Laycock; and seven brothers, Clyde Smith, J.D. Smith, John Shirley Smith, Talmadge Smith, Gib Smith, Tom Smith, and Junior Smith.

She was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Stewart, Livingston, Rita Martin, Monroe, and Linda Laycock, Bloomington Springs; five sons, James Hollis Laycock, Gary Dale Laycock, Ricky Wayne Laycock, all of Livingston, Ronald Laycock, Cookeville, and Jeffery Lynn Laycock, Crossville; six grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were James Stewart, J.R. Billingsley, Gary Laycock, Ricky Laycock, Michael Bingham, Steve Martin, and Billy Laycock.

Ray Hamilton Fowler
Funeral services for Mr. Ray Hamilton Fowler, 82, of Celina, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 18, 2000, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home in Celina with Bill Threet officiating. Burial was in Hatcher Hall cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Fowler, a retired fishery biologist assistant, died Tuesday, February 15, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born September 25, 1917, in Celina, he was the son of the late Adam and Otia Plumlee Fowler.

He was a member of the Church of Christ and a World War II veteran in the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Geneva Clark Fowler of Celina. Pallbearers were Dick Roberts, Ronnie Page, Mark Collins, Mac Dulwork, Bob Clark, and Billy Walker.
