Willie Ray Shelton
Funeral services for Mr. Willie Ray Shelton, 77, of Mayland, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home with Rev. J.C. Ford officiating. Burial was in the Mayland cemetery with full military honors by the Monterey VFW Post. Goff Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Shelton, a well driller, school bus driver, and farmer in Cumberland County, died Thursday, July 20, at the Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville.

Born May 2, 1923, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Irvin Emerson and Mary Belle Swallows Shelton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Marie Brown Shelton; two brothers, James Melvin and Haskel Owen Shelton; seven sisters, Effie Shelton, Dollie Clark, Myrtle Shelton, Ernal Hooten, Bethel Walker, Della Roberson, and Shirley Wright. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Shelton, Mayland; one son, Kenneth Ray Shelton, Cookeville; five daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and John Brown, Mayland, Katherine and Donny Baisley, Sandra and Danny Brown, Mary and Danny Brewer, and Eva and Danny Baisley, all of Crossville; one sister, Bonnie Smiddie, Crossville; 19 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

Ida Ethel Norris
Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Ethel Norris, 88, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Ovle Tinch and Rev. David Singleton officiating. Burial was in the Vaughn cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Norris, a factory worker, died Sunday, July 23, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born April 6, 1912, she was the daughter of the late N.C. and Rebecca (Smith) York. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervin Norris; six brothers and sisters; and two grandchildren.

She was a member of the Falling Springs Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry Norris, Alpine, and Larry Norris, Livingston; two daughters, Inez Wright, Holland, MI, and Joanna Johnson, Livingston; five grandchildren, two great grandchilren, and one step-great grandchild.

Richard Herman McDonald
Funeral services for Mr. Richard Herman McDonald, 81, of Clinton, MI, and formerly of Overton County, will be conducted at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, July 26, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Vankoughnett officiating. Burial will be in the Wirmingham cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. McDonald, a factory worker, died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren, MI.

Born June 23, 1919, in Alpine, he was the son of the late Johnathan and Cassie (Smith) McDonald. He was a member of the New Life Baptist Church in Fraser, MI.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Garrett McDonald, Clinton, MI; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Teresa McDonald, Chesterfield Township, MI; a daughter and son-in-law, Suellen and Phillip Wagner, Armada, MI; three grandchildren, one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews.

Mitchell Maberry
Funeral services for Mr. Mitchell Maberry, 74, of the Seven Knobs Community of Jackson County, were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 23, 2000, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home in Cookeville with Bro. Raymond Hensley officiating. Burial was in the Chaffin cemetery in Jackson County with Whitson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Maberry, retired from the maintenance department at Tennessee Technological University, died Friday, July 21, 2000, at his home.

Born July 30, 1925, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Newton and Naomi (Hensley) Maberry. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Daryl T. Maberry; and a brother, Charlie Maberry.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, Nellie (Gentry) Maberry, Gainesboro; a son and two daughters-in-law, Howard Lee and Linda Maberry and Carol Maberry, all of Cookeville; a brother, Alton Maberry, Gainesboro; a sister, Lorene Netherton, Cookeville; two granddaughters, Shanna Maberry and Shelley Maberry, both of Cookeville; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Billy C. Maberry, Dale Maberry, Paul Mayberry, Donnie Mayberry, Wayne Mayberry, and Daryl Blair.

Edna Linder
Funeral services for Mrs. Edna Linder, 69, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. David Beaty officiating. Burial was in the Hatcher cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Linder, a homemaker, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born January 18, 1931, in Clay County, she was the daughter of the late Fowler and Cora (Smith) Allred. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Linder; a sister, Claudine Collins; and a brother, Horace Allred.

She was a member of the Christ Church Presbyterian in Alpine.

Survivors include three brothers, Curtis Allred and Bill Allred, both of Alpine, and Darius Allred of Phoenizville, PA; a sister, Pauline Johnson, Alpine; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Gerald Allred, Randell Allred, Matthew Bates, Brandon Hargis, Grey Hargis, and Scott Beaty.

Hattie Mae Bowman
Graveside services for Mrs. Hattie Mae Bowman, 84, of Monterey, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2002, from Hanging Limb cemetery with Rev. Dewitt Sampley officiating. Goff Funeral Home of Monterey was in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bowman died Friday, Aug. 30 at Slidell Memorial Hospital in Slidell, LA. She was a retired school teacher with 35 years of service in the Overton County school system.

Born August 13, 1918, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Viola (Qualls) Wilson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Lee Bowman; and a brother, Woodrow Wilson.

Survivors include two daughters, Viola Perry, Kona, HA, and Kathy Kennedy, Bogalusa, LA; two sons, Scott Bowman, Sweetwater, and Ron Bowman, Cumming, GA; two sisters, Mary Francis Gore, Carthage, and Eva Finley, Rickman; and seven grandchildren.

Everel Manton "E.M." Carlock
Funeral services for Mr. Everel Manton "E.M." Carlock, 93, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, from the chapel of Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home in Kentucky with Bro. Jim Savage and Bro. Larry Nichols officiating.

Mr. Carlock died Wednesday, Aug. 14. He was a 1934 graduate of University of Tennessee. While at the University of Tennessee, he spent two years in the Tennessee National Guard Medical Department and four years in the ROTC. Upon graduation, he was commissioned as Second Lieutenant and was assigned by the President for the Infantry Reserve. He moved to McCreary County, KY, in the summer of 1934.

As a school teacher, his first assignment was at Whitley City High School, where he implemented the first agriculture studies program and also organized the first chapter of the Future Farmers of America. He and his wife, Hazel Morris, were married December 19, 1936. When World War II broke out, he was called to active duty and went to Chicago with his wife. He was assigned to the Quarter Master Corps and was soon promoted to the rank of First Lieutenant, ultimately achieving the rank of captain. His assignment included research and development of new rations for Army use, such as dehydrated foods and emergency rations, including new ways to process chicken. Methods he developed have reportedly become food industry standards. Returning to McCreary County in 1946, the Carlocks resumed their teaching positions. He used his vast knowledge to implement jobs and economic development in McCreary County.

The Carlocks remained active in the Whitley City United Methodist Church and civic organizations such as the McCreary County Retired Teachers Association and McCreary Soil Conservation District. He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and director of the Kentucky Farm Bureau. His hobbies included gardening and fishing.

Born June 19, 1909, in Oakley, he was the son of the late Porter and Louisa (Bell) Deck Carlock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters, Verda Ledbetter and Helen Barker.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Jerry Hamlin; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Trelba Lee; a brother-in-law, Clarence; two grandsons and their wives, Lorren and Katie Bryant and Lee and Sue Bryant; three great grandchildren, Ryan, Tanner, and Tyler; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

Pallbearers were Larry Davis, Perry Warren Davis, Randy Shelton, Coy King, Scottie Morris, Larry Morrow, Pat Souleyrette, Tandy Withers, Wayne Morris, Tommy King, Elmer Olsen, Espie Bell, Ernest Rhoder, Gerald Wilson, Ralph Nevels, and members of the Board of Directors of the McCreary County Conservation District.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were members of the McCreary County Retired Teachers Association.

Cecil Theodore Deck
Funeral services for Mr. Cecil Theodore Deck, 93, of Hermitage, and formerly of Overton County, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002, from Christ Church Presbyterian in Alpine with Bro. Glen H. Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in Green Hill cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Deck died Monday, Aug. 26 at Summit Medical Center. He was a carpenter.

Born May 28, 1909, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Joseph and Louvenia (Ledbetter) Deck. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Willie (Vernon) Hall Deck.

Survivors include three sons, Billy Deck, Lebanon, Bobby Deck, Hermitage, and Leo Deck, Huntsville, AL; five daughters, Marie Creswell and Evelyn Deck, both of Hermitage, Mary DiMateo, Brush Creek, Barbara Brown, Nashville, and Wilma McDonald, Dalton, GA; five grandsons; and one great grandson.

Cora Ann Garrett
Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Ann Garrett, 93, of Celina, were conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home in Celina with Bill Threet officiating. Burial was in Fitzgerald cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Garrett died Tuesday, Aug. 27 at Cumberland River Hospital in Celina. She was affiliated with Celina Church of Christ.

Born November 24, 1908, in Ashlock, KY, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Emmaline (Cain) Kilmon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Malcom Garrett.

Survivors include a son, Arnold Garrett, Livingston; two daughters, Elsie Garrett and Alice Fay Gray, both of Celina; and three grandchildren.

Wilma Gidley
Funeral services for Mrs. Wilma Gidley, 74, of Celina, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home in Celina with Father Pete Coffey officiating. Burial will be in Kirk cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Gidley died Saturday, Aug. 31 at Cumberland River Hospital in Celina. She was a homemaker and affiliated with the Catholic Church.

Born July 15, 1928, in Livingston, she was the daughter of the late Kirk Brown and Gladys Lohorn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. Gidley. Survivors include a son, Dwight Eads, Hersey, MI; and a grandson, Jason Eads.

George L. Holton
Funeral services for Mr. George L. Holton, 75, of Livingston, were conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Thomas officiating. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Holton died Monday, Aug. 26 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was the owner and manager of G&L Apparel, a veteran of the U.S. Army, and an Advent Christian.

Born October 16, 1926, in Treulten County, GA, he was the son of the late Robert and Amanda (Mosley) Holton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, two brothers, and a great granddaughter.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Holton, Livingston; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Diane Holton, Dacula, GA; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ralph Jenkins, Livingston; a sister, Iretha Wilkes, Swainsboro, GA; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Joey Williams, Mike Holton, Matthew Kilgore, Nathan Holton, Bryan Boles, Shannon Cox, Lance Ruanto, and Steve Thompson.

Hazel (Phillips) McCoy
Funeral services for Mrs. Hazel (Phillips) McCoy, 72, of Cookeville, and formerly of Norton,VA, were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2002, from the chapel of Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home of Norton with Rev. John McCarroll officiating. Burial was in Laurel Grove cemetery with Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McCoy died Saturday, Aug. 24 at Livingston Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late John and Dona Vaughn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy C. McCoy; a son, Johnny Wayne McCoy; two sisters, Ocie Harding and Dorothy Masters; and two brothers, Morgan Phillips and Roy Phillips.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Carico and Robin Hess, both of Cookeville; a sister, Wilma Redman, Norton; a brother, John Edward Phillips, Pulaski, VA; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
