Wirt Oscar Carter
Funeral services for Mr. Wirt Oscar Carter, 85, of the Union Hill Community of Jackson County, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002, from the chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home in Cookeville with Bro. Morgan Medlin officiating. Burial was in Union Hill cemetery with Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Carter died Thursday, June 13 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a retired farmer and a member of Philadelphia Church of Christ.

Born November 25, 1916, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late John and Altie Elizabeth (Kinnard) Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mable (Burgess) Carter; three sisters, Mable Fuqua, Lillian Flatt, and Mittie Anderson; and four brothers, Ray Carter, Scott Carter, Nathan Carter, and John Henry Carter.

Survivors include four daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and Jerry Flatt, Clawson, MI, Betty Landry, South Hampton, MA, and Helen Carter and Bobbie Carter, both of Livingston; a sister, Sadie Flatt; three grandchildren, Angela Krebiehl, Andrea Miller, and Stephen Landry; and five great grandchildren, Jessica Krebiehl, Daniel Krebiehl, Rebecca Miller, P.J. Miller, and Megan Miller. Pallbearers were Earl Carter, Dycus Carter, Daniel Krebiehl, Stephen Carter Landry, Robert Morgan, and Hubert Flatt.

Ida Cox
Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Cox, 89, of Hilham, were conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2002, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home in Celina with H.S. Brown officiating. Burial was in Turkeytown cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Cox died Friday, June 14 at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Turkeytown Church Pentecostal.

Born July 11, 1912, in Celina, she was the daughter of the late Sissy Boles. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mounce Cox. Survivors include two sons, R.C. Cox and Haskel Cox, both of Hilham; a daughter, Willa Dean Goolsby, Hilham; 18 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

Robert Alan "Bobby" Davis Jr.
Funeral services for Mr. Robert Alan "Bobby" Davis Jr., 20, of Cookeville, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, from the chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Cookeville with Father Peter Coffey officiating. Burial was in Amonette cemetery in Pickett County with Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home of Cookeville in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Davis died Thursday, June 13 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born August 26, 1981, in Livingston, he was the son of Robert Alan Davis Sr. and Ann Delia (Neal) Davis, both of Cookeville.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his step-mother, Peggy Davis, Cookeville; maternal grandparents, Stanley and Barbara Neal, Byrdstown; paternal grandparents, Ace and Betty Linian Hennings, Baxter; maternal great grandmother, Audra Jolly, Byrdstown; two sisters, Emily Davis and Kristina Davis, both of Cookeville; and four brothers, Justin Davis, Christopher Davis, Aaron Davis, and David Cox, all of Cookeville. Pallbearers were Jeremy Brannum, David Cox, Kevin Scheaffer, John Douglas, Josh Horn, Justin Boles, Nathaniel Sluder, Jason Davis, Christopher Davis, and Justin Davis.

Oliver Hayes Hitzeman
Memorial services for Master Oliver Hayes Hitzeman, age four months, of Richmond, VA, were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 15, 2002, at a park near his home.

Hayes died Tuesday, June 11 in Richmond. Born January 23, 2002, in Richmond, he was the son of Kyra (Oliver) and Ezra Merwijn Hitzeman of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his maternal great grandmother, Evalena Collins.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his grandparents, Vicki and Carson Oliver, Livingston, and Marijke Wilcke, Shipman, VA; his great grandmother, Martha Taylor, McMinnville; four uncles, Gregory Oliver, Cookeville, Darren Oliver, Livingston, and Mathijs Hitzeman and Niels Stillson, Nelson County, VA; and his godparents, Richard and Stacey Farinholt, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Hayes Hitzeman Foundation, 22 S. Colonial Avenue, Richmond, VA 23221 in support of research on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.

Delma I. McWhorter
Funeral services for Mrs. Delma I.McWhorter, 63, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 16, 2002, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Gore officiating. Burial was in Good Hope cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McWhorter died Friday, June 14 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was retired from General Motors Corporation, and she served as a member of Swallows Chapel Full Gospel Church and the Eastern Star in Michigan.

Born August 25, 1938, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Willie Newton and Ermine Catherine (Clayborn) Dailey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard L. McWhorter.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Kenneth Spas, Livingston; seven brothers, Robert Dailey, Willie Dailey, and Clifton Dailey, all of Indiana, Roy U.L. Dailey and Herman Dailey, both of Livingston, Howard Dailey, Cookeville, and Donald Dailey, Kentucky; three sisters, Mary Brown, Nashville, Beulah Rollins, Hazard, KY, and Thelma Gore, Livingston; and a grandson and grandaughter-in-law, James and Brandi Spas, Livingston.

Pallbearers were Billy Joe Gore, Lonnie Dailey, Bruce Dailey, Eddie Dailey, Teddy Dailey, Willie Garrett Morgan, Brian Dailey, and Kevin Hunter. Serving as honorary pallbearer was Nate Mainord.

Claude Norris
Memorial services for Mr. Claude Norris, 87, of Elizabethton, TN, and formerly of Overton County, were conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001, from the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, in Elizabethton, with Rev. Brent Seals officiating. Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Norris died March 20, 2001, at Hermitage Health Care Center in Elizabethton.

He received a B.S. in agriculture from Tennessee Technological University and an M.A. in agriculture from the University of Tennessee. He was in the U.S. Air Force in WWII, and worked for the University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension Service in Johnson and Carter Counties. After his retirement in 1975, he worked as agricultural and public relations director for Citizen's Bank until 1983. He also served in the Governor's Advisory Council of Aging, the Board of Directors of Sycamore Shoals Hospital, the Board of Directors of the Watauga Mental Health Center, the Advisory Board of the Herman Robinson Vocational Technical School and the Private Industry Council of the First Tennessee Development District. He was a member and past chairman of the American Heart Association, member and past president of Watauga Chapter 1845 of N.A.R.F.E., and held memberhip in Dasheill Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM and American Legion Watauga Post 49. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton, where he was a charter member of the Four Square Sunday School Class.

Born in Alpine, he was the son of the late Center and Foncie (Smith) Norris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Lloyd Norris, Fred Norris, Arlie Norris Sr., Gladis Norris, Banis Norris, and Dr. Denton D. Norris; and two sisters, Estelle (Norris) Hall and Orene (Norris) Winningham.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva (Grindstaff) Norris, Elizabethton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon N. and Dr. Neil Mooney, Bristol, and Beverly N. and Russell M. Miller, Snellville, GA; two sons and daughters-in-law, M. Lynn and Jatana Norris, Columbia, SC, and Steve and Janie M. Norris, Knoxville; a sister, Marie (Norris) Lewis, Livingston; a brother, Amon Norris, Old Hickory; two sisters-in-law, Margery G. McPeake, Elizabethton, and Winona L. Grindstaff, Butler; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank J. Jones
Funeral services for Mr. Frank J. Jones, 79, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2001, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Glenn Winningham and Rev. Ron Harris officiating. Burial was in the Okolona cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Jones died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He and his late wife were the owners and operators of Jones Jewelry on South Church Street in Livingston. He was a member of Monroe Christian Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII, and a Mason.

Born May 25, 1921, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Lee and Maggie (Reeves) Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha (Daws) Jones; two brothers, Douglas Jones and James Henry Jones; and a sister, Nellie Marie Jones.

Survivors include three brothers, Jessie Jones, Warren, MI, Howard Jones, Middletown, OH, and Aaron Jones, Allons; two sisters, Velma Adkins, Englewood, OH, and Golla Gunter, Hilham; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were George Sells, Phillip Gunter, Bud Sells, Bill Poston, and Larry Adkins Sr., and Larry Adkins Jr.

Willie Homer Glasscock
Funeral services for Mr. Willie Homer Glasscock, 95, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 7, 2001, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Geren officiating. Burial was in the Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Glasscock died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a factory worker for Goodyear Tire in Akron, OH, and a member of Allons Baptist Church.

Born January 12, 1906, in Overton County, he was the son of the late John Henry and Nova Adell (Maynord) Glasscock. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Roxie Helen (Johnson) Glasscock; a son, Charles Glasscock; two sisters, Dessie Reece and Ezma Chilton; and three brothers, Leslie Glascock, Howard Glasscock, and Onzie Glasscock.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Achor, Huntington Beach, CA; a brother, Paul Glasscock, Allons; a sister, Myrtle Waites, Livingston; and eight grandchildren. Pallbearers were Scott Norris, Jack Glascock, Jerry Glasscock, Kent Hayes, Randy Glasscock, and Roger Leisure.

Carl E. Boles
Funeral services for Mr. Carl E. Boles, 58, of Dunkirk, IN, were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2001, from the chapel of M.J.S. Mortuaries-D.W. Jones Chapel in Dunkirk. Burial was in the Dunkirk I.O.O.F cemetery with M.J.S. Mortuaries-D.W. Jones Chapel of Dunkirk in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Boles died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Ball Memorial Hospital.

He was an operator at Indiana Glass in Dunkirk, a member of the N.R.A., Local Union #501, and the Old Country Church of Dunkirk.

He was also an avid fisherman and hunter.

Born March 12, 1943, in Wilder, he was the son of the late Archie and Tina (Treat) Boles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cletus Boles.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Boles, Dunkirk; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Junior Boles, Livingston, Johnnie Boles, Eaton, IN, and Ray and Hazel Boles, Albany, IN; and three sisters and one brother-in-law, Annie Bumbalough, Arkansas, Faye Daniels, Livingston, and Mary and Doug Daniels, Livingston.

Garry Vaughn
Funeral services for Mr. Garry "Little Red" Vaughn, 45, of Cravenstown, were conducted at 1 p.m. April 2, 2001, from the chapel of Twinton Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Jenkins officiating. Burial was in the Honey Springs cemetery with Goff Funeral Home of Monterey in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Vaughn died Saturday, March 31, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a construction worker and a coal miner.

Born May 18, 1955, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Dean and Ovelyne (Roberts) Vaughn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ricky Vaughn.

Survivors include his wife, Brenda Vaughn, a daughter, Ashley Vaughn, and a step-son, Woody Abston, all of Cravenstown; a sister, Becky Key, Twinton; a twin brother, Larry Vaughn, Monterey; and two step-grandchildren, Korey Abston and Brittany Abston, both of Cravenstown.

Jeremiah M. Troyer
Funeral services for Mr. Jeremiah M. (Jerry) Troyer, 84, of the Muddy Pond Community of Overton County, were conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001, from the chapel of Pilgrim Christian Fellowship Church with Pastor Philip Rudolph and Pastor Jacob Troyer officiating. Burial was in the Weeks cemetery with Horner Funeral Home of Monterey in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Troyer died Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Pilgrim Christian Fellowship Church.

Born March 23, 1917, in Colon, MI, he was the son of the late Moses and Lydia (Wickey) Troyer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, August Troyer and Samuel Troyer; two sisters, Mary Schwartz and Fannie Schwartz; and two grandsons, Jeremiah Garber and Joshua Dindinger.

Survivors include his wife, Catherine (Schwartz) Troyer, Muddy Pond Community; seven sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Susanna Troyer, Holland, KY, Moses and Ruth Troyer, San Antonio, TX, Peter and Estella Troyer, Experanza Village, Belize, Noah and Laurette Troyer, Tulsa, OK, Daniel and Joy Troyer, Woodbury, Samuel and Kathy Troyer, Gladys, VA, and Jacob and Christina Troyer, Monterey; seven daughters and six sons-in-law, Margaret Troyer, St. Louis, MO, Lydia and Eli Garber, Prattsburg, NY, Rachel and Gary Cernava, Gustine, TX, Fannie and Leonard Kropf, Ixiamas, Bolivia, Barbara and Phillip Dindinger, Prrenjas, Albania, Mary and Jeffery Wilson, St. Louis, MO, and Rosanna and Martin Horst, Monterey; three brothers, John Troyer, Lamar, MO, Harry Troyer, Ovid, MI, and Moses Troyer, Shelbyville, TN; a sister, Barbara Habeggar, Scottsville, KY; 81 grandchildren; and 51 great grandchildren.

Vester Carl Smith
Funeral services for Mr. Vester Carl Smith, 79, of Monroe, were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2001, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. James Edens and Rev. Austin Flowers officiating. Burial was in the Bethsaida cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Smith died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a ferry operator , farmer, and a member of the Bethsaida Christian Church and Eagle Creek Lodge #530.

Born October 23, 1921, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Willie and Minnie Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Emazell Smith, Monroe; a brother, Leonard Smith, Albany, KY; two sisters, Exie Covey, New Ark, DE, and Ruby Ferguson, New Castle, IN; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were members of the Eagle Creek Lodge.

Ralph Arms
Funeral services for Mr. Ralph Arms, 90, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2002, from the chapel of Byrdstown Memorial Funeral Home. Burial was in Smyrna cemetery with Byrdstown Memorial Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Arms died Friday, July 12 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born February 2, 1912, in Clay County, he was the son of the late Willie King and Althea (Maynord) Arms. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie (Amonett) Arms.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews, Judy Groce, Arminda Amonett, Angie Amonett, Gail Bachus, Jeanie Abernathy, Ardean Vandiver, Norma Dean Lawson, Dr. Michael Amonett, Bill Amonett, Bob Amonett, and Eugene Amonett; and a special friend, Lena Sells.

Pallbearers were Jim Martin, Bob Amonett, Eugene Amonett, Ralph Vandiver, Tony Amonett, Howard Buck, Michael Amonett, and Bill Amonett. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to the Pickett County Library Fund, c/o Byrdstown Memorial Funeral Home, P.O. Box 250, Byrdstown, TN 38549.
