Ernest Keith Vance
Funeral services for Mr. Ernest Keith Vance, 75, of Livingston, were conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 1, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Ovle Tinch officiating. Burial was in Copeland cemetery with Speck Funeral Home of Livingston in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Vance, a retired carpenter, died January 30, 2000, at his home.

Born November 12, 1924, he was the son of the late William Bryan and Stella Maxwell Vance.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Clara Dean Carr Vance, Livingston; a daughter and son-in-law, JoAnn and Paul Norris, Livingston; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Melissa and Brett Johnson, Livingston; two sisters, Imogene Poston, Livingston, and Mary Ruth Young, Lebanon.

Pallbearers were Matthew Nevins, Paul Stockton, Kennith Dickerson, Kenneth Carr, Billy Neal Carmack, and Clyde Hensley.

Bailey Hearn Franklin
Funeral services for Mr. Bailey Hearn Franklin, 86, of Hilham, were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Kerry Duke officiating. Burial was in Franklin cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Franklin, a farmer, died Saturday, January 22, 2000, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Born January 11, 1914, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Bailey Dowell and Mary Ellen (Masters) Franklin.

He was a member of the Church of Christ and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Survivors include a sister, Elise Danner, Michigan; a special friend, Lola Belle Hawkins, Hilham; and several nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Chris McCormick, Ordean Dulsworth, Douglas Lankford, Ronny Franklin, David Franklin, and Clay Franklin.

Billy Don Davis
Funeral services for Mr. Billy Don Davis, 61, of Hilham, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, January 28, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Ronald Strong officiating. Burial was in Concord cemetery with Speck Funeral Home of Livingston in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Davis, a construction mason, died January 25, 2000, at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

Born August 18, 1938, in Overton County, he was the son of the late John Dalmas and Mamie Goolsby Davis.

He attended Campground Presbyterian Church and was a veteran with the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his step-mother, Claudia Ogletree, Hilham; a daughter, Lisa Waters, Cookeville; a brother, Edward Davis, Hilham; three step-brothers, Danny Ferrell, Jimmy Ferrell, and Gerald Ferrell, all of Livingston; a half-brother, Mitch Dulworth, Georgia; two sisters, Betty Choate, Hilham, and Alice Faye Thornton, Union, OH; a step-sister, Caroyln Vinson, White County; and two grandchildren, Heather Rodgers, and Jamie Rodgers.

Pallbearers were Gerald Ferrell, Jimmy Ferrell, Danny Ferrell, Mark Rickert, Trampus Lawson, and Tim Gentry. Honorary pallbearers were Chester Melton, and Leon Gillentine.

Ed Wilson
Funeral services for Mr. Ed Wilson, 68, of the Dripping Springs Community near Monterey, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. Clayton Padgett officiating. Burial was in Mineral Springs cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Wilson, a construction worker, died Wednesday, January 26, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born January 25, 1932, he was the son of the late Allison and Cora (Looper) Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Bilbrey; and two sons, Jackie Wilson and John Mitchell Wilson.

He was Baptist in faith.

Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Key Wilson, Dripping Springs Community; two daughters, Kathy McCowan, Dripping Springs Community, and Carol Phillips, Hanging Limb Community; two sons, Buddy Wilson, Hanging Limb Community, and Jerry Wilson, Dripping Springs Community; two sisters, Joan Denton, Knoxville, and Edith Clark, Dayton, OH; a brother, Harold Wilson, Knoxville; 17 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Betty Sue Turner Smith
Funeral services for Mrs. Betty Sue Turner Smith, 63, of Cookeville, will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, February 2, 2000, from the chapel of Hooper & Huddleston Funeral Home in Cookeville with Rev. Jim Malone and Rev. Bratton Tucker officiating.

Mrs. Smith, a retired dietician with River Park Hospital in McMinnville and Grade A Catering of Cookeville, died Monday, January 31, 2000, at her home.

Born August 17, 1936, in Warren County, she was the daughter of the late Taylor Ervin and Bertha Nell (Brady) Fann. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Williams, and a brother, W.T. Fann.

She was a member of Midway Baptist Church in Cookeville.

Survivors include her husband, James M. Smith, Cookeville; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy Grissom and Roy Carrier of Algood; two sons and daughters-in-law, David Lee Jr. and Terry Grissom, Loudon, and Robert Lee Turner and Heather Gaskins, Livingston; a brother, Wade Fann, Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Elaine Grissom McDonald, Madisonville, Alison Grissom, and Cydney Vanosdale, both of Loudon; and one great grandchild, Logan Zane McDonald.

Helen May Thomas
Funeral services for Mrs. Helen May Thomas, 75, of Cookeville, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 29, 2000, from the chapel of Healy Funeral Home in Aurora, IL, with Rev. William Q. Allen officiating. Burial was in Lincoln Memorial Park in Oswego Township, IL, with Hooper & Huddleston Funeral Home of Cookeville in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Thomas, a homemaker, died Tuesday, January 25, 2000, at her home in the Hardy's Chapel Community.

Born November 22, 1924, in Rossville, IL, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Guy and Delia Marie (Herroitt) Hendricks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Catherine Mahaffey, and a twin brother, Clifford Hendricks.

She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Leonard Thomas, Cookeville; a daughter, Barbara Burlingame, Northlake, IL; four sons, William Thomas, Rodney Thomas, Jeffery Thomas, all of Cookeville, and Gregory Thomas, Aurora, IL; two brothers, Roy Dale Hendricks, Alvion, IN, and Lloyd Hendricks, Decatur, IN; 18 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

Buddy Short
Funeral services for Mr. Buddy Short, 59, of the Shady Grove Community near Monterey, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, January 31, 2000, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. Mike Kerr officiating. Burial was in Stamps cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Short, owner/operator of Bud's Lawn Service and a retired factory worker, died Friday, January 28, 2000, at his home.

Born November 22, 1940, in the Shady Grove Community, he was the son of the late Walter Harrison and Hattie (Cunningham) Short. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Jane Bowman, Cora Fee, and Vada Matheney; and three brothers, Joe Hollis Short, George Thomas Short, and Kenneth Short.

He was a member of the Shady Grove Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Edna (Harris) Short, Shady Grove Community; three daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Tracy Langford, Ella and Rick Dishman, all of the Shady Grove Community, and Gail and Jimmy Dishman, Livingston; a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Phyllis Short, Monterey; two sisters, Rena Belle Dixon, and Eva Beaty, both of the Shady Grove Community; a brother, James Short, Sciero, IN; 10 grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

Randy Eugene Peek
Funeral services for Mr. Randy Eugene Peek, 39, of Hudson, KY, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, June 30, 2000, from the chapel of Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in Kentucky. Burial was in Calvert cemetery in McDaniels, KY, with Trent-Dowell Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Peek, a employee of Vermont American in Leitchfield, KY, died Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at his home. Born in Jellico, he was the son of J.B. Peek of Livingston and Delma Rose Peek of Leitchfield, KY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez (Nottingham) Peek.

He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his step-mother, Dollie Peek, Livingston; four brothers, Bill Peek, Ownesboro, KY, Roy Peek, London, KY, Bobby Peek, McDaniels, KY, and Donnie Peek, Westview, KY; three half-brothers, Charles Peek, Wayne Peek, and Harold Peek, all of Livingston; three sisters, Carolyn VanOver, Whitley County, KY, Darlene Pile, Westview, KY, and Joetta Smith, Livingston; and two half-sisters, Kathy Langford and Irene Peek, both of Livingston.

Laura E. Collins
Funeral services for Mrs. Laura E. Collins, 82, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2000, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Ovle Tinch officiating. Burial was in Fredonia cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Collins died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born June 4, 1918, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Ridley and Ida (Smith) Brown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Albert D. Collins; and an infant son.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include three sons, A.D. Collins, Hilham, Lonnie Collins, and David Thurman, both of Livingston; three daughters, Gelema Qualls, Indiana, Betty Stover, Livingston, and Martha Hughes, Ohio; a brother, Willie C. Brown, Ohio; two sisters, Dorcas Collins, Livingston, and Odell Warren, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

Tony Lee Garrett
Funeral services for Mr. Tony Lee Garrett, 45, of Rickman, were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 4, 2000, from the chapel of Livingston Funeral Home with Bro. Greg Jenkins officiating. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Garrett, an employee of the City of Livingston, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Livingston Regional Hospital. Born July 29, 1954, in Overton County, he was the son of Dulcie (Cooper) Garrett of Livingston and the late Castle Lee Garrett.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include a fiance, Pam Rush, Rickman; a son, Damien Garrett, Livingston; two daughters, Olivia Ledbetter, Monterey, and Heather Abston, Clarkrange; three step-children, Ashley, Jamie and Kelly; two brothers, Harold Fletcher and Mike Garrett, both of Livingston; a sister, Edith Newkirk, Kansas City, MO; and five grandchildren.

Woodrow Abston
Funeral services for Mr. Woodrow Abston, 79, of the Cravenstown Community, were conducted at noon Sunday, Nov. 4, 2001, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. Arnold Murphy officiating. Burial, with full military honors, was in the Honey Springs cemetery in Crawford with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Abston died Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Fentress County General Hospital. He was a coal miner and a World War II Army veteran.

Born April 14, 1922, in Overton County, he was the son of the late George Washington and Nancy Elizabeth (Robertson) Abston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathy Abston; two sons, David Abston and Victory Ray Abston; and 10 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Rozell (Threet) Abston, Cravenstown; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Patsy and Joe Sells, Brenda Vaughn, Marilyn Lane, and Lisa and Dallas Cravens, all of Cravenstown, and Linda and Mickey Smith, Twinton; six sons and six daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Peggy Abston and Brenda Abston, all of Twinton, Elmer and Faye Abston and Michael and Joann Abston, all of Livingston, Adam and Ginger Abston and Gary Abston, all of Cravenstown, and Joe and Tammy Abston, Hanging Limb; a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Louise Abston, Nashville; a sister, Happy Hammock, Jackson County; 24 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren.

Melvin R. Bayer
Funeral services for Mr. Melvin R. Bayer, 66, of Jacksonville, FL, and formerly of Mt. Vernon, IL, were conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday Nov. 3, 2001, from the chapel of Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens with Scott Makepeace officiating. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens with Livingston Funeral Home and Hughey Funeral Home of Mt. Vernon in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Bayer died Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was the owner and operator of an Oldsmobile dealership, Bayer Motor Co., from 1966 to 1981, the owner of St. Augustine Historical Tours Inc. in St. Augustine, FL, from 1986 to 2001, was a member and deacon of the First Baptist Church in Jacksonville, and served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959.

Born Dec. 11, 1934 in Mt. Vernon, IL, he was the son of the late Russell and Helen E. (Witter) Bayer.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna L. Bayer, Jacksonville; mother-in-law, Opal Greene, Jacksonville; a son, Melvin Wayne Bayer, Boulder City, NV; a daughter and son-in-law, Melinda Jean and Randy Allen, Livingston; a brother-in-law, Robert Greene, Ft. Lauderdale, FL; three grandchildren, Kayla Beth Bayer, Bolivar, Natalee Jean Allen and Nathan Keith Allen, both of Livingston; and several cousins.
