Funeral services for Mr. Lawton H. Scantland, 79, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, 2002, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Marlon Winningham officiating. Burial was in the Lynn cemetery in Jackson County with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Scantland died Tuesday, March 19 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a retired mechanic in a garment factory and a member of Flatt Creek Church of Christ. Born January 5, 1923, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late James William and Ora V. (Hicks) Scantland.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine Scantland, Livingston; a son and a daughter-in-law, George and June Scantland, Livingston; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Oather Savage, Livingston, and Carolyn and Freddie Huffer, Monroe; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Ina and Charlie Poston, Livingston, Louise and Gene Barlow, Martha and Earl Flynn, Dorothy Stewart, and Betty and Donnie Hix, all of Gainesboro; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Lando Scantland, Elbert and Idell Scantland, Jim and Betty Scantland, and Joe and Edna Scantland, all of Gainesboro, and Eston and Annie Scantland, Cookeville; special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Billy and Marie Buck, Wilma Buck, and Martha Buck, all of Gainesboro; nine grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Pallbearers were Timmy Scantland, Scotty Scantland, Stevie Scantland, Brian Huffer, Brandon Savage, and Doug Savage.

Albert bButler "A.B." Qualls Jr.
Funeral services for Mr. Albert Butler "A.B." Qualls Jr., 89, of Donelson, and formerly of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2002, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Rudolph Hunt officiating. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Qualls died Wednesday, March 13 in Nashville. He was the owner of Qualls Insurance Agency, an insurance agent, and a member of the Church of Christ. He was also a Veteran of World War II, Combat Veteran of Battle of the Bulge, Normandy Beach, and D-Day. He was a member of the VFW, American Legion Post 4, Livingston Rotary Club, a 50-year member of Livingston Lodge #259 F&AM, York Rite Bodies, a lifetime member of the Al Menah Shrine Temple, Nashville, and a member of the Livingston Chapter #206 OES.

Born July 3, 1912, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Dr. Albert Butler Sr. and Clara (Ritchey) Qualls. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Herbert R. Qualls; and a nephew, Wilbern C. "Russ" Johnson Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine (McCawley) Qualls, Donelson; a brother, Donald M. Qualls, Malvern, PA; a sister, Betty (Qualls) Johnson, Donelson; and seven nieces and nephews, John C. McCawley, Neil McCawley, Mike McCawley, Ritchey Qualls, David Qualls, Ann Rochelle, and Clara Smith.

Pallbearers were Allen D. Loftis, Johnny Ray Linder, Bob Buford, Bill Clark, Ritchey Qualls, David Qualls, and Ronnie Smith. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Joe West, Jerry Allen, James Doran, Dale Mathis, Roger Stevenson, Roy Singleton, Jimmy Carter, and elders and deacons of Pennington Bend Church of Christ.

Katie Louella Phillips
Funeral services for Mrs. Katie Louella Phillips, 71, of Monterey were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2002, from the chapel of Horner Funeral Home with Bro. Mark Bowman officiating. Burial was in Wilson cemetery with Horner Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Phillips died Saturday, March 23 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was a homemaker. Born April 23, 1930, in Monterey, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Lovie Ann (Jernigan) Ford. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claud Phillips; three sisters, Edith Brown, Dimple Ford, and Ethel Marie Ford; and three brothers, Alvie Ford, Ed Ford, and Johnny Ford. Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Claudine and John Sumner, Linda Faye and Darrell Melton, and Debbie Eldridge, all of Monterey; two sons, Kenneth Phillips, Columbia, SC, and Billy Phillips, Monterey; three sisters, Mary Lee Sliger, Cookeville, Jeanette Carter, Monterey, and Mildred Brown, Mayland; 10 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Ricky Melton, Chuck Eldridge, Randy Evans, Luke Phillips, Nick Norrod, Robert Brown, Kelly Lea, and Gerald Smith.

Serving as honorary pallbearers were Trinity Phillips, Billy Phillips, Stevie Eldridge, Wesley Smith, and Shane West.

William Vestal Morgan
Funeral services for Rev. William Vestal Morgan, 94, of Hilham, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 23, 2002, from the chapel of Hilham Church of God with Bro. Edward L. Todd and Rev. Buford Nivens officiating. Burial was in Berry cemetery in the New Hope Community of Jackson County with Anderson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Morgan died Thursday, March 21 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a Pastor of the West Chapel Church in Putnam County and former resident of the New Hope Community.

Born September 1, 1907, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late James Perry and Maggie Louise (Masters) Morgan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (Shank) Morgan; a son, David Morgan; and four brothers, Lester Morgan, Haskel Morgan, Alton Morgan, and U.L. Morgan.

Survivors include his wife, Loami (Lawson) (Hawkins) Morgan, Hilham; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Billy and Kiyoko Morgan, Cayce, SC, James Perry and Yvonne Morgan, Hilham, and Joan Morgan, Oregon, OH; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Carol and Earnest Rasar, Oregon, OH, Ruth Furry, Toledo, OH, Kay and Jack Skinner, Colorado, and Emilie and Daniel Hunt, Greer, SC; four stepsons and spouses, Waymon Auston Hawkins Jr., Brookeville, OH, Willie and Kathy Hawkins, Lewisburg, OH, Micheal and Linnie Hawkins, and Johnny and Tammy Hawkins, all of Livingston; three stepdaughters and spouses, Barbara and Leroy Barlow, Coldspring, TX, Pamela Garthwait, Eaton, OH, and Rebekah and Donnie Bull, Hilham; four brothers and sisters-in-law, George and Etta Morgan, Hilham, Cooper and

Hugh William Davis
Funeral services for Mr. Hugh William Davis, 73, of Celina, were conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2002, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home with Oral Hall and James Hunter officiating. Burial was in the Davis cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Davis died Thursday, March 21 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was Sheriff of Clay County for 10 years.

Born July 10, 1928, in Celina, he was the son of the late William Jennings Byran and Myrtle (Williams) Davis. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death his wife, Nelle Gray; and three sisters, Isabelle Hannah, Winnie Lee Robbins, and Doris Moore.

Survivors include a son, Greg Davis, Celina; a daughter, Cynthia G. Hill, Clarksville; two brothers and sisters-in-law, W.B. and Bertha Davis, Clinton, and James and Nell Hunter, Livingston; a stepson, Eddy Elam, Celina; and a stepdaughter, Linda Rich, Celina.

WilLiam D. "Bill' Cope
Funeral services for Mr. William D. "Bill" Cope, 68, of Livingston, formerly of Byrdstown, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 22, 2002, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Marlon Winningham officiating. Burial was in Story cemetery in Byrdstown with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Cope died Wednesday, March 20 at his home. He worked in sales and marketing at Donut Corporation of America, was a member of the First Christian Church in Byrdstown, and was a Veteran of the U.S. Army.

Born April 9, 1933, in Pickett County, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Ina (Crouch) Cope. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Louise Cope; and a brother, J.E. Cope.

Survivors include his wife, Nennie (Richardson) Cope, Livingston; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Donna Cope, Cookeville, and Erik Cope, Livingston; a daughter, Patriece Arflin, Livingston; two brothers, Robert Cope, Fairhope, AL, and Curtis Cope, Byrdstown; four sisters, Martha Simmons and Ruth Ferrill, both of Byrdstown, Bea Butler, Manchester, and Cue Story, Johnson City; and five grandchildren, Lacy Arflin, Livingston, Matthew Cope, Ryan Cope, Miranda Cope, and Joshua Cope, all of Cookeville.

Turley Mitchell Copeland
Funeral services for Mr. Turley Mitchell Copeland, 79, of Kingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2002, from the chapel of Brown Funeral Home with Rev. Tom Tomberlin officiating. Burial was in Oak Grove cemetery in Rockwood with full Military Honors conducted by the Roane County Military Memorial Honor Guard. Brown Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Copeland died Thursday, March 7 at St. MaryŐs Residential Hospice House in Knoxville. He served as union steward for the AFL-CIO and retired from Y-12 in Oak Ridge as a machinist supervisor. He was an Army Veteran of World War II being stationed on Saipan Island and he was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service to his country. He was the son of the late Joe Mae and Minnie Ellender (Peek) Copeland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille (Brown) Copeland; two sisters, Gladys Hammock and Sybil Peek; and one grandchild.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ann and Alan Cox, Rockwood, Nora Copeland, and Vivian and Phillip Clark, all of Knoxville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Mick and Barbara Copeland, Knoxville, Johnny and Mary Copeland, Clinton, and James Howard Copeland, Harriman; three sisters Beulah Presley, Kansas, Jesse Copeland and Jolene Clark, both of Monterey; 10 grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

ALBA WILLETTE BOLES
Funeral services for Mrs. Alba Willette Boles, 90, of Hilham, were conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 6, 1999 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Bro. Robert Boles officiating. Burial was in Maxwell Chapel cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Boles, a housewife, died Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Overton County Nursing Home.

Born December 8, 1908, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Ambrose J. and Cynthia Bilyeu Brown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman L. Boles.

She was a member of Hilham Church of Christ.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Earl G. and Frances Boles, Hilham; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Katherine and John J. Wilson, Cookeville; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Danny Boles, Butch Wilson, Wayne Wilson, Gary Boles, Randy Boles, and Gordon Carmack. Honorary pallbearers were Bill Ward, Joel Upton, Mayhue Masters, Aubrey Allen, Bernie Winningham, and Billy Joe Holt.

J.B. Averitt
Funeral services for Mr. J.B. Averitt, 84, of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2002, from First Christian Church in Livingston with Rev. Robert Ziehmer and Jesse Bradshaw officiating. The Honor Guard from the James T. Davis, VFW Post 5062 in Livingston, performed a military service with full military honors at graveside. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Averitt died Wednesday, Jan. 16 at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a lifetime owner of AverittŐs Mobile, a member and deacon of First Christian Church, a charter member of the Civitan Club, a member of the American Legion, and a former Alderman for the City of Livingston.

Born April 22, 1917, in Overton County, he was the son of the late John Kelly "Jack" and Lou Ella (Clark) Averitt. Survivors include his wife, Leona Averitt, Livingston; a son, Ricky Averitt, Livingston; a daughter, Peggy (Averitt) Endicott, Knoxville; three sisters, Reba Diemer, Cookeville, Ethelene Crabtree, Clarksville, and Johnnye Marie Seaton, Wilmington, NC; and a granddaughter, Bethany Endicott, Vail, CO.

Carolyn (Lancaster) Young
Funeral services for Mrs. Carolyn (Lancaster) Young, 59, of Nashville, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Ovle Tinch officiating. Burial was in Coffee cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Young died Monday, Jan. 14 at her home. She was a cashier for BP and a member of Grace Baptist Church in Alpine.

Born June 17, 1942, in Louisville, KY, she was the daughter of Daniel Malcolm and Christine (Plumlee) Lancaster of Livingston.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Jerry Young, Nashville; a son, Steven Young, Crossville; two brothers, Robert Lancaster and Charles Lancaster, both of Livingston; and a grandson.

Pallbearers were Steve Lancaster, David Lancaster, Jason Lancaster, Chris Lancaster, Tim McDonald, and Mark Bilbrey.

Claude Thomas Winningham
Graveside services for Mr. Claude Thomas Winningham, 79, of Yardley, PA, were conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, with Bro. Thomas C. Winningham officiating. Burial was in Hoover cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Winningham died Wednesday, Jan. 9 at his home. He was a master machinist. Born June 22, 1922, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Jonah and Sarah (Stover) Winningham.

Survivors include his wife, Anna Mae Winningham, Yardley; a son, Thomas C. Winningham, Elizabethton; a daughter, Diana Bottrel, Yardley; a brother, Clarence Winningham, Detroit, MI; a sister, Cleo Daniels, Livingston; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Charles West
Funeral services for Mr. Charles West, 75, of Monterey, were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey with Rev. Bobby Floyd officiating. Burial, with military honors, was in Welch Memorial cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. West died Tuesday, Jan. 15 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and a member of the Monterey VFW Post 6277.

Born March 25, 1926, in Monterey, he was the son of the late Charlie and Maudena (Smith) West. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Horace West, Carlen West, and Jackie West.

Survivors include a sister, Opal Bussell, Albuquerque, NM; and 13 nieces and nephews, three of which are local, Joyce Norrod, Donna Copley, and Danny West, all of Monterey.

WILLIAM CLAUDE CANTRELL
Funeral services for Mr. William Claude Cantrell, 78, of Livingston, were conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 3, 1999 from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Dr. Lyle Anderson and Rev. Dee Anderson officiating. Burial was in Overton County Memorial Gardens with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Cantrell, building and grounds supervisor for the Pennfield School District, died Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at Cookeville Regional Hospital.

Born October 6, 1920, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Escue and Argie Matthews Cantrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Vada Davis and Claudia Cantrell; and a grandson, Charles B. Knowles.

He was a member of First Christian Church Disciples of Christ and a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWI.

Survivors include his wife, Stella Cantrell, Livingston; a son and daughter-in-law, Troy and Jackie Cantrell, Dandridge; a daughter, Claudine Knowles, Knoxville; two brothers-in-law, Jack Huddleston and R.G. Huddleston, both of Livingston; a sister, Ruby Watkins, Allons; a sister-in-law, Carlene Wright, Muncie, IN; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Cantrell, Christopher Cantrell, and Scott Knowles.

Pallbearers were Paul Watkins, Fred Watkins, Christopher Cantrell, Scott Knowles, James Huddleston, and Steve Huddleston.

MARY LOU LEDBETTER
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Lou Ledbetter, 77, of Miamisburg, OH, and a native of Livingston, were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 8 from the chapel of the Dalton Funeral Home in Germantown, OH, with Rev. Frank Kelly officiating. Burial was in the Highland cemetery in Ohio.

Mrs. Ledbetter died Friday, June 4, 1999.

Born January 24, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Thomas F. & Mollie Erness (Bilbrey) McCulley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Jim Ledbetter, and a brother, Herman McCulley.

Survivors include her husband, Freeman D. Ledbetter; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Lew Wilcox of Germantown, OH; a granddaughter, Jennifer Wilcox, Kettering, OH; a grandson, Jamie Wilcox, Germantown, OH; two sisters, Lillie Parrigan, Springfield, and Willie Crabtree, Sparta; a special niece, Joann Zornes of Tipp City, OH, and several other nieces and nephews.
