Charles E. (Roddy) Breeding
Funeral services for Mr. Charles E. (Roddy) Breeding, 74, of Rickman, were conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 22, 1999, from the Rickman Chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Comer McGuire officiating. Burial was in Zion Hill cemetery with the Rickman Chapel of Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Breeding, a retired machinist, died Monday, June 21, 1999, at Livingston Regional Hospital.

Born April 4, 1925, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Tucker Breeding and Etta Bilbrey Breeding. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd Breeding and Carl Breeding. He attended Zion Hill United Methodist Church and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Harp Breeding, Rickman; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeff and Kathy Breeding, Cookeville, and Gary Breeding, Rickman; two grandchildren, Ross Breeding and Erin Breeding; two sisters, Opal White and Dorothy Matthews, both of Rickman; several nieces and nephews; and a very special friend, Jim Sullivan.

Pallbearers were Jimmy Waddey, Timmy Pendergrass, Sam Pendergrass, Johnny Pendergrass, Fred Lee Ashburn, and Cleo Swallows.

Mavel Joyce Denney
Funeral services for Mrs. Mavel Joyce Denney, 66, of Cookeville, were conducted at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 20, 1999, from the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home in Cookeville with Bro. James Haines and Bro. James Lynch officiating. Burial was in Double Springs cemetery with Whitson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Denney, employee of Russell Stover Candies, died Thursday, June 17, 1999, at Cookeville Regional Hospital.

Born December 3, 1932, in Cooper, KY, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Jane (Carter) Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceeded in death by her sister, Reva Self; and an infant brother, Melvin Smith.

She was a charter member and wife of the founder of Faith United Baptist Church in New Castle, IN.

Survivors include her husband, Junior C. Denney, Cookeville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Gail Denney, Livingston, and Arnold Dewey 'Duke' and Debbie Denney, Cookeville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Jerry Wattenberger, New Castle, IN, and Nancy Jane and Steve Kelly, Cookeville; two sisters, Ila Jones, Cooper, KY, and Vela Stephenson, Monticello, KY; two brothers, Nile Smith, Monticello, KY, and Kenneth Smith, Dayton, OH; 11 grandchildren, Jerry Wattenbarger Jr., Angel Renee Lambert, Nathan Wattenbarger, Ryan Walden, Lacy Arnold, Kelly Hammock, Chris Hammock, Crystal Hammock, Amber Lynn Smith, Racquel Kelly, and Tonya Kelly; and five great-grandchildren, Issac Lambert, Ethan Hammock, Chezney Hammock, Bailey Hammock and Calen Arnold.

Dr. Norman Roy Atnip
Funeral services for Dr. Norman Roy Atnip, 86, of Smithville, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, from the chapel of Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in Smithville with Bro. Bobby Colvert and Bro. Archie King officiating. Masonic services were held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at the Love-Cantrell Funeral Home. Burial was in the Whorton Springs cemetery in Smithville with Love-Cantrell Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Dr. Atnip died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home after an extended illness. He was a retired Doctor of Chiropractic who graduated in 1937 from the National University of Health Sciences (formerly the National College of Chiropractic, Chicago, Illinois) and began his practice in Smithville in 1939, a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, served as past president of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association, Federation of Tennessee Chiropractors, Exchange Club of Smithville, Smithville Lions Club, past president and director of the Smithville Junior Chamber of Commerce, past director of the National Chiropractic Association and the American Chiropractic Association, served on the board of directors of the Center Hill Broadcasting Corporation (WJLE Radio), a founding director of the Citizen's Bank of Smithville, a member of the National College of Chiropractic Alumni Association, served as team physician for many years for the DeKalb County High School athletic teams, a U.S. Navy Veteran serving in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters of WWII, was 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Master Mason, and an elder in the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Born April 11, 1915, in DeKalb County, he was the son of the late David J. and Lassie Mai (McGee) Atnip. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Marquerite Puckett and two brothers, Dr. Eric C. Atnip and David J. Atnip Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Sara Jannette (Cantrell) Atnip, Smithville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Robert Roy and Guylene Atnip, Smithville, and Dr. N. Max and Patti Atnip, Cookeville; a sister, Frances Pendarvis, Livingston; seven grandchildren, Lisa Tramel and Tara Atnip, both of Smithville, Robert Atnip Jr., Shelbyville, Jared Atnip, Panama City, FL, Rebecca Vincent, Jennifer Atnip, and Cryste Atnip, all of Cookeville; two great grandchildren, Chase Tramel and Caleb Tramel, both of Smithville.

Pallbearers were Wayne Atnip, Barry Atnip, Dr. Alan Atnip, David Martin, Billy Martin, and David Wytt Davis.

Arley Jackson Smith
Funeral services for Mr. Arley Jackson Smith, 98, of Livingston, were conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, from the chapel of Livingston Funeral Home with Bro. Aron Dillon and Mike Ledbetter officiating. Burial was in the Ruth Chapel cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements. Masonic Rites were conducted by the Livingston Masonic Lodge on Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the chapel of the Livingston Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. He was a farmer, concrete finisher, of the Methodist faith, and a mason.

Born February 22, 1903, in Overton County, he was the son of the late John and Vela (Holt) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida (Johnson) Smith; two sons, John Smith and Coy Smith; two brothers, Deloy Smith and Harlan Smith; and three sisters, Rhoda Wright, Charity Sidwell and Eula Taylor.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Junior and Sue Smith, Alexandria, IN; a daughter, Willie Hunter, Livingston, seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and a special granddaughter and her husband, Peggy and Shirley Dillon.

Pallbearers were Jason Hunter, Earl Hunter, Dale Smith, Doug Smith, Johnny Marvin Smith, and Johnny Ray Smith. Serving as honorary pallbearers were Charlie Ray, Keeton Cooper, Eric Dillon, and Ed Long.

Mary Rachel (Guffey) Pemberton
Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Rachel (Guffey) Pemberton, 76, of Byrdstown, were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, from the chapel of Byrdstown Memorial Funeral Home. Burial was in the Story cemetery in Byrdstown with Byrdstown Memorial Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Pemberton died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Robert Sterling and Minnie Vee (McKinley) Guffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Early Gay Pemberton.

Survivors include two sons, Earl Garfield Pemberton, Kokomo, IN, and George Robert Pemberton, Goshen, KY; two daughters, Susan Barnes, Livingston, and Brenda Hassler, Knoxville; two brothers, Herbert M. Guffey, Albany, KY, and Eugene Guffey, New Castle, IN; a sister, Betty Weddle, New Castle; and eight grandchildren, Amber, Gina, Tim, Heather, Sterling, Racquel, Megan and Brittany.

Delma Vada Nation
Funeral services for Mrs. Delma Vada Nation, 83, of Cookeville, were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2001, from the chapel of Speck Funeral Home with Rev. Hillier Duke officiating. Burial was in Fellowship cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Nation died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Masters Health Care Center in Algood. She was a retired factory worker and a member of the First Christian Church of Cookeville.

Born October 20, 1917, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late William and Maudie (Sells) Richardson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie T. Nation; a son Carlie Nation; a sister, Donna Mullins; and two step-children, Charlie Nation and Alene Richardson.

Survivors include two sons, Robert Nation, Lubbock, TX, and Coy Nation, Livingston; two daughters, Catherine Bowers, Algood, and Connie Dishman, Rickman; five brothers, Delton Richardson, Rickman, Dennis Richardson, Livonia, MI, Denver Richardso and Doil Richardson, both of Sparta, and Dexter Richardson, Missouri; three sisters, Desma Harrell, Detroit, MI, Delise Humphrey, Algood, and Doris Harvey, Sparta; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Haskell McCormick
Funeral services for Mr. Haskell McCormick, 71, of Anderson, IN, were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2001, from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home in Monterey, with Rev. Nolan Cantrell officiating. Burial was in the Harris Chapel cemetery with Goff Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. McCormick died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at his home. He was retired from the General Motors Corporation.

Born March 28, 1930, in Overton County, he was the son of the late Tom and Ethel (Swallows) McCormick.

Survivors include his wife, Ila (Ray) McCormick, Anderson; a son and daughter-in-law, Dairel and Angie McCormick, Anderson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Bob Ellingwood, and Debbie and Steve Alford, all of Anderson; two sisters, Geneva Cooper and Juanita McCormick, both of Rickman; a brother, Otis "Buck" McCormick, Algood; five grandchildren, Devon McCormick, Jaret McCormick, Tara Swango, Rebecca Swango, and Derek Swango; one great grandchild, Damien Johnson; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward Ward Lee
Funeral services for Mr. Edward Ward Lee, 57, of Nashville, were conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, from the chapel of Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Dean Sims officiating. Burial was in the Polk Memorial Gardens with Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Lee died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at his home. A native of Gainesboro, he served in the Tennessee National Guard, and was a member of the Church of God. He was the son of the late Dewey and Della (Masters) Lee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Malugin.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie (Matheny) Lee, Nashville; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Kimberly Shaun Cummings and Nichole and Larry Lehmann, all of Nashville, and Amanda and David Mistro, Mt. Juliet; a son and daughter-in-law, Ricky Ward and Brenda Lee, Nashville; a brother and sister-in-law, Virgil and Linda Lee, Cookeville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Virgie Ramsey, Hilham, and Louise and Earl Zischke, Ladylake, FL, a brother-in-law and his wife, Wade and Katie Matheny, Columbia; a sister-in-law, Dotsy Hight, Columbia; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Wade Matheny, Tommy Hight, Larry Lehmann, Lionel Ward, Frank McBride, Jimmy Bassham, Johnny Matheny, and Blake Hight. Serving as honorary pallbearers were employees of McBride Market, employees of Northway Piggly Wiggly, and James Pillar.

Clay Bowman
Graveside services for Mr. Clay Bowman, 89, of Gainesboro, were conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 12, 2001, in the Pharris cemetery in the McCoinsville Community of Jackson County with Bro. Jimmy Anderson officiating. Anderson Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Bowman died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was a resident of the Dudney's Hill Community of Jackson County and a member of the Dudney's Hill Church of Christ.

Born May 8, 1912, in Jackson County, he was the son of the late Nathaniel and Betty (McCormick) Bowman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline (Pharris) Bowman; a brother, Ralph Bowman; and two sisters, Mamie Ellis and Johnie Roberson.

Survivors include his wife, Callie (Ruble) (Mick) Bowman, Gainesboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Billy Brown, Mount Juliet; two step-sons, Robert Mick, Livingston, and Roger Mick, Fairborn, OH; a brother, Fred Bowman, Gainesboro; a sister, Mildred Moss, Cookeville; two grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and six step-great grandchildren.

Lewis Archie Scott
Funeral services for Mr. Lewis Archie Scott, 90, of Hilham, were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 13, 2001, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home with Minister Bill Coe officiating. Burial was in the Ray Williams cemetery with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Scott died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Cumberland River Hospital. He was a farmer.

Born April 9, 1911, in Celina, he was the son of the late Albert Lewis and Mattie (Arms) Scott. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Annie Olyne (Smith) Scott; a son, Phelmon Scott; and two daughters, Marlene Anderson and Alta Irene Scott.

Survivors include two sons, Archie Bud Scott, Hilham, and Mitchell Scott, Nashville; two daughters, Wanda Gay Dyer, and Louise Watson, both of Tompkinsville, KY; 22 grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren.

Wilma Jean Rhoten
Funeral services for Mrs. Wilma Jean Rhoten, 66, of Hilham, were conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 14, 2001, from the chapel of Upton Funeral Home with Minister Bill Ramsey officiating. Burial was in the McDonald cemetery in Hilham with Upton Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Rhoten died Thursday, July 12, 2001, at Cumberland River Hospital. She was a homemaker.

Born June 18, 1935, in Hilham, she was the daughter of the late John Thomas and Annie B. (Boles) Pritchett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Rhoten.

Survivors include a brother, Willie Pritchett, Ashland City; and three sisters, Lizzie Brown, Dorothy Hammock, and Hazel Bailey, all of Celina.

Herschel M. Gillentine
Graveside services for Mr. Herschel M. Gillentine, 88, of Leesburg, FL, will be conducted at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, July 18, 2001, with Rev. Newsome Harvey officiating. Burial will be in Good Hope cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Gillentine died Sunday, July 14, 2001, at Leesburg Nursing Home. He was a retired motel owner and operator and U.S. Navy Veteran.

Born November 15, 1912, in Overton County, he was the son of the late William L. and Maggie (Carr) Gillentine. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane M. (Bunnell) Gillentine; five brothers, Lee Gillentine, Corbit Gillentine, Hoy Gillentine, W.L. "Fate" Gillentine, and Frank Gillentine; and three sisters, Dellah Hembree, Myrtle Smith, and Hazel Schmink.

Survivors include two special nieces, Doris (Smith) Hawkins, Old Hickory, and Carol (Franklin) Gillentine, Westland, MI; and several other nieces and nephews.

Myrtle Irene Brown
Funeral services for Mrs. Myrtle Irene Brown, 83, of Rickman, were conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2001, from the chapel of Harris Chapel Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Roy Harris and Rev. Roger Cooper officiating. Burial was in the Harris Chapel cemetery with Speck Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Brown died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Livingston Regional Hospital. She was a housewife and a member of the Harris Chapel Freewill Baptist Church.

Born November 13, 1917, in Overton County, she was the daughter of the late Luther and Susie (McDonald) Eldridge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elanza Brown; two sons, Junior Brown and Gary Brown; and three sisters, Etta Jane Ledbetter, Linnie Bell Danner, and Hassie Swallows.

Survivors include six sons and daughters-in-law, Melvin and Golda Brown, and Donald and Heidi Brown, all of Rickman, Billy Joe and Janice Brown, Hanceville, AL, Ernest and Pam Brown, Mayland, Doug and Cornetta Brown, Hanging Limb, and Danny and Joyce Brown, Brentwood; four daughters and sons-in-law, Fannie Mae and Albert Harris, Algood, Joyce and Beecher Brown, Monterey, Janice and Bill Burks, Hilham, and Carol and Phil Dunn, Baxter; a daughter-in-law, Carol Brown, Akron, OH; a brother, J.B. Eldridge, Louellen, KY; a sister, Velma Lee Ledbetter, Livingston; 25 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and a special niece, Earline Dickson. Pallbearers were Dennis Brown, Arlis Brown, David Brown, Adam Brown, Lance Brown, Brent Brown, Rick Harris, David England, Dewayne Bumbalough, Greg Bumbalough, and Thomas Burks.

Gela Ann (Pedigo) Philpott
Funeral services for Mrs. Gela Ann (Pedigo) Philpott, 37, of Bardstown, KY., and formerly of Overton County, will be conducted Thursday, July 12, 2001, at 10:20 a.m. from the chapel of New Salem Baptist Church in Cox's Creek, KY, with Bro. Bruce Treon officiating. Burial will be in the New Salem Baptist Church cemetery with Greenwell-Houghlin Northside Funeral Home, of Bardstown, in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Philpott died Wednesday, July 4, 2001. She was a member of the Miller's Chapel Christian Church of Alpine, a former employee of Wilson Brothers Auto Center in Bardstown, and owner and operator, with her husband, of Mr. Muffler #2 in Louisville, KY. She was the daughter of Jack and Joyce (Ringley) Carr, of Alpine.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, David Philpott, Bardstown; three children, Nikita Pedigo, Nathan Pedigo, and Kendra Philpott, all of Bardstown; a step-daughter, Melissa Philpott, Brandenburg, KY; a sister, Gena Marie Livingston, Rickman; a brother, Dallas E. Carr, Rickman; paternal grandmother, Zona Carr, Monroe; maternal grandmother, V. Ethel Ringley, Alpine; and mother and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jay Philpott, Brandenburg.
