Elizabeth Payton
Elizabeth Payton of Memphis, and a former resident of Chattanooga died Thursday, Feb. 12, 1998, in a nursing home there. She was 98.

She was an employee of Burlington Mills for 30 years and the widow of John M. Payton.

Survivors include six daughters, Toby Graves, Memphis, Alma Baskette, Margaret Grayson, Chattanooga, Johnnie Ruth Hudson, South Carolina, and Mildred Bryant and Marie Jackson, Atlanta; 21 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Chattanooga Second Presbyterian Church.

Burial will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

Arrangements by Family Heritage Casket Gallery, Memphis.

Ernestine Peacock
SPRING CITY, Tenn. - Ernestine D. Peacock died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at her home. She was 67.

She was a homemaker, and a member of First Baptist Church of Spring City.

She was the daughter of the late, Gertrude Drinkard; and the widow of Robert Peacock.

Survivors include her father, Vidma Drinkard; Thomasville, Ala.; two daughters, Karen Peacock, Sugarland, Texas, and Brenda Allen, Daphne, Ala.; one brother, Gary Drinkard, Spring City; and two grandchildren.

Graveside services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Pine Crest cemetery, Mobile, Ala.

Visitation will be at Radney Funeral Home from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Contributions may be made to the 'Friends of the Library' in Spring City or to the 'Vision 2000 fund' of the Spring City First Baptist Church.

Local arrangements are by Vaughn Funeral Home.

John Peck
John Peck of Signal Mountain died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at his home. He was 80.

Arrangements will be announced by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Dorothy Pendergrass
WHITWELL, Tenn. - Dorothy Tate Pendergrass died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, in a Chattanooga hospital. She was 76.

She was the daughter of the late Cecil L. and Maude Ross Tate and had taught school at Sequatchie County Elementary for 32 years.

She was a member of Red Hill United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ottis Basil Pendergrass; one son, Jimmy Ray Pendergrass; and one brother, Harold L. Tate.

Survivors include two sisters, Adyelene Billingsley, Whitwell, and Margaret Billingsley, Dunlap; one brother, Ralph E. Tate, Whitwell; and two grandchildren.

Arrangements will be announced by Rogers Funeral Home, Jasper.

David Pennell
MONTEAGLE, Tenn. - David M. Pennell of Roanoke, Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, at his home. He was 20.

Survivors include his parents, Bill and Anita Pennell, Roanoke; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John S. Pennell, Wilmette, Ill.; and Mr. and Mrs. D.V. Northcutt of Altamont, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Cumberland Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clara Perry
Clara McClure 'Aunt Clara' Perry died recently in a local hospital.

A member of Anitoch Primitive Baptist Church, she served on the senior usher board and the Willing Workers Club, and was a retiree of Dr. Fox Dental Associates.

Survivors include a brother, Elder James Penny, Chattanooga; three sisters, Pearline Patton, Dayton, Ohio, Lucille Bell, Chattanooga, Lessie Ann Gordon, Huntsville, Ala.; adopted daughter, Sherry Thomas; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at noon at Antioch Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Kevin L. Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Avondale Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

W.T. Petitt
DECATUR, Tenn. - W.T. Petitt died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at his home. He was 64.

He was a member of the Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Cottonport, Tenn., and the Meigs Masonic Lodge 213 F&AM.; He was a well-known golfer and bowler and worked for A.C.I. in Athens for over 20 years as an asphalt plant technician. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife, Freda Lawson Petitt; one son, Bobby Petitt, Nashville; three daughters, Debbie Humphreys, Niota, Tenn., Gayle Petitt, Athens, Tenn., and Joni Petitt, Decatur; one brother, Floyd Petitt Jr., Decatur; five sisters, Linda Bryan, Laura Lee Scott and Crissy Bennett, all of Decatur, Wanda Bell, Chattanooga, and Parmer Messer, Birchwood; four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Bowers Funeral Home in Decatur, with the Rev. Jerry Plaster officiating.

Burial will be in the Decatur City cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Bob Pickering
JASPER, Tenn. - Bob Pickering died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, in his home. He was 61.

He was the general manager of the Sequatchie Valley Electric Cooperative since 1986.

He was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church.

A graduate of Tennessee Technological University, he was a systems engineer for the Meriwether Lewis Electric Co-operative in Centerville, Tenn., from 1966 to 1986.

He was a former employee of the FCC Monitoring Station in Grand Island, Neb.

He was the son of the late George Pickering.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Pickering, Jasper; two daughters, Shannon Pickering, Nashville, Tenn., Leigh Ware, Jasper; mother, Dorothy Pickering, Clarksville, Tenn., one brother, William Pickering, Clarksville, Tenn.; and one sister, Linda Beasley, Hartsville, Tenn.

Services will be today in McKendree United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. with the Rev. David Tabor officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Clarksville on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. CST at McKendree United Methodist Church.

Contributions may be made to Marion County Ministries, P.O. Box 681, Sequatchie, Tn. 37374.

Arrangements are by Rogers Funeral Home, South Pittsburg.

Jean Pickering
Jean K. Pickering, formerly of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. She was 88.

She was the widow of G.B. Pickering.

Survivors include her daughter, Beverly Kennedy; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Buck officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Thursday from 1 p.m. until the time of service.

James Pickett
DUNLAP, Tenn. - James 'Bill' Pickett of Crossville, Tenn., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, in an area hospital. He was 61.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky Pickett, Tim Pickett, both of Soddy-Daisy; three sisters, Ava Spandler, Dunlap, Reita Vandergriff, Judy Nave, both of Signal Mountain; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. CST in Putnam-Reed Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the New Era cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. CST.

Geneva Ponder
Geneva E. Ponder of East Brainerd died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at her home. She was 75.

A native of Chickamauga, Ga., she had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga area.

She was a Baptist, the widow of George Ponder; and the grandmother of the late Jennifer R. Smith.

Survivors include a daughter, Mattie Tharp, Rossville; two sons, James R. Nash, Ooltewah, and George D. Ponders, Louisiana; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with Chaplain Pat Davis officiating.

Burial will follow in Chattanooga National cemetery.

The family will receive friends all day today at the funeral home.
