Lena Brown
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Lena C. Brown died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1998, in an area nursing home. She was 95.

Services will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Cleveland First Baptist Church with Dr. Allan Lockerman and other ministers officiating.

Memorial contribuitons may be made to First Baptist Church building fund, 99 Central Ave., N.E. Cleveland, TN 37311.

Arrangements are by Fike Funeral Home.

Myrtle Brown
JASPER, Tenn. - Myrtle H. Brown died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in an area hospital.

Survivors include her husband, Ray Brown; two sons, Herman R. Brown, Whitwell, Tenn., and Oscar Brown, Jasper; one sister, Polly Hatfield, Hixson; one brother, Herman Henry, Signal Mountain; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. CST at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Funeral Home in Jasper, with the Rev. A.C. Roy Terry and other ministers officiating.

Burial will be in the Red Hill cemetery.

The family will receive friends today after 10 a.m. CST at the funeral home.

Thomas Brown
Thomas Reid Brown of Washington, N.C., and formerly of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 1998, at his home. He was 35.

He was the son of the late Dr. Reid L. Brown, and the brother of the late Richard Brown.

He had lived in Washington for the past five years and was an antique dealer.

He operated the Reid House of Antiques and was a member of Rivermont Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Brown; one brother, David Brown, Cape May, N.J.; one sister, Alisan Taylor, Signal Mountain.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Oakdale cemetery in Washingtin, with Dr. Robert Morris and the Rev. Monte Johnston officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 211 West Second Street, Washington, NC 27889.

Arrangements are by Paul Funeral Home, Washington.

Veda Brown
JASPER, Tenn. - Mrs. Veda Berry Brown died Friday, Jan. 23, 1998, at a local hospital. She was 102.

Services will be today at 2 p.m. CST at McKendree United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Tabor and David Harr officiating.

Burial will be in Pine Grove cemetery.

Arrangements are by Rogers Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to McKendree UMC Building Fund or The Hosanna Community, P.O. Box 11483, Chattanooga, TN 37401.

William Brown
William Howard Brown of Signal Mountain died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in a local nursing home. He was 77.

A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Dr. Marshall St. John officiating.

A memorial service will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at Wayside Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wayside Presbyterian Church Building Fund or the Signal Mountain Christian School, 2502 Fairmount Pike, Signal Mountain, TN 37377.

Andrew Bryant
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Andrew Nicole Scotton Bryant, formerly of Cleveland, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, in Atlanta.

Arrangements will be announced by M.D. Dotson and Sons Funeral Home, Cleveland.

Eugene Bryant
Eugene Vernon 'Gen-O' Bryant died Thursday, Feb. 12 1998, at a local hospital. He was 40.

Survivors include two daughters, Lagenia Moore, Shannon Walker, both of Chattanooga; mother, Dorothy Bryant, father, Clarence Bryant, both of Chattanooga; and two sisters, Yvonne McDowell, Tracy Mason, both of Chattanooga; two brothers, Wendell Bryant, Dewayne Bryant, both of Chattanooga.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home with the Rev. Lurone Jennings officiating.

Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Garden.

Visitation will be today after noon in the funeral home.

Baxter Burdette
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Baxter Burdette, a longtime dairy farmer and chairman of the Third Congressional District of the Tennessee Republican Party for 10 years, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at his home here. He was 78.

Mr. Burdette, a native of Birchwood, was a graduate of UT-Knoxville and an Army veteran of World War II. He worked for the University of Missouri County Extension Service for five years and was a dairy farmer in Birchwood for more than 25 years.

He was an executive member of the founding board of directors of Dairymen Inc., a member of the Meigs County Court for six years and was retired from the U.S. Food Inspection Service.

He was the husband of the late Earlene Morrison Burdette and the brother of the late Carson L. Burdette.

Survivors include four daughters, Becky Bauerle, Vandalia, Ill., Terry Beesley and Bobbie Burdette, both of Memphis, and Moniko Burdette, Albany, Ga.; six grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the North Chapel of Buckner-Rush Funeral Home with the Rev. Glen Isler officiating.

Burial will be in McInturf cemetery in Meigs County.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Charles Burton
Charles Burton, formerly of Chattanooga, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, in Los Angeles.

The U.S. Air Force veteran was an attorney.

Survivors include two sisters, Bernice Garrett and Dorothy Swafford, both of Chattanooga; and brother, Henry Burton, Atlanta.

The funeral will be Saturday in Los Angeles.

Arrangements are announced locally by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

George Cafego
George Cafego of Knoxville, a former all-America football player and coach at the University of Tennessee and the father of Donald Gary Cafego of Chattanooga, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998. He was 82.

During Tennessee's Rose Bowl season of 1939, he made headlines around the nation and was affectionately known as 'Bad News' Cafego. He was later inducted into the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, the West Virginia Hall of Fame and the Tennessee Hall of Fame.

A native of West Virginia, he graduated from UT in 1940.

Besides stints in the U.S. Army during World War II and in professional football as a player, he also coached at Furman University, the University of Wyoming and the University of Arkansas before joining the staff of UT Coach Bowden Wyatt in 1955.

He served as a member of the UT coaching staff for an uninterrupted period of 31 years. Although he coached single-wing tailbacks and defensive backs, it was as a coach of kickers that he gained nationwide acclaim.

After his retirement from UT, National Football League teams frequently called on him for advice with their kicking problems.

He was a member of Erin Presbyterian Church in Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by seven brothers, Mike, Steve, Tommy, Frank, John, Joseph and Paul Cafego; and a sister, Elizabeth Miller.

Survivors other than his son include his wife, Audry Stanfill Cafego; daughter, Rosalea Cafego, both of Knoxville; and two grandchildren, Nancy and Emily Cafego, both of Chattanooga.

Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rose Mortuary, Mann Heritage Chapel, Knoxville, with the Rev. John Stuart officiating.

Burial will be at High Lawn Memorial cemetery in Oak HIll, W.Va.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the George Cafego Memorial Scholarship Fund, in care of the Oak Hill High School Alumni Association, P.O. Box 462, Oak Hill, W.Va. 25901, or Erin Presbyterian Church, 200 Lockett Road, Knoxville, TN 37919.

James Cantrell
ATHENS, Tenn. - James Donald 'J.D.' Cantrell of Englewood, Tenn., died Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, in a Knoxville, Tenn., hospital. He was 48.

A native of Mayfield Ky., he was a lifelong resident of McMinn County.

He was an employee of J. Bentley Enterprises and a former employee of CTS Transportation.

A Vietnam War veteran, he served in the U.S. Marines and was a member of the VFW.

He was the son of the late J.B. Cantrell.

Survivors include his mother, Berdie Cantrell, Englewood; wife, Neoma Cantrell, Englewood; one daughter, Sarah Cantrell, Englewood; two sons, James Benton Cantrell II, Englewood, James Wesley Cantrell, Englewood; and two sisters, Gwen Chrisman, Englewood, Janis Simpson, Englewood.

Graveside services were to be today at 11 a.m. in Sunrise cemetery with the Rev. Andy Hamilton officiating.

Arrangements are by Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home.
