Hal Carter
Hal Carter, an eight-year resident of Soddy-Daisy, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, in a local hospital. He was 61.

He was sales manager for Cissell Manufacturing Co. based in Louisville, Ky.; an Army veteran; and a member of Soddy-Daisy Masonic Lodge, Alhambra Shrine Temple, and the Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy B. Carter; two daughters, Cindy Thorn and Sybil Smith, both of Chicago, Ill.; four stepsons, John T. and Randall Beech, both of Chapel Hill, Tenn., Oakley Beech, Las Vegas, Nev., and Stanley Beech, Murfreesboro, Tenn.; brother, Don Carter, Chicago, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

There will be no services.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alhambra Shrine Children's Hospital, 1000 Alhambra Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Arrangements are by the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Judge Bill Ables
SOUTH PITTSBURG, Tenn. - William McKinley 'Bill' Ables Jr., a prominent South Pittsburg attorney and judge, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in a Nashville hospital. He was 72.

Mr. Ables practiced law in his hometown of South Pittsburg for 47 years. He was admitted to practice in all courts in Tennessee, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit of Cincinnati, the U.S. Supreme Court, the National Labor Relations Board and the Treasury Department. He had tried cases in all those courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. He had numerous cases reported on in the 1960s.

He also served three terms as city judge of South Pittsburg; was a former member of the Republican State Executive Committee; was a former member and chairman of the Marion County School Board, where he served for 51/2 years; was a past president of the Marion County Chamber of Commerce; and was a former member of the Marion County Election Commission.

He was currently serving as a city judge of New Hope and an administrative law judge for the Tennessee Department of Education.

He was a graduate of Castle Heights Military School, the University of Chattanooga and the University of Virginia Law School.

His professional memberships included the Marion County, Tennessee and the American Bar Associations; the Tennessee and American Trial Lawyers and American Arbitration Association; the United States District Court Historical Society and the American Judicature Society.

He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of South Pittsburg.

Mr. Ables was active in Republican politics and worked in the U.S. House and Senate campaigns of Bill Brock, Congressman Lamar Baker, Gov. Lamar Alexander, Gov. Winfield Dunn and President Richard Nixon.

He was a member of the Masonic Order; a 50-year member of Marion Lodge 515; the Scottish Rite Masons; the York Rite Masons; the Alhambra Temple Shriners; the American Legion; the VFW; and the Marion County Sertoma Club.

He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship Massachusetts during World War II.

Mr. Ables was preceded in death by his wife, Hartwell Brown Ables; his parents, Judge William and Dr. Iva B. Ables; and one brother, Jerome C. Ables.

Survivors include one daughter, Dr. Lynn Ables, Knoxville; two sons, William Ables III, Chattanooga, and Dr. Samuel Ables, Arrora Grande, Calif.; six grandchildren; and a brother, Charles R. 'Bob' Ables.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in South Pittsburg with the Rev. John Bonner officiating.

Masonic graveside services will be held at Cumberland View cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. today and two hours before the service Wednesday at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Funeral Home, Kimball.

Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church of South Pittsburg.

Helen Anderson
Helen Anderson of Apison, formerly of East Ridge died today at her home. She was 70.

Arrangements will be announced by Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Hilda Anderson
TRACY CITY, Tenn. - Hilda Scholer Anderson died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in a Nashville hospital. She was 81.

She was the widow of Claude E. Anderson.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia A. Stricker, Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal, Tracy City, with the Rev. David Archibald officiating.

Burial was in Swiss Colony cemetery, Gruetli-Laager, Tenn.

Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Foster and Son Funeral Home, Tracy City.

Julia Andrews
Julia R. Andrews died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at the residence. She was 77.

The Philadelphia native had lived in Chattanooga since 1969. She was a Northminister Presbyterian Church member and an American Cancer Society volunteer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Col. George Andrews Sr.

Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Quinn, Hampton, Va., and Gay Cook, Harrison; two sons, George Andrews, Hixson, and Roger Andrews, Indianapolis; a sister, Dorothy Hauze, Chattanooga; and six grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with the Rev. Hugh Jones officiating.

Burial will be in National cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 850 Fortwood Place, Chattanooga, TN 37403.

William Appleton
William B. Appleton died Tuesday, Jan. 20, 1998.

Services will be at noon Monday at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Tolbert and the Rev. David Rutledge officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the Avondale Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Charlena Appling
Charlena U. Appling died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at a local hospital. She was 25.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Charteria Appling; and a grandmother, Agnes Abernathy.

Survivors include two daughters, Cormetra Hardy and DorShelle Appling; two sons, DeAngelo Lovingood and Charquel Appling, all of Chattanooga; mother, Gloria Appling, Chattanooga; father, Willie Appling, Ohio; grandparents, Theodore Abernathy and Ruthie Appling, both of Chattanooga; a brother, Rodney Broadnax; four half brothers, Rodney and Kerry Lomnick and Chris Appling, all of Chattanooga, and Willie Black, Knoxville; four sisters, LaShonda Appling and Bianca Merrell, both of Chattanooga, LaRhonda and LeAva Appling, both of Ohio.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Highland Memorial Gardens with the Rev. William Pride officiating.

Arrangements are by Taylor Funeral Home.

William Austin
CLEVELAND, Tenn. - William 'Smiley' Austin of Cleveland died Monday morning, Feb. 9, 1998, following an automobile accident. He was 60.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He had worked as an electrical contractor for many years and also operated a commercial egg farm with his wife for 20 years.

He was the son of the late Lester and Laura Austin.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Mitchell Austin; one son, Willie Austin; two granddaughters; five sisters, Marie Caughron, Kathleen Gentry, Carolyn Arthur, Sandy Epperson, all of Cleveland, and Teresa Williams, Ringgold, Ga.; and two brothers, James 'Red' Austin and Bobby Edwards, all of Cleveland.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home, Cleveland, with Pastor Jim Cox officiating.

Burial will follow in Lee cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mattie Autry
Mattie Autry died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, in a local hospital. She was 86.

Arrangements will be announced by the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Franklin Baber
DAYTON, Tenn. - Franklin McDonald Baber died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, in a Rhea County hospital. He was 64.

A native of Graysville, Ga., he was the son of George H. and Betsy Jones Baber.

He had lived in Kingston, Tenn., for 15 years before returning to Rhea County two years ago.

A graduate of Rhea County High School, he was a retired shift chemist from TVA, a U.S. Air Firce veteran of the Korean War, and a member of American Legion Post 100 in Dayton.

Survivors include two sons, Christopher F. Baber and Ned Baber, both of Kingston; two daughters, Rebecca Baber, Dayton, and Nancy Hill, Madisonville; and four grandchildren.

Services will be today at 8 p.m. at Vanderwall Funeral Home with Dr. Joseph C. Graves officiating.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Buttram cemetery, Dayton.

The family will receive friends today after 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
