Bob Myers
Robert D. 'Bob' Myers, a driving force in amateur wrestling in Chattanooga, across the South and the nation died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at his Hixson home.

Mr. Myers, a University of Chattanooga football player in the 1940's and UTC wrestling's strength coach at the time of his death, was inducted into the UTC Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998.

A past member of the United States National Wrestling Hall of Fame Board of Governors in Stillwater, Okla., Mr. Myers played a key role in bringing national and international wrestling to Chattanooga for the past three decades.

'Bob was one of the true supporters of amateur wrestling,' said Myron Roderick, president of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and former wrestling coach at Oklahoma State. 'He loved the sport, loved the kids and did everything he could to foster that interest in Chattanooga and the United States.'

Mr. Myers was instrumental in the start of the Southern Open Wrestling tournament three decades ago. He also was on the Chattanooga organizing committee for the U.S.-Russia wrestling dual in the spring of 1971, which was the first appearance in the South by Soviet Union wrestlers.

His major achievement in amateur wrestling came when he served as executive director of the local organizing committee for the 1993 and 1995 Freestyle World Cup competitions held here.

With a heart for developing the young wrestler, Mr. Myers had directed a five-month 'Judgment Day' wrestling regimented workout at his home for the past 40 years.

He was a former president of Enterprise Sales and Engineering and the inventor of the Myers Bar, a weight training instrument. He had written five novels and his agent was Estelle Schultz, grandmother of the late World and Olympic wrestling gold medalist Dave Schultz.

Mr. Myers was a native of Chicago and an all-city fullback for Senn High School there.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa M. Myers; a son, Bob Myers, Ringgold, Ga.; two daughters, Alice Myles, South Korea, and Lyn Leslie, Arden, N.C.; a brother, Dr. Albert Myers, Oceanside, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Nolan officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and Saturday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.

Memorial contributions may be made to the UTC Wrestling Department, 615 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37403.

Robert Baker Jr.
Robert 'Robbie' Douglas Baker Jr., who served in the U.S. Navy, died Sunday, May 9, 1999, from injuries he sustained in an automobile accident. He was 22.

Mr. Baker was a member of Bayside Baptist Church and a graduate of Central High School.

Survivors include his parents, Robert D. and Susan Park Baker; his brother, Michael Baker; a sister, Amy Baker; maternal grandparents, Leona C. and J. Franklin Park; paternal grandparents, Harold and Maizie Baker Mintern, all of Chattanooga; and one great-grandmother, Myrtle Sneed, Calhoun, Tenn.

The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road, with the Rev. Robert Stitts officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bayside Baptist Church Youth Center Building Fund.

Richard 'Dick' Jones, 69
Richard Kimball 'Dick' Jones, president and publisher of Kickoff Publishing Co., died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at his home. He was 69.

Mr. Jones, a native of Atlanta, was the son of the late Richard J. and Leila Valentine Jones and the father of the late Eric K. Jones.

He graduated from the University of the South at Sewanee in 1951 and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Mountain City Club and an avid boater.

Survivors include his wife, Judith Edmonston Jones, Chattanooga; a daughter, Vanessa L. Jones, Atlanta; and a sister, Edith V. Jones, New York.

The family will receive friends today from 1 to 3 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Educational Society of Chattanooga, 212 N. Highland Park Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Raymond Stargin Jr.
Raymond Stargin Jr., who retired after 25 years with the Chattanooga Police Department, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, in a local hospital.

Mr. Stargin owned and operated White Castle Bar-B-Que, the Westside Tavern, the Marine Room and the East Third Street Spur gas station.

He was a member of Westside Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Callie Stargin; five children, Raymond Stargin III, Arnetta Scruggs, Randy Stargin, Carolyn Brandon and Michael Bloodsoe, all of Chattanooga; two sisters, Ethel Mae Adams, Colorado, and Geneva Scruggs, Chattanooga; a foster brother, James McDonald, Atlanta; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at noon at Westside Baptist Church with the Rev. Earl Tolbert officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

The body will be at the Trammel Chapel of Hardwick & Sons Funeral Home today and one hour before the service at the church Wednesday.

Pauline Slater
Pauline West Slater, wife of the Rev. Arnold Slater and the first woman to moderate the Southeast Convention of Congregational Christian Churches, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999.

Mrs. Slater was an active participant in her husband's ministry in several pastorates in Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia.

She was the first woman to serve as moderator of the then-six state Southeast Convention of Congregational Christian Churches. She also served two terms on the Kentucky-Tennessee Women's Fellowship while actively participating in the local church ministry.

She was on local boards including the YWCA and was president of Church Women United and the Parent Teacher Association for the city of Chattanooga.

Survivors other than her husband include a son, Arnold Mark Slater, Chattanooga; daughter, Betty Odom Soward, Chattanooga; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church with Dr. John Mingus officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church, 400 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Pauline S. McClure, 74
Pauline S. McClure, retired after 20 years as a bookkeeper for the state of Tennessee, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, at her home. She was 74.

Mrs. McClure, a native of Fort Payne, Ala., was a member of Clifton Hill Baptist Church, where she served as secretary.

She was a member, past president and state officer of the Chattanooga Business and Professional Women's Association.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth McClure; son, James K. McClure, Ringgold, Ga.; daughter, Karen M. Thornhill, Memphis; her mother, Zelma Burkhart, Chattanooga; two brothers, Jack and Harry Seymore, both of Chattanooga; twin sister, Kathleen Cooper, Chattanooga; four grandchildren, Jody, Troy and Angela Thornhill, Nicole Fly; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East, with Dr. Larry Draper and brother Charles Fiorello officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Paul B. Dickson
Paul Bryan Dickson, a Lookout Mountain, Tenn., resident who had held management positions in the textile and soft drink industries, died Thursday, March 4, 1999. He was 61.

Mr. Dickson was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area. He was a graduate of Chattanooga High School and the University of Chattanooga. He was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, T.B. Dickson.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Hines Dickson; his mother, Laura Kate Evans Dickson, Chattanooga; four sisters, his twin, Pauline Dickson Howard, Hixson, Lucy Elizabeth Dickson and Glenda Kay Dickson, both of Ringgold, Ga., and Libby Dickson Summann, Colorado Springs, Colo.; several nieces and nephews, including Ted E. Howard III of Chattanooga and Laura Elizabeth Howard, Hixson.

A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in Forest Hills cemetery with the Rev. David Harr officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to First-Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402, or a favorite charity.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home.

Edna Patton
DUNLAP, Tenn. - Edna Elizabeth Barker Patton died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, in an area hospital. She was 90.

She was the widow of Earl Patton and the mother of the late Jean Knight. She attended the Church of Christ.

Survivors include two daughters, Nancy Odom and Sharon Douglas; two sons, Gary and Anthony Patton, all of Dunlap; one sister, Hallie Flynn, Monteagle, Tenn.; one brother, Hershel Barker, New Jersey; 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. CST at Ewton Funeral Home with the Rev. Brian Kearns officiating.

Burial will be in Sequatchie County Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ora Jane Austin Hixson, 107
DUNLAP, Tenn. - Services for Ora Jane Austin Hixson will be today at 1 p.m. CST at Ewton Funeral Home in Dunlap, with the Rev. Harold Ray and the Rev. Steve Parker officiating.

Burial will be in Welch Chapel cemetery.

Mrs. Hixson died Saturday, March 6, 1999, in a Chattanooga health care facility. She was 107.

Formerly of Dunlap, she was a teacher retired from the Sequatchie County school system and a member of the National Education Association, Dunlap United Methodist Church and the Dorcas Sunday school class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Hixson, and a son, Noel Hixson.

Survivors include a son, Finis Hixson, Chattanooga; daughter, Janice Shough, Springfield, Ohio; two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
