Tennessee, U.S., Delayed Birth Records, 1869-1909
Margaret Levine
Margaret Louise Levine, a 1991 graduate of Girls Preparatory School, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 25.

Miss Levine held a bachelor of arts degree from Tufts University in Boston. She was a member of Mizpah Congregation and the Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Support Group.

Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Howard I. Levine, Chattanooga; two brothers, James H. Levine, Chattanooga, and Matthew J. Levine, Philadelphia; and her grandmother, Mrs. Louise S. Mittenthal, Dallas.

The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Mizpah Congregation.

Burial will be in Mizpah cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Margaret Levine Memorial Fund at Mizpah Congregation or to the Chattanooga Area Brain Injury Association, 1501 Riverside Drive, Suite 340, Chattanooga, TN 37406.

Arrangements are by J. Avery Bryan Funeral Home.

Mable Thomas Shook
JASPER, Tenn. - Mable Thomas Shook, who with her late husband owned and operated the U.S. 41 Cafe here in the 1930s and the Shook Motel on U.S. Highway 41 in Kimball, died Wednesday, Feb. 17, 1999, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Shook and her husband, James Reid Shook, ran the Shook Motel for some 20 years until they sold it in 1971.

She was a longtime resident of Marion County and a native of Summerfield, Tenn. She was a daughter of the late John W. and Katherine Hunt Thomas and attended the Shook School in Tracy City, Tenn.

Mrs. Shook was a lifelong member of the Kimball Church of Christ and a 'Gray Lady' volunteer at Baroness Erlanger Hospital for a number of years.

She was the mother of the late James Newman Shook.

Survivors include her children, Mrs. Joe 'Perky' Brown, Jasper, Mrs. David 'Mary' Turner, Chattanooga, and Betty Shook, Jasper; a brother, Virgil C. Thomas, Kimball; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. CST from the Kimball Church of Christ with ministers Billy Watkins, John Cupp and Virgil Thomas officiating.

Burial will be in Sequatchie Valley Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. CST at Rogers Funeral Home in Jasper.

Lucy D. Johnston
Lucy D. Johnston, a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church and a charter member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, died Thursday, Feb. 11, 1999, at Alexian Health Care Center on Signal Mountain. She was 100.

She was the widow of Thomas Lee Johnston, who was a funeral director with Chattanooga Funeral Home for 30 years before his retirement.

Survivors include two daughters, Marian J. Knox and Virginia J. Sparks, both of Signal Mountain; six grandchildren, David L. Knox III, Chattanooga, Jan K. Irwin, Hillsborough, N.C., Thomas Sparks, South Carolina, Gina Fletcher, Memphis, Terry Lee Knox and Patti Cole, both of Signal Mountain; nine great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, West, with Dr. William Dudley officiating.

Burial will be in Fort Hill cemetery, Cleveland, Tenn.

The family will receive friends today from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church.

Lucille P. Stanley, 84
Lucille Proctor Stanley, who with her late husband, George D. Stanley Sr., had managed several real estate development companies, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at her Chattanooga home. She was 84.

Mrs. Stanley, a native of Chester, S.C., had been a resident of Chattanooga since she came here from Burlington, N.C., in 1940.

She was the oldest surviving charter member of Lookout Mountain Baptist Church and was a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her stepdaughters, Alyce S. Vrolyk and Ann S. Westvig.

Survivors include a son, George D. Stanley Jr., Missoula, Mont.; a daughter, Jeanne Stanley Cole, Ooltewah; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road, with the Revs. Joe Jensen and Ike Keay officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lookout Mountain Baptist Church, 901 Scenic Highway, Lookout Mountain, TN 37350, or to Bethel Bible Village, 3001 Hamill Road, Hixson, TN 37343.

Lucille Kinnamon Elliott
Lucille Kinnamon Elliott, who taught school in the elementary grades for 37 years, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999, in a local health care facility. She was 88.

She was a resident of Signal Mountain and had received a bachelor's degree from Maryville College, a master's degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and a specialist in education degree from the University of Florida.

She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa honorary teachers' sorority and the American Association of University Women during her teaching years, the Kosmos Women's Club of Chattanooga during her retirement years, and Signal Mountain Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Hazel Kidd, Newark, Del., and Dorothy Haddox, Maryville, Tenn.; one niece; two nephews; several great-nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Childress officiating.

A graveside service will be Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Clark's Grove cemetery, Maryville.

The family will receive friends Friday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Kenneth Naylor
Kenneth Allan Naylor, retired as an engineer and head of materials testing for the Tennessee Highway Department, died Sunday, April 25, 1999, at his home. He was 72.

Mr. Naylor was a native of Webster, Pa., and had lived in Chattanooga for more than 50 years. He was a member of St. Stephen's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Chattanooga, where he was captain and quarterback on the football team and was chosen Little All American. He was a member and president of Kappa Sigma fraternity and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Eliza Naylor; two brothers, Clifford and Raymond Naylor; and two sisters, Luetta France and Evelyn George.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Stagmaier Naylor; a son, Allan Naylor, Atlanta; six daughters, Lynda MacGuire, Knoxville, Rebecca Carmichael, Chattanooga, Nancy Meredith, Johnson City, Tenn., Lori DeMunbrun, Glasgow, Ky., Amy Recastle, Chattanooga, and Marti Naylor, Chattanooga; 15 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Catholic Church with the Rev. P.J. McGinnity officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Kelley Massey, 86
Kelley E. Massey, who retired as superintendent of postal services after 34 years with the U.S. Postal Service, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 86.

Mr. Massey had been superintendent of postal services for 16 years before his retirement. During his tenure with the Postal Service he received many awards for performance, including two superior achievement awards for service in public relations.

He had led the United Fund and savings bond drives in several years and was editor of the monthly newsletter for postal employees.

Mr. Massey was a member of Brainerd Church of Christ, where he served as an elder for more than 30 years. He also served on the board of directors of the Chattanooga Federal Employees Credit Union.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude C. Massey; a daughter, Jeanne Davis, Houston; son, Marion K. Massey, Dallas; two stepdaughters, Kay Sneed Sullivan, Ider, Ala., and Carol Sneed Meragher, Athens, Ala.; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Brainerd Church of Christ with ministers Gary Bradley and Ronnie Missildine officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 6925 Shallowford Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Joyce Daugherty
Joyce Lee Daugherty, president of Daugherty Insurance Co., died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 64.

Mrs. Daugherty, a resident of Harrison, was a lifelong resident of this area and had been active in the insurance industry for 45 years.

She was a member of the Insurance Agents Association of Chattanooga and professional organizations in Georgia and Tennessee. She had been a member of Grace Episcopal Church for 45 years and was involved in many charitable organizations, including the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include her husband, Tom A. Daugherty Jr.; two sons, Mike T. Daugherty, Fort Oglethorpe, and Tye Daugherty, Harrison; a daughter, Teresa D. Marquez, Chattanooga; two brothers, Kenneth Craig, Los Angeles, and Chester Craig, Atlanta; two sisters, Edna Wolfe, Lake Havasu, Calif., and Mildred Young, Chattanooga; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. George Glazier and the Rev. Jim Wilbanks officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8 p.m. and one hour before the service Friday at the church.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 850 Fortwood St., Chattanooga, TN 37403; the Arthritis Foundation, 757 Broad St., Chattanooga, TN 37402; or Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37411.
