Inez Clements Clark, 88
Inez Mallicoat Clements Clark of Rossville died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, in a local health care facility. She was 88.

A native and longtime resident of Walker County, Ga., she was a member of Cloud Springs Baptist Church and its Steadfast Sunday School Class.

She was retired from the Walker County School System after 38 years of service.

She was a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Judson C. Clements.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Clark; two sisters, Evelyn Dawson, Chickamauga, and Anne Cornwell, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; one brother, Frank Mallicoat, Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway, with Dr. Jerry Brown and the Rev. Randy Franks officiating.

Burial will be in Chickamauga cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ina T. Hume
Ina T. Hume, a resident of Chattanooga since 1940, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Hume had lived in Battery Place, where she moved in 1946 shortly after coming to this city. Her home was among those placed on the historic register.

She and her late husband, Leland Trabue Hume, the former general manager of Southern Bell Telephone, earlier had lived in Nashville and Jackson, Tenn.

Mrs. Hume was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

Her only child is Mrs. Gordon (Leland) Davenport, who has been active in civic affairs here.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Hume is survived by three grandchildren, Gordon Lee Davenport Jr., Hume Davenport and Mary Leland Davenport; and two great-grandchildren, Gordon Lee Davenport III and Emma Trabue Davenport.

The funeral will be today at 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church.

A private burial will follow in Mount Olivet cemetery in Nashville.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home.

Howard Sanland
Howard L. Sanland, who retired from McKee Baking as a route supervisor, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, in a local hospital.

Mr. Sanland, a resident of Rossville, had lived all his life in the Chattanooga and North Georgia area. He was a former employee of Peerless Woolen Mills and had worked for Penns Bakery.

Mr. Sanland was a member of Rossville Masonic Lodge 397 F&AM; and was on the director's staff at the Alhambra Temple. He was a member of the Grand Commandry Knights Templar of Georgia and was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Vickie Knight, and a grandson, Donald T. Sanland Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie S. Sanland; son, Donald T. Sanland, Atlanta; two daughters, Nancy Vaughn, Tiftonia, and Cindy Stephens, Ringgold, Ga.; two sisters, Willie Bell Pruitt and Helen Massey, both of Rossville; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Stephens officiating.

Burial will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park, with Rossville Masonic Lodge 397 conducting graveside rites.

The family will receive friends today after 3 p.m. and Friday after noon at the funeral home.

Helen M. Smith
Helen M. Smith, who worked as a bookkeeper with the Tennessee Valley Authority for 20 years and had been a secretary for former Sen. Estes Kefauver here, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at her Red Bank home. She was 92.

Miss Smith, a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, also worked for the state of Tennessee for 13 years and for the U.S. Postal Service.

She was a former member of Red Bank United Methodist Church and a member of White Oak United Methodist Church and its Wesley Johnson Sunday School class.

Survivors include a brother, Robert L. Smith, Red Bank; four sisters, Minnie Johnson, Etta Davis and Bessie Irvin, all of Red Bank, and Martha Sims, Ooltewah; five nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with Dr. Richard Humphrey officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to White Oak United Methodist Church, 2232 Lyndon Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37415.

Chester C. 'Chick' Hawkins
Chester C. 'Chick' Hawkins, who had worked at several area golf courses, died Thursday, May 20, 1999, at his East Ridge home. He was 91.

The annual Chick Hawkins Golf Tournament at Moccasin Bend, where he worked for several years, is held in his honor.

Mr. Hawkins was a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, a World War II veteran and the recipient of a Purple Heart.

Survivors include a niece, June Johnson; a great-nephew, Steven Sewell; and a great-niece, Nathausha Sewell, all of East Ridge.

A graveside service will be today at 11:30 a.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery with the Rev. Bettye Oliver officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 10 to 11 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.

Claude Isaac Finley
Claude Isaac Finley, retired after 30 years as minister of music at Tucker Baptist Church, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at the home of a sister. He was 71.

Mr. Finley was educated in Chattanooga public schools and was instructed in piano, including studies at the Cadek Conservatory of Music at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

He was a member of Second Missionary Baptist Church and a veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Finley was responsible for Tucker Baptist Church's becoming the first African-American church in the community to have a minister of music and the first to have a mass choir.

The mass choir at Tucker Baptist recorded many songs arranged by Mr. Finley on its first album. James Sledge, a soloist in the mass choir, also recorded a successful album accompanied by and under the leadership of Mr. Finley. Other Tucker Baptist mass choir accomplishments include performances at the opening of the Roland Hayes Concert Hall at UTC, singing with renowned singer Sandi Patti at the UTC Arena with more than 10,000 people in attendance and singing at a welcome home rally for Vice President Al Gore.

Before his commitment to Tucker Baptist, Mr. Finley played for Mount Zion Methodist Church; First Baptist Church in Chickamauga, Ga.; St. Mary Episcopal Church; St. Elmo Baptist Church; and Emanuel Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Mattie B. Cooper and Rebecca F. Harris, both of Chattanooga; and three brothers, William Finley, Chattanooga, and Clarence and Amos Finley Jr., both of California.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday at noon at Second Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Paul McDaniel and the Rev. Grant Harris Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Avondale Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association or the Arthritis Foundation.

Cora Jane M. McAllester
Cora Jane MacMillan McAllester, a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church and the widow of Spears McAllester, died Monday, Feb. 22, 1999, at a local hospital.

Mrs. McAllester, a resident of Signal Mountain, was a member of the Junior League of Chattanooga and served on many civic committees.

Survivors include a daughter, Anne Elizabeth McAllester, Atlanta; a son, Spears Louis McAllester, Chattanooga; several nephews and a niece.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with Dr. Albert J. Bowles Jr. officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home.

David Brown Smith, 71
David Brown Smith, who owned H&C; Men's Wear in Rossville, Ga., for more than 30 years, died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in a local health care facility. He was 71.

Mr. Smith had been president of Janco Vending Service for 16 years and was president of the Rossville Merchants Association.

He was a Chattanooga native and the son of the late John and Bertha Smith. He was a graduate of the University of Chattanooga, where he was a member of the Lambdi Chi Alpha fraternity. He served in the Navy during the Korean conflict.

Mr. Smith was a former member of Northside Presbyterian Church. At the time of his death he was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and was an usher and greeter. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Rossville and had been a volunteer with CONTACT for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Jo Henderson Smith; daughter, Joy Smith Stokes, Knoxville; son, Robert O'Kelley, Ringgold, Ga.; a sister, Lucille Williams, Ringgold; two grandchildren, Virginia and Marshall Stokes, both of Knoxville.

The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with Dr. Al Bowles and Dr. Nell Mohney officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to First-Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402, or to CONTACT of Chattanooga, 6221 Vance Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421.
