Elma Jones Terry
Elma Jones Terry, who taught in Chattanooga schools for 37 years, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 93.

Mrs. Terry was a graduate of Gore High School and Georgia State College. She was a member of East Lake United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Terry.

Survivors include a son, Sam Jones Terry, Austell, Ga.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Ed Snodgrass and the Rev. Charles Ellis officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to East Lake United Methodist Church, 2903 E. 37th St., Chattanooga, TN 37407.

Elsie Kinzalow
Elsie L. Turner Kinzalow, retired from Newell Hospital, died Tuesday, May 11, 1999, at her home. She was 94.

Mrs. Kinzalow, a lifelong resident of Chattanooga, was a former member of Eastdale Baptist Church and a member of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William 'Bill' Kinzalow; two daughters, Charlotte Ann Kinzalow and Helen Louse Chinn; her brothers, Gene, Bryant, Cecil and James 'Bookie' Turner; and two sisters, Mary Alma Turner and Frances Turner.

Survivors include three sons, William A. Kinzalow Jr., Woodstock, Ga., Cecil 'Sonny' Kinzalow, Soddy-Daisy, and Andrew Kinzalow, Chattanooga; three daughters, Barbara Hutton and Alma Pillars, both of Chattanooga, and Eva Goza, Lookout Mountain, Ga.; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Friday at noon at the Dodds Avenue Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Mason and the Rev. Ray Walker officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 2 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Fannie T. Maddox, 94
CALHOUN, Tenn. - Fannie Taylor Maddox, who taught in the McMinn County school system for 43 years, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 94.

After her retirement she was a substitute teacher for 13 years.

Mrs. Maddox was the oldest member of Calhoun United Methodist Church. She was an inductee in the first Calhoun High School Alumni Hall of Fame and had a life membership in the United Methodist Women and the Parent Teachers Association.

She was a member of the Calhoun Lioness Club and an honorary member of Future Farmers of America.

Mrs. Maddox was the daughter of the late Dr. Henry F. and Lily Harrison Taylor and the widow of John R. Maddox Sr.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Anne Maddox Myers, Calhoun; son, Dr. John Maddox Jr., Knoxville; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Calhoun United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Burlingham and the Rev. Paul Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Calhoun cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church.

Felmont Farrell Eaves, 87
ATHENS - Felmont Farrell Eaves Sr., a director of Athens Federal Savings & Loan and of First National Bank of Athens, died Monday, May 3, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 87.

Mr. Eaves served as director of First National Bank of Athens for 21 years. He was on the board of directors for the National Association of Hosiery Manufacturers and for the Wayne Gossard Corp., Dycho Corp., Whitecliff Corp., Cook Paper Box Co. and Signal Knitting Mills.

He was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church and had served as president of Athens Hosiery Mills from 1930-1969.

He was a member of Springbrook Golf and Country Club and had served on the President's Council of Tennessee Wesleyan College.

Survivors include two sons, Felmont Farrell Eaves Jr., Signal Mountain, Tenn., and Dr. George Newton Eaves, Savannah, Ga.; a brother, Willard Howard Eaves, Nashville; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Cedar Grove cemetery with John Eaves, James R. Tice and layleader J. Neal Ensminger officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friendly Fellows Fund, c/o The Daily Post Athenian, P.O. Box 340, Athens, TN 37371-0340.

Arrangements are by Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home, Athens.

Gene Chewning
Gene Chewning, who retired as a pharmaceutical representative for Abbott Laboratories, died Monday, April 5, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 63.

Mr. Chewning covered the southeastern region of the United States for Abbott Laboratories for 22 years. He was a resident of East Brainerd.

He was a native of Middle Fork, W.Va., and had lived in the Chattanooga area for more than 29 years. He was a graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio and a former employee of the Texaco Corp.

Mr. Chewning was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Christ United Methodist Church, where he served on the usher committee and was in the Lessons of Life Sunday school class.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Julia B. Murphy Chewning.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Garber Chewning; a daughter, Cara Chewning, Chattanooga; son, Scott Chewning, Knoxville; five brothers, Curtis Chewning, Canton, Ohio, Ronald Chewning, Orlando, Fla., Charles Chewning, Vanderbilt, Mich., Carl Chewning, Hagerstown, Md., and Gerald Chewning, Dunnellon, Fla.; two sisters, Bonita June Arbogast, Urbana, Ill., and Neva Riegel, Las Cruces, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Christ United Methodist Church Building Fund, 8645 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, TN 37421, or to Family and Children's Services, 300 E. Eighth St., Chattanooga, TN 37403.

Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

George S. Cutchin
George Stanfill Cutchin, who taught at Baylor School for 22 years, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 85.

Mr. Cutchin was retired from a teaching position at Ringgold High School.

He was a graduate of Murray State University and received a master's degree from Peabody College. He did graduate work at the University of Kentucky.

He was a veteran of World War II and a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hudson Cutchin, one niece and a nephew.

A memorial service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at First-Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Harr officiating.

The family will receive friends after the service at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to First-Centenary United Methodist Church or to a church of your choice.

Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Geraldine Smith
Geraldine E. Smith died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, in a local health care center. She was 90.

A native of Long Island, Ala., Mrs. Smith had lived in Chattanooga for most of her life and was a member of Second Baptist Church.

She and her late husband, Marvin C. Smith, were co-owners and operators of Smith Funeral Home in Chattanooga, Cleveland, and Dalton for many years. She also owned and operated the Scenic Motel and City View Motel for many years.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Jefferson Smith.

Survivors include two sons, Harley Ray Smith, McMinnville, Tenn., and Marvin C. Smith Jr., Chattanooga; one daughter, Leveda Walker, Wildwood, Ga.; one sister, Sarah Rollins, Florence, Ky.; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road, with the Rev. Ken McElhaney officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International or the Lupus Foundation.

Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Gretchen Suggs, 92
Gretchen Tanner Suggs, a longtime nurse at T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital here, died Monday, March 29, 1999, at her Chattanooga home. She was 92.

Mrs. Suggs was born in Harrison County, Mo., where she received her early education. She graduated from Washington University School of Nursing in St. Louis in 1927. Her first position was overseeing the Pediatric Department at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville.

After several years at Vanderbilt, she came to Chattanooga to help establish T.C. Thompson Children's Hospital. She remained there until Erlanger took charge of the hospital.

Mrs. Suggs was an active member of First Baptist Church of Chattanooga and its Esther Bible Class.

She was preceded in death by her husband, J.B. Suggs; two stepsons, J.W. and Ralph Suggs; a sister, Blanche Clapham; and a brother, Frank R. Tanner.

Survivors include a stepdaughter, Reba Ann Williams; stepson, John Alan Suggs, both of Chattanooga; a brother, Don Tanner, Missouri; two sisters, Grace Pergande, Sheridan, Wyo., and Phyllis Tanner, Sacramento, Calif.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road, with Dr. Gary Carver officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Kitchen, 727 E. 11th St., Chattanooga, TN 37403.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Donald Charles Grob, 80
Donald Charles 'Don' Grob Sr., retired assistant safety director for the Electric Power Board of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999, at his home here. He was 80.

Mr. Grob, a native of Lorain, Ohio, was educated at Cleveland State College. He was a Navy veteran of the South Pacific, having served aboard the USS Hancock, and had been a Chattanooga area resident for more than 45 years.

He was a 25-year member of the American Society of Safety Engineers and served the Chattanooga chapter as president. He was an American Red Cross first aid instructor and a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church for more than 45 years.

Mr. Grob was past president and director of the Tennessee State Credit Unions, president and director of the Chattanooga chapter of Credit Unions 1977 and 1978, and president of director of the League Central Credit Union. He served two terms as president of the local chapter of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Chattanooga Half Century Club.

He was a longtime member of the Chickamauga Investment Club, a 50-year member of Red Bank Masonic Lodge 717 F&AM;, and a member of the Alhambra Shrine and the Scottish Rite. An avid fisherman, in 1968 he caught the largest blue marlin in more than 100 years off the coast of Destin, Fla.

Mr. Grob organized many charter trips to Hawaii from Chattanooga.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George M. Grob, and two brothers, George Maynard Grob and Harvey Edward Grob.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Vickey Swaim Grob; a son, Donald C. Grob Jr.; and a daughter, Diane Grob Schmidt.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North, with the Rev. Mike Hubble and the Rev. Harold Buck officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Gwen Hurley Pierce, 70
ATHENS, Tenn. - Gwen Hurley Pierce, a former Bible teacher in the McMinn County school system, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1999, in an area nursing home. She was 70.

Mrs. Pierce was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, where she was active as a Sunday school teacher and was involved in Women on Mission.

She was a garden club member and a foreign student liaison at Tennessee Wesleyan College. She was active in the T.W.C. International Student Organization and Campus Life.

Survivors include her husband, Garland E. 'Jack' Pierce; two sons, Gary M. Pierce, Atlanta, and Glenn E. Pierce, Sevierville, Tenn.; a brother, David A. Hurley Jr., Dayton, Ohio; four grandchildren and one great-grandson.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home, Athens, with Dr. Carlos R. Peterson and the Rev. Joe Hunt officiating.

Burial will be in McMinn Memory Gardens.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
