Tennessee, U.S., Delayed Birth Records, 1869-1909
Billy Skiles
Billy Skiles, a former employee of the Chattanooga Publishing Co. and a resident of Rossville, Ga., died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 62.

Mr. Skiles was a longtime North Georgia resident and a member of the Gospel Light Assembly Church in Rossville.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Davis Skiles, Rossville; three sons, Billy J. Skiles, Red Bank, Gary Wayne Skiles, Rossville, and David Michael Skiles, Chattanooga; a daughter, Jennifer Lynn Raines, Rossville; a brother, Charles Ira Skiles, Soddy-Daisy; two sisters, Mildred Masingil, Hixson, and Louise Russell, Evensville, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Grider officiating.

Burial will be in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends all day today and Thursday morning before the service at the funeral home.

Arthur R. Plettner, 94
Dr. Arthur R. Plettner, Juilliard professor of music at the University of Tennessee for 36 years, died Saturday, Feb. 13, 1999, in a local health care facility. He was 94.

Dr. Plettner, a native of New York City, got his early musical education at the Bavarian State Conservatory in Wuerzberg and the Juilliard Graduate School of Music in New York. He received both his bachelor of music and doctor of music degrees from the University of Toronto.

An accomplished flutist and pianist, he worked with the German Theatre and the Ziegfeld shows before his move to Chattanooga in 1937.

He was the second conductor of the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra for 12 seasons, beginning in 1937. As a composer, he had several orchestral, organ and choral compositions to his credit.

Dr. Plettner was married to the late Isa McIllwraith Plettner.

Survivors include four nieces, Diane Plettner, Needles, Calif., Linda Plettner, Anchorage, Alaska, Isa Rex, New York City, and Ethel McIllwraith, Beaverton, Ore.; and a nephew, Howard McIllwraith, Milpitas, Calif.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Private burial will be in Paterson, N.J.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Arrangements are by the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Archie Marion Day Jr., 79
Archie Marion 'Arch' Day Jr., retired after serving as director and sales manager at Mills & Lupton Supply Co. for many years, died Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1999, at the family home. He was 79.

Mr. Day, a veteran of World War II, served in the Army in Italy. He was a graduate of Baylor School and the University of Chattanooga, and had been a member of Pilgrim Congregational Church for more than 50 years.

He was past president of the Chattanooga Half Century Club, past exalted ruler of Chattanooga Elks Club 91, past potentate of the Alhambra Shrine and a member of Chattanooga Temple Masonic Lodge F&AM;, Chattanooga Commandra 32 and the York Rite Bodies. He was a 33rd-degree Scottish Rite Mason, past director of the Jestors and a member of the Red Cross of Constantine Solvergn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Day Sr., and a sister, Ruth Day Tucker.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Kennedy Day; a son, Bill Doremus, Ridgecrest, Calif; a nephew, Lex Tucker, Tucson, Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. John W. Mingus officiating.

Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery, with a Masonic service conducted by Chattanooga Temple Masonic Lodge.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alhambra Shrine Crippled Children's Fund, 1000 Alhambra Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Ann Cason Allen
Ann Cason Allen of Lookout Mountain, Ga., died Wednesday, May 12, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 77.

She was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church where she had been active in the Women in the Church, having served as that group's president. She had also been a volunteer in the 'Changed Lives ' ministry.

A graduate of Girls Preparatory School, she had served as alumnae president.

Survivors include her husband, Arthur M. Allen; daughter, Mary Allen Baird, Arlington, Va.; and three grandsons.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel at First Presbyterian Church with Lea Clower officiating. The family will receive friends in the church Connector one hour prior to the service.

Burial will be in Forest Hills cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to 'Changed Lives,' Box 100, Chattanooga, TN 37401, or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home.

Allen Woody
Allen Woody, a University of Tennessee at Chattanooga student and lifelong local resident, died Thursday, March 11, 1999, at his home. He was 18.

Mr. Woody was a 1998 graduate of Soddy-Daisy High School and was majoring in physical therapy at UTC. He was a supporter of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity, a member of the Ultimate Desires Truck Club and a Baptist.

Survivors include his parents, David and Redena Woody; a sister, Angela Hicks, Chattanooga; grandparents, Herb and Sue Woody, Red Bank, and Betty and Gordon Massey Jr., Trenton, Ga.; his great-grandmother, Katie Massey, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; and a nephew.

The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Hugh B. Jones Jr. officiating.

A graveside service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.

The family will receive friends today after 11 a.m. and Sunday after 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Allan Budd Alexander, 77
Allan Budd Alexander, a professional photographer for more than 50 years, died Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at his home. He was 77.

Mr. Alexander was a longtime employee of Camera and Craft and retired from the camera department of JCPenney at Northgate Mall as buyer-manager.

He graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville, N.C., attended Tennessee Wesleyan College and graduated from Leica Photography School in New York City and Cline Photography School in Chattanooga.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 95. He was active in the Civitan Club and was founder of the International Civitan Club in Chattanooga.

His parents were the late Allen W. and Mary Alexander.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Hutcheson Alexander; two daughters, Karen Alexander, Lookout Mountain, and Barbara Alexander, Orange Park, Fla.; a son, Robert R. Hixson, Orange Park; two sisters, Jean Alexander and Marjorie Beacom, both of California; five grandchildren, Rhonda, Kandi, Christy, Anita and Anthony; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Hubble officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

A.B. 'Spike' Deitch
A.B. 'Spike' Deitch, an independent insurance agent for 60 years before his retirement, died Friday, May 14, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 90.

Mr. Deitch, a native of Chattanooga, was the son of the late Moses and Rose Lebovitz Deitch. He was a member of Mizpah Congregation and graduated from Chattanooga High School in 1927.

He was an avid golfer and a former member of Valleybrook Golf & Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ida 'Skeedie' Deitch; a son, Gilbert Deitch, Atlanta; two daughters, Marsha Litvin, Brookline, Mass., and Carole Shapiro, Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Edith Segal, Houston; and several grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at B'Nai Zion cemetery with Rabbi Josef Davidson officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation, 1 Siskin Plaza, Chattanooga, TN 37403, or a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by J. Avery Bryan Funeral Home.

Frank Baisden
Frank Mathis Baisden died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at a local nursing home. He was 94.

Arrangements will be announced by Lane Funeral Home, Coulter Chapel.

Alex Cothran
Alex Cothran died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998.

He was formerly employed by Cherokee Warehouse.

Arrangements will be announced by Taylor Funeral Home.

Dorothy Foshee
Dorothy K. Foshee of East Brainerd died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at a local health care facility. She was 77.

She was a Friendship Primitive Baptist Church member and retired from the East Brainerd Piggly Wiggly market.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Hermon Foshee.

Survivors include three sisters, Bill Murphy, Rosanna Slack, both of Chattanooga, and Hattie Elliott, McDonald, Tenn.

Graveside services will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Anderson cemetery with elders Ralph Howell and Wayne Peters officiating.

The family will receive friends today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to Southeast Tennessee Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 6925 Shallowford Road, Suite 305, Chattanooga, TN 37421.

Carrie Hearell
Carrie T. Hearell died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, at a local hospital. She was 88.

She was a St. Andrews United Methodist Church member.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Hearell.

Survivors include a daughter, Dorothy Falls, Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Connie Whitted, Cleveland, Tenn., Billy and Charles Falls, both of Chattanooga; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home, Highway 58 Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Mason officiating.

Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillie Hicks
Lillie F. Hicks of Rossville died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in a local health care facility. She was 87.

She was a native of McMinnville, Tenn., but had been a North Georgia resident since 1935.

Mrs. Hicks attended the Church of Christ and was the widow of James T. Hicks.

Survivors include her son, Charles Hicks, Rossville; daughter, Billie Phillips, Rossville; three grandsons and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway with minister Jack James officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.

Visitation was to be today from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Robert Howard
Robert Jackson Howard died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998, at the family home. He was 73.

He was a Baptist.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Monnie Frisbie Howard.

Survivors include three nephews and two nieces.

Graveside services were today at 2:30 p.m. at Greenwood cemetery with the Rev. Donald Givens officiating.

Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, East Chapel.
