Florence Preiss
SPRING CITY - Florence Varn Preiss died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a retirement home in Spring City. She was 79.

She was a graduate of Winthrope College in Rock Hill, S.C., and taught school in the South Carolina and Michigan departments of education.

She was active in the American Association of Retired Persons and was coordinator of the annual AARP Spring City Craft Fair. She was a member and former president of the Spring City Women's Club, public affairs committee chairwoman, and led activities such as voter registration.

She was a long-standing member of the Rhea Medical Center's board of directors.

Survivors include a brother, Jasper Varn Jr., Bamberg, S.C.; one niece and a nephew.

A memorial service will be today at 7 p.m. at Vaughn Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Hillian officiating.

Burial will be in Shady Rest 'McMillan' cemetery in Ehrhardt, S.C.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

John Roberts
KNOXVILLE - John Larry Roberts, formerly of Soddy-Daisy, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in Gatlinburg, Tenn. He was 54.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Varner cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mae Simpson
ATHENS - Mae Trotter Simpson died Friday, May 21, 1999, in a health care center in Athens. She was 89.

She and her late husband, Kay Simpson, owned and operated Athens Furniture Exchange in downtown Athens for 25 years until his death in 1984.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens.

Survivors include a brother, Dennis Trotter, Clinton, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be today at 8 p.m. at Jerry Smith Funeral Home with the Rev. Todd Davis officiating.

Burial will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in McMinn Memory Gardens.

Visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Scott Huling
HAWAII - Scott Ted Huling of Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, died there Sunday, May 9, 1999. He was 36.

Services will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. David Webster officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Lillian Nygren
SPRING, Texas - Lillian Beaver Nygren died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in a nursing home in Spring. She was 93.

A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. in McMinn Memory Gardens with lay leader J. Neal Ensminger and others officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Keith Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1, Athens, TN 37371-0001.

Arrangements are by Jerry Smith Funeral Home, Athens, Tenn.

Graden Edwards
Graden Elmer Edwards died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 93.

Mr. Edwards had lived in the Chattanooga area most of his life. He was a retired truck driver from Central Motor Express and had been a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Mae Sullivan Edwards.

Survivors include two sons, Richard W. and William J. Edwards, both of Chattanooga; daughter, Carolyn Warren, Red Bank; brother, John Estel Edwards, Chattanooga; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at the Dodds Avenue Chapel of Turner Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Miranda Ford
Miranda Anderson Ford of Soddy-Daisy died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, from injuries she sustained in an automobile accident. She was 16.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Aaron Simmons and the Rev. Cecil Hawkins officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton County Memorial Park.

Audrey Gadd
Audrey Lee Gadd of Hixson died Friday, May 21, 1999, in a local health care facility. She was 79.

Mrs. Gadd was a lifelong resident of the Hixson area, was retired from the state of Tennessee and was a Methodist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter E. Gadd, and two brothers, Robert and Marvin Gibson.

Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Gann, Hixson; sister, Eunice Lee, East Ridge; two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Services will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Clyde Gordy
Clyde Gordy died Friday, May 21, 1999, in a Nashville health care facility. He was 69.

Arrangements will be announced by Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway.

John Goza
John W. Goza of Harrison died Friday, May 21, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 62.

Arrangements will be announced by Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Chester Harden Jr. Chester Harden Jr. died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 68.

Arrangements will be announced by Taylor Funeral Home.

Jeanne Hicks
Jeanne E. Hicks died Thursday, May 20, 1999, in a local health care facility. She was 79.

She was a native and longtime resident of the Chattanooga area, having lived in Gainesville, Fla., for a short time before returning here.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church of Woodmore and was retired from Mass Brothers in Gainesville.

Survivors include a son, Max Hicks Jr., Gainesville; daughter, Betty Floyd, East Ridge; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be today at 1 p.m. in Greenwood cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth McElhaney officiating.

Visitation will be today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home.

Harold Humphrey Sr.
Harold H. Humphrey Sr. died Sunday, May 15, 1999, at his home. He was 55.

Services will be today at noon at Taylor Funeral Home with the Rev. William C. Ryan officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East.

Charles Morris
Charles Mayo 'Bud' Morris died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, in Demorest, Ga.

Formerly of Chattanooga, he was a Methodist and a member of the Dunlap masonic lodge and the Signal Mountain Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include his wife, Paulyne D. Morris; three sons, Charles M. Morris Jr., Savannah, Ga., Kary Lynn Morris, Columbus, Miss., and Phillip Carmack Morris, Cornelia, Ga.; a sister, Grace Emmons, San Carlos, Calif.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be today at 11 a.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home with the Rev. Harold Buck officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Visitation will be today after 9:30 a.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Bob Myers Robert
D. 'Bob' Myers, a driving force in amateur wrestling in Chattanooga, across the South and the nation died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, at his Hixson home. He was 74.

A funeral mass will be said today at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with the Rev. Mike Nolan officiating.

Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 3 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.

Pauline Slater
Pauline West Slater, wife of the Rev. Arnold Slater and the first woman to moderate the Southeast Convention of Congregational Christian Churches, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church with Dr. John Mingus officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.

Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pilgrim Congregational Church, 400 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37404.

Freddy Bibbs
Freddy Bibbs died Tuesday, May 18, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 45.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Bibbs.

Survivors include a daughter, Camilla Bibbs-Lee, Chattanooga; two sons, Marcel L. Bibbs, Knoxville, and Nicholas Bibbs, Chattanooga; mother, Bennie Lee Bibbs, Chattanooga; brother, Eugene Terrell Bibbs, El Paso, Texas; sister, Barbara Jean Bibbs, Chattanooga; grandmother, Lucy Henry, Stevenson, Ala.; four grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home with the Rev. Horace Scruggs officiating.

Burial will be in Cross Country cemetery in Stevenson, Ala.

The body will be at the funeral home after noon today until the service.
