Thomas Knowles
Thomas Knowles Sr. died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at a local hospital.

Services will be today at noon at the Avondale Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home with pastor Kevin L. Adams Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Elbert McGregor Elbert McGregor died Friday, April 9, 1999, at his home. He was 83.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

James Milburn
James Lewis Milburn died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 89.

Mr. Milburn was a retired principal from Hixson High School and a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn L. McManus.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie McCann Milburn; two grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters.

Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East, with the Rev. Brent Hall officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Samuel Moorer
Samuel Moorer Sr. of Chattanooga died Saturday, April 10, 1999, in a Sewanee, Tenn., hospital.

Arrangements will be announced by Taylor Funeral Home.

Ralph Nance
Ralph Alton Nance died Wednesday, April 14, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 84.

The Chattanooga native was retired from TVA after 38 years of service, a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church and IBEW Local 721.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia Gayle Nance, and a son, Robert Alton Nance.

Survivors include his wife, Esda Smith Nance; a son, Donald Nance, East Brainerd; daughter, Carol Nance Krider, Gainesville, Ga.; sister, Rosa Lea Kyker, Philadelphia; and seven grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga Memorial Park with the Rev. Harold Buck officiating.

Visitation will be Friday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Coulter Chapel of Lane Funeral Home.

Ernestine Noel
Ernestine S. Noel died Monday, April 12, 1999, at her home.

Arrangements will be announced by the Trammel Chapel of Hardwick & Sons Funeral Home.

Walter Turner
Walter Turner died Monday, April 12, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 12.

Arrangements will be announced by Taylor Funeral Home.

Obie Whitaker
Obie Whitaker died Saturday, April 10, 1999, in a local health care facility.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Mattie Whitlow
Mattie Whitlow died Monday, April 12, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 85.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Fern Boston
Fern Emma Vanburger Boston of Soddy-Daisy, formerly of Lake Monroe, Fla., died Monday, April 12, 1999, at her home. She was 64.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Boston Sr., and a granddaughter, Kimberly A. Morton.

Survivors include five daughters, Emma Fern White, Deland, Fla., Ruthie M. Burk, Lake Monroe, Mary Hite, Blackshear, Ga., and Judy B. Young and Jennie L. Morton, both of Soddy-Daisy; two sons, George W. Boston Jr., Wahunta, Ga., and Don R. Burton, Rentz, Ga.; five sisters, Burnice Donahue, Ithaca, N.Y., Marion E. Olsen, Spencer N.Y., Betty J. DeChellis, Ithaca, Helen E. Mobley, Obrien, Fla., and Carol L. Rollins, Cross Hills, S.C.; two brothers, Frank C. Vanburger, Oswego, N.Y., and Edward J. Vanburger, Titusville, Fla.; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be today at 10 a.m. at Williamson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Clay Moreland officiating.

A graveside service will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at Beulah cemetery in Winter Garden, Fla.

Ruth Crowe
Ruth Crowe died Monday, April 12, 1999, in a local nursing home. She was 77.

Mrs. Crowe was a native of Florence, Ala., and had lived in Florida before moving to Chattanooga. She attended Lookout Valley Church of the Nazarene and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, St. Elmo Chapter 773.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Conrad Crowe.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Crone, Hot Springs, Ark.; a stepson, Mickey Crowe, Decatur, Tenn.; brother, Tommy Lee Harris, Huntsville, Ala.; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with pastor Don Hawkins officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from noon until 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Sarah Doss
Sarah Manning Doss died Monday, April 12, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 89.

Mrs. Doss, a lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, was retired from Memorial Hospital and was a member of Silver Crest Baptist Church.

She was widowed by both Chester A. Manning and Fred Doss.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara Watkins, Hixson, and Martha Jo Manning, East Ridge; two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at W.L. Wilson & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Martin officiating.

Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends all day today at the funeral home.

Lucille Dossett
Lucille J. Dossett died Friday, April 9, 1999, at a local health care facility. She was 92.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Flora Foster
Flora Foster died Sunday, April 11, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 64.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

Lee Goodloe
Lee Goodloe died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, in a local health care facility. He was 90.

Arrangements will be announced by Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home.

James Harris
James Waller Harris died Tuesday, April 13, 1999. He was 87.

Mr. Harris was retired from Southern Railroad as a freight claims adjuster. He was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church, a Mason and a member of the Railroad Retirees.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Rita Fay McGuffey Harris.

Survivors include a daughter, Rita Harris Hames, Chattanooga; one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be private and there will be no visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 850 Fort Wood Place, Chattanooga, TN 37403.

Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home, North.

Earl Hines
Earl Hines died Tuesday, April 13, 1999, in a Jasper, Tenn., nursing home.

Arrangements will be announced by Taylor Funeral Home.

Jack Hopkins
Jack Gordon Hopkins died Monday, April 12, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 83.

Mr. Hopkins had been a longtime resident of Waco, Texas, before moving to Chattanooga two months ago. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy and a retired field director for the American Red Cross.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Violet Eckland Hopkins.

Survivors include a son, Roger Hopkins, Chattanooga; brother, Donald Hopkins, Bloomington, Ill.; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Waco (Texas) Memorial Park.

There will be no local visitation.

Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.

Betty Jenkins
Betty W. Jenkins of Hixson died Monday, April 12, 1999, in Silver Springs, Fla.

A memorial service will be announced by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.

Thomas Knowles
Thomas Knowles Sr. died Saturday, April 10, 1999, at a local hospital.

He was a veteran of the Korean War and was employed by B.H. Yearby Construction Co.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxie Lee Knowles.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Knowles Jr.; daughter, June Knowles; four sisters, Georgia M. Cal, Oceanside, Calif., Sarah Jones, Toledo, Ohio, Patricia Tumblin and Juanita Howard, both of Chattanooga; and two grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at noon at the Avondale Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home with pastor Kevin L. Adams Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in Chattanooga National cemetery.

Oliver Mack
Former Chattanoogan Oliver Mack, retired SSGT from the U.S. Air Force, died Tuesday, April 6, 1999, in Sierra Vista, Ariz.

A graveside service will be today at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga National cemetery.

Arrangements are by Crombie-Pinkard Funeral Service.

Clella G. 'Pat' Moore of Tiftonia died Sunday, April 11, 1999, in a South Pittsburg hospital. She was 78.

Services will be today at 1 p.m. at the Dodds Avenue Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. Cliff Nelson officiating.

Burial will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, West.

The family will receive friends today from 10 a.m. until the service at the funeral home.
