Douglas Helms
Douglas H. Helms died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in a local nursing home. He was 91.
The longtime Chattanooga area resident was a member of Hickory Valley Christian Church and was a retired self-employed salesman.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Acuff Helms; son, Robert D. Helms; sister, Addie Crear, all of Chattanooga; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with minister Dale Lovelady officiating.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home, East.
Winfred McClellan
Winfred McClellan died Sunday, March 21, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 90.
He was a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, where he served on the senior usher board.
Survivors include a daughter, Thelma McClellan; two brothers, Raymond and Leon McClellan, both of Chattanooga; one grandchild, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at noon at St. Paul A.M.E. Church with the Rev. Lewis Williams officiating.
Burial will be in Highland cemetery.
Arrangements are by the Trammell Chapel of Hardwick & Sons Funeral Home.
Herman McCormick
Herman Eugene McCormick died Sunday, March 21, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 62.
He was a native of Nashville, but had been a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area and a member of the Second Baptist Church.
Mr. McCormick was a former driver with Cellery-Vale Trucking Co. and shipping coordinator with Glen-Tex and Foxfire. He worked for Jorges Carpet Co., was a parts clerk with the Chattanooga Public Works Department and was a volunteer with the literacy program at Patten Towers.
He was a son of the late Sally L. and Robert O'Dell McCormick and the brother of the late William 'Billy' and Ervin McCormick, Mildred Kennedy and Mary McCormick.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Lawson McCormick; four sons, Chris, Michael C. and David A. McCormick, all of Chattanooga, and Joshua E. McCormick, Rossville, Ga.; two daughters, Yvette Ragan, Chattanooga, and Becki McCormick, Rossville; two brothers, Jesse McCormick, Chattanooga, and Thomas M. McCormick, Nashville; eight grandchildren.
Services were Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, Battlefield Parkway, with pastors Allen Crider and Richard Brock officiating.
Burial was in Chattanooga National cemetery.
Edna Meyer
Edna Findley Meyer, who with her late husband, Arthur Meyer, edited and published the Bledsonian Banner in Pikeville, Tenn., for 15 years, died Monday, March 22, 1999, at her Red Bank home. She was 90.
Born near Kowa, Kan., she graduated from Kansas State University and taught elementary school and piano for many years.
She was a member of Red Bank United Methodist Church, the Mu Phi Epsilon honorary music sorority and the Chattanooga Quilters Guild.
Survivors include four daughters, Beth Perry, Creston, La., Lavina Smith, Lenoir, N.C., Edith Cary, Chattanooga, and Miriam Franz, Kent, Wash., and nine grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Red Bank United Methodist Church.
Burial will be in Spring City Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Joe Payne
Joe Parker Payne of Hixson died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 64.

Otis Pollard
Otis G. Pollard died Monday, March 22, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 65.
Mr. Pollard was an Army veteran and was retired from U.S. Pipe and Foundry.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Pollard; two daughters, Margaret Phipps and Lynn Williams, both of Chattanooga; two sons, Otis Pollard Jr., Chattanooga, and Paul McClutcheon, Chattanooga; three brothers, Ira H. and Herman Pollard, both of Summerville, Ga., and Roy Pollard, Columbus, Ohio; sister, Gladys Chouch, Columbus, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Avondale Chapel of Franklin-Strickland Funeral Home with J.W. Strickland officiating.
Burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in Chattanooga National cemetery.
William Rogers
William Paul Rogers died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in a local health care facility. He was 79.

Lorraine Schultz
Lorraine G. Schultz of Hixson died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 78.
She was a native of Giles County, Tenn., a member of First Presbyterian Church, a volunteer at Memorial North Park Hospital and a member of the Lioness Club.
Survivors include her husband, Walter D. Schultz; two sons, Lee Schultz, Smyrna, Ga., and Steven Scholtz, Carrollton, Texas; four sisters, Imogene Casteel and Mary Ellen Thompson, both of Columbia, Tenn., Ruth Sprouse, Pulaski, Tenn., and Joyce Brooks, Elkmont, Ala.; two brothers, Leroy Goats, Nolensville, Tenn., and Lloyd Goats, Goodlettsville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Bennett Mays Funeral Home in Pulaski, Tenn.
Burial will be in Maplewood cemetery.

Albert L. 'Doc' Shirley died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in a local hospital. He was 82.
The native of Whitwell had lived most of his life in the Chattanooga area. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had owned and operated Shirley's Barber Shop.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marvine Shirley.
Survivors include a son, Brent Shirley, Chattanooga; daughter, Nancy Hall, Chattanooga; a sister, Treva Stephens, Atlanta; two brothers, Orval Shirley, Chattanooga, and William Shirley, Lanett, Ala.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home. North.
Burial will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

Fannie Sipsey
Fannie H. Sipsey of Hixson died Wednesday, March 24, 1999, in a local hospital. She was 92.
The longtime Chattanooga area resident was a member of Hixson Church of God and the widow of Jim H. Sipsey.
Survivors include a brother, Ralph T. Harris, Hixson; sister, Ollie H. Davis, Lupton City; two nieces and three nephews.
A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kenneth Bolton officiating.
Visitation will be today from noon until the service at Chattanooga Funeral Home, North.

Pearl W. Tolbert died Thursday, March 25, in a local hospital. She was 99.

Mabel Williams
Mabel Riley Williams of Soddy-Daisy died Thursday, March 25, 1999, in a local health care facility. She was 84.
She attended the Church of Christ and was the widow of Hale Williams.
Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth R. Gross, Trussville, Ala.; brother, William E. Riley, Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Sunset cemetery in Madisonville, Tenn., with the Rev. James F. Cross officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Biereley-Hale Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Hobert Childs
DECATUR, Tenn. - Hobert Charles Childs died Wednesday, March 24, 2999, in an area health care facility. He was 67.
Mr. Childs was a Baptist and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Amanda Riggs Childs.
Survivors include his wife, Leta Childs; a son, Alvin Childs, Decatur; stepson, Marion Shelton, Walton, N.Y.; daughter, Carla Childs, Green Cove Springs, Fla.; stepdaughters, Shy Newman, Teresa Bright and Pam Bache, all of Athens, Tenn., and Brenda Shelton Green, Decatur; two brothers, Jesse Childs, Decatur, and Harvey Childs, Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Gracie Housley, Athens; four grandchildren; 13 stepgrandchildren and six stepgreat-grandchildren.
Services were Thursday at Bowers Funeral Home.
Burial was in Decatur cemetery.

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Virgil N. Dixon died Tuesday, March 23, 1999, in an area hospital. He was 77.
